MW Beeler, you're also welcome, although if you have stuff to handle,...

I'll have trouble running a game during working hours, so I'm more inclined to evenings and/or weekends.
1st level characters, 32 point buy, max starting gold. ask me first about the odd stuff.
I have Book of Nine Swords, don't have Tome of Magic; have many of the splat books--don't have the second magic splatbook or complete champion; have complete scoundrel.
I have no problem with rolling on the honor system. If I see 5 crit's in a row from one character though, know that I had College Statistics!!!!! 20 years ago.

The game's going to start in the World of Greyhawk, in Keoland, near a town called Saltmarsh. You've all responded to an inquiry by the forces at Fort Bale, near the Hool Marshes, to hire on as mercenaries.

I'm not the world's foremost Greyhawk Scholar by any means, but I've been doing some homework, and got a lot of ideas and/or direction for more research from Sam Weiss.

I'm heading towards U1-Sinister Secrets of Saltmarsh; if you've played it before it's hunky dorey because I'm tricking it out a little bit. I think Kruelaid said he played it long ago.

I love you, brother. Know that I am down with this and look forward to Gaming with you, yet again.
What is available from Unearthed Arcana? I haven't gone with a full-fledged caster for a while so I may grab a variant sorc or Wizo.
EDIT: Never played in Saltmarsh.

w00T!

Talking about stats and rolling, a guy in my RotRL campaign at school rolled and confirmed 4 crits in a row. He basically wiped out a whole squad of goblins in Sandpoint by himself.

I can write all my memories of U1 on a post-it note, so nobody look at me for advice.

Check it out, run it by me; I'm usually down for whatever; I'm just not the world's most crack dungeonmaster anymore so I have to study up on stuff. I have that book.

What I lack in experience, though, I make up for in sheer berserk lunacy.

(edit)oh, and as an aside, I'm going to use the Saltmarsh out of the DMG II, only with a lot of the DM secret stuff retooled, so don't feel bad if you know that the lady who works at the Perfumery is really a Thrall of Nyarlathotep's Avatar Parish Ilton.

Heathy, I have wrestled with my inner demons. I said "No more to being a PbP player!"

And yet, and yet...

My mind is filled with conflicting desires. So then I thought "It's Heathy. What the hell! Let's do it!"

So count me in. Anyone got any character concepts yet? I've a hankering to lay down the smack - a dual-wielding halfling barbarian seems to fit the bill for me.

I AM THE LORD OF ALL HELLFIRE!!!!!

Rock on! I hope I do half as good a job as you.

You'd better - I'll be whining in the background if you don't.

Maybe you specified above - starting level 1? By the way, I totally missed the glory days of Greyhawk and all I know about Saltmarsh is what I briefly read through once in the DMG2 when I first got it.

It's a possibility. I have a few ideas along those lines. I've got dungeon and wilderness lined up. I'm trying to insure that interesting things could be going on in town though.

Yeah, I'll start her out at level one.

I really want to use the Thug fighter variant. It's a seriously urban character class, though. I guess it would be a laugh when he gets out in the wilderness.

Couldn't help sticking my nose into this thread, since I have fond memories of U1, running it in 3 editions of D&D.

Don't know if you're aware, Heathy, but

Spoiler:
the version of Saltmarsh in DMG2 is set 25 years after the events in U1, U2 and U3, and assumes the old PC's were wildly successful. See area 22 for details...if you're planning to run the series, then the 'big reveal' of U2 is going to fall a bit flat, to say the least!

And you may wish to change the identity of a certain NPC in

Spoiler:
area 48. The write-up links him to the old modules, and says he was 'nearly killed'...I don't know about other people's groups, but all mine (and every other DM in my town who've run this multiple times) know there's no 'nearly' about it. The guy's a total sh1t, who always got obliterated, often in very creative, and painful, and permanent ways.

What are your feelings on us using Expanded Psionics Handbook?

OK - how about this for a background.

Gittik was a proud warrior of the Kneecapper tribe, happiest when sneaking up with his fellow goblin warriors to slit the throats of sleeping merchants when their caravans made the ill-advised move of setting camp in the tangled, dank forest where the tribe made their home. He was the son of the chief, and so a "big goblin", and was respected and feared both for his daring exploits and his savage rages when crossed. No one dared stand against him.

One day, in the caverns where he lived, his father, Chief Bagrom the Underhanded, took him to one side. "Son," he said, "There are some things I need to tell you. They may come as a shock. Are you ready?"

Putting a paternal arm around Gittik's shoulder (Gittik started momentarily, wondering if his father was about to use a concealed weapon, but Bagrom continued to chat in a friendly fashion, strolling deeper into the caves to a quiet spot where they could talk).

"Gittik, you know you are my favorite child. But now is the time for you to know. You are not in fact the fruit of my manly loins. In fact, you are not even a goblin. That pinkness to your skin - it's not actually a horrid disease like you think, but the natural way you are. Son, you are a halfling."

This was a shattering revelation to Gittik, but there was more. His father continued, "Let me tell you how you came to the tribe. A caravan passed along the Old Road, and stopped in the woods. I was a young goblin then, having just become chief after my father, Jorm the Careless, had had his accident. So, what were we to do? What we always do, of course - we attacked!

"The wagons were small - goblin sized, but instead filled with stinking, soft-skinned halflings (no offence). Our mighty warriors swept down from the forest and we put them to the spear, the sword and the sock filled with sand. They could not prevail against us, and were overwhelmed. Soon all were dead, their heads severed to adorn my throne. (By the way - you mum and dad are the two on the far left. Thought you would like to know.)

