This is after many of years of people getting through half of my last name before stalling at the end. They often try various ways of interpreting the "J" before giving up leaving my name mangled several times over. I have tried telling people how to say my name (and most of them remember), but it would be nice if I didn't have to correct people all of the time.

Has anyone else here had the problem of people constantly mispronouncing your name?

Beeeeeeeeeeler, not Bellllllllller. Sheesh. Why everyone sees fit to call us Beller is beyond me. It's not that complicated! Not to mention everywhere I go all I hear is Bueller....Bueller. I've never even watched the freaking movie people! Oiy, someone is getting a pencil in the eyeball next time (I have a lot of repressed anger ;) ).

The original german is Beohler (which looks like bowler to my eyes), so I can see why the Ellis Island folks decided to "Americanize" the spelling a bit, but it gets even more fun trying to explain to people that I'm of 100% Italian stock (father was adopted).

Surname: Lejnieks.

Enough said.

Liberty's Edge

First name Vladimir, i go by vlad

not brad
chad
glad
flad
thad
walt
wald
vald

and don't get me started on the permutations of the whole thing...

Scarab Sages

Thankfully, lots of folks can pronounce my name. The annoying part comes when older folk ask me how "Fitch" is doing....

yep; people butcher my name all the time; and mispell it even more add letter and capital and I am always like what? People here at work say it at least eight different ways; I gave up correcting them; it just isnt that hard; it doesnt even have any j, x, k, or stuff; no excuse so I intentionally butcher their names back.

Liberty's Edge

People think my name is Keith. Sometimes Pete or Steve. I don't even correct them anymore. I don't care.

Paizo Employee Director of Game Development

I get people either leaving the 'i' out or switching up the 'a' and the 'i'. I don't even see how people do that, but eh, whatever. Let's me know when telemarketers are around.

People spell my first and last names wrong all the time so now I spell them different on purpose -I think only my sister and partner actually know how they're really spelt! :)

Last name's Fuchko. Use your imagination.

Ugh... my poor mixed up identity.

1. As a wee lad, people frequently called me Mark. It didn't help that my cousin Mark and I hung out a lot. Since moving up to the Seattle area almost four years ago, I've been called Mark at least a dozen times, for the first time in more than two decades.

2. My full first name is spelled the Irish way, Micheal, not the standard Hebrew way. I've been called "Michelle" far too many times...

3. People love to add a mystery h to my surname, pronouncing it like the author of the Japanese constitution.

*sigh*

Hee hee. I've had teachers say my last name as "Rose". How they got that I have nooooo idea.

Pathfinder Adventure, Adventure Path Subscriber

Last name: Chittenden. No it does not beging with an 's' so stop saying it that way. ;)

My last name has been mangled mercilessly ("Courts" somehow becomes Cortez, Quarts, Quartz, Court...*sigh*), but not nearly as much has the hubby's. Andrade, pronounced ann-drah-dee, not Andretti, not Ann-drayd, not Andirade...

Oy!

Mine is always killed. It is Cicci.

Paizo Employee Director of Sales

My Last name is Eisele.

Not pronounced EE-sell,

Nor EEzlee,

Nor EYE-sell,

Nor any of the infinite other combinations or permutations that people have seen to come up with.

Any guesses as to how it is pronounced?

Spoiler:
EYES-lee. Exactly like the Isley Brothers. Weird, huh?

Everyone calls me "Kelly". :(

well, if you notice, my first name has a double "n." i havent figured out whether my mother had a stutter, or was on some really good drugs. it took me 3 years to get the army to believe that i had a double "n."

not that its hard to pronounce, i mostly go by "dj."

and i hate swamp coolers. my swamp cooler ate all my dungeons and dragons money this month.....sigh.

I have found that despite a straightforward pronounciation, Ashavan is constantly messed up.

I swear the government probably has me listed under eight or nine different spellings.

- Ashavan

Wait... so, you're...

Cos Eisele?

Like... Mos Eisley?

People have called me Carrie for as long as I could remember. Yet, the one thing they do the most? Spell my name wrong. It's Corrie, Cory, Kori, etc. NEVER Corey. Then I get flak that my name's spelling is the 'boy's' spelling. Bah!

The last name no one ever gets wrong. *sigh*

Yup. I do often go by "Cos", however it is pronounced "cause".

Unfortunately, the "Mos" in Mos Eisley is pronounced with a long "O" sound, like Mos Def. But the "Eisley" is pronounced exactly the same way. In fact, "Eisley" is one of the plethora of common misspellings my last name gets whenever someone tries to spell it.

Thats funny because the only complete stranger that got my last name right was, if I recall correctly, an ex-telemarketer.

