Diplomacy (1d20 4=10) Yuk.
Butting right into the conversation, Colvare says, "Exchuse me, I heard you mention Varen, I was hoping to find him here this morning, I have vital need of some notes I belive he posses. Could you point me to where he lives?"
Fatespinner's Rayne |
Try a Diplomacy check to inveigle your way into their conversation.
Diplomacy I've got!
Rayne slapped his knee and joined in with the laughter. "More like than not, they're in this thing together! I think ol' Varen's bagged the wench and sought to elope to Xendrik to live the life of luxury on the money from selling the professor's artifacts!" The changeling continues laughing, only to settle himself slightly. "I mean, where else would he run off to, right?"
Still smiling, still jovial, Rayne listens to the next words intently.
Diplomacy: 5 + 9 + 5 (AP) = 19. Stupid crappy rolls making me blow APs. On the bright side, the assist from Ham puts me over 20! :D

Spoiler for Mirra's group:
OK, Diplomacy didn't work, but at least they are still talking to you rather than giving you the cold shoulder (or calling the Watch). You will have to try a Bluff - remember, the less outrageous it seems, the lower the DC.
Aubrey the Demented/Malformed |
s!#&, forgot to spoiler my last post. Sorry.
No worries, I'll just deduct the xp.
For Rayne's group:
He looks slightly wary - after all, both the elf and the "half-elf" are armed and armoured, and this isn't an obvious hang-out for adventurers. And he frowns slightly at the sight of the twitchy shifter.
OK, you have their attention, you need to capitalise on it. Another Diplomacy check, or Bluff if you prefer (if you need to lie). You should get bonuses for buying drinks and so on.

Bluff (1d20+7=25)
"Oh, sorry, I should have introduced myself, I am Colvare, I have recently come to Sharn from Thaliost, I am supposed to be going on a small dig with Varen, and needed some notes he posseses. We arranged to meet here, but as you can see, here, he is not, and I really do need those notes as soon as I can get them. Would you have any idea at all where to find him?"
Keep the lies small, and they never notice....
Aubrey the Demented/Malformed |
Mirra's group:
Mirra puts on her most trusting smile, "Yes we are also concerned that he might be in danger so any help would be most appreciated."
Ah, that might not have been the best thing to say to gain their trust.
The man frowns suspiciously. "Danger? What sort of danger? Surely that's a matter for the Watch? Who are you, anyway?"
Might call for one final throw of the Bluff dice, or you lose them.
Shagraat |
Mirra crowd
Mmmm. Tough crowd tonight. Shagraat is careful not to look like he's paying attention to Mirra and Colvare.
He scans the place for any other members of his race (or at least something close). Maybe an alert member of the help? Something other than these academics who he's more likely to scare than impress.
Colvare |
Aubrey, Mirra group....
Colvare gives Mirra a quick, venemous look. Turning back to the students he says "Please, ignore my friend, she is a little slow and sometimes gets the wrong end of the stick. I think on this occasion she means that we may be in danger of not being allowed on this dig if we do not find Varen soon."
Urthona |
Rayne's group:
Urthona buys a round of drinks for himself, Rayne, Hamathin and this guy who looks interested and one spare drink. He takes the mugs and brings them to the table. "Here, sir." adressing Rayne, "A bit of ale for the bet you won earlier. Who wants one gets one but this one's for me." Urthona's settling into a chair with one of the mugs of ale.
How much is that round of ale?

Mirra's group:
Secondly, in order to do it without anyone noticing will require a Bluff check - I'll say 20 + the level of the spell in question (if it has verbal or somatic components) if you decide to go ahead. (Apologies if I'm missing something from the beguiler clas description that says you can do this stuff without anyone noticing.) If you get noticed, witnesses will take it amiss - calling-the-Watch amiss. I leave it up to you.
Also, you didn't specify who you were casting the spell on - the guy or the woman?
Aubrey the Demented/Malformed |
Mirra's group:
Yep, close - one point less and you would be running from the Watch right now. :-)

Fatespinner's Rayne |
My group:
The changeling scratched his chin thoughtfully, letting the gears turn inside his mind.
I'll take Bluff, as I'm pretty much blowing proverbial smoke in their faces. 10 + 9 + 6 (beguiling influence) + 2 (drinks) = 27.

Another boy nods sagely, "Yeah, I heard that he nearly lost his position here, but got himself together. Anyway, he's still pretty good on the Giant Age - knows virtually all the inscriptions by heart."

Mirra's group
"Colvare, just Colvare. Thank you for the information."
Assuming that is the end of the conversation... "Mirra, you are a very naughty girl, nice save though, I thought we had hit a wall. It really is a pitty I cannot learn spells from people like you, that one looks mighty handy. Would you like that drink before we stroll up to the casino?"

Mirra smiles at Colvare, "Lets get it to go before the guys friend starts wondering where the change of heart came from."
When Mirra and Colvare reach the other two, "So are any of you good at gambling?" she asks.

Waiting for Rayne's group to post before we move things on.
Mirra's group:
As the party heads out, the woman can be heard asking the man what got into him.
Fatespinner's Rayne |
My group:
Rayne smiled smugly and winked at Urthona. "Really, though, we all win. You get free drinks, we get in contact with our former employer. We figure, if Varen isn't with Krone, he should at least know where we might find her. He's quite the toady."
When it Raynes, it pours.... bull s%$!, that is. Bluff check: 13 + 9 + 6 (beguiling influence) + 2 (drinks) = 30. Woo-hoo!
Aubrey the Demented/Malformed |
Rayne and co:
"Yeah - I don't know where he hangs about, he really mixes with the grad students, and not much with them. I heard he also freelances on the side, translating stuff dragged out of Xendrik, for a guy called Harmal. Some sort of dealer or something."
It is pretty clear that they don't have much more to offer.
Fatespinner's Rayne |
My group:
Rayne flashed a devious smile and offered a sly wink in the adoring girl's direction. This is almost too easy!
Fatespinner's Rayne |
"Harmal is the name of a man who Varen has done freelance work for in the past. According to the information we received, he is some kind of dealer, presumably the kind that would have need of Varen's skills as a translator for Xendrik artifacts." Rayne smirked. "Unfortunately, we have no lead on where we might find this individual... and Sharn is a mighty big place."

"Ahhh, the casino we have been pointed to sounds like the sort of place he may be found, underground overtones, if you catch my meaning. Maybe the two are linked? It's worth asking for boh either way."