"But then I found a tiny squirming bundle in one of the wagons - a baby halfling. 'Great!' I said, 'Spitroast!' But our great shaman at that time, Jeshmar, who had accompanied us to bless the fight, suddenly cried out.

"'I have a vision, a prophecy!' The sage danced clumsily, arms raised, eyes rolled back so we could only see the whites. 'The tiny one will go on to great exploits. His destiny is vast, his deeds will shake nations. He was meant to be found here, by our tribe. The Kneecappers are to be the crucible in which shall be forged a warrior that none has seen before, a shining hero. He must not be harmed, lest Maglubyet smite us all!' He then settled back and took another deep drag on his meditation pipe, before declaiming, 'Hee, hee, butterflies!'

"Well, as I'm sure you appreciate, we were all disappointed not to get our spitroast. Against my then-better instincts, I took you as my own, determined to make a warrior of you or kill you in the process. But the great witchdoctor spoke true. You have been a huge asset to the tribe - you are the most vicious and cunning of my sons, have slain many foes, and made me truly proud."

Bagrom handed Gittik a small amulet. "This was around you neck when we found you. Look closely."

Gittik gazed deeply at the thing - a golden locket containing a lock of fine blond hair and some (to him) unintelligible script on the outside. As he peered, momentarily distracted, he received a sudden shove from his father and spilled over the edge of a sinkhole, crashing down to a tunnel in a lower level of the warren.

"Ah, sorry about that Gittik. You see, you are a mighty warrior. Far too mighty. Soon you would be challenging me and I can't have that, prophecy or no prophecy. Since no one goblin can challenge your might, I lined up your five brothers to do it instead. Get him, boys!"

As Bagrom voice faded from above, Gittik's siblings emerged from the dark. But Gittik stood proud in a small pool of light that shone down from a crack in the rock. He smote left and right, right and left, until his arms were drenched in the blood of his enemies. In the end, his cowardly brothers either fell to his blades or fled into the dark. Wounded and alone, Gittik navigated the tunnels he had learned over many years to traverse by touch, eventually coming out far from the main entrance to his former lair. Emerging blinking into the sunlight, he ran and ran, putting distance between himself and his erstwhile family.

A halfling...... The implications were almost too vast to grasp - he had never known anything but the forest and killing. At first he hid but discovered that, unlike he was taught, the people outside the forest did not try to kill him on sight. Able to mix on the fringes of civilised society, making a living by thievery and occasional banditry, he was able to pick up a smattering of their Common tongue.

And he discovered there was an alternative to violence and hatred. Some of the people actually seemed to like one another. It was not just a case of beating down the weak and toadying to the strong. Sometimes people did nice stuff, just because they felt like it. A revelation indeed.....

But needs must, and he was barely getting by. He heard about a place called Saltmarsh, where they needed fighters. His only skill, and he needed a new tribe. Perhaps the Saltmarsh tribe would be the place for him. Clutching his mysterious amulet, he set off towards the coast.

Heh, and nice work there Aubrey.

So … don’t know that much about Keoland, and precious little about Saltmarsh. Never played the original module.

I was thinking a pretty standard fighter type for this one, but it looks like Aubrey and Kruelaid have that base covered between them. Maybe I’ll go rogue.

Hello there,

It looks like you have a long list of potential candidates at this point, so I'd like to sign as an alternate/standby if you're keeping a list.

I remember the Saltmarsh series of old (in the module) - but I'll admit it's been a long while so my actual knowledge is fuzzy - still it was an interesting game and I enjoyed it. It was a little strange to see they had updated it for the DMG II - its always stuck with me as the classic backwater town.

Anyhow, just wanted to inquire and throw my hat in the ring. Let me know if there's room when its convenient.

I don't want to give anything away to people who fail their spoiler wil saves, but I'm intrigued with the idea of metagame foreknowledge and using it to cause befuddlement. Alright I am divided on what I should do for this game. I have 3 ideas that I like and want to toss out both to see what would be more welcome for the party.
1. Battle Sorcerer, taking the Human Paragon levels ASAP. Easy to run, fun style, a bit hardier than a typical caster with more limited spell selection. Light armor is nice also.
2. Rogue/Evoker heading for Daggerspell mage PRC. If we don't have a rogue in the party this would be a good alternative. Sneak attack with channeled touch spells through Barbed daggers sounds tasty also...eventually.
3. Straight Evoker, with human paragon levels. Using the Evoker variant, Energy affinity, in unearthed arcana. Good power, hellagood artillary, somewhat more flexible in the casting area than the others. No armor, low hit points(somewhat boosted by the Paragon levels though).

So I guess my main questions are; How many of us are there? And who wants what roles?
I don't like having too much overlap. I would hate being the rogue/Evoker if someone is gonna fill the rogue role. If we have someone doing a straight caster I wouldn't want to be a straight evoker.
What roles are taken?

I AM THE LORD OF ALL HELLFIRE!!!!!

Oh, and here is some more in-depth information about Keoland geographically and politically. I downloaded and printed it out. The map is small; Saltmarsh isn't on it, but there's a nice breakdown of the provinces.

I AM THE LORD OF ALL HELLFIRE!!!!!

Straight wizard should be cool.
In the southern province of Keoland where Saltmarsh is located, wizards are looked at with some suspicion. No Malleus Malifecarum per se, but the people are superstitious.
The tiled rooftops of Saltmarsh are perches for pictlis, little stone humanoid gargoyles that ward away the more pesky feyfolk.
A plate of kippers, a bowl of warm milk, and a button or other innocuous gewgaw left on the porch are known to give them succour.
It's bad luck to touch a wizard's shadow.
