Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser Trade Paperback

Comics

This was recompiled and re-released recently and I'm curious if anyone on the boards has read it. I plan on taking a look tomorrow or Thursday on my usual foray into the comic store, but I haven't read the original stories, so I'm not sure how well I can look at it objectively.

Mike Mignola is my absolute favorite comic book artist, though, and I'm eager to see not only this but his Corum: The Coming of Chaos adaptation from several years ago if I can track it down.

Scarab Sages

I picked it up, but haven't read through it yet. I did flip through it, and it looks awesome. I'm also a Mignola fan, he used to do great work on Wolverine.

Got it today. Damn good and definitely worth picking up. You can see where Mignola developed his now trademark style while looking through this TPB and also where he may have found some of his influences for later works. I'm just really fascinated by the pre-photoshop coloring. It's kind of nice to be able to tell that some of the lights are actual paint on a surface, rather than really slick computer stuff.

I'm really looking forward to getting my hands on this. Love Leiber's original stories and Mignola's art.

I remember when the originals came out, and I picked up the trade when I was at the comic shop on Free COmic Book Day, but I haven't had a chance to read it yet.

I have the originals for this wonderful series, but might get the TPB as well.

James, when you say "from several years ago" about that Corum adaptation, were you being literal? If so, I'm missing something! But I do have all the originals (Mignola) from the comic back in, hell, it must have been the 1980's. If he's done something new, I would love to know about it. Thanks!

It was definitely more than several years ago. I know he did a few issues, but then had the opportunity to do another comic that he really wanted to do; maybe even Hellboy.

James, I just looked up what I own from Mike Mignola's work on Corum. Of the 2 trilogies Moorcock wrote, Mike drew the 1st (the Swords trilogy--as good as any of the Elric stuff, as far as I'm concerned!), and the 1st book in the next story arc, "The Bull & The Spear". That was a total of 16 comics.

Please let me know if your mention of a TPB is something other than these works. Hell, I might get it just to have it in a TPB. Thanks.

FTR, I so-loved the Swords trilogy that I incorporated Kwll & Rhynn into my own D&D cosmology. They're 2 of 6 Elder Gods that are at the top of the foodchain, above even "normal" deities. Sometimes I call them "The Endless" (yes, I stole that from Gaiman's Sandman series), to represent that "gods" come and go, but these (6) will never go away...

Liberty's Edge

Picked this up a couple weeks back after reading the post here and browsing over it at the ol' FLGS. I must say Mike Mignola is a MUCH better artist than I thought initially and the stories they selected are interesting (not all great, but still good)and well adapted. Nice addition to my collection.

Nerak, you really need to check out Mike's Hellboy work. A good number of TPB collections exist, and they're quite excellent. If you do so, try to start w/ the 1st TPB, as some stories refer back to earlier stories and might be otherwise confusing that way. I don't have the name of the 1st TPB in front of me, but that shouldn't be hard to find out.

I'm definately impressed with his work now that I've gone through Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser. I picked up a Hellboy comic a few years back and didn't think too much of of it. I will have to check out some TPBs now though.

You can confirm this, but I believe the first few TPBs are: "The Right Hand of Doom"; "Seed of Destruction"; and "Wake the Devil". The movie was close to the comic mythology in many ways, but of course making it more "Hollywood" in the process...

Mike's great at conveying mood w/ little to no dialogue. Any fan of classic pulp fiction, HP Lovecraft, etc. should be a fan of Hellboy. In my humble opinion...

Whoops. This has become something of a threadjack :)

I started with "The Chained Coffin and Others" trade paperback, but the series starts with "Seed of Destruction". Initially, I wasn't terribly impressed by Mignola's style myself. But after reading "Chained Coffin" and really getting a good look at his drawing style I became a huge fan. Check out Amazing Screw-On Head, too, which is hilarious.
