Help!!! My players want to join the Lotus Dragons too quickly.

Savage Tide Adventure Path

One of the players in my group is playing an assassin who has contacts in a local thieves guild. However the lotus dragons have destroyed all the other thieves guilds. So there guild has been destroyed however I was able to determine (through discreet questioning) that there appropriate reaction would be too join the lotus dragons. Seeing as how they are the assassins friends and how the assassin is evil it seems that the party will join the lotus dragons before the adventure is ready (eg. no lotus hq or the treasure and exp gained from it). What can I do?

Let him join. When the PC's kill off the rest of the LD's, he becomes the boss. Maybe he is spying on Lavinia. At some point he will have to make a choice which side to be on, but it works either way.

Assassin at 1st level ? I suppose we are not talking the PrC here =)

Anyway, with you being the GM you could either decide that more guilds than the Lotus Dragons survived ( I did, the Dragons are simply too smalls scale to "run" a town like sasserine ), or that alternatively he is from abroad, but not a Sasserine native.
You are the GM - its not up to him to dictate how the world is set up, but your privilege.

Alternatively, let him carry a grudge against the LDs for destroying his guild/gang/setup - after all, who wouldn't be pi§$§%ed off if your friends and mates get knocked off by a rival gang.

He is an assassin by profession, not by class.

In my group, I set up backstories with/for my players and for the party rogue-type I had his guild get whacked by the LD while he was on a job elsewhere in the city. He met with one other survivor of the now defunct guild who told him to go to ground because they LD were looking to eliminate all remaining from that guild. Later, that PC discovered that this other survivor was taken out, so he went to ground until he could figure a way out. He ended up stealing Lavinia's invite to another (NPC) adventurer.

All that is a lengthy way to say that you could make the PC a target of the LD before he meets the rest of the group. Not sure that will work for you tho, sounds like you already have the Party set up.

Cheers!

Meh. You let your players play evil characters you takes your chances.

But in the effort of being helpful, maybe you could rename the Lotus Dragons and make them a new, foreign-borne upstart thieves guild trying to move in. Your assassin PC then becomes someone trying to protect his guild from these invaders.

This might even give you a chance to slip in some more of Vanthus' backstory if you make Kellani a contact of his from wherever it was he went to live with his uncle.

there actually is an "Assassin" core class (levels 1 through 20) in FFG's "Cityworks"... that's why I was wondering

Liberty's Edge

My players were invited to visit Rowyn Kellani in her absurdly luxurious imprisonment in Castle Teraknian during our last session (mid-Bullywug Gambit). She claimed to be a patriot whose ultimate goal was protecting Sasserine from takeover by the Scarlet Brotherhood. According to her, the LD had prevented assassinations of two Dawn Council members by SB agents. She admitted killing Harbormaster Islaran, but said that it was because he was corrupt & she needed to make an example of him.

If you decided to go this route, you could have your PCs join the LD in some other hideout (sketched in broad strokes 'cause you won't be fighting there) and use the LD section mostly as written to represent a cell of Scarlet Brotherhood operatives that Rowyn wants wiped out. Give the SB another beautiful female leader for Vanthus to get in a love triangle with. He and Brissa would be traitors who sell out to the SB in exchange for support in their scheme to rob Kraken's Cove, which frankly makes more sense for the Brotherhood. They're lawful soldiers whose sea empire is threatened by piracy: Rowyn is a little thief whose livelihood is dependent on the big thieves in the Crimson Fleet to bring in the exotic animals & other Isle of Dread goods she smuggles. For her to bite that hand isn't well justified IMHO.

Wow! Coincedentally, I had also been thinking along much the same lines -- Rowyn claiming that she was doing what she did to combat the increasing influence of the Scarlet Brotherhood. For my campaign, that might be true to an extent, and it's one of the reasons she'll offer to the PCs when she tries to recruit them... but at the same time Rowyn did what she did to help her family seize power within Sasserine. Her motives were definitely not entirely benevolent. *wicked grin*

If Islaran isn't dead yet, the LD's could let the PCs join and give them the symbol of the LD. Then they'll get their first mission: assassinate Islaran. Make sure the PCs have bandages on their tattoo (to protect it while it is healing). Then have Heldrath Kellani "tip off" the city watch. That tip will be too late to save poor, old Islaran, but will be in time to catch the PCs in the act.

Of course the PCs claim to be LDs, but hard to believe with the proof of their brand new Scarlet Brotherhood tattoos. The LDs become the primier thieves' guild in Sasserine, Heldrath Kellani is rewarded for her attempt to save old man Islaran by being named the new Harbormistress by the Dawn Council, and the PCs get a long trip to the end of a rope.

That's what bites about being evil.
Good is out to get you.
And, often times, so is other evil.

It'll be up to the PCs to escape. Maybe Lavinia will help out and that evil character will start to mend his/her ways . . .
