Clark says: Competition Still Wide Open!

Yes, we have gotten a bunch of great submissions, but there is still plenty of room for your great submission!

Please dont think, "Oh, I havent turned mine in yet, they probably have too many good ones, so I wont bother." DON'T THINK LIKE THAT!

This thing is still wide open.

Erik, Wolfgang and I are having a blast and are putting tons of time into reviewing these submissions. Believe me when I tell you that while we have gotten some really good ones there is still room for more. There is still room in the top 32 for a bunch more great items.

This thing is far from over. So send in that submission! :)

Good luck everyone.

Marathon Voter Season 8

Would it be correct to assume that even if you did make a list of "32 finalists", an eleventh-hour submission on the last day could bump one off if it's good enough?

I think that is a fair assumption, can you imagine paizo publishing a list and your name pops up at 33?

Legendary Games, Necromancer Games

We are taking the best 32. I dont care when they are submitted. All will be reviewed and the best 32 taken. An 11th hours submission absolutely could be in the top 32. Heck, the top 32 could all be last minute submissions. We are committed to taking the best 32, period.

And its not like there are 32 locks for the top spot in right now. There is room for your good submissions.

So get those submissions cranking!

Liberty's Edge

Plus, when you look at the cutoff date versus when the winner is announced, well, they've got time to review any last minute choices.

*chuckles*

I do not envy you folk, at all.

We're hitting the "reject" button fairly often, but I'm pleased by the number of high-quality entries. Cutting it down to that final 32 is going to be an interesting discussion.

And by interesting, I mean we've all got some clear preferences that do not necessarily align. But we know Superstar work when we see it.

Yes and my stomach is cramping while we wait. Talk about presure! Still, I wouldn't want to be the one to make the final cut, no sir. I can almost envision a 12 angry men jurior's senario on the last day as the judges hash out who's who on the 32.

I can't believe we've got to wait until after Thanksgiving to see who the contestants are! It's killing me.

Well, I am actually thinking about the next task on that list so that's the only thing from keeping me from exploding, since I have to do it anyways for some homebrew stuff im doing for my next game, so two birds, and all that jazz.

This process has been really fun so far. I'd like to echo the comments of my fellow judges. We've seen some absolutely wonderful stuff so far, but by no means is this contest in the bag.

So if you haven't submitted yet, get to it! There is still more than enough time left to win this thing.

Star Voter Season 7

This is a cool competition. Love the idea guys.

Legendary Games, Necromancer Games

This process is still wide open. Submit your wondrous items for our review.

We have a bunch of really good items. But the list of true knock our socks off items is still small enough that people can get into the final 32.

Don't give up! Submit that entry! Don't "cut yourself" by not submitting.

We want you to make our cut down job as hard as possible.

Good luck everyone!

Whoohoo! Thanks for giving us some last minute encouragement Clark.

I wasn't going to enter and didn't have an idea. But then I stopped and considered, "it's for fun, and I still got my day job." Then I vowed that I had this Sunday to come up with, refine, and finish an idea. Meeting a deadline like a real writer. And now that I've done it... it feels pretty good!

Liberty's Edge

How soon can we find out whether or not we've been early-rejected?

Legendary Games, Necromancer Games

You wont know about early rejection until the 32 are posted. And even then, you will likely just know that you werent top 32. I doubt we will distinguish between those that were quick rejected and those that were in contention for the top 32 but just missed out.

Of course, if you want to go word count your submission you can tell pretty quick. If you were over 250 words you were likely auto-rejected without even getting read.

When you all post the final 32, are you going to post a name of the creator with it?

Dark Archive Contributor, RPG Superstar 2008 Top 4

The only annoying part about these occasional “We still want entries!” pep-talks, near identical as they are to the pep-talks that I’m giving to all of my players – because I want to, if beaten, know that I was beaten by the best, and I'd take it as rather personal vindication and validation if someone that I knew, ran, played with, gamed under, coached, edited or had shaken hands with won this thing, even if I'm left in smoking ruin – is that I keep having visions of our judges glancing at my entry, rolling their eyes, and tossing it in the ‘burn pile’.

Silly fear, I know. And, obviously, all the best to the winners – better writers, better game for all of us players and DMs.

But . . . oi. Looks like I picked the wrong week to stop sniffing glue.

On those submissions you do comment on, will we get to see the comments?

FaxCelestis wrote:

I believe previous posts have stated that they will likely not open the commenting of itmes up in their entirety--even on the accepted 32. Concerns about allowing the judges to post freely and without concern for how their comments might be viewed outside the closed setting.

That said, they have discussed turning some comments into a design article/workshop.

I'm sorry that I'm not linking the specific posts, but a bit too busy(or lazy) at the moment.

