They look great-no idea how to make those myself, so greatly appreciated--do you print them out to 5'/hex scale, and then somehow cover up the areas they haven't explored yet? Or am I missing something entirely?

Happy anniversary!

Happy anniversary!

Quick reply before I address everybody..

That was a question I had! LOL!

To be frank, I experimented. At one point I took some scrap paper from work, and then some scotch tape that I'd rubbed my fingers against to sort of mess up the adhesive with the grease on my hands, and then taped blank sections over the parts that had yet to be revealed. It didn't work so well. When I rolled the maps up, the tape didn't tear the map (which was good), but it came loose, and rolled up even as we held the corners of the map down. With the cover sections rolling up, they could actually see the rooms I was trying to hide, even if they didn't comment on it.

Then we just used sheets of paper and slid them around, and that was awkward too. Then I got creative when I got to Thistletop.

By the time I got to the Goblin Fortress and the levels below... I actually took a glue stick and glued the map to a sheet of inexpensive white poster board. A glue stick will give you a very light layer of glue instead of pooling up and soaking the paper. Then I cut around the fortress, and cut out the individual rooms- making a sort of jigsaw puzzle in a frame out of it (like those puzzles you got a little child). I marked room connections with matching symbols on the back of the pieces to help with little corridor rooms that looked alike.

Since I didn't do the thick stone walls surrounding the corridors of the lower levels of Thistletop saving toner), I would just lay out each room like dungeon tiles, as they walked through it.

(Or will, they're just about to encounter Ripnugget).

Okay.. a second batch has been mailed out. I used GentleGiant's modification of the Glassworks to make it all one file instead of two, plus the basement. Thanks be to GentleGiant!

The Anniversery was great, thank you for all the well wishes. We just watched an interview and then it was time for Heroes (the TV series). My wife was cool with it, she's an ex-role-player. She only gave it up because she found a career that she loves that doesn't give her as much free time. But she understands gamers.

I am delighted that people like them that much! Flattered even.

I might go back to doing more detailed backgrounds, because I found a buddy in the local gaming community that works for an agency that can plot in color.. that won't notice the toner cartridges being used as much as mine will.

I work in construction, and in theory, we only print in black and white, so when the color cartridges got used up it was a strange mystery, after that I started making more basic maps.

A couple notices...

*James Jacobs has pointed out elsewhere that starting with Chapter 3, PDFs will allow you to take a program like Photoshop and Paint Shop Pro, and lift the tag layer off. That will be a simple way to get some maps too.

* I wouldn't have done this if Erian_7 hadn't paved the way, showing what a big difference it can make.

* Lastly, all this combat map stuff was given to you for free. It would be illegal to expect anything back. One way you *can* give back is buy more Paizo stuff. Seriously. I'd like to see Pathfinder be a solid brand in it's own right, regardless of what WOTC does. If your players think that my maps make a big difference.. Tell them that your gaming group shouldn't stop there. They should pitch in to help the GM buy the Rise of the Runelord Item Cards for a mere 10 bucks. Or the Rise of the Runelords Map Folio . After all, I don't draw well enough to do a lot of outside terrain. And everyone should get a copy of the Pathfinder Gazeteer.

And I'll keep you posted with what I do in Chapter Two...

Sovereign Court

Oh patootie! I forgot to give you my email too.

This is a brilliant idea! *yoink!*

One thing I like to do (when I've used Map Packs, Dungeon tiles, and the like) is use a little bit of Fun Tack to hold them in place against the tabletop or blank gridmap. This works wonders for keeping the little buggers from sliding around and misaligning themselves. In fact, a little dot of the wonderstuff on the base of the minis, as well, makes the inevitable table bumps less of an in-game earthquake.

If anyone could forward me the maps i'd appreciate it!

I've been very busy at work and real life for the past few days.

Also lurking in the Pathfinder chat till 1:15 am Tuesday/Wednesday night didn't help. :P Damn you west coasters! I am frequently at those chats, usually disguised. Last time I was 'Hal Jordan', the time before I was 'Nilbog 4th Edition'.
**********************
Here's why I just don't send the maps during a break at work:

My maps were made with Dundjinni. Dundjinni's EULA is pretty restrictive on what you can do with the maps you create. It's one of my negative issues with recommending it at all. It's an art program with restrictions on what you can do with what you create with it afterwards.. If I had known there was going to be complicated questions about what I could do with the maps I made from modules just for personal and non-commercial use, I probably would have never bought the damn thing in the first place.

Consequently, I felt I was bending some rules by sending them out in the first place. There's also been discussion elsewhere about this, both on this forum and on Fluid Entertainment's forum.

At the end of the day, I did something I've never done in my life before: I sat down and I carefully read a EULA for a piece of software. I didn't ask for someone else's interpretation, or accept third party second hand information, I studied it myself.

And, as a result, I believe that I can become fully compliant with their rules and share my maps.

The real important stuff is:
* I'm not a Paizo Employee
* I'm not being compensated, by them, or anybody else
* Nobody is making any money off of it without a licensing agree to do so

And thus far I'm 100% in complaince. It's all for free, kids. But there's a few extra things that need to be observed.

What needs to happen is that I need to title the maps, and credit the fact that I made them with Dundjinni, and put their logo on the map itself (like a compass rose). I feel it would be a forthright and cool thing to also note that they're based on Paizo's work, and credit Paizo as well. If the EULA cites that Dundjinni gets some free advertising, then so be it, so will Paizo.

