Play-by-Post Discussion

1 to 50 of 66 << first < prev | 1 | 2 | next > last >>

Male Impoverished Student 2/Amateur Chef 3

Hello all. This is the discussion thread for my upcoming play-by-post game. I'd like 5-6 players.
Several people have expressed an interest in joining a new PbP and I have a friend who's looking to join a PbP so here is the list of interested parties:
Hammith DM
Keno
Kruelaid
The Last Rogue
YeuxandI
friend
If any of the said people want the slot, please post here with a character concept promptly.
Character creation guidelines:
Use either the roll 4d6 or 28 point buy option. If you are rolling please use
Races: All core races are as written with the following exceptions:
Half-orcs receive 1 extra skill point at each level and a bonus
feat at first level.
Half-elves receive 1 extra skill point at each level and a
bonus feat in addition the gain a +1 bonus to any one ability
score.
I also allow the following races: Kenku (MMIII), Changelings,
Warforged, Umbragen (Dragon 330), Tieflings, Aasimar (without
the resistance to energy or spell-like ability) and Shifters.
Classes: I'll allow almost any class (unless it is overpowered). I
possess all of the Complete books (except for Psionics and
Champion) as well as the PHBII, Expaned Psionics Handbook and
Magic of Incarnum. I'm willing to consider a class out of a
book not on that list if you are willing to type the
pertinent information up for me and a good argument for it
being allowed can be presented.
I'll allow Flaws and Traits as well as the Bloodlines from UA (the Bloodlines only if a good argument can be given).
Please post a character concept here and then if it works please put the character sheet in the alias' profile.
Also, please find a song that fits your character, sort of a theme song. This will help me get a feel for the character.
There will be some basic firearms (I'll post the information by Sunday evening) and cannons.
I'll award XP for combat, roleplaying, and good plans.
This will start at 1st level.
We'll be using action points.
I have the first adventure mostly plotted out and after that I have a few ideas but where the campaign goes will be mostly determined by the player's actions.
Campaign setting: None. This will take place on the Silver Coast, in no particular world. It is a rougher colonial area of the Empire (yes the setting is loosley based on the Atlantic of the 15th-17th century, I have a recently realized passion for history).
More information to come, probably sometime on Sunday. My posting will be a little sketchy over the next two days.

Would a Pirates of the Carribean theme be about right for this campaign?

Male Impoverished Student 2/Amateur Chef 3

Yes that would be appropriate. I started planning this after becoming obsessed with the Celtic punk rock band 'Flogging Molly' so the entire planning of the campaign has been influenced by movies like the Pirates of the Carribean (the first one) and energetic celtic rock songs like 'Drunken Lullabies' and 'Queen Anne's Revenge'.

Cool. I'm considering throwing my hat in the ring simply because you want people to nominate a theme song for their characters. Cool idea.

So far I've got Drunkships of Lantern by The Mars Volta, Right in Two by Tool, and Blood Roses by Tori Amos...

Would it be an advantage to have a character who knew their way around a ship?

I guess what I'm getting at is, put me on the reserve list!

And, sorry to threadjack, but AWED, I'm waiting for your post in my game! /threadjack

Male-ish Dungeon Master Dungeon Master 5

I'm certainly interested, may take a while to whip up an exact background for my character but I'm rather sure I'll be playing a Changeling.

He'll either be a Swashbuckler that uses his natural abilities to get out of any scrapes or a Rogue that's pretty much a sea-faring con-artist. The song bit may take a while.

Male-ish Dungeon Master Dungeon Master 5

I've decided upon playing a Changeling Bard, goes by the name of Wick. He is more often known by a vast number of false names he takes to keep himself out of trouble.

