Oh; and........
the rapier Beldan was carrying,........it's a "tengu sword." I've decided that is conveniently named, since a tengu can use any sword, it can become any type of sword, to include falchions and scimitars;......
it needs a new wielder, and will adapt to the new wielder's proclivities in sword usage.

Hit Points: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7
New Magus Arcana: Pool Strike (6d6 points of energy damage dealt as a touch attack, can be used as part of a spellstrike)
Need to select new feat
Updated BAB and Reflex save
Need to select new spells
Discovered that my spells/day was totally wrong - not only was I apparently looking at the wrong level, I forgot to include my bonus/day spells from my Intelligence. d'oh! I wondered how someone could use the abilities of this class with so few spells per day...

Oh, dear, now the debate of what feat to select begins.
Seems silly to take Critical Focus (+4 to confirm criticals) when a class ability gives me a +7 already, but dealing bleed damage does not sound like a bad option to have in one's bag of tricks.
Penetrating strike - ignore first 5 points of DR other than DR/- - sounds intriguing
She qualifies for Greater Weapon Specialization now (+2 to damage), but Arcane Strike would give her +4 to damage at this level and might open up other options. (Like I need more options)
Cleave and Great Cleave would not be bad choices.
Monkey Lunge would make the Lunge feat a little more palatable, but I don't think I want to spend the feat on it. (It negates the AC penalty, but I can just use Combat Expertise and make up for the penalty...)
Work to do. Thrilled to see I get a third iterative attack now - never a bad thing.
OK, dropping Critical Focus and Monkey Lunge from consideration. Greater Weapon Specialization, Arcane Strike, and Cleave are probably less important for her at this point, but I'm seriously thinking about Empower Spell to give her spells more punch. Of course, I need to get better about my daily selection and actually using them...

New Feat: Empower Spell
New Spells: Corrosive Consumption, Fire Snake
My spells/day were not as far off as I thought - the kensai archetype gets one less spell per level per day. But my bonus spells from her Intelligence are going to help a great deal.
I believe she is leveled up now.

Emrael/Pixie:
On the dancing Katana idea,
I love it! I myself have created one Magus I'm running in Patrick's game, He's only 5th level, so not a powerful as Emreal, but I built him with the thought of having as many weapons dancing around him as possible, so he would look like he had a floating armory when attacking.
Here's what he has so far,
-The first lvl Magus spell 'Dancing Dagger' (or similar) which floats next to you and intercepts attacks, basically allows you to cast spells in combat without having to make concentration checks.
-He has the magus ability to empower his sword with the dancing ability, at 5th lvl,
-He also has teh 3rd Party Magus ability 'Dancing Blade' which allows him to have a dancing blade, AND use his power pool abilities at the same time.
(Note that the pool abilities are only usable with one weapon at a time. If you use them on a second weapon, the first one you empowered stops working.)
Theoretically, my 5th lvl magus could have a parrying dagger, and two dancing weapons, as well as wielding an un-empowered weapon normally. :)
I gave him the Quick Draw feat, so theoretically he is never unarmed (only requires a free action to draw)
Um, I haven't actually gotten into a fight big enough to try this yet, but it looks cool in my mind! :)
So yeah, go for it! :)

I was refreshing my memory on the characteristics of the dancing property.
It says it attacks using the user's base attack bonus - no indication of whether is uses the user's ability score - and doesn't indicate whether it gets iterative attacks.
And it requires a +4 enhancement... that might be too rich for my blood as I only get a +4 to distribute at the moment. More research necessary.

Very cool spell, it's the advanced version of the Warding Weapon spell (I called it defensive dagger I think) I like it! The focus is a bit pricey though. ;(
Regarding Dancing weapon property, I think I recall reading (probably under the Magus page or in a thread regarding it) that the dancing weapon Property uses your base attack bonus, however, the 3rd party Dancing Weapon Magus Ability allows the magus to use his base attack bonus, + his Int to hit. AND it leaves the base 'weapon enhancement' use of your power pool completely open to use for other things.
Regarding the +4 enhancement, one of us is misunderstanding it, (And it could be me!) :)
I don't think a magus of any level has any limit on how much enhancement he can put on a weapon, except for the +10 total that is the upper limit of ANY weapon. (At least I do not remember reading a +enhancement limit, Now I have to go back and check!)
(Example: if you are wielding a +5 katana, and want to enhance it another +5 (if you were able to) you could do so. However, You could NOT enhance it with another +5, and a Dancing Weapon property, as that would be a +14 enhancement bonus total.)
EDIT- Found it! You are confusing the Enhancement bonus that you get when you spend a pool point with the Property Enhancement cost.
At 5th level, these bonuses can be used to add any of the following weapon properties: dancing, flaming, flaming burst, frost, icy burst, keen, shock, shocking burst, speed, or vorpal. Adding these properties consumes an amount of bonus equal to the property's base price modifier (see the Magic Weapon Special Ability Descriptions). These properties are added to any the weapon already has, but duplicates do not stack. If the weapon is not magical, at least a +1 enhancement bonus must be added before any other properties can be added. These bonuses and properties are decided when the arcane pool point is spent and cannot be changed until the next time the magus uses this ability. These bonuses do not function if the weapon is wielded by anyone other than the magus.
(Bold and Italics mine) And after highlighting them, I see why you are thinking you only have a +4 to spend at 15 lvl. Hmmm,...
Although the threads are certainly making it seem as if we are choosing to hold them back, your interpretation actually makes sense.
I (and the threads I have read) were interpreting it as a magus could only grant a +5 enhancement bonus max, but that we could add as many Properties as we wanted up till the +10 max.
Your (probably correct ) interpretation is that you can only grant a +5 TOTAL, and we choose how much of what when the point is spent. Hm.

