I've recently gotten pretty interested in the Planescape campaign setting and since I figure I won't be able to get a game together in real life to do it (limited player pool/limited interest/limited time), I'm considering running a pbp Planescape game. It may be a little while before I can really get started, so this is just to try and judge interest to see if it's worthwhile.

I'd like about 3-6 players that can post around once a day, or at least semi-regularly. If you've never played Planescape before, not a problem: I've never DMed or played it before, but it seems like fun. Like "the philosophy major's D&D". I'm a pretty relaxed DM and I like to joke around (in case you've never read any of my posts), so it'll be a relatively relaxed game full of hair-raising planar adventure.

As I've said, it may be a few weeks/months before I'm ready to take on players and get organized. Unlike my campaign journal, which kind of fell off after a few weeks, I'm hoping a pbp game will have enough interaction to stay consistent. Let me know what you think!

I can’t believe the barmy cant coming out of your bone-box, basher! Call me a gully, but I might bang around; though more likely we'll all end up in the dead book, or worse, the Mazes.

I'm a clueless berk when it comes to PbP, but I'm willing to give it a try if there are some trig bloods willing to give a Prime a chance.

Liberty's Edge

I'm down tentatively; if more people want to play than the limit I'll back out as I'm in 3 pbp's allready and I don't want to be a hog.

I figgered most of the bashers on the boards would be a bit peery, but I'm hoping for a right lot of bloods. Clueless primes, seasoned bloods and knights of the post welcome.

I want to be a gnome wizard.

Who thinks he's a leprechaun.

Dark Archive

I'm interested. Got any more slots open?

It's still pretty tentative, so any interest is welcome. I haven't worked out plot, rules or anything yet but if folks are interested I'll start figuring stuff out.

I'm waiting on the Planar Handbook from amazon ($6 used; decent price if all I want is faction PrCs and maybe an update on Sigil).

I like the Exiled/Rogue Modron race from Dragon magazine and I think the Githzerai as presented on planewalker.com is more to my liking than the Monster Manual version. I'm on the fence with the Bariaur on planewalker; I think it's a good representation of the original Planescape versions but I also think they might need a level adjustment. On the other hand, I think a penalty to dexterity and wisdom for males and the large size can offset the strength and constitution bonuses and maybe the fact that armor will be more expensive can offset the natural attack. A male bariaur would be an offensive monster in melee but they would need gobs of hit points to survive with the lower average AC.

You could conceivably play just about anything in a Planescape game, but I want to kind of limit things for when we get started (whenever that will be). I'm thinking about Primes: anything in the PHB, plus the possibility of Drow or another level-adjusted race. Planars: Tieflings, Aasimar, Githzerai, Bariaur, Rogue/Exiled Modron, Humans, Half-elves.

I'm also kind of split on where I want to start. There's Sigil, Balefire from Dragon magazine (which I think is really cool) or maybe an insane wizard's tower in Limbo.

Just thinkin' out loud, cutter. ;)

I'm interestd (never played in Planescape before, no virtually nothing about it) so put my down for a slot.
If there's a lot of interest than I'll step down, since I'm in quite a few PbPs already.

Spanky, you can't play. You're just an avatar of me.

I might be a mongrel man if it's allowed. They are pretty weak assed.

What book are they in? I remember the second edition version, but beyond that I haven't seen them.

Liberty's Edge

Shoot. I think they're Fiend Folio.

But now, I want to be a human fighter, viking type, that was in a big battle, and when the battle got joined, he fell down and played dead.
This valkyrie kinda new to her job, picked him up to take to Valhalla, and he explained that he was a coward and wasn't really dead.
So she dropped him off at Sigil, where the gods can't see into, to cover up her ineptitude.

Hmm. That gives me some ideas. Another thing about me as a DM; I like to mine your characters for plot ideas, so even though the planes are infinite and crap, it's going to be a character driven campaign if we end up doing it.

Dark Archive

Keegan, you ok with a stonechild character? Got the racial class from Races of Stone.

Well, I don't own Races of Stone, so I'm not sure. Would you compromise with an Earth Genasi (as seen in the Forgotten Realms book)?

Dark Archive

I'll try to post the class in a spoiler later so you can have a look at it. The racial class only has 6 levels, i.e., LA +4 and 2 racial hit dice.

That's both hilarious and awesome, plus it provides a built in hook for later.

I'd like to play, too; I'm feeling more confident about my ability to play. I won't be able to build a character for a while, though, since I'm in the wrong country.

You're certainly welcome. I won't be ready for a while, anyways, so no big rush with character stuff. Just hashing out ideas at the moment.

Yeah, I'll tighten it up later. Think I'll break out the boxed set and read up on it some.
I like having valkyries pissed off at me.

Have any feelings about an Elan with a metal plate bolted over his mouth?