Background
His mother an father were a pair of changelings that tried to settle down, and to live a life outside of that ordinarily seen by changelings. They settled down on a small farm far enough from civilization that 'accidents' with their natural ability to shift shapes would be easier to cover up. When Wick's mother gave birth to him, there were complications. Wick's father went against his better judgement and sought out a midwife. The midwife told the townsfolk of the changeling birth, and after a breif scuffle the newborn Wick and his parents were forced out of the area.

The family became traveling salesmen, venturing up and down the coasts to sell things. Shortly, Wick's mother gave birth to his sister, Kess. Despite their parent's guidance, Kess and Wick used their abilities to play elaborate pranks and confuse the people of the villages the family visited. The parents tried to school their children in honesty and other virtues, but their lessons were cut short during a terrible storm. Wick's parents died on that day, but he and Kess survived. After almost a week floating aboard the wreckage of their family ship, they were picked up by pirates.

While not the most honorable of people the pirates of the Brigand's Nest were not the horrible creatures of most ships. For the most part, they were traders and adventurers that only raided other pirates. Mostly merchant vessels were spared, and even those that weren't had the crew left alive and with enough provisions to get to the nearest port.

On board the ship, Wick met with his mentor for his next 10 years of life, Gredik Flange. Flange, a bard of little renown but quite a large array of talents, taught Wick most of what he knew. Kess and Wick traveled with the pirates and grew up mostly on the ship, helping to pay off a debt they felt was owed from their rescue. During a particularly daring raid against a larger pirate camp, Kess went missing. Not amongst the dead or the injured, Wick searched the small island for her, but could find no trace. He had been incredibly close to his sister, and after losing his parents had lost her as well. Overcome with a depression and lacking the will to continue with his Bardic training, Wick soon found new life, seeing his sister's unaltered face in a crowd in a small port city. Wick took his leave from the Brigand's Nest after that, leaving on good terms with them to search for his sister.

It has been almost a year, and Wick has lost track of his sister, but continues to search. He feels that deep in his gut, he knows she's safe, he just isn't exactly sure where.

Personality
While his history is somewhat depressing, Wick comes across as more of an arrogant prick than an emotional wreck. He's embraced the more deceptive side of his nature, and may multi-class into Rogue or Swashbuckler later on, depending on how things go and what the party may need more. Despite his bad sides, he's not really evil, and is pretty much nuetral aligned, with a maybe a dash of chaotic.

girly child Mostly human. ranger 3/ sorcerer 9

Oooh ooh! Can I play a half orc paladin of freedom? They're from UA but are basically paladins that are CG and get some different special abilities.

Actually, I don't know what I want to play. Gimme some time and I'll have a concept by tomorrow, the character by that evening.

I like the theme song idea. I've already got my wheels turning. This should be fun!

Male Impoverished Student 2/Amateur Chef 3

Hammith DM, I like what you've come up with so far. Wick should work fine.
YeuxandI, I have UA but I haven't looked at the PoF very closely, I'll look at it tonight (I'm posting from work and don;t have my books with me) and see if it is okay. Sometimes the UA stuff isn't that well designed.
So far the list of people to fill any slots that open up is:
Mothman
Awed
Some more info:
Posting Requirements: I want players to post at least once a day. If you'll not have access to the message boards for a while when we're playing let me know so I can NPC you if necassary.
Rules I don't play with: Encumbrance and XP penalties for multiclassed characters.
Also, ignore the half elf's +1 to one ability score, I was coying that from an older file and have since found the more up-to-date version of my race modifications.
I'll give more general information on the setting once I have my notes with me. I probably won't be able to post much on Sunday, due to my sister's birthday party.
EDIT: I just found the PoF on d20SRD and it'll work fine.

Male Impoverished Student 2/Amateur Chef 3

Some knowledge of seafaring can't hurt but is by no means necassary to the campaign.
Hammith, I'll be happy to incorporate Wick's quest into the adventure.

Male-ish Dungeon Master Dungeon Master 5

I'd be great to have the quest intertwined with the adventure, but if you have troubles fitting it in don't be too concerned about it.

