Female Human (Chelaxian) Knight 1/Fighter 1/Paladin 1 (2)

That was just lovely, JSL... I'm giggling mightily here. Thank you.

Ehlissa grimly turns and goes to aid Naelah's lupine companion. In contrast to the manic glee of Slidell or the soul-searching of Corran, the Magnimaran noble is determined and calm now after her earlier outburst. As the farm worker threshes the grain, so she approaches her work. move to C5. no fighting challenge this time

She looks the goblin straight in the eye, and lunges for him!

Hit, hit, hit the naughty goblin.. or not in this case (1d20+3=9)

Male Human Ranger 1

Corran sprints around the wagon and attempts to dismember the distracted goblin with a quick slash.

Move to B17, and then I hit a 14 with the flanking bonus included. 11 points of damage.

Corran:
The Square rings with the sound of steel on stone as you slice through the wounded goblin, severing its head from its neck. Veren sits and looks at you expectantly.

You also have a +4 for the goblin being knocked prone by Veren, so you hit, killing it outright

Ehlissa:
No point in going after that goblin, so I'll move you to the other one. Still a miss, though.

Vesh... (w/ flank and aid from Slidell for +4)

Queue The Karate Kid music: You're the best around!...

Vesh can feel his anger burning in his chest and tastes bile in the back of his throat. As Slidell ably distracts the goblin, Vesh swings with his short sword at its open side.

Attack hits a 19; Damage = 4

...Nothing's gonna ever keep you down! Thank you, Slidell!

Vesh:
The last goblin's cackling smile turns to a look of disdain as it falls lifeless from the end of your blade.

All:
You all pause to survey what has become of Church Square. The smoke from the burning cart beside you is mixing with a mild fog blown in from the Gulf leaving an acrid haze in the air and blocking out the moon and stars. You hear the occasional shout and clash of steel in the distance, but see no more evidence of goblins or other combatants in the square.

Father Zantus and two acolytes approach from the east bearing heavy buckets - presumably to fight the fire. When they see you, they pull up short and drop the buckets.

"Are any hurt?", the Father asks, "Fillan, bring the holy decanter."

At once, one of the acolytes sprints back to the cathedral while the Father and the other acolyte rush to examine Naelah.

Meanwhile, you spot the fellow who was fighting beside you earlier returning at the South end of the square.

Enter Malcolm

Male Human Wizard 2/Sor 1

As the last goblin falls beneath Vesh's blade, Slidell gives him a wide grin.
"Good job." He offers, leaning on his staff and favoring his leg.
When the priests enter the square and ask after the wounded, Slidell seems to forget his own leg as he remembers his earlier worry and rushes with the priests to check on Naelah and the others. When it becomes obvious that she and everyone else will live, he backs up and lets those with the specialized knowledge do thier jobs. Of course he watches over thier shoulders as they work. He seems to take particular interest in thier spellcasting.

After the seriously wounded people are tended, he accepts a proper bandaging for his leg, or a MINOR cure if it is offered. Then bends low over the goblin bodies. He is not looting, but rather cataloging the similarities and differences, if any, between the bodies.

Veran glides down and lands on his master's shoulder, possibly to assist. But the heated whispering from Slidell indicates that the bird may be distracting as much as he is helping.

Slidell observes the priests at work, paying particular attention to thier spellcasting.
Time permitting, he will examine the bodies looking for items of interest. (Example-The Goblins are obviously using 3rd-rate gear. So a masterwork, magical or similar item should stand out like a sore thumb.) He has also heard that there is more than one tribe in the area, so he is looking for something that might indicate which tribe was foolish enough to attack a town!

He will continue to examine the bodies in the area until brought into a conversation, (by Malcolm perhaps?) or someone points out that the sounds indicate that there is more fighting to be done!

Good job BTW @JSL, I love your decriptions of the goblins and thier reactions!

Vesh gives Slidell a sidelong look, "Pits in my sword blade, indeed!" He cracks an uncharacteristic smile at the lanky mage.

For all that has happened today, Vesh can't help but feel more exhilarated than overwhelmed. Quite suddenly, he finds himself looking at the faces around him.

