There is something really special about the quality of gamers we've always had here on the Paizo site, and I've always wanted to run a game to celebrate the quality of gamer this site draws.
Paradoxically I've had to take numbers of people off the Paizo boards to some other site to do this, and it's always bothered me. I would love to do something here, so the people here could read and participate in it without having to go off somewhere else and give hits to some board I could care less about.
Any possibility of getting our own little corner of the boards to run Play by Post games in? It would really help!
Thanks!
Robert.

I'll second the request! The Campaign Journals section is an interesting read, but I think a Play-by-Post section would add a lot to the boards.
I'm not sure if its possible, but if there is a way for the beginner of a thread in that section to control who can and cannot post there, that would be a welcome addition, but I trust most of my fellow Paizonians not to be jerks so it shouldn't be an issue.

I play on a play-by-post site. I can tell you it takes a LOT of work by a large group of dedicated gamers to keep the site and games going strong. There are over 100 members on the site currently and most of them contribute their time and effort to running some of the game boards as well as their character posts. It can be done but it isn't easy.

I've done small venue post chats no problem. The DM posts, the players respond, the DM posts the next round. It doesn't have to be a huge deal. The mechanics of such a board wouldn't even have to be any different at all. It'd just be another heading under the Campaign Journal section or whatever.

Well if it happens, here's how it would work.
Someone on the D&D board announces a Play by Post game, give setting info, background, how many players for the party, whatever. So far I've got one going, and so does Saern--though ideally loads of people would be running games. People sign up and post their characters.
Once the game is good to go, the DM opens a post on Play by Post Games and posts the starting round and the players respond with their posts. Once everyone has posted, the DM posts the next post.
Currently I'm trying it out on the Campaign Journals board, but I'd like to have my own section to post in, so our games don't drown out all the people using the CJ section for what it was intended.

Yeah! I read it. Looks good! Just waiting for the rest of the party to reply and I'll zip out the next post.
I just hope that my 23 AC is enough to prevent me from getting squashed!
Does that format work for you as far as declaring rolls, actions, etc? I just went with something that seemed logical to me but if you have a different way you'd like us to do things, I have no problem changing.

Fatespinner: Honestly I could not be happier with the way people are posting. It's awesome. I love how people are getting so into it with vivid, wonderfully written posts! The mechanics seem to be helping guide the narrative rather than taking over and becoming a bunch of dry boring rules talk. It's really nice.
Mothman: Naw, you just check up on the thread whenever you're on and reply when you want. It's really pretty easy to coodinate. Feel free to take a look at the Shadura campaign under Campaign Journals if you want to see how it works. It's basically the same as following any other thread. The players just reply to the DM's posts. Granted it requires both DM and players to check in periodically to look for new posts and keep up, but it really is a nice compromise between chat based games (which are next to impossible to organize in my experience) and e-mail games (which take forever and usually break down after the first post or two).

I think a PbP section would be a fun (and relatively simple, I would think...) addition to the Paizo forums. From Paizo's standpoint: What better way to get people hooked on Dungeon's adventures than to offer a place for people to play more of them? From a gamer's standpoint: more games = more chances to try out the 837 billion character concepts you've had kicking around in your head for months now, that would otherwise probably never see the light of day. Win/win is what it sounds like to me. :)

Speaking as a PbP neophyte;
1.) How does one create the second account/avatar for use with the PbP campaign?
and
2.) Is there room for more players in the campaign?
Tackling the second question first, we already have seven characters, which is about the max I think I can handle. I'd love to do more games like this in the future, and would heartily encourage the DMs around here to run games of their own. It's really a blast! But yeah, sorry I've really got as many characters as I can handle without going insane...
As for the first question, basically the way we've been doing it is to create a new account by signing out, then signing back in and clicking Make New Account, then basically fill out the forms again, but with a different e-mail account, and your character's name as your avatar handle. Pick a character portrait that fits your character and you're ready to rock and roll. This likely won't work as a permanent solution since I don't know how kindly the good folks at Paizo will take to tons of people signing up for three or four or more additional accounts each. But until there's another way to do it, it's the best we got.

