Rise of the Runelords

Tonight was a bit slow, with the characters being inside of the Nettlewood, playing it cautious. They took down the druid and his animal companion, and then spent a good deal of time interrogating him and getting as much intel as they could on Thistletop. Time was running out for the game session, so they went forward to the rope bridge.

Concerned about guards in the towers, they used an Obscuring Mist and sent the entire group across the bridge at once. Yep. As the trap goes off, the situation worked out perfectly: the warrior at the front making her save, the wizard in the back making hers, so both leapt to their respective edges. The druid and cleric in the middle weren't as fortunate (action points helped save their bacon somewhat). That's how the session ended.

So as it stands for next session the druid and cleric are hanging from the dropped rope bridge, with the wizard and Shalesu up at the top. The fighter is 'safe' on the other side, but the guards are starting to rouse from the noise. I'm envisioning a lot of long range archery and spellslinging as they try to resolve the situation.

This is why I play the game.

That is awesome. Such a great way to end a session. I just love it when adventure pacing and dumb luck team up to deliver a one-two punch like that.

My party tried almost the exact same tactic. They searched the bridge and discovered that it wouldn't handle the weight, so they decided the cleric would hike across the bridge with a rope and secure the other side (despite me hinting that they could secure the bridge on this end instead). They knew the goblins were on full alert after failing to stop several of them from fleeing some battles. When he got near the end of the bridge he was ambushed by goblin commandos and scouts in the tower. The druid cast obscuring mist, then later shapeshifted and ran across the bridge, but then lost his balance and nearly fell. Finally, our other cleric started running across the bridge to help. I was allowing them to to get away with it until the druid shifted out of his canine form (small) and back to human form (medium) and sent them all tumbling. Except for the first cleric, who was tied off with a rope, and smacked like a pendulum against the cliff face. The second cleric in heavy armor sank like a rock, the druid was barely keeping his head above water, and the first cleric was at -9 hit points. Miraculously he stabilized while our 4th player rappelled down the cliff to feed him a healing potion then cut the rope to free him.
We ended the night at the base of the cliff with the tide coming in and a small army of goblins up on the cliffs hooting and laughing at them. =)

Heh, we finished last time with my party standing on the edge about to go out over the bridge. The party's wizard only has offensive spells and the only tactic the party has come up with is the good old rushing offense.

The only problem is they have a knack for failing saving throws at semi crucial moments...

The entire party dropping to their deaths is a very real posibility..

Don't forget the Bunyip *smiles evilly*

My party ended up in the exact same predicament session before last. So we started this last session with them trying to get up the cliff with a Bunyip nipping at their heels while the goblins hooted and hollered. The cleric says she may take a level of ranger so she can get "large, blubbery, seal-things" as a favored enemy.
