Play-by-Post Discussion

1 to 50 of 72 << first < prev | 1 | 2 | next > last >>

Hey everyone! This is the discussion thread for my World of Darkness game. We'll use this thread to put the finishing touches on character generation, discuss backstories, and tie everyone into the plot before I get the game started in earnest. I'm hoping to start late this weekend but, given my current workload, it might be next Monday.

For the time being, please throw a post up in this thread to let me know you're still interested in playing so that I know who's still around. Thanks!

Grand Lodge

Still here. Trying flesh out the background and finish it up. I'm always terribly slow for that as it tends to make a lot more difference in wod.

13th Generation Tremere Vampire

"Da, I am here, and still very interested. For the now being, I will be lurking in the University library, using the free internet access, and the readily available larder..."

11th Generation Vampire, Clan Gangrel

Still here!

I'm here.

I still haven't seen Karelzarath come forward with a character concept yet. He expressed interest at the beginning but has gone silent in the days since. Hmmmm...

So, Mr. ST, can you give us any clues on what we can expect? I remember you were asking for some heavy-hitters (like myself and probably Jonquil), so that denotes the possibility of some straight up combat. But can you give us anything more?

Hah, I'm only playing a detective, and I'm already fishing for info!

I can give you some hints. :)

It's common knowledge amongst the Camarilla that the Sabbat claims the entire nation of Mexico as it's domain and many influential Sabbat vampires operate out of Mexico City directly, directing waves of attacks at many Southwestern American cities. Los Angeles has already fallen to the Sabbat, along with San Diego and most of southern California. The wolves of the Sabbat are howling for blood at San Jose's doorstep and tensions in the city of San Francisco are running high as numerous Camarilla elders invest in the defense of one of their few remaining bastions along the West coast.

The Sabbat suffered heavy losses in the siege of Los Angeles and the Camarilla is taking advantage of this setback by reinforcing their holdings in San Fran. No one knows exactly when the attack will come or how the battle will begin but every undead in the city, from the lowliest neonate to the most potent elder, is sitting on the edge of their seat as they wait for the ball to drop.

Lately, however, something has been weakening the Camarilla of San Francisco. A few ancillae of tactical importance have vanished, some found dead, others disappearing completely. Even one of the elders, a noted member of the Toreador bloodline, has vanished without a trace. Has the Sabbat invasion begun already? Or is there some other monster lurking in the shadows of San Fran?

There's your "sneak preview." :)

O.o

Color me impressed, and excited to begin!

Oh, one more thing:

I would like characters to have been active for 50 years or less. I don't think this is going to affect anyone but Jonquil at this point. As for her, this can easily be resolved. In your background, you said that she spent "about a decade" from 1902 learning under her sire and then described a scene in which he threatened to beat her to death (presumably at some point during this time). Your background picks up at 1962, when she "began to chafe under his rule."

Would you be okay with the following alteration: Her sire carried through on his threat, beating her clear into torpor, possibly more than once, and kept her in the death-like sleep for several decades. In 1962, she finally had enough and took off. Work for you?

3 dots in courage and you get smoke... Damn, you are hard

I don't get it.

EDIT: I just switched to courage 4 self-control 3, if that's okay. Based on the comment above, I wanted him to have a bit more courage, and a little less self-control. He does have anger management issues, after all.

Vamps are rediculously afraid of fire. It is an ingrained condition.

It is a very difficult courage test to be able to get near or start a fire.

If you fail, you run screaming and wetting yourself....

Rotshreck, if I remeber the spelling.

FLip side is I don't know how tightly we are going to be held to it, and if it is in character to smoke, have at.

Ah, right. I get it now.

I figure if Smiling Jack can do it, why not I?

My take would be that a vamp isn't going to be all that worried by a match or a lighter, nor worried about the burning end of the cigarette. Nor, for that matter, would they be worried about cancer. Its just an old habit he uses to occupy his hands.