(Fluid Entertainment is not my favorite company, but by respecting them, I'm also showing respect for Paizo. And it's the Law)

Now there has been some goobledegook discussion differentiating the artwork that is included with Dundjinni versus what is imported in a .PNG file format (and thus is user based). Volunteers who administer Fluid's site have done their best to try to interpret the EULA, and now I have sat down and read it word for word by myself, I believe they're incorrect on some points. Actual representatives from Fluid, in a rare post, spell out scenarios involving using and posting artwork, mostly from a commercial sale point of view. The source of the misinformation comes from, I believe, misapplying the definitions of "non-commercial use" and "commercial" use. Ultimately, having read and studied the EULA carefully myself, I'll be acting in good faith.

I swear to read the post from an actual employee, I swear it never entered their mind that someone might want to reproduce a map from a module for personal and non-commercial use. They address quite strong commercial usage, but in their posted examples, they're nebulous about non-commercial. Hence the confusion. And their poor volunteers try to answer questions, but it's only their interpretation.

So.. I am holding off before sending any more maps until I'm confident that everything is cool. I'll modify the maps tonight, and see if I can send a third batch out.

*********************

Good news!

If some of you thought the maps for Chapter One were good.. I'll ACTUALLY TRY to make better ones for Chapter Two.

And I'll see about sending the third batch out tonight.

Hi! I'd also like the maps, if it's not such a problem right now

Actually Paizo has given permission to share the Maps made with Dundjinni as long as NO ONE IS CHARGING for them.

I started posting some on the Dundjinni Forums but there seemed to be a lack of interest in them so I stopped Making them.

Depending on the Details of the Map, BMP files are usually to Large to post on the DJ Forums. Dj can also export in JPG and PNG files.

To cut down on one persons bandwidth Maps could be posted on Dundjinni, RPGMAPSHARE, or the Cartographer Quild Sites. Or you could get a free WEBSHOTS or Photobucket account to post to.

I saved the Email so Here is the Reply I got

""
As long as credit is given to Paizo and Chris West (or whoever the cartographer may be), and as long as the maps aren't being put up for sale... go for it! I don't have any problems at all with this.

That's not the issue Watcher! is concerned with—it's Fluid Entertainment (the makers of Dundjinni) who apparently have restrictions on distribution of files like the ones that Watcher! has created.

Vic is correct. But as I said in the previous post, there's a lot of misinformation regarding this. Fluid's boards are staffed by volunteers, and don't get me wrong, those guys do a good job of trying to help people.. but do they always know what they're talking about?

Uh uh.

I've watched them to refer people to the manual, when the manual patently doesn't address the topic at all. At one point they quote Chris Pramas praising their product, citing he is the author of Mutants and Masterminds, when that actually honor belongs to Steve Kenson. And lastly, they offer interpretations of the EULA, which I've found to be also incorrect. I'm not trying to say that they're bad folks, but I finally decided to read it myself.

And this probably wasn't all that big of a deal.. Except when you get involved in a community, you want to be of good character. That was my main concern. The first two batch of mailings had this sinister note that read "shhh.. this may not be legal, so keep it quiet.." like I was the Robin Hood of role-playing aids. I don't want Paizo to think I'm some sort of maverick with no regards to rules or laws.

But hey! That's all moot now! The maps are fixed. And I'm online to gather up some e-mails to send out another batch!

And, incidentally.. I did some minor fixes, like adding some throw pillows and blankets on a rug where Bruthazmus hangs out with his harem, some straw for the botton of the cages in the nursery, and some ashes on the altar...

Watcher! wrote:

Thank you so very much, Watcher! As I said, if there's anything I can do...

You have been a great help to me, and I'm sure to many others as well (at least, judging by the number of replies here).

Well...

I can't say that you can help me by buying more Paizo products. My maps are independent of promoting Paizo products..

But, stepping away from the maps for a moment.. You could consider buying the Map Folio or the Item Cards for yourself (not me). Or.. simply running the best game you possibly can.

When people have a good time playing Burnt Offerings, the Pathfinder brand gets a shot in the arm. Not to turn this into a 4th edition threadjack, but I believe the strong third party support companies are key to quality gaming products. I enjoy Pathfinder, so I want to see it strong and healthy. If people just have a really good time playing in the Adventure Paths, that's going to happen as a natural side-effect.

I am actually a subscriber, the subscription is (damnit) under my wife's name, we weren't aware that it would say I was a subscriber on the boards etc. I will certainly be buying item cards (unless I win the competition) and other stuff as soon as it comes out.

Well, that's happening, and you're an integral part of it. Thanks again.

Ebolav wrote:

Unless I somehow accidentally resized them, the original size of the drawing [i]should be[/b] 1 square = 1" inch. That is the base size that DJ uses, and when I export to .BMP that size shouldn't change.

Ebolav, check your printer settings and preferences, and make sure you're not printing at a reduced size at your end.

Also, I'm asked about .bmp's versus .jpg format. I tend to stick with the .bmp to maintain the quality of the image. When GentleGiant merged the Glassworks into one map as a .JPG, I didn't change it back.. but I did keep the rest as .bmp's.

How do you print these out as a series of 8.5" x 11's pages? Very carefully. Sorry, I don't have any tips for doing that.

Watcher, i hadn't printed them yet, just thought it looked small on my screen, but if it's already scaled to 1"sq, then it's a moot point-again, you ROCK :)