Also, what would you like us to use if we choose to use the rolling method? Your text kind of stops abruptly when you say what to use.

P.S. Found a Song. From the Guilty Gear XX soundtrack "Suck A Sage", you can listen to it Here (IGN Link).

It's about half-way down the page, the Guilty Gear X2 version. Though really, pretty much anything from the Guilty Gear games would work.

No, your quest will work in quite well.
I'm sorry about the abrupt end to that part of the post. I don't know why I did that. If you're using the roll 4d6 method than please make your rolls on Invisible Castle and link the results to me here on this thread. Link to Invisible Castle coming soon.

Male-ish Dungeon Master Dungeon Master 5

4d6-> [5,5,2,1] = (13) -1 = 12
4d6-> [5,2,4,4] = (15) -2 = 13
4d6-> [3,6,6,3] = (18) -3 = 15
4d6-> [5,6,4,2] = (17) -2 = 15
4d6-> [6,5,4,2] = (17) -2 = 15
4d6-> [4,5,3,2] = (14) -2 = 12

I figured out the TakeHighest thing after I rolled up this set, but it still works this way, just requires math.

And now I figured out there's a "Roll stats" method. Blargh.

Alright, those look fine.

Female Wild Elf Barbarian 1

So, I'll have a background up later tonight. I'm still hammering out some details in my head and am about to get really busy with life stuff, so I won't be able to post it up here.

To give Arctaris a bit of info before I get my bio up, Valis is from a clan of wild elf barbarians devoted to the Whirling Fury, which is where she'd get training for the Righteous Fury feat (book of exalted deeds, may rage and cast spells/deal non lethal damage/some other things). If that feat isn't kosher, let me know and I'll pick another. She's eventually going to be a Champion of Gwynharwyf and maybe a Frenzied Berserker.

Looks okay, although I don't have the BoED so I would appreciate it if you posted the pertinent information for me before I give it the okay. I also view the Frenzied Berserker as unblanced and don't allow that class in my games. Other than that it looks fine. Once you get everything finished please either post it all in your alias' profile or email it to me at wraith6@raresteeds.com. Nice to have you in the game.

Yeux, I like your character idea (would fit in well to Savage Tide too!). You may be interested, Fatespinner is playing an elf barbarian in Aubrey’s Eberron pbp game, his character uses the Whirling Frenzy rage varient from Unearthed Arcana. This concept looks like it might go very well with your character too. If you want to check it out, try here.

Ooh, ooh, I want to join! Gimmie, gimmie! I don't know what I'll run so I will just talk to you about that on Tuesday. I'm on the list suckers!

Yes but you're third on the list.

Male Changeling Bard 1

Here's my Alias for the game. I've got most of the stuff for my character set up, mostly just need a feat. I'm gonna save that for a bit, see what would best compliment the rest of the party. Most likely going to be from Dodge, Extra Bardic Music, or Combat Casting.

Also, how much do we get for starting money?

Righteous Wrath: first melee attack while raging against an evil foe renders them shaken, Will DC (10 + 1/2 raging class level+ cha). AN enemy who makes this save is unaffected for the rest of the encounter. Foe is shaken until battle ends, or you are incapacitated/killed. Also, you maintain perfect clarity of mind while raging, allowing you to deal nonlethal damage, show mercy, and distinguish friend from foe.

Also, I've got a link up in my profile with her bio. I just need to get her statted up the rest of the way and she'll be good to go!

p.s. Thanks Mothman! I've just recently created her for STAP, actually. She's on of the PCs mothers and he's going to meet her again when they go to the Court of Stars. She had to give him up right after he was born to finish her own quest and then she meant to return to him...but things happened. Its going to be fun to play her.

