I wanted to get clarification on something. If I want characters to make a dexterity check to avoid slipping and falling on a slipperty surface....and they make their roll...are they trying to roll under their dexterity?
There is a skill called "balance", you would roll a check according to the chart in the SRD HERE, using the modifiers provided according to your circumstances and they would roll a d20, and their balance modifier to the roll and try to beat the DC you come up with from the chart.
You usually don't roll straight ability checks anymore. There is usually a skill to cover an action.FH

Yes, to do it this way you would have them try to roll under their dexterity on a d20. That way characters with a higher dexterity have a better chance than those with a lower one. However, if you are playing 3.0/3.5 a balance skill check might be more appropriate. of course you may have a reason that you don't want to use balance, and if thats the case, ignore my last bit.
*edit* oops others beat me to it, darn quick posters with their speeding through my internet, cut your hair hippies.
