Does anyone know how exactly the whole magazine thing will work?
I've seen speculation that PDF compilations will be available at the end of the month, but is that an official statement from WotC?
If a PDF compilation is available, what about PDFs of the individual articles for those of us who don't want to pay for content that includes something we aren't interested in?
I wanted to ask these questions on the WotC boards, but I wasn't sure I'd get an answer.

You may not have to. As I understand, WotC will be releasing individual articles throughout the month and then will wrap everything up into a .pdf mag at the end of the month.
Of course, if this is the case, WotC should probably be releasing two articles a week if it wants to keep up the quality of Dragon.
And I've yet to see anything for Dungeon just yet.

The format is what annoys me.
I'm getting Wolfgang's Kobold Quarterly and it's a nice .pdf magazine. I don't want to have to download each article - put 'em together and give me a magazine.
The first "Dragon" article is available...

Yeah, I heard they would be doing that, but I don't like this piecemeal stuff.
However, this is a short term problem, as once 3.5 articles are gone from it, so am I....
(Or when they start charging for it - whichever comes first.)
So, yeah, I'm complaining about free stuff. (I'll shut up now.)

WotC wrote:For thirty-three years, the D&D game has led the fantasy hobby gaming scene, and 4th Edition is taking the game in places its creators never dreamed.
I want to believe in 4th edition, I do. I am even excited by some of things I have read now that more information has leaked out. I keep praying that the game I love is in the hands of competent business people that won't squeeze it and kill it, that won't ruin what is good in an attempt to get something great.
And then I read this quote... *sigh* Unintentional I am sure, but hardly something that inspires confidence.

Well, it looks like they have another Digital Dragon article up on WotC's site. This one is a series of pieces by the 4E designers reminiscing about their history with the game, from when they started, all the way up through today.
Personally, I don't really care for articles like that. I prefer stuff I can use in the game.

I just wanted to say that the new "Dragon" is complete garbage, and "Dungeon" isn't much better. If I printed out the articles, and threw them in the trash, I would feel like I was sullying the trashcan. It is frustrating and disheartening to see the magazines treated in such a horrible fashion.

Yeah, I'm pretty disappointed too. I was wondering why when I read an entry by James Jacobs on his blog about the layout for Lost Caverns - and his entry was spot on. The layout, down to fonts and everything, is almost identical to the pre-paizo layout. It felt like a step backward instead of forward.
I'm with Wolfgang on this one... Kobold Quarterly is top notch. I wrote a review for issue 2, I'm afraid it's the only review at present, but it'll tell you what *I* at least think of it.

PS - also, GameMastery Modules rock if you aren't able to shell out the cash regularly for Pathfinder.

So far I have not seen anything I call Dragon or Dungeon magazine.
Everything they have put up so far is just like what they put up before they murdered the magazines. The formatting, content everything seems the same. For free stuff it ain't bad. But let's face it, it sure isn't worth paying money for.
If Dragon and DUngeon under Paizo was rated 9 out 10 (room to grow on you know0, I would rate the current WOTC content as a 2. Honestly, the magazines were better during 1st edition and I could probably mine those for better information.

Done and done, the quality of both is excellent. It would be nice to see Kobold Quarterly become Kobold Bi-Monthly. Heck, why stop there? I'd pay for Kobold Monthly.
But then after several successful years, you'd probably get bought out by some multinational conglomerate. To please the faceless bean counters in the accounting department, they would cancel Kobold Monthly, and go to an online subscription version called Kobold Digital Initiative that promises the same CRAZY COOL content that'll be SO AWESOME!!!!!!!!!*
Oh wait...someone's already used that schtick on a couple of other good magazines... ;)
Better stick with Kobold Quarterly.

So far, the quality of the new online Dungeon and Dragon has left me unimpressed. The only way I would subscribe to them and spend my hard-earned $$$ is if Blue were to read them in a sexy voice on those otherwise pointless podcasts Gamer Zero does.
I suppose that would be a totally different internet subscription service though...:)

I guess the .pdf compilations have been axed. I can't find them. Can anyone else?
I wonder if they didn't realize that people would be expecting the PDF compilation to have a better layout than just exporting the HTML page to PDF, so they are now scrambling madly to put together a more magazine-like layout for the compilations.
It wouldn't surprise me in the slightest, and it would explain why the compiled "issues" are late.

i already do both and I haven't been disappointed yet.
You guys are such fanboys :P
I just got accused of that over at the WotC boards, as did some others, because we suggested or acknowledged that KQ is doing a good job -- better than DI right now.
To add insult to injury (really, just insult to insult), I tried to conduct a sort of poll on satisfaction with the DI and got the thread shut down by a moderator. To be fair, it turns out polls are a violation of their terms of use, but someone got in a nice jab about the uselessness of what I was doing before the hammer fell.
Not only have I never seen such moderator involvement in a board, nor have I seen such a need for it. Whoa!
In hindsight, it's been great fun :)

I'd be amazed if any WotC produced digital magazine is even half as good as either Pathfinder or Kobold Quarterly.

Polls are not only a part of boards, they're nearly required to be called a board.
"Someone" being a WotC moderator perhaps? ;)

I asked for an Update on the WotC boards and a WotC Board Monitor pointed that post to me which is about a week old

I call them a complete waste. They are a waste of potential, a waste of time to read, and will soon be a waste of money when you subscribe to them.
So, when the DI tanks (and it WILL tank), how much of an effect will it have of WotC? I'm thinking it'll hurt them quite a bit. Maybe not bad enough for them to sell off D&D but badly enough that the big-wigs at Hasbro will take notice.

Paizo has got it right. By delivering both a "hard copy" and an electronic copy, you get the best of both worlds. Because I play a lot of internet games and the e-copy is great for cut and pastes. But the hard copy is grand for reading whenever I get the chance to read - toilet, lunch, before bed, etc.
Paizo has got it right. Oh, I already said that.