Ehlissa and Corran, only met minutes--maybe seconds--ago are like childhood friends to him for some inexplicable reason. Sitting next to them at Ameiko's, and fighting next to them just now, creates a bond that Vesh is at a loss of words to explain.

Vesh watches Slidell as he looks over the bodies of the dead goblins. It is hard for Vesh to believe that he thought Slidell, with his odd manners and manic way of speaking, was trying to poison him earlier today. Vesh feels a laugh bubbling out of him as he watches Slidell engage in a whispered argument with Veran, a laugh that is quickly stifled when he sees Veren padding over to Naelah from the other side of the Wagon.

A stone drops into Vesh's stomach at the site of the Shoanti girl sitting on the hay bale, Father Zanthus at her side. She seems smaller and more fragile than before. Vesh feels a mixture of anger and overwhelming sadness as he looks at her bloodstained hair--an outrage of red on snowy white.

As Vesh stands considering her, he hears hurried footsteps approaching from behind. Sword still drawn, he spins but sees that it is just the sailor from earlier. The sailor--what was his name?--approaches carrying something in his arms.
----------------------
Vesh is at 4/7 hp.

Naelah sits heavily on the hay bale as the goblins go down, one after another. She can hear her keka's voice in her head, Foolish girl! You were born of the wind. It flows from your heart, not between your ears! Veren pads up to her, his snout bloodied, but otherwise unhurt.

She watches the flames rising from the cart and knows, with a few more seconds, she could have called forth water and that there would be no burning cart. But, the goblins had made a mess of her plans, and her side and back as well. From the swirling haze and smoke, she sees a man running towards her. Keka?

No, not keka. The man they call Nathal, the Khasht of Desna. He has kind eyes. The man bends and examines her wounds. In common she tells him, "Hurry, Nathal, I do not think this storm has blown over yet," as she scratches Veren's head.

Shoanti:

Spoiler:

Keka = Poppi
Nathal = Father
Khasht = Priest

Naelah is currently at 2/9 hp; Veren is at 8/9 hp.

Ehlissa goes up to Corran and asks, "Are you alright, Corran? You seemed... well... taken aback when... at the start of the fight." The girl places a hand on his shoulder, "It was like that for me too, the first time I- the first man I killed. It wasn't pleasant. It still isn't."

I dash into the square with an armful of weapons and several quivers hanging from my back. I come to a halt in front of "I got two bows, two crossbows, and three slings." I say dumping the weapons on the ground, along with some ammunition. I bow to the rest of the group and say "Well, I suppose we're all defending Sandpoint together aren't we? I'm Sir Malcolm of Riddleport, sailor by trade." I bow again and kiss Ehlissa's hand "An honor to fight alongside a noblewoman." and to Naelah I bow and say "It is a rare pleasure to meet one of your people, particularly one so beautiful." with a broad smile.
I turn to father Zantus and ask "Father, I was wounded by some of those goblins. I don't suppose you could heal a few of my wounds? I would find it most disappointing if a lowly goblin brought me down on this day. It seems as though none of us escaped unharmed."
Presuming these were available, I brought a longbow, a shortbow, two light crossbows and three slings.

Sir Malcolm of Riddleport wrote:

That's fine.

Father Zantus and the other acolyte, whose name you gather is Tevim, barely acknowledge your presence while tending to Naelah. After what seems like an eternity, Fillan returns with a crystal flask emblazoned with the holy symbol of Desna. A red liquid, the color of blood, fills the bottle.

Father Zantus holds the decanter to Naelah's lips and gently administers a draught of the fluid. Immediately her wounds cease bleeding and her torn skin begins to mend. She stands unsteadily with the help of the acolytes, who help her walk towards the cathedral. Veren quietly pads behind, giving you as sorrowful glance as you can imagine from a wolf before disapearing around the corner after the Shoanti and her caretakers.

Yes, it would have been better if I reduced her to -5 or something, but it deals with our lack of PsiFox for the present. She will be welcome to rejoin if he returns.

Turning to face the rest of you, Father Zantus straightens up before giving a slight bow to each of you in turn. In contrast to his neat appearance earlier today, his robes are caked with mud and his face is caked with sweat and dirt.

