Gleemax

Liberty's Edge

has anyone checked out the Gleemax stuff on the WOTC site?

Looks to be the beginnings of the DI....not sure what I think
yet ,but it doesn't seem to be too earth shatteringly impressive...

IF this is the DI, then it's laughable.

Gleemax is an alien STD. You don't wanna catch it.

Let me clarify--if this kind of thing is supposed to appeal to the "new generation" of "hip and tech savvy" gamers, then fine. Take your fancy, irritating website with the cool terminology and run with it.

I'll stick to my dining room table. I opened the website and the colors immediately annoyed me to the point that I didn't even want to delve any further.

brap!!!

Howabout a pet dog on the computer like in Japan? With a FREAKIN' laser on his head.

Unless I blinked and missed it, there didn't seem to be much about the actual content.

And in reference to its forum boards, "Minions Speak", who wants to be called a "Minion"? It might be thought tongue-in-cheek, but it does seem a bit dismissive of others' opinions, doesn't it?

Liberty's Edge

And people say the word games are stupid.

Have you seen the ICv2 interview?

I have now; thanks for the link. It might be a good idea- certainly the part about a way for former gamers to return to and get new blood into the hobby is a good idea, but as to the rest, we'll just have to wait and see. I'm not really interested in the online-gaming aspect though, or the board games or videogames aspects, either.

I just did. The interview is pretty complete and it gives a good insight of what they want to do.

Then again, in part 2 of the interview Buehler mentions that the anouncement concerning D&D is yet to come...

Vic, is Paizo considering itself a competitor to that ''brain in a jar''? Buehler seems to consider that the ''brain in a jar'' is pretty much alone in is category.

Interesting. It at least shows that they have some kind of plan regarding every other aspect of their business...except for D&D. That doesn't exactly leave me with a warm and fuzzy.

I visited that Gleemax site. In my opinion...blah!

Underwhelmed.

My general impression was (censored).

In light of this and all the other crap floating around the 'net about WotC's Online Initiative, I get the distinct impression they're thinking about pretty much scrapping the whole tabletop pencil-and-paper style of roleplaying games altogether.

I certainly understand this in terms of business. If it works as well as I think it will, it's a brilliant move.

In terms of my favorite hobby, though, I think it sucks. Good thing I never throw away roleplaying materials. Good thing, too, that ebay will be around to help me find the things I don't own yet.

Not really. Though it we might have a handful of things in common on our to-do lists, their primary direction and overall goals seem pretty different from ours, and their revenue model is certainly very different. And while there's some overlap in the audience we're both trying to attract, I'm not sure that's a problem for either of us. Besides, if they actually are able to bring new people into the gaming hobby, that's obviously good for the industry, and that's good for Paizo.

I went there and wow I am so confused at what it is?
I am going to go cuddle up with my players handbook, something I can understand.....
Comfy soft paper

Thirty minutes later
read the forums over at wizards.....
Gleemax....sounds like myspace for gamers..... From that junk the DI is going to be spawned from....

Just shot my F***en dog and get it over with. I am tired of watching it being slowly beaten to death.

From what I read, if I understand correctly, Gleemax isn't the digital initiative, its part of the digital initiative. The D&D aspect is going to be different from this. This aspect of the DI is more along the lines of catching the attention of the "strategic game" players, i.e. people that play the card games, the Avalon Hill games, and the minis side of Star Wars and D&D. This side of the DI is less geared toward role playing and the like and more toward "competitive" gaming.

And as they mention in the interveiw, most of us aren't their target audience with this. They want to catch the attention of the MySpace generation, but from what they said, they don't want to radically alter their marketing for the "aging" portion of the audience, just add this in addition to it.

I'm interested to see what comes next. I will say they got the "its not marketed to me" part of it so far.

I don't get it - the theme seems more sc-fi than D&D. Plus, it's basically just a message board (like they already have) with a different skin (puke green, at that... hmmmm kids will love that?)

I'll look again when it's actually got some D&D content. *sigh*

Gleemax most likely won't have D&D content . . . its one part of the DI, the part that is suppose to cater to "strategy games," i.e. not roleplaying games. I could be off, but in the interview they definately seemed to be saying that the D&D side would be a separate animal all together.

