Last night I had a bottle of Firestone's Velvet Merlin Oatmeal Stout. I love me some oatmeal stout.

I need to start planning my next brew. Any suggestions from fellow brew masters?

I've been enjoying recently Sam Adam's "Rebel IPA." I, personally, don't think that Sam Adam's has ever really been able to brew a decent IPA, however, this is an amazing step up for them and it's a very good IPA when compared to others. It's touted as a West Coast style IPA and it has a lot of floral character. It's also pretty strong for a Sam Adam's beer at 6.5%.

Hmm, gotta give it to all bells brewery beers. Delicious.

The other night I tried Breckenridge Brewery's Vanilla Porter. Very not bad.

Scarab Sages

Interesting.

I think it is time for a Belgian brew again. Probably go with the La petite kit from Northern Brewer.

I have never had a bad beer from Stone.

Had a bottle of "Durty" by Smuttynose, a NH brewer. It's described as a hoppy brown ale. I enjoyed it- it was rather malty as well as hoppy but a bit heavy to drink, though.

Definitely worth a taste.

A bit depressing to be greeted to a pop-up saying: "Help us to hate Hilary!" though.

Agreed. It can be very depressing and annoying when something decidedly political is forced upon an otherwise apolitical topic or setting. Luckily, we have beer.

Article on band's signature beers

Iron Maiden's Trooper is the only one I've drunk (it was wet and alcoholic - that's all I remember about it); the Mastodon Double Black IPA is the one I'm most interested in trying.

Tonight I'm drinking a Rodeo Clown Double IPA from Karbach Brewing Co. Very not bad.

How can one possibly have a favorite beer when there is a whole world full of beer to explore?

It is the conundrum which proves the enigma which validates the puzzle.

In other words, I had been drinking when I created the thread.

I'm quite fond of the blue Chimay.

My everyday (not that I drink every day) beer goes through a rotation. Killian's, Shotgun Betty, maybe Red Stripe in the summer.

I have to say, I've never had an Indian beer I didn't like. Kingfisher, Haywards 5000, Old Monk 10000--all excellent. There are a lot more out there but these are the ones I've tried.

I interpret it as a place to discuss my favorite beer *at this moment*.

Which is still a tie between Notch Pils and Baxter's Phantom Punch Winter Stout, depending on how chewy I want my drink to be.

Kingfisher has a softness which makes it perfect with spicy food: which is pretty fitting.

Cobra is a less impressive Indian beer.

I'm trying to find a UK stockist for Premier Cru, a great, clean, crisp French lager.

I always thought of this thread as a series of reports on the forumgoers' search for their favorite beer. I can't say I've found mine yet.

Tried Great Lakes Blackout Stout. Pretty solid, still not sure if I'd say it's my favorite. Pricey too. Glad I got it, but I guess I'd better keep looking.

Who can recommend a good Scottish ale that's avail in America, state of Minnesota? I've had Leinies and Dirty B@3t@rd.

Try Old Chub by Oskar Blues and Claymore by Great Divide. I think both are available nationally.

Sovereign Court

The best Scottish ale in Minnesota is in my basement :) Though I don't sell my wares, not yet anyway. I'd second old chub for store bought.

Pan you manificent b! I both admire and loathe you all at once. Send me a pint and we'll call it square. ;)

Anyway thanks for the suggestions.

Oh, and funny story about homebrewed libations. So a buddy of mine made some mead and brought it to a weekender game. Although I know WHAT mead is I didn't realize it wasn't the same as beer, so he brings it in, sets it down, and runs out to get settled elsewhere in the rental property. I and a couple other gents pour out huge glasses of the stuff, plus one for the brewer, and toast the weekend. We then proceeded to chug full glasses of mead.

...

We spent the first afternoon of the weekend hammered. The mead brewer friend chastised us saying his stuff was supposed to be sipped, chased by regular beer and last us ALL weekend. Needless to say the first few hours of gaming were epic.

Sovereign Court

Fantastic story Mark. I am about to put down two batches of Mead. I tend to do a lot at once since it takes so damn long to ferment and age. I also do some pretty involved stuff like Blackberry mellowmel, earl grey metheglins, etc.

I frickin love beer. I've had a couple over the last few hours and just love the whole experience. I don't get this way over all alcohol nor do I get hammered, but a nice beer buzz coaxing along into a warmer evening (for MN anyway) is a really nice time.