"My humble apologies. I am Zantus, servant of Desna. Come, ye wounded and drink from the decanter."

A drought from the decanter is a cure minor wounds. A given creature can benefit from at most two draughts per day. So you can each heal one or two points of damage.

I see that Ehlissa posted but I can't see it.
I take two draughts of the liquid and thank the father.
That brings me up to 5hp

Female Human (Chelaxian) Knight 1/Fighter 1/Paladin 1 (2)

Ehlissa graciously accepts Malcolm kissing her hand and then wipes it on her breeches when no-one is looking.

"Sir Malcolm," Of Riddleport, notes Vesh, "thank you for the weapons ... If no one minds," Says Vesh as he stoops, frowning again, to pick up the shortbow and a quiver of arrows, "I am accurate with a shortbow."

And, in that instant, Naelah and Veren are gone. Vesh swallows hard, and then turning to the priest, he approaches and kneels before him in the Varisian manner. "Father," Vesh starts, "I am but a wayward follower of The Song of Spheres, a sinner, but I am on the road. I would drink, Father, and pray that you watch over the Shoanti girl and her wolf."

Vesh drinks twice (and is at 6/7 hp).

I nod at Vesh "Yes, of Riddleport. Is that an issue?"

Sorry, I italicize what Vesh is thinking. That wasn't supposed to be out loud, but let's just assume he did say it out loud and didn't realize it. It's the kind of thing Vesh might do.

Vesh catches himself and says quickly, "No. I am lately from Riddleport myself." He then continues to busy himself with the bow and arrows before Malcolm can question him further.

Vesh goes on to do the actions described above.

Male Human Wizard 2/Sor 1

"Thank you father." Slidell murmurs as he accepts a drink from the flask. His wounded leg now fully restored except for a slight scar, he hands the decanter back to Zanthus, taking a moment to inspect the symbols on his robes.
"Take good care of her please, father." He says, motioning to where the last glimpse of Neahlah and her companion could be seen entering the chapel. "She is,... a very special young lady." He finishes, obviously thinking more than he's saying.

With that Slidell turns his attention back to the square, looking as if hes forgotten something. He scans the square, whispering to Veran. His attention is drawn to the pair of warriors, and to the newly-returned sailor and his pile of bows. Grinning as he passes Vesh, who is heading towards the Priest, Slidell approaches the sailor.

"Well-met! Sir Malcolm was it? Slidell, sometimes called the Stomraven, at your service!" He beams as he sticks out his hand in greeting. "Quite a bit of excitement for a festival isn't it? Tho I doubt that they were on the program originally." He continues, nodding at the nearest goblin body. "Candy?" he says as he sticks out his other hand holding the now-familiar paper wrapper. His eyes flicker briefly up and down the lean sailor's figure as he notes the clothing, weapons, and accessories of weapon-bearer.

Doing the sherlock thing, anything noteworthy on Malcolm, or from my earlier inspection of the Goblin bodies? Rolled a 15 & 16 Here.
I have a feeling that this conversation will be cut short, Slidell's just trying to squeeze in his daily requirement of conversation before the next bout!

"I'm alright, thank you." Corran rips a piece of cloth of a dead goblin's clothes and starts to clean his blade. "I've been in fights before, and training, but this was... different."

One stroke, and I ended a life. A goblin life, but still.... was it supposed to be this easy? Two or three dead at my hands, and I feel no guilt, for they were the aggressor, and I did my duty. But that could have been me, laying here split open in the sun. Will I still stand strong if I am wounded like Ehlissa or Naelah was?

Corran stands, and rinses his mouth out with his waterskin. "If the square is secure, we should go and seek out where we could help more. For a raid like this, there must be more goblins to slay or fires to put out."

Good point. I'll take the longbow if no else needs it. But I'd probably serve best as the first into melee, since I think I have the highest AC at the moment. Plus I'm more effective in close combat when I can full attack with both sword and shield

"Wayward, eh?", Father Zantus chuckles, a mischievous gleam in his eye, "I think the Winged Lady would have it no other way. To sin in Desna's eye would be to sit still, to not act, to care nothing for the world or those in it. Son, your actions today - and those of your friends - are the Song, the Glory of Desna! Take heart in the world and enjoy living; Desna's blessing comes to those who deserve it, who need it, who use it."

