Oh no . . . I just realized something. If my wife were to get pregnant right now, that would mean that our child and 4e would be born at the same time . . . .

LoL!

Well, if you do have a kid right as fourth edition comes out you could name him...
Vier (German for "four")
Shin (Japanese for "four") (and "death")
Yon (the other Japanese word for "four" that isn't a homonym of "death")
Quatro, Quattre, etc. (the Romance languages)
Chitire (Russian; pronounced chee tier ee IIRC)
Fire (Norwegian; I guess it's probably pronounced fir eh or fear eh)

We say "Shi" for 4, not "Shin".

And "Yon" is something called onyomi (of the same kanji), used only in combination with other words or occasionally when counting.
Just wanted to clear that up.

I stand corrected. Thank you so much for the clarification! :D

Oh boy, a Japanese lesson! :)

My pleasure!

I'm American-born, but I've lived in Japan and one of my degrees is in Japanese, so I'm quite fluent; feel free to ask if you have any Japanese or Japan-related questions.

Just don't ask me about ninjas. ;P

Did you study Japanese at one point?

Ya know . . . counting in Japanese isn't all that hard. Back when I was a kid taking karate lessons (acheived a brown belt before we moved to a different state, now, my waist has taken on a gamer gut and karate just is impossible) I learned to count to ten. Then after a couple years, I heard a japanese guy counting and I I was suprized I actually was able to understand what number he was on even though he was well over ten.

Part of me wants to be fluent in Japanese, but there is a larger part of me that laughs because it knows I'm to lazy to learn any other languages. (Yeah, even spanish . . . but that's a different topic.)

Takamori wrote:

Studying, in the present tense, would be more accurate. Once I save up a bit of money I plan on taking a Japanese class at a community college, but until then it's all self-study.

William Pall wrote:

I too have that desire and that problem, although my desire to learn to read Japanese usually outweighs my laziness. ;D

Dieties; sure we have the names now and the domains, but that is not enough meat to help me play a cleric or paladin. Need some holy days; some festivals, some legendary heroes of the faith, some dogma and catsma :)

Well if that's the case, they need to put out a Pathfinder Campaign Setting and soon... oh wait, they are.. kinda. :)

Hopefully, sometime between now and PF#2's shipment, we'll get a nice little teaser on the blog . . .

(Yeah....there was absolutely no subtlety in that.)

Holy symbols for the deities.

I've seen that more will probably come out with the Curse AP, and I realize that designing holy symbols is far harder than it sounds.

If we could get a *preliminary* _Description_ of them, I would be most grateful. (Promise we won't hold you to them!)

I never got into adventures (as in Dungeon) as much as I got into Dragon, because I am typically a player. However, with the Age of Worms and Savage Tide, I was drawn in to purchasing. The NPCs and flavor behind the adventure made them worth reading, even if I wasn't going to get a chance to run or play through them.

My question is this: Is Pathfinder going to be providing similar story/flavor/background as the Dungeon APs for their adventures? I guess I'm unsure as to whether or not the adventures are going to be a good buy for someone who probably isn't going to be playing/running them. (That sounds so stupid, I know, but given what I got the past few months in Dungeon, I figured it's worth asking) Is Pathfinder just adventures, or is it going to introduce me to a world? And if so, how connected to the main DnD world will this one be? Will it have Demogorgon and Malcanthet and etc? Will it lack yugoloths because they aren't SRD? Will it have yugoloths but call them daemons because they aren't SRD?

Hopefully, Friday's blog post will have a list of all the holy symbol descriptions. We can't afford to illustrate them all yet, but we can certainly afford to describe them all.

Pathfinder will be 1/2 adventure, 1/2 world-building articles, so yeah, it will indeed introduce you to a world. We can't use any of the names that aren't in the SRD or aren't from real-world myth. SO: We can't use Malcanthet, but we can use Demogorgon (at least in some way) since Demogorgon existed as the name of a demon or evil spirit before D&D. Yugoloths are part of the SRD so we can't use them, but we can certainly use Neutral Evil fiends (many of which, thanks to the tome of horrors and othe d20 products, ARE open content).