So, two HD for the entire progression? I'm not too crazy about it, really. My concern is that for those six levels, you'll have a glass jaw since the race/class seems geared ultimately toward melee. My other concern is that after those six levels and maybe four levels of another fighting class, the power level will go in the opposite direction. I won't say no, but I need to look at it a bit more and I would suggest having an alternate in mind.

I'll take a look at the elan, beeler. But I'm not planning to use psionics, just so you know.

No biggie, I figured I’d make him a paladin anyway. Basic concept has him being the last worshipper of an overthrown lawful good pantheon, who was “rewarded” for his dutiful service by the new deities of his prime. One of the two free power points will go toward him not being able to eat, and I’m assuming he’ll mime a lot.

Well, I like the concept a lot. Your one other power point would go toward either reducing damage or increasing saving throws once a day. I'll consider it. You could also just be a human that doesn't have to eat or drink because of the plate, though I would have you find sustenance elsewhere.

Edit: What if you couldn't eat regular food, but instead lived off of smells and sounds? For example, if you've ever read J. Gregory Keyes' Waterborn/Blackgod and Fool Wolf stories, ghosts take sustenance from wine, insense (probably spelled wrong, but you know what I mean) and songs. So I could imagine your character living off of things like that because of their religious significance as offerings and the belief that they signify; plus, since you're the paladin of a forgotten pantheon and smell is the closest sense to memory, I think it's a nice little literary thing.

Okay, thus far interested parties:
Not in a pbp
-Patrick Curtin

In a pbp
-Heathansson
-mwbeeler
-Radavel
-Arctaris
-Sect?
-Twiceborn (mentioned in the 'Dungeons and Dragons' section Planescape thread)

I've read two of the "Age of Unreason" set, but not the others. Interesting concept, reminds me of the wine lusting skeleton from The Last Unicorn (“Why do you care, you can’t taste it anyway…” “But I..Remember!”).

Just a mental construct for now, I'll think on it some as things develop.

James, you can take me as an official alternate--if you don't mind me spamming your discussion thread with pornography, that is. You know where to find me if someone doesn't post.

Liberty's Edge

Does anybody want to be my human vikings' half orc (somewhat fraternal) twin brother?

Liberty's Edge

Woah, look---no 4e crap on the recent 10.

I was thinking of alternating my progression in the stonechild monster class with levels from either the fighter, monk or warblade base classes.

Anyways, I am already thinking of an alternative character. Perhaps, a githyanki. Thanks Paizo for Dungeon issue 100.

I'm so tempted to start a discussion thread in the PBP discussion called Planescape Discussion--with Spamporn.

Porn By Post?

Is there a plane of pure sex? I've always wanted to make a character based on Barbarella.

*Kruelaid interrupts his typing and daydreams*

... I know you want me in this game, James, come on, say it.

Liberty's Edge

There's gotta be a place like that in the multiverse. Why, we must make it our quest to find such a place.
A strange Berk, deep in his cups told me one of the Oearth's or Aarth's or some such has a Manse of Heffnorg or something.

I don't think there is a whole PLANE of sex, but I know of a certain lodge in Ysgard where anything goes...

You can definitely be an alternate at least, Kruelaid. I'm hoping to keep a relatively tight group and let folks that haven't had a chance to play a porn by post...err...play by post...have a shot, but who knows? I'm hoping for three to six, but I may go as high as nine if there's a lot of interest (rule of three). I have a lot of reading to do, still and I have to think about how I will handle larger groups.

Heathansson wrote:

I'd be interested. It'd give me a chance to play a character I've been considering for a while.

He's a half-orc barbarian or fighter (not sure which one yet) who's dearest wish is to be a wizard. Unfortunately he's not bright enough to be a wizard so he's kind of embittered although basically a nice person. He stills pursues anything that looks like it cold give him arcane powers though.
I also might be interested in playing a tiefling of some kind.

mwbeeler wrote:

Is that even legal?

Even if it isn't, it could spawn a whole new industry.

Young githyanki rarely have "plays well with others" on their report card, but if you can give me a good back story, I'll definitely consider it. My only issue with the gith in general are those higher HD spell-like abilities.

Man, everyone wants to be a fighter or some other crazy stuff hittin' specialist. Weird.

Liberty's Edge

Maybe I'll be like a bard or some s+!~. IDK yet.

James Keegan wrote:

Technically I want to be a fighter who wants to be a wizard.

And I'm cool with playing someone other than Thoruk, should I be in the game.

Liberty's Edge

I'm just good at fightering.

Heathansson wrote:

A Viking bard?

Dark Archive

Perhaps, a githzerai monk instead... or a half-orc variant druid.

A cowardly skald that looks and acts like a tough stuff warrior guy could work.

Liberty's Edge

Oh, yeah. They had em. They were called skalds.
Egil Skallagrimsson was one pretty much. But he was a tough fighter guy too. He was a broken character in real life; probably about 43 point buy.