Righteous Wrath looks fine.
Starting gold is 175gp for all characters.
Both characters look good so far. If the others from the original group that expressed intrest in a PbP don't post a concept here by next Friday I'll open p the slots to those on the waiting list (Mothman, AWED, Lord Hyrax).
Today I'm working on getting the backround info together and will hopefully post it tonight.
If you are set upon going for the Frenzied Berserker PrC then I'll try to modify it to make it suitable to this campaign (both flavor-wise and mechanically).
A question about Valisilwen; It would seem that she's relatively familiar with how the non-tribal civilization works correct? Or is she ignorant of normal civilization?

Arctaris,

Spoiler:
thinking of a character concept, are there likely to be any/many evil outsiders in this game? I'm thinking of a fiend slayer type character, but could change it...

Mothman

Spoiler:
Lets just say that certain aspects of the adventure will have a...fiendish undertone.

Oooo, Moth, you're a fan of both Tori Amos and Tool? Very cool, they're among my favourites as well...

Alright, I need to ask everyone who's playing's opinion on something. My FLGS just got the copy of the Eberron bore rulebook that I'd special ordered in (as well as my Critical Hit Deck, Yay!). The game either be set in a slightly modified Eberron or in my not-so fleshed out setting. Eberron will be slightly easier for me (and at the same time harder because I'm new to the setting) but I like the flavor of this setting (my homebrew) and Eberron more or less equally and would be fine with either. So, which would you all prefer? Eberron or the homebrew? Any protests against Eberron?
How do you feel about using the Critical Hit Deck (I would give you the option of a card or normal crit damage, chosen before you rolled the dice for damage or drew a card)?
BTW I'm hoping to get this game started by next Sunday or Monday.

No problem with either.

Male Changeling Bard 1

Eberron's a great setting, and if you're looking for swash-bucklery-ness than the Lhazzar Principalities are an awesome spot to have piratey adventures.

Either way, as long as it's still D&D it doesn't bother me that much.

Ok, so far it looks like Eberron unless someone has a problem with that they haven't voiced yet.

Female Wild Elf Barbarian 1

I've never played in Eberron but what I've seen of it looks cool. I think we've got the books somewhere, so I'll read up on it.

I need to edit my bio a little bit, since the last part was rushed as my workday ended and I left. It'll be finialized by about noon. She has a basic knowledge of non-tribal civillization but the BBEG didn't let her leave the estate unescorted, veiled, and re-charmed. She tried to run off a few times during exscursions (made her will save! :P) and that privledge was revoked.

Sorry about my absence, I took a trip and thought that I'd have internet access while away from home and as it turned out I didn't.
Okay, the game will be set in Eberron, probably in the Lhazhar area. Mothman and AWED, you're in. Please post a character concept and sheet ASAP. Still looking for one more player.

Something I feel the need to clarify; you need not all start out as pirates, (or even that moral compass, although I enjoy a campaign like that) nor will we even necassarily start out at sea (although we'll certainly get there, considering my love of the sailing ships of old). I just want to put that swashbukling feel that seems so perfect for Eberron into the campaign.
I'm going to start the campaign off in Sharn, hopefully by Monday if we can collect the rest of the players and their characters by then.

The Exchange

When this is opened out from the initially interested, I would like to throw my hat in the ring.

Cheers

You're in French Wolf. Please post a character concept for approval.

The Exchange

The Dragon article for the Umbragen (P.44) talks of clerics using the listing "for the Shadow" to determine their domains.

I'd like to know what these domains are before I go for that race and class. Can you help? (I do not possess ECS or any of the rest of those products yet)

Cheers

Ignore this please I'd like to shoot for something a bit less intense.

How about a half-orc cleric of luck and celerity. Need an Eberron God - a bit like Olidammara please.

Eberron is a setting I know little about but I should be able to lay my hands on the ECS in the next few weeks.

Cheers

Here is a wikipedia article on the religions of Eberron. I would suggest Olladra or the Traveler. Also in Eberron there isn't any proof of the existence of the gods other than sheer faith so you can be a cleric of an ideal, choose two domains and claim to represent a new god.