Kain Darkwind wrote:

After reading the first installment of Pathfinder, I would say that no, there isn't similar story/flavor/background/content. I think the quality of the work in Pathfinder far surpasses that when was in Dungeon. Everything that Paizo did with Dungeon and Dragon still had to be sent to WotC for approval. With Pathfinder, the final say of what gets the green light is completely in-house. Less time dealing with red tape means more time working on content.
Kain Darkwind wrote:

Oh definately, even if you don't use the scenerio (or even parts of it) the in depth detail provided for the setting is fantastic, the npc's and locations are great.
Kain Darkwind wrote:

As much or as little as you want to have it be connected. There will be certain things that Paizo will be restricted in doing due to the OGL, the fact that once you have it in your hands you can throw in as many copy-righted creatures as you want.
Kain Darkwind wrote:

For what it's worth, I plan to have them in my Golarion . . . right after I file off their serial numbers. But don't worry, Malcanthet likes that sorta thing.

Donnald...you should play Paranoia if you like forms. In no other game will you be in a situation where you must concur/nonconcur and then sign on your own Execution Voucher. Cheers.

If what you mean by this question is “what do we want to read about in the back of each PF installment”, the obvious answer is: develop your world and reveal what we need to know as it comes up. I've read several “how to” guides regarding world-building, and the common theme of them all was START SMALL. So, no, I don't need a bunch of info on nearby countries; continents; ocean currents; foreign affairs; ecology of the south pole; history of famous dragon's from some desert on the far side of the planet; etc.

Assuming this question is intended to be in the context of “what do we want to hear about on this message board” I'll answer in a (hopefully) more useful fashion. Deities. Nobody is going to want to play a cleric unless there is some kind of dogma or something of some sort to grasp onto. Parties need clerics, clerics need deities; a simple calculus. Choosing a deity involves a lot more than a combination of available domains. The first order of business should be deities from which my players can choose, so local one's commonly worshiped in the Sandpoint region should be first priority. I can probably wait to hear about the rest of them over time. I dig that you are going to do a write-up on Desna in PF2, but what if Desna doesn't appeal to a PC who wants to play a cleric? I'd like to get started running PF asap and I don't want to have to wait until sometime around PF8 when you've had enough time to do a full write-up of each pertinent deity. I appreciate the short paragraphs in the player's guide, but I'm eager for more. The old adage is true: you've given and inch and I want a mile. But I'd settle for a few yards.

I love you guys!

The descriptions are great! I even drew a couple of them in class almost decently even with my horrendous drawing skills.

Woot!

Wow you guys are responsive: calendars, celestial bodies and now holy symbol descriptions! My wish for their future drawings would be to see a few as they appear in the world - carved into a stone shrine, or emblazoned on a tattered shield - rather than the typically detailed and cartoonish glyph floating on the page. The holy symbol Kyra carries is a perfect example of what I mean. Spectacular effort as usual, guys!

Cheers

Let me start off by saying that I really hope that this new world your putting together is everything that Eberron is not. I'm not saying that Eberron is a bad campaign world, its just not the campaign world for me. I would rather play or read about any of the older TSR settings over the Eberron setting. To be fare I gave Eberron a fair chance to impress me, I bought many of the novels and most of the RPG books but after over a year of trying really hard to get interested in Eberron, I finally gave up.
What I would like to see is a new world that has all the key elements of a Campaign world like Greyhawk. There needs to be gods and many of them. In time all the gods and their faiths should be well detailed, like in the Core Beliefs articles from Dragon.
There needs to be many different races and each race should have their history, perspectives, and outlooks detailed.
There needs to be an atlas that exposes the world, not just a conteinant.
This world should have mysteries that are revealed in time, and maybe some that are never revealed.
There needs to been an interesting planar system surrounding this world and the planar system should NOT be considered a seperate campaign setting.
This world should have magic. Magic that comes in different types and styles but not so many that it becomes cumbersome. And that same magic should range from the simple to the castastrophic.
This world should be an old world fantasy setting. Never should their be trains and other modern world luxuries. A flying ship should be rare and wonderous, not a common form of mass transit.
Also there should be unique and powerful beings that exsist beyond the material plane who come in various alignments and are structued in some way. Not unlike the Demon Princes or Celestial Paragons of D&D.