Grand Lodge

What a terrible name...Gleemax. It's supposed to be some mind controlling brain with the word "Glee" in its name. should have been "Lame-Max".

From what I read Gleemax is going to be part of the DI for DnD, just as it is going to be part of the DI for Magic and everything else.
Yeah things I wont use.

Liberty's Edge

If they ever fix the color scheme I'll give it a chance. Until then, if I can't view the site for more than a minute without eyestrain I'm not going to try.

It could be, I can't claim to know anything at this point. I was just going by this interview here:

Gleemax Interview

Specifically this passage:

Will the online initiatives that are replacing the print magazines be part of Gleemax?

Not directly. We have a lot of really good ideas that I'm aware of, but we're not ready to talk about them yet. I can clarify a little bit about the relationship between Gleemax and D&D and Magic. In 6 months, 12 months, people will look at WotC as having three big brands, we've got Magic, D&D, and we've got Gleemax. Gleemax is its own separate brand; it's a product created by Wizards of the Coast. It's a little different in that this product supports the Magic player and the D&D player and it's full of a bunch of features and tools sets that support gamers of all shapes and sizes, but it is its own brand and its own product produced by Wizards of the Coast. That's the relationship. D&D will still have its own web presence, D&D will still do its own thing, but there will be a lot of cross references with Gleemax. We'll be trying to drive Gleemax customers over to the D&D Website, and we'll be trying to drive D&D players over to the Gleemax Website, but they're not the same thing--they are distinct initiatives.

Liberty's Edge

Did they have the strobe lights before?

Been there twice now, have yet to see content of any appreciable kind. Unfortunately, it appears to be afflicted with the same wasting disease WoTC suffers from: failure to take advantage of open licensing. Closed content is dead. I'd be all over purchasing the splatbooks if I thought I could ever reuse the content, but, since I'm the only one in my gaming group that will ever have a copy of the stats, etc..., why bother? Sure, at least now they could all visit the website and see the content for themselves, but no one could rehash it into another project or create something superior without sanction.

Whats DI??

Liberty's Edge

DI is Wizard's "digital initiative." Dragon and Dungeon Magazines' licenses have been pulled from Paizo, in contemplation of Wizards offering something similar online at their site.
Online content, pdf's, whatnot; I'm not sure anyone has said for sure what exact form the "digital initiative" will take.

Digital Initiative. The WoTC surrogate for Dragon / Dungeon. Supposedly.

Nope.

I'm 15. I don't get it and I think it's the stupidest thing ever.

Apparently Wizards has once again made a mistake in figuring out how to reach out and please their target audience. Cuz you know that all us 15-year olds like glowing green brains.

All those people at my school were totally bringing glowing green brains with us to school. We were totally showing them off. We were like giving them names and trading them and s#+@.

RPG Superstar 2009 Top 8

I'm just suprised that they managed to get the 1,000,000 mana to summon Gleemax.

And that a little green and black could so injure me.

I have to admit, the "free joining" of paid games, and the arcade styled pay structre are actually decent ideas. While people may mock it, back in the day, people used to pay quarters to play a game only once. Just wish the webpage wasn't so ugly.

See, for me 15 was twenty years ago. I don't know what you young uns are thinking these days. Glad to see you are not being suckered in by Weasels of the Coast.

Don't let the Gleemax get you young Slasher! Fight it! Fiiiggggghhhhttttt!!!!

I'm puzzled by why Gleemax even exists. Or if it exists? I've been unable to successfully learn anything substantial from the proto-site Wizards has up. It's very vague, and there's no real need for it.

If it is indeed designed to be a site devoted to catering to the Magic and D&D fan, why? Wizards has good sections of their site that already address these issues. Why complicate things with a superfluous add-on? This sounds like the Sega 32X, or Crystal Pepsi. Why bother?

Maybe they should do less psychographing and just ask the youth. Here are two, just like the grownup (I hate being called that still), that do not like green brain minions.