The Exchange

Thanks

I should be able to complete the draft profile by Monday now.

Cheers

Here he is in draft form.

Over to you, DM Actaris.

Hi all
sorry I haven't posted earlier, I've been so busy.
here's my character history-
Irulan was born in a small elven village in the middle of a large forest. She grew to hate large towns and big groups of people after spending most of her childhood playing by herself in the woods. After some Orcs rampaged on the elves land, Irulan became a pretector of thier forest along with other elves from thier village. She is quiet, but doesn't hesitate to seek revenge on anyone who destroyes elven lands. She is now a ranger under the influence of the wanderlust, and is looking for adventures that will take her to new places.

Alright, Dron looks fine. What domains do you have?
Irulan looks fine.
Hammith, you still need to finish you character.
I'm pretty sure Yeux's character is done.
Still awaiting characer's from Lord Hyrax, AWED and Mothman.
I think that AWED mentioned that he was going to Canada for a week sometime around now so we might have to start without him and introduce him later. Mothman is never around on the weekends so we might have to do the same thing with him as with AWED. We will start tomarrow and anyone who isn't ready will be introduced as they're ready (the first part of the campaign is mostly RP and it'll be easy to introduce people as we go).

Irulan wrote:

Just elven lands or any lands at all? We will be starting in a city (Sharn), BTW.

Hey Arctaris, didn’t want to get too far into my character, cos I wasn’t sure I’d be in the game… now that it seems I am, I have a few concepts, let me know what you think.

Spoiler:
Concept 1: A disgraced House Lysander Half Elf Rogue / Swashbuckler. Piratical tendencies, a daredevil, crazy and a bit of a drunkard. Theme Song: Drunkships of Lantern by the Mars Volta. He will take first level of rogue, then probably a level or two of swashbuckler (I don’t have the Complete Warrior, but I think I know all the details for the first two levels anyway).

Concept 2: A Half Orc Eldeen Gatekeeper Druid with the Shapechange special ability from PHB2. Theme song: Forty Six and 2 by Tool. But considering we now have a half orc cleric and a ranger, probably don’t need this guy…

Concept 3: A human ranger, with the backstory that he is sort of a reincarnation of a fallen angel, banished from heaven for crimes against mortals, and forced to be a mortal himself. Seeks to redeem himself by slaying demons. Will probably progress as Ranger4/ Cleric1/ Barbarian1/ Fiend Slayer (a PrC from an old issue of Dragon, I’ll post the details when I get a chance.) Themesong: Right in Two by Tool. But we already have a ranger, and I don’t know how fiend focused this game will be…

I also notice we’ve got no arcane caster, I could come up with a concept if you think we need one?

I also rolled my stats, 4d6, using the SRD Hypertext d20, got crazy good: 18, 17, 14, 13, 11, 8. But then I realised you wanted us to use Invisible Castle, so I can redo them or use point buy if you like.

Male Changeling Bard 1

Ok, Wick is, to my knowledge, done.

Anything more you need, or any suggestions, give me a yell.

Looks good, Wick.
Mothman

Spoiler:
Any of these concepts could work. There will be certain fiendish influences in the game, getting more prevalent in the higher levels. I know that Lord Hyrax is going to play a ranger (at least that's what he told me) and AWED might play an arcane caster. While having an arcane caster is always helpful I'm happy to adapt the adventures to the party.

In answer to your question, DM Actaris

Spoiler:
Dron Drox has Domains of Travel and Celerity. Will add them to profile.

Liberty's Edge

Male Mothman Expert 5

Ok, so far we have:
Changeling Bard
Elf Barbarian
Half Orc Cleric
Elf Ranger

One of the other potential players might be doing an arcane caster, I think I’ll go with a rogue of some type. I’ll post a more detailed character description later, but I’m thinking of a male half elf rogue, associated with House Lysander.