As you each drink from the decanter, Father Zantus offers a quiet prayer on your behalf while holding his holy symbol - a silver butterfly - above your heads. Then as the last has drunk his fill, he stoppers the bottle and tucks it into his robe.

The party now benefits from bless (+1 to attack and save vs. fear)

For Slidell:

Spoiler:
The goblins are clad in pieced together armor made from the tanned hides of animals. Their weapons consist of little more than jagged pieces of steel (typically rusty) tied or pinned to simple wooden handles. The markings and dress of the two groups of goblins are disimilar.

All:
Though the Square is clear of threats and much of the fighting on Church

Does Slidell have an affection for her? He thinks to himself. Do I? The priest's word come to him.

He cannot feel encouraged by his kindness as Naelah's words intrude on his thoughts. Hurry, Nathal, I do not think this storm has blown over yet. What was she saying? What had she sensed?

Vesh cleans his blades and sheaths them. Then, strapping the quiver to his back, he strings the shortbow and carries an arrow, ready to knock it when needed.

Ehlissa nods graciously at Father Zanthus, "I thank you, Father; as my comrades have said, please take care of Naelah. She has the bravest soul of us all. And I shal pray to My Lady as well." she almost subconsciously touches the centre of her chest just below her neck.

"If there was time, I'd get my armour and-" her look of frustration turns to one of horror, "The stables!" she says too loudly, "Fleetfoot! I- Iomedae, please let her be alright!"

Male Human Wizard 2/Sor 1

Slidell stands before the sailor, listening to his reply, but his eyes almost seem to glaze as he compares his mental notes and makes and discards theories as easily as the children go through his candy. He continues to nod as if in reply even after Malcolm has stopped speaking.

As one by one his companions react to something on the other side of the square, Slidell starts to hum as if to a tune that only he can hear. Finally, after an almost human sigh, it is Veran who pecks Slidell's ear and chatters loudly but too quickly for those nearby to make what he is saying.

"Hmmm? What's that? Timmy's in the well again? OW!! What!?!" Slidell glares at his personal feathered fiend, who, with Slidell's attention now recaptured, once more chatters in common too quickly to be easily understood.

"Well why didn't you say something!? Where?"
Veran's reply is a single squawk which is an unmistakable question mark.
"Well don't just sit there like a stuffed pigeon, go and find him!"

Slidell spins to the the others as Veran launches from his shoulder and begins winging his way high towards Cliff street.
"There's still trouble, someone's calling for help, let's go!" He shouts with an enthusiastic smile. He then grabs his crossbow from where it hangs on his hip, pulls the lever and drops a bolt into place.
"Ready?" he asks as he looks up,... to find his companions already sprinting across the square.
"Hey! Wait for me!" He calls as he runs to catch up with his new friends, loaded crossbow at the ready.

Slidell got a 4 on his perception check here.

Veran got a 21 here. (Blasted showoff bird-brain!)

I presume there will be a brief exchange of chatter, which will then be followed by Slidell's actions above. If no one suggests otherwise, Slidell will take the most direct route towards the street in question, as he has been in town enough days to know that route.

As Slidell loads his crossbow, Vesh spins to address Ehlissa, Corran, and Malcolm. "Shall we?" and--turning on the spot--he runs to keep Veran in sight.

As he approaches the sounds of trouble, Vesh slows and becomes more cautious. And, though he hurries off, he never goes so far as to outdistance his companions.

"Well hello, who have we here?" Slidell asks aloud and starts forward, until the gentle yet firm hand of Vesh on his shoulder stops him. Looking at the earnest young man, Slidell gives a lopsided grin.

"Ah, yes. We have company. Slow and steady wins the race and all that. Right. In formation then?" He asks, bringing his crossbow to the ready position.

If we are going to (briefly) exchange strategy, I would suggest the 2 warriors in front side by side. (Ehlissa on Corran's left to take advantage of an Aid Another from C to get some cover from his shield.) Slidell in the middle, with Vesh & Malcolm behind him. (Putting both unarmords in a position to guard & attack [w/ bow & sword] buit not bear the brunt of the first wave. I obviously propose straight ahead. It is the quickest, (who knows what could happen in the 2-3 rounds it would take us to go around another way!), and Slidell's interest is now captured by the figure under the cart.