This is a fantastic idea! If it works out where/how would I sign up?
Well if the games are anything like the ones I've been involved with, the DM will post about an upcoming game, fill people in on the setting and whatever else, and then people submit characters. Then once the party is full, the DM sets up another thread to play the game in. Once it starts it's pretty straightforward--just post when you can!

So far, this site http://invisiblecastle.com/rolldice.py seems to be a fine one for rolling, and providing a log of rolls.

How does this play by post thing work? Do you roll your own dice or is there one of those electronic dice rollers?
Personally I'm using Invisible Castle to do all of my rolling. It's working decently so far.
Edit: Darn, ninja'd!

I think I am with Arctaris with this. I could see how a lot of the general stuff works, but the situations where a PC is dealing intimately with an NPC to get some info or in a broad sense, combat. I envision a 20 round battle with a player in Europe taking 2 weeks to finish or just the conversation with the local bartender just to find out that you should ask that drunk guard John about what happens down in that district.
Is there a mechanism to speed up this aspect of the game?

Grimcleaver,
am lurking you over on the PBP thread, do you do all the dice rolls or what, I dont really understand how peeps rolled up their characters; did you just let them post whatever? I am guessing all the rolls are by the gm as the gm handles chance and any chance event which should be no problem on this sort of game. Am thinking if I posted to someone that they got these 6 scores for stats and they could place there where they want; that would probably work, not sure; as a player i would be ok with a gm rolling all my chance stuff.

At Vatnisse's suggestion, I'm posting in a few threads that I happen to have an opening in my game at the moment. A character bowed out. Tequila Sunrise has top priority for the spot, but should he pass it for some reason, I've got more info in the D&D section, under "Online D&D (Not the MMO): The Show Must Go On!"

Saern, I'd be really honoured to play in your game (I have a lot of respect for you after reading many of your posts), but I've just put my name down for Arctaris' game ... and since I'm a complete novice to any sort of "over the internet" gaming, I think coming into a brand new game with first level characters might be a better option for me.
I'm quite sure you'll have NO trouble finding players - good luck!

I'm in the same position as Mothman. Good luck with your PbP campaign.

Well this game is part two of a campaign we were doing when my graphics card decided to explode--so all the chargen was a while ago. What I did was post suggesting I might run a game, gave some setting info and asked for some first level characters. People went nuts and I got flooded with responses. Chargen was roll 4d6 keep the best 3, roll 7 times keeping the best 6. I let people roll their own dice, and people have been--though ultimately for me the dice are the least important part. Usually they note their die roll right after the post. As DM tend not to advertise my die rolls, giving the results in prose rather than mechanics. So far it's been going really well.

This seems like a great idea to me as well, speaking as one of those who originally spent time on these messageboards but got lured away to a dedicated PbP site that I was introduced to by another member here. There is a section of Yahoo Groups dedicated to Play-by-Email games that people, new to the concept, can check out to get an idea for how characters and game mechanics can be handled. I'm also familiar with a site called myth-weavers.com that people interested in getting games going here might explore to see what might be possible in a Play-by-Post environment.
I have heard of other sites dedicated to Play-by-Post games as well, but I haven't explored any of them myself, so can't make any meaningful recommendations. I would be glad to see such features added to the Paizo site and can envision interesting adventure and article tie-ins and author-crafted supplements and expansions to published adventures adding further uniqueness and appeal to the games run here.

You know, that's a cool idea. It would be awesome if someone ran an AP game right here on the board. Could you imagine if we could even woo some of the big gun contributers and staff to go along? Wow.
At the very least it would be a neat way to experience the APs having them right here on the board that created them. Cool.

These PBP threads are really taking off and seem very cool; I would like to run one, but dont want to take up to much bandwidth or whatnot if that is an issue; I dont know these online details.
So, can we get an update on if a PBP section will be added?
Am thinking Sunday I may post some details on the game I would like to run and see if interest exists.