Any fire bigger than what I just suggested and they'd probably get the ol' fear twinge. Of course, lighting up near a nervous vamp is probably a cool way to say 'that's right, I'm more badass than you', which is the essence of all intimidation...

Lighting a cigarette will not force a Rotschrek roll unless your Courage is 2 or less. If someone else lights your cigarette, however, the fire is out of your control and thus that much more terrifying. It will only be difficulty 4, but you will need to make a roll if you want them to light it for you while it's in your mouth. You can have someone else light it away from your body with no roll. Stabbing a lit lighter in a Kindred's face is a good way to provoke a reaction, but at difficulty 4, they're likely to succeed at the Courage roll and let you know what they think of your posturing.

I really doubt this is going to be an issue, but there you have it: The official ST ruling.

I'm fine with the change, but you're aware that the Brujah clan flaw is that difficulties to resist frenzy increase by 2, right? This means that you have three dice to resist frenzy with and your "basic" target number is going to be eight on a d10. No problem with the decision, but expect to possibly lose control of your character from time to time.

Considering he has anger management issues, its fine by me. Later I'll probably spend point to give him more self-control.

Okay, still waiting to hear from Karelzarath and Cosmo here. Then we shall be ready to roll.

This is going to make me sound like an idiot (more so than usual, anyway) - I don't have my rulebook in front of me and I wanted to ask about two of my disciplines...

With Potence and Fortitude, do you need to spend blood points to activate them? I can't remember (yeah, that's how long its been since I've played). I know that Potence give a number of automatic successes on strength-based rolls (or damage rolls) equal to your dots and that Fort gives you the ability to soak a number of aggravated damage dice equal to your dots, but I can't remember if you need to pay blood points to use them.

I know presence does, but I can't remember about the others - anyone want to help me refresh my memory?

Potence and Fortitude are both passive Disciplines. They are considered always active and require nothing to maintain. Bear in mind, however, that Fortitude is an out-of-clan Discipline for Brujah, so you'll need to decide where you learned it from. Also, if you want to raise it to a higher level in the future, you'll need to learn it from someone who possesses it at a level equal to or greater than the level you are trying to purchase in addition to paying the normal out-of-clan experience costs for it. Fortitude not only allows you a few dice with which to soak aggravated damage, but also adds it's rating to all your other damage soak pools as well. A vampire who is cut with a knife, for example, rolls Stamina + Armor (if any) + Fortitude to resist the damage.

Presence does not require blood to function, either. The very highest level power (Majesty) requires a Willpower point, but that's it.

Wait, I though Potence, Fortitude, and Presence were the clan disciplines for the Brujah. Or was that before revised - I must have got confused and used the wrong book, lol. That would make Celerity the other Brujah discipline, right?

Potence, Celerity, and Presence are the Brujah Disciplines.

Just remember, Brujah are hopped up on "P.C.P."

Poleritude....

the discipline of choice when fighting werewolves...

Shadow Lodge

Potence/Celerity/Fortitude, yeah, scary combo.

Shouldn't it be more like:

"Poleritude: The only way in hell you could ever hope to have a chance at beating a werewolf in combat."

?

Okay, I'm keeping Fort, but dropping Presence. I'm taking one dot in Celerity instead. The idea would be that through his work (keeping Vamps out of jail, that kind of thing) or perhaps by making the charges against someones childe vanish, he was granted the chance to learn to Fortitude Discipline.

How does that sound?

Sounds fine to me. You bailed some Ventrue's idiot childe out of jail and kept his nose clean. In return, he taught you a minor discipline.

You just had to start with Poleritude, didn't you? Don't let it go to your head. ;)

Shadow Lodge

Hey, I'm a Brujah, who's a cop. It makes perfect sense.

I won't go to his head - he'll just be scarier when he looses it.

The very first level of Presence, "Awe," works wonders when dealing with mortal antagonists. Just saying.