Paizo Employee Chief Creative Officer, Publisher

I actually think we will post full comments on the winning items, and I further think each winning item will appear as a thread others may comment on as well.

I believe all of my fellow judges are comporting themselves as though their comments on the contenders might be read, so I don't think there's much reason to hide the comments.

Some of them are really instructive, I think. A few of the ultimately rejected items will probably have 12 or more comments about some aspect of rules balance or conceptual flaws or what have you. Some of the winning entries likely will too.

We've got a couple days left in the competition, and there is absolutely still room for someone to jump immediately into the Final 32. We've got a lot of great items and a lot of almost great items, but there is always room for more.

I encourage all interested parties to throw caution to the wind and make a submission. You could be the next RPG Superstar!

I hope not...otherwise this might turn into a popularity contest instead of a quality item vote by the readers. People like Fake Healer or Sebastian might come out good if people know that they are assiciated with "said item." I know I would vote for Sebastian, cuz he rocks (well mosty of the time)!!!!

Legendary Games, Necromancer Games

Seriously, this thing is still wide open. The last entry will get the same review and consideration as the first. While we are real happy with the quality of the submissions, there is room at the top. So dont get discouraged if you havent submitted yet. There is still time, and there is still room to make the top 32. Believe me. Erik, Wolfgang and I really really want you guys to make this as hard on us as possible.

Yes, we have gotten good submissions. And yes, if we stopped right now we could easily pick 32 really good ones. But that doesnt mean this is over.

Your item is better than you think! I know how it is to be a writer. You sometimes think your item seems so deriavative and so been there done that. But believe me that is just because you are so familiar with it. I'm sure it is great and unique.

So go review and submit that entry!!! The other judges and I are dying to see what you guys come up with.

Marathon Voter Season 6

So here's a question what time today is the cut off? I've been busy as Satan in Vegas and haven't had much time to work on this so when is the slide it under the door cut off?

Paizo Employee Senior Software Developer

Just under two hours from now.

Go! Go! Go!

Marathon Voter Season 6

Well it's better than I was expecting. I figured I was buggered.

I had misread and thought it had said 300 words or less, is there any way to fix it now?

Legendary Games, Necromancer Games

Tick tock!

Get those final submissions in!

Seriously, this thing is wide open. We have essentially held off on review since last night to wait for the final ones to be submitted.

There is room for your item in the top 32!

Good luck everyone and I cannot wait to read the final batch and dig into them with my fellow judges!

Just submitted my entry a few minutes ago. That leaves just under an hour by my clock. If you haven't submitted yet, get a move on! If nothing else, should be fun waiting the next two weeks to see if we made the cut.

If you do post the items with comments, will you rank them 1-32 with 1 the best item in the judges scoring and 32 being the item that was on the cuff of making/not making it?

Legendary Games, Necromancer Games

I dont think we will rank them. But I'll have to check with Erik on that. I think we will just say "here they are, and here are some of our comments about each one." Then you guys decide.

No, but maybe just maybe if you had less than 210 words you can still compete.

Well, that bites, so when's the next time this happens? lol

We will not rank the Top 32. They will just be listed as the Top 32.

Five minutes to go folks!

That's time to write up a Wondrous Item! YOU CAN DO EET!

Crap, went back to check my math and missed the deadline.... Oh well... maybe next contest. :)

Paizo Employee Chief Creative Officer, Publisher

Wow.

There were A LOT of entries. I'm not sure we're ready to reveal how many, but you can be sure that Clark, Wolfgang, and I have the next two weeks cut out for us.

Grrr. Totally missed the "noon" part of the deadline. Here I am putting the finishing touches on my thingy at 12:30 Pacific time. Stupid, stupid, me.

So is this a polite way of saying,

"we have gotten some really good ones but the majority just aren't good enough to make the top thirty-two"

*LOL*

I feel for you. I kept thinking that I hadn't created any really interesting magic items under 3.5 rules, despite having DMed for 29 years. Then about 5 minutes ago I thought of one that I might submit, checked the guidelines, and saw that I'd missed the deadline by, hmm, about an hour and a half. Ah well, with my luck it wouldn't have even made the top 32, much less won anything. :-(

I wasn't planning to post at all, but had a dream last night of this magic item which I am sure was inspired by a dog walking all over me in my sleep. Anyway I thought it might be an omen so I went with it.

Well, that's a good thing. Anyone who didn't make the cut will feel a lot better if they're among 2,000 people that didn't make it vs. "What? There were 33 entries and mine wasn't picked??"

According to the RPG superstar page, over 850 submissions were made... that means that less than 5% of entries will make the cut. This is worse odds (though not by a whole lot) than the cut in the open call for W3.

I'm a sucker for dream inspirations, and act on them regularly. Great story and best of luck to you. Sleep tight!