"Information," blurts Vesh as he pulls the Mage to the left of the alley for cover (to S12). "Can Veran tell you where the Goblins are?"

I think going up the alley could potentially put us between two groups of gobbos. I vote for all of us breaking left around the smaller SW building. Fighter bad-asses first, then Slidell and Vesh, then Malcolm (who I think is still down hp) who might have cover from the low fence around the table and could snipe from there. The other option might be to split our group, rounding both buildings to approach the cart from opposite sides, and trying to squeeze the gobbos between us. I don't know, I'm just thinking out loud, and I'm still buzzing from my kid's Halloween candy!

Sounds good to me. But rather than have Corran spend his action to aid another to Ehlissa... I'll just offer her my shield. I've still got a chain shirt on and haven't been hit yet, so that should be ok.

"Ehlissa, you may want this, since you are unarmoured." Corran unslings his shield and passes it to her, then takes a two-handed grip on his longsword. "The fight ahead might be chaotic, and you might need the shield to ward yourself. I'm still wearing my mail shirt, so I'll be protected as well."

Slidell contemplates Vesh's whispered suggestion.
"Hm. Yes. There are other entrances to this street, right around either of these buildings." He whispers back, indicating the buildings they are currently between.
"Let's see if we can find out where our would-be foes would be!"

He narrows his eyes and seems to concentrate. A few moments later, Veran comes winging down, unusually silent for the noisy raven. After a quick exchange of whispers, Slidell turns back to Vesh and the others and says softly, "OK, Here's what Veran saw,..."

Sli concentrates on his empathic link in a pre-arranged signal which means 'return, quietly' Veran then tells him what he saw.

Veran sees a LOT

Why can't I roll like that for my to hit rolls?!?!

This should let us (QUICKLY) decide which way we want to run in. Sli is a BIG proponent of NOT becoming the filling of a goblin oreo cookie. Now, if we decide to make the Goblins the filling of an adventurer oreo, that's ok. If they are concentrated on one end of the street, I vote for going behind them. But I recommend we stick together to cover each other if needed. Those last lil' buggers were ROUGH!

Let's wait half-a-second and learn what Veran sees.

I am willing to do Malcolm's rolls this combat, but I don't see his current hp on his sheet (I may not be looking closely enough). Also, if Arctaris sees this, could you give me some general notion of how you'd like Malcolm piloted during this combat? Will he close to melee, or would he hand back a snipe with the crossbow? How much will he stick his neck out, here? Is he willing to die for these relative strangers, or would he cut his losses and run if things started to look bad?

Here is the MAP. G= goblin (pelting horse with rocks); C = goblin champion (advancing on man with 2 knives); W = goblin's wolf (ripping throat of dying dog); D = dog (dying); M = man (cowering); H = horse (pelted)

The goblins' initiatives are 12 for the typical goblins and the wolf and 11 for the goblin champion

So:

Malcolm
Ehlissa
Corran
Vesh (delayed)
Goblins
Wolf (tie)
Champion
Slidell
Civilians (man, horse, dead dog)

Note: none of you can see the goblins. This is all based on info from Veran relayed by Slidell in general terms, so please RP your moves accordingly and we can be underway :)

"We need to go 'round this way!" Vesh nods in the direction of the corner of the smaller (T-10) building as he says this. "Not straight up the alley."

"You both go, and I'll cover." He continues as he knocks an arrow.

In game terms, I'm waiting to move until after Ehlissa's and Corran's initiative count. Once they go, I'll try to stay wide of them so I can shoot at whatever is in front.

Female Human (Chelaxian) Knight 1/Fighter 1/Paladin 1 (2)

my thoughts are that 2 or more of us need to get to the goblin champion and flank him. Ehlissa would be torn between helping the horse or the man. :D She'll go for the man first. Move to S8... let them come to us.

Ehlissa nods at Vesh's advice (much better than her fool-hardy assault down the main alley-way she realises to her chagrin) and goes round the side of the left-most building to attack the champion and his wolf that way. Once she sees the despicable pair, she cries to the champion, "Coward!"