Shadow Lodge

Male Human (Sometimes) Gamer/Writer/Husband

Flashing a bade and intimidating the s*&t out of someone works too. Although, perhaps he could simply save the favor up and use it later, thus keeping Presence instead of Fort.

Tell you what, I'll roll a d10. An even number I'll keep Fort. An odd number, and I'll use Presence instead. Deal?

Shadow Lodge

Male Human (Sometimes) Gamer/Writer/Husband

Evens is Fort, Odds is Pres. (1d10=10)

Evens it is. I'll keep Fort.

PsionicFox wrote:

*laughs*

It's your character, man. I'm not telling you what you can and cannot do here. The way the character stands right now is just fine if that's what you want to do. You will be the uncontested combat machine in the party. That's not necessarily a bad thing, either. I just want to be sure that you'll have something to do other than combat because this game isn't going to be one fight scene after another.

I just want you to put together the best character for you.

Shadow Lodge

He's got plenty to keep me happy. A good story, some fun hooks... I haven't had the chance to play a "I can rip off your arms and beat you to death with the wet ends." For a very long time, so he suits me right down to the ground.

I'm happy.

EDIT: Considering I just rolled a ten (see above), I'm all good.

Masked

I was here the whole time.

Ok, in fact I didn't notice this thread until this morning. I was tracking Fatespinner's posts, but not ST Guy's. Anyone using a newsreader should note that the reader will see these as two different sources and will not automatically track the alias's posts as coming from the main profile. This sounds so obvious now that I've realized it. Now tracking this thread and both Fate's and ST Guy's posts. I should be more on point, now.

Yep, it does. In fact, it works a little better considering.

Awesome! Everyone is confirmed except Karelzarath, who assures me he will talk to me this evening to generate his character. Once he's anchored in, I'll work up the plot ties and probably throw an opening post up over the weekend or possibly on Monday.

Cheers!

Jonquil wrote:

Cool beans. So, this means that your character was torpid for both World Wars, the Great Depression, and Prohibition. Neat! It will be amusing to see a character who was raised with late 1800s values, missed out on the most traumatic events in recent world history, and suddenly came back into the swing of things just in time for the Hippee Era!

HUZZAH! Okay, now to tie everyone together, strap you to a tree, and bash you with a shovel! I'll try to have something up sometime on Monday to get us kicked off. Because PbP does tend to take a lot of time, I'm going to be taking some liberties with getting the characters involved with one another in the opening posts. That way you don't all start out as complete strangers and have to awkwardly seek a reason to hang out together.

Fates> I added in a proper bg for you. The latest of the late. It's at the bottom of my sheet. I should probably know Isaac from the drug element other than that I don't know.

Edit- Oh and Juan Pablo by Clan. I just noticed.

Today has been crazy busy at work, so I haven't had time to put a starter post together yet. I hope to do so after I get home tonight, though it will likely have to wait until my daughter goes to bed.

Hey there, just wondering about the game status...

It actually completely skipped my mind that Thanksgiving was last week until the weekend before, so I was running around doing a lot of stuff in the few days leading up to it so I wasn't able to get things kicked off properly. I'm still here, though, and I should have something up for you all this afternoon.

Whee! I was worried that this had died.

Jonquil wrote:

Nope, it's still alive and kicking. Sorry about the delays, guys. I had intended to put some stuff together at work last week but then realized that I only had 3 days to get everything I needed to do out of the way before the extended weekend. I'm writing the opening as we speak, however, and I hope to get it up on the boards before I leave work.

Wrath, pfft - I have Poleritude. Plus, I smoke. I'm to badass for you.

Nice plan, piss off the ST, give him a challenge he can't resist. Did you forget about the whole 'the dice say what I want them to say' ST power?

Ummm, I'd like to revoke my previous statement. No, I don't want to experience your wrath, please forgive me my rash behavior.

Now, just hope he doesn't get mad...