Either way, get the Magus Arcana Dancing Weapon (3rd party, separate arcana) and it solves your conundrum. You can use it, and since it is not a base pool power, you can use it with your pool power to further enhance your weapon, or use it on a separate weapon, and use your pool power to use the one you still hold. :)

Additional emphasis mine. At Emrael's current level, she can enhance her weapon up to +4 using an Arcane Pool point. Since the dancing property is a +4 property, it would require +4 of her available enhancements, using everything she's got. I may still be misunderstanding, of course...
But you are correct - the third party arcana would solve the problem for me. What source did you get that from?

Yeah, I'm pretty sporadic right now too. Working and gyming and writing seems to burn a lot of my time, and then I have a seemingly brief conversation with my wife and suddenly all the times, they are gone, and I am asleep and then it's time for work again. Hey ho so it goes. It's a good job the pbps can work this way, cause it's too much fun to stop.

Hey all,
Sorry slow posting, RL strikes again. And again,...
I will probably not be able to post until after after Thanksgiving, (it's at my house. again.)
SO, Happy Thanksgiving!
I'll see you all after the turkey-induced coma! :)
I'll TRY to update Elgan this weekend, I swear!
(Hm, Powerful Shape feat?!?) :)

Moving AGAIN?!? I'm sorry.
I hope it's all for good reasons at least?
(I have moved so much that I am over any misconceptions that it is anything but a PAIN. Although the last move was into our very first purchased home instead of a rental, so that was pretty cool.)
Enjoy the holiday trip! see you around,...

1 person marked this as a favorite. |
Best of luck with the move Vatt. Being a bibliophile, I have an innate horror of moving (books are freakin' heavy!!)
A-MEN brother! :)
I realized that when I bought this house (my first ever home purchase) about 5 years ago now, that was teh first time all of my personal library had ever been entirely unpacked in over,... almost 20 years now?!? (15 years at that point in time)
Wow, just re-did the math again,... Just,... wow. ;P

I don't own any ebooks, or anything that read them except a computer. (Unless my Iphone will read them?)
I guess I really like the IDEA of ebooks, having the ability to carry around 100 novels in a device like a kindle. But I REALLY like the idea of having an actual BOOK even more.
I guess what really gets me is this, buying something 'digitally only' feels too much like paying money for nothing. If my computer crashes, there goes my book. If I drop my book, I can pick it up and it still works. ;P
SOrt of the same reason I refuse to buy items in a computer game for real money instead of in-game gold. I bought the game, in some cases I have to pay a monthly fee to PLAY the game, WHY would I spend real money for an imaginary item that only exists in my game?!?
Wow, sorry, almost jumped tracks there,... back to your regularly scheduled topic,...
Ebooks are cool for traveling I suppose, but I'm pretty sure it would take a major disaster (fire &/or flood) destroying my collection to make me part with my precious physical books! :)
Will Cooper RPG Superstar 2012 Top 16 |
Yeah, nothing beats the feel of a proper physical book. But living in NZ it can take a long time for new books to hit the bookstores, and when they do they can cost between $30 to $60. Insane. So a 10 second download from amazon for $10 on the day of release makes me very happy.
I'm trying to buy 'mind candy' books, frex Cold Days, on kindle, and save physical books for big art books that really benefit from size and high production quality.

My wife has a Kindle; she likes it a lot. My brother has a Sony e-book thingmabob; he thinks it is awesome. I, on the other hand, love my paper books...
Having said that, I probably will switch to some kinda e-book reader for "fun" reads while keeping the dead-tree format for my academic titles - meaning that I'll keep buying paper books by the fistful.
