I got the BESM d20 book for one of my anime-loving otaku friends' birthday... probably 3 years ago now. He thanked me for the gift by offering to run a game for me in which I could play any concept I wanted.
Not being a huge anime nut, I went for the closest anime-style thing I could think of that I was actually interested in:
I made a clone of Dante from the Devil May Cry series of video games. He was a demon hunter. It was pretty fun, but got old pretty quickly (as he allowed me to make the character absurdly overpowered).

Well, to be fair to your friend, after going through the d20 version with the intent on running it, I found it completely and absurdly unbalanced as a system.
Mutants & Masterminds has a great system based on building characters with points. BESM d20 looks like it just maps on the point-based character creation of regular BESM onto the d20 system, which doesn't work out well. You can't just map on a point-based character creation system, you have to build one up from scratch.

I did play in a Mutants & Masterminds game once and yeah, the system seemed to be much more balanced and functional. I didn't really care for the game much, but I know that it's entirely because of the a*%%~ douchebag GM and not the game system. Maybe I'll give it another try someday... minus the douchebag.

I thought the d20 version was far more 'clunkier' then the Tri-Stat versions, too. Much the same for Silver Age Sentinels. I just wish there was Stingy Gamer Tri-Stat editions.