FYI for the folks and their excellent suggestions I couldn't find anything other than this Founders for scotch ales. Maybe I didn't look hard enough. I think as things thaw out around here I'll be visiting this thread more often for suggestions, so keep this up and alive.

The scotch ale I used to get was called McEwan's, an import that I used to have to go to Maine to get (don't think I ever saw it in NH). Sam Adams used to release a scotch ale as part of one of their seasonal variety packs but I haven't seen that in years, either.

I was up at Barley Johns a local micro brew pub. The brewmaster there took the house IPA and added jalapeno peppers to a cask of it for a week. One of the best brews Ive had in awhile so I know now what I am doing next. Seeds were removed so you only got the spicy tangy taste of the jalapeno without the heat.

I recently tried woodchuck hard cider and kinda liked it, unlike the champaigny docs hard cider i tried a few months ago.

Anybody tried Ghost Face Killah? Brewed with 6 hot peppers, supposedly including the legendary Ghost Chili, I can't imagine it is a sublime experience. But I am intrigued...

I've had Cave Creek Chili beer, and it tasted like vomit. GFK definitely has a cooler name, but at a wild guess it's probably not very tasty.

I've had Dogfish Head's Theobrama; it's brewed with cocoa and chili pepper, but subtly enough that it's all aftertaste, and not a vomit-ey, burn-your-mouth off disaster. On the other hand, Long Trail's Ramble, brewed with lemon zest and peppercorns, tasted very much like spiced pencil shavings.

Started my first batch of homebrew since I was, ooh, 15 on Thursday. If it works (thanks to nightly prayers to Cayden), I'll be swimming in stout for quite some time. If it doesn't, does anyone have an alternative use for 40 pints or so of alcoholic slurry?

Sovereign Court

Make sure to give your stout some time to develop Limey. I find that porters and stouts need longer to rest than pales and browns. Of course, I tend to do fancy stuff like bourbon barrel porters with french oak in the carboy so that might have something to do with it :)

I can't stand dry ciders at all. To me, a hard cider should be sweet and taste like apples. That's why I'm drinking cider instead of champaign, after all.

Harpoon Celtic Red is a pretty good ale. It has just the flavor you'd expect from an Irish Red. I wouldn't say it's the best, but it works well for what it is.

I tried Fat Tire Amber Ale, but I was distracted enough by some major drama totally unrelated to the beer that it ruined the experience, so I can't give any solid feedback. I'd have to try it again.

Warsteiner was pretty average for a German lager. It's exactly what I'd reach for if I wanted something refreshing that I could drink quickly on a hot day, but I probably wouldn't drink it otherwise. I feel the exact same about Stella Artois.

Tonight I shall try Sierra Nevada's Ruthless Rye.

Scarab Sages

Firestone has become a new favorite. Last night I had a big bottle of their Double Jack double IPA. Not bad.

In the grocery store on Saturday, I found four packs of one of my all around favorites from Dogfish Head - Burton Baton! Woot!!!

Warsteiner is a pretty average mass-product Pilsner, not really good, not very bad.

It is one of the most wide spread german beers, kind of like a german budweiser

I just had a Sion Kölsch, it was ok but There are Kölschs I like more like Mühlen or Päffgen

Scarab Sages

I've had Warsteiner before. Not bad.

Scarab Sages

Tonight, however, I'm drinking Deschutes Brewery's Hop Henge Experimental IPA. Cascade, Centennial and Chinook hops, along with two new experimental varieties. 8.8% Very hoppy. I like it.

Sovereign Court

I have two 6 gallon carboys burping away in my kitchen. Chinook IPA and an orange blossom mead. Ill let you know how they turn out in weeks/months from now. :)

Scarab Sages

That reminds me. I've got to rack my mead to another carboy.

Another weekend approaches and the age old question arises, Which Beer shall it be this weekend

Oooh, there's 5 gallons each of homebrew hefeweizen and bourbon porter sitting in my closet.

The objective was to forget about them for as long as possible, and you folks just reminded me!

They should definitely be ready by now. Thanks!

Sovereign Court

Bourbon porter just gets better and better totally go to the hefeweizen first!

Silver Crusade

I have decided on Kona longboard lager for this weekend. A standard but still good beer

Scarab Sages

Huzzah! Grocery store had big bottles of Dogfish Head's 75 Minute IPA!!!

Finally found a place in town with Ommegang's "Game of Thrones" Fire and Blood Red Ale on draft.

That was some seriously tasty beer.