I begin to climb up the wall of the nearest building but make very little progress, being much more familiar with climbing the ropes of a ship than the wall of a house.

After Corran's actions...

Vesh moves to the corner of the house and peeks around it. Seeing the wolf and the goblin champion, he draws his bow waiting for either to charge.

Hoping to sneak attack, Vesh trys to remain out of view (Stealth +6 = 11). He uses ready action to wait until either the goblin or the wolf charge, the trigger being when either are 30 feet away (and, thus, in ranged sneak attack/point blank range).

I'll put my attack/damage rolls here if necessary, against either the wolf or champion, whoever goes first (assuming that either charge).

Attack hits 17; Damage = 5 ~ Sneak damage, if applicable = 4

EDIT: I can't tell from the map, but it looks like the wolf is just beyond 30ft. if Vesh is at T-10. If this is not the case, and wolfy's in range, then Vesh just plugs the bugger on his initiative count w/o all the rigmarole of the readied action.

From T10, the wolf is more than 30' away. Do you want to ready an attack or attack now? If you attack now, you won't get the sneak bonus because you are too far away, but Ehlissa and Corran would still be able to move and block for you before it attacked. Also, on your attack roll: did you include +1 for bless; did you include +2 for hiding?

EDIT:I don't think you can normally sneak attack the wolf from cover anyway b/c of its scent ability. From the SRD: A creature with the scent ability can detect an invisible creature as it would a visible one. However, since you would be interupting its movement with your attack and it cannot smell you from its starting position, I'm going to rule that if it charges, it gets a +2 to its Perception skill to defeat your Stealth roll and let the dice decide. If it does not charge, it can detect you as it moves and react accordingly. Of course, you can shoot it simultaneously.

Decisions, decisions. The attack modifier is as follows: +2 for DEX, +1 PB Range, +1 Bless = +4. I didn't realize that I got +2 for hiding; I thought that was strictly for invisibility. The raw die roll was 13. Hasn't Ehlissa already posted her move? Is she blocking me from where she stands in S8? I'm willing to drop one on the initiative count for 4 more points of damage if I can do so without plugging Corran. Hint, hint, Corran ;)

EDIT-TO-YOUR-EDIT: Let's just go with that, then. If Corran or Ehlissa get in my LOF, I'm gonna fletch their asses!

Might not be able to post until evening. Good luck with the gobbos!

Female Human (Shoanti) Druid 3, Sorcerer 1 6,000 XP

I realize that I am off camera at present - JSL. would you like me to sit out this encounter, or come running in (Perhaps in a round or two)? I ask because a champion sounds bad...

Male Human Wizard 2/Sor 1

It WOULD pretty movie/dramatic for us to be in trouble, and Veren come leaping over a fallen comrade to tackle the goblin about to deliver the killing stroke. Followed by Naelah, natch. :)

Haha, yeah. It would, at that.

In other news, can someone tell me which spells I have used so far? So far as I can tell, I've used Produce Flame and I've also used Cure Light Wounds (and thus one use of my spontaneous healer feat). Is that all? Just checking.

EDIT: Also, what was the XP reward for that last encounter? Has that been awarded yet?

We are +300 XP for the battle Naelah.

I think that's all of the spells you've used.
Welcome back Psi :)

You are at least a round away and at 4 hp (reduced to 2 and then healed for 2 by F. Zantus) Veren has taken 1 pt of damage. You are out of first level spells.

If you want to "escape" the cathedral and come charging in, that is fine. Just roll initiative and move onto the map in the next round.

All: 130 XP for the second group of goblins.

I think Corran is up, then the gobbos and Vesh's readied action (if applicable)

You can say that again! I said it in the D-Forum, but I'll say it again: welcome back, PsionicFox! I tried to do Naelah justice while you were gone, but the book is always better than the movie, as they say.

Male Human Ranger 1

Corran rushes around the corner of the building, his blade in a 2 handed grip. "Goblin scum! Try facing someone armed!"

Corran double moves to S5, which should leave a shooting lane between himself and Ehlissa, as well as being far enough "wide" that the wolf just doesn't go wide himself around the front-line and start munching on our archer types.