Dark Archive

My name is Shaun. So far so good. Add to that the fact I live in, predominently french speaking, Montreal and well everything goes south.

One substitute teacher, way back when, was convinced my name was a typo and called me Charles all day long.

Not to mention no one spells my name right. It's always s.e.a.n or with a W? Neither it's with a U. Maybe that's why I got my name tattooed across my back.

Liberty's Edge

My name's Luke.

Pretty easy.

It's unbelievable the number of people who misremember my name as Matthew, Mark or John. Ah well, at least they've got a theme going.

Paizo Employee Chief Technical Officer

People keep calling me "Vince." And spelling it "Vick." (Usually not both from the same person...)

Liberty's Edge

My name's easy, but I never, never, never-ever nick it to 'Andy'...yet people constantly think it's OK, even after I tell them I prefer 'Andrew.'

I don't really cotton to "Jim" or "Jimmy". If someone seriously called me "Jimbo", I would probably either laugh in scorn or disgust or just stare for a long, long time. I've also been called "Keegs". Not a fan.

What if I call you Big Jeezy?

:D

EDIT: You know, for the mad street cred yo.

When I read your last name I always think of Kevin Keegan and lament my lack of football skills. But 'James' always makes me think of the uber brilliant band and dancing (long ago) in the student union bar with flowers in my long 90's shoegazer hair. :) So it balances out.

I got "T-Dog" once, followed by "T-Bone," then there was the guy when I was a LT who always called me "Turner & Hooch"...He always got the stares...and then one day he got the stairs... >:}

mwhhhaaaaaa-hahahahaha!

Chris West is a pretty safe name, or so you might think; some people try to pronounce it "Weest", though. I don't know why. *shrug*

I had never had many nicknames before I started work at my previous job - where it turns out pretty much no-one was ever called by their correct name.

To various people, Luke became Lucas, Luca, Skywalker, El, or Lulu ... *sigh*

I never had this sort of problem, but nobody wants to believe that my last name realy is Bloodgood.

I don't think I could sit through it, honestly, after a lifetime of hearing people deliberately massacre my name. I just cannot see this making it very far in my Netflix queue...

I've come to learn that Sebastian is too long of a name for people to deal with. Sooner or later, I get a nickname. I went by Sam when I was a kid, I call my son Ian (he is Sebastian Jr., because, in case you hadn't figured it out yet, I am exactly that kind of a$*&$$@). Currently I'm rocking Sea-Bass (or CBass if I want to be a gangsta).

I don't care much for Seb, but it's a natural evolution, so I deal.

I had a roomate in college that went for Bastian. That worked.

What irritates me is when it's spelled with an "o". It amazes me how much people make that mistake, even when they are doing something like responding to an email or a post here on the boards.

There was an attorney at my wife's firm named Sloane. Except Sloane was a man. Needless to say, Sloane did not have much love for FBDO.

Talk to Jason Bullman... Bhulman... Bulman... Bulmhan.... about this.

How does he pronounce it? :)

We should just retcon his name to Bullman. Or Bullmann to keep it German. :P

Heh. No, I would imagine not.

LOL! I have the same thing...I cannot, refuse to be called "Beth" or "Betsy" or "Betty". It fills me with rage. "Lizard" is fine - I like it (love it, really), Lizzie not so good, Elizabeth sounds like I'm in trouble, Liz. (Though I have been called Lilz as well. Fun! :D )

Liz, not Beth.

Grr. Rawr.

The hubby's got the same thing - some nicknames just do not fit certain people. (I call my friend Jimmy Jimbo all the time - it fits him. :P )

Growing up, I had several (not one, several) teachers pronounce my name "SEE-an."

Teachers.

I hate everybody. (present company excluded, of course...)

Silver Crusade

I get Huntley a lot...or Ugly, but either as a joke from a REALLY close friend or by someone I just met who says it like they want to make sure (why would you carry on that name?).

Yep. It's DeWitt. Not Dewitt, De Witt, deWitt, De Witte, DeWit or anything like that. Those are entirely different clans with more convicts than the DeWitt's. And there's an E in there. Not a U or O.

At least my new nameplate at work has the capital W. My old work, I had to white out little lines above the "w" to make it a "W".

And it was worse when Todd Devitt worked there...

Edit: Never work on a phone job. It only gets worse. "Yep, I'm Josh."

Or Bas? If you're a Skid Row fan.

My mother named me after a song from an old movie, my name, Lara, has never been pronounced correctly, I always get the classic, Laura, or on occasion, Layray. My hubby was the only one not family to get it right the first time, he says it's because he's a huge Superman fan.
