After 2 years and 2 faithful months, my xbox 360 finally hits a read light. No, not 3 red rings, but 1! 1 red ring of death and an error code that no one can explain with any definitive solution.. e 74.

Ok I'm alright now. I wanted to get a new box anyway, but I was hoping to put it off another month or two hoping to get a third generation machine.

The Red Ring horror stories have really turned me off from looking at purchasing an XBox. :(
Dude! I know. My 360 is in Texas right now being repaired. Microsoft is a 10 minute drive down the street, but oh no, I need to ship my joy box to the Lone Star State. Awesome. And it's the month N+, Rez, and Culdcept come out. So, going on day 26 without my machine, I have to say that I am SOME PISSED. So yeah, I commiserate. There, there brother, it'll be okay.
Now, that being said, were my Wii, DS, PS3, or PSP to go up, I wouldn't be this upset (though I would miss Pixel Junk Monsters and the Final Fantasy Tactics remake for a few weeks). I think that speaks to how far the 360 has come since its rough launch year. And, supposedly, a lot of the new gen systems don't have as much trouble with the red ring overheats. So, even though it's causing me pain right now, I still totally recommend it.

There's a warranty for 3 rings, not 1.
S'ok, I have a plan. I'm gonna go buy an arcade unit, put my harddrive on it, and then try to cause a 3 ring melt down on my original. Send it back to microsoft.. wait 6-10 weeks for the refurb.. then sell the refurbished unit on ebay.

No don't let the horror stories turn you off, only the first generation of 360s (including Elites) suffer serious problems. The second generation of 360s (the one with HDMI connections on all versions) doesn't have these problems and the next generation coming out by the summer should be even more reliable.
The original Xbox had failures. The PS2 had tremendous failures.
It's just kinda clear that to reduce cost and get it out a year before everyone, Microsoft cut some corners and costs.