Well, I guess I'm voting for just about everything.

I'd love to see a full sized book on the Pathfinder setting (maybe a poster sized map too).

The Cheliax-Andoran-Taldor beltline.

The Greco-Roman flavor with Taldor locked in millenia old hubris...Cheliax's devil-using ways (and don't think that doesn't go both ways...i.e. who is using who) and Andoran, trying to eke out a Republic between the two. Its an area rife for political intrigue, war, monstrous invasion/incursion, Darkmoon Vale...too many goodies to list.

Nope. Not really. She might end up looking a bit like one, though, but she's a lot nicer than a succubus. Not NICE, necessarily, but not evil. But she'll certainly be up to Malcanthet-level manipulation of events behind the scenes.

Not currently interested in continents and places far from the locations in the adventure paths.

Im most interested in gettign all in info on the gods. If a player wants to choose to be a cleric I'd rather not tell him that these gods are really fleshed out and these gods I pretty much know their domains and favored weapons.

So the gods are a priority for me.

Im also REALLY interested in the cosmology.

Maps: I would like to see four A1 size Setting Maps like Dragon Magazine did for Forgotton Realms a few years back. Something with such quality and scale I could place my own little village of Midden on some isolated stretch of river...just up from a capital.

I have three things that I would really like to learn more about.

1, The World of Pathfinder fascinates me, not least because I feel like I’ve kind of discovered it on the ground floor of development. Each issue of Pathfinder reveals more of it to me and I find that really exciting.

2, The Adventures are great. I am really looking forward to DMing RotRL for my friends. I also love what is coming up in the other Adventure Paths.

3, Ways that I can contribute. I would like to know if there is a way that I can submit articles or little things like magic items, outside of the Superstar competition, for possible inclusion in future Pathfinders. Monsters have been mentioned, how about monsters that are in the SRD, but have my own twist to them? I’m not sure I can make new stuff up, but I love combining my knowledge of myths and legends with creatures that are in the MM. How about simply submitting an NPC with a short story behind them and where they might fit in?

How about more on the economic side of things (even some basic info would be helpful)...The Farming District from the Skinsaw Murders has about 64 Acres (1/2 of which is likely available for grain crop).

That means about 6 tons of Wheat grain in produce (5 tons in surplus).

Basically the PCs decided to manipulate the regional economy (Create shortages and starve out a few towns) - making the region vulnerable to their own machinations.

Well, its still close to no one, but I also would dig economic info... Dune Trader for Dark Sun was one of my favorite accessories for the setting. The PCs being the founders of a new trading coster is a fantastic leap-off to boat-loads of adventuring fun.

.... The careful mapping of trade routes, the thrill of double-book ledger entries, the rage at having to beat a gelugon over the head with said ledger after devilish machinations destroy your contracts & records....

I like GameMastery Adventure Modules. I thought they were some of the best for D&D3.5. Now they are going to be part of the Pathfinder brand. This is great. So I can look forward to seeing those mods continue to come along. I'm also looking forward to the actual Pathfinder RPG handbook ,as about that time my worn old PHB may be through.
So my question is going to be; how hard would it be to divest the Pathfinder setting from the Pathfinder RPG?
Thus far, the GameMastery modules have not been hard at all to use in different settings.

The Pathfinder RPG, as far as we're thinking right now, will be setting neutral with one small caveat. Because we need to allow for clerics to worship someone, we're going to include our gods as default gods for clerics.

Let me reiterate, though, that this is what we're thinking right now. A LOT can change between now and August, 2009. :)
