Craft Blacksmith vs. Armorsmith vs. Weaponsmith

3.5/d20/OGL

I know what an armor/weaponsmith would craft...

What then would a Blacksmith craft? Could he also craft arms and armor? I would think not when the crafts are so specific... but then what?

He's too advanced... he can make weapons...

thanks for all your help... i guess I'll leave the blacksmithing to the npc's.

Of course, you could allow a blacksmith to make any simple weapon like a mace, morning star (though this one's stretching it), or spear. That still leaves the martial and exotic weapons for weaponsmiths, but gives the blacksmith something else to make other than horseshoes and fence railings.

How 'bout an Aerosmith?

In my campaign

Weaponsmiths craft Weapons (and simple cutting tools)
Armorsmiths craft Armor and Shields (metal or non-metal)

Blacksmiths craft almost everything that is almost entirely
built to be purely functional and made of metal
Tools, Gates, Hinges, Horseshoes, Nails, etc.

An exception is delicate materials
Locksmith (craft Locks & Keys)
Jewler crafts rings, necklaces, etc

and Finally the skill _Craft: Finery_ for
fancy dinnerware, candelabras, or other 'soft' metal objects
that are more aesthetically pleasing.

Of course - in my campaign there are only 29 craft skills
each of which falls into one of six categories:
(Metals, Stone, Wood, Sundries, Fabrics, and Precision)

Wouldn't blacksmithing allow you to build a forge?

Blacksmiths also repair the broken metal parts of wagons and plows.

IIRC Craft (blacksmith) can be used to make armor and weapons with a +5 to the normal armor or weapon DC.
