I read it about fifteen years ago, and I suspect there were two or three. It was about a pretty straight yuppie type who ends up on a fantasy adventure. Somewhere behind the roofs in the harbour he sees masts from sailing ships, and slips into a parallel world where everything still in the "golden age" of sailing to the far Indies for magic spices and stuff.
All I remember is that they kind of sailed over the horizon and followed the sea lanes in the clouds or something.
Sorry, I can't quite put it in words, something about Gates of Dawn or something, maybe?

A series of books by Michael Scott Rohan. They are excellent.
The first was called Chase the Morning. Sequels were Gates of Noon and Cloud Castles. There is also Maxie's Demon which is in the same setting.carborundum RPG Superstar 2010 Top 32 |

Gates of NOON!
And Chase the Morning - that's the ones! Thank you ever so much :)
And Mr. Rohan too - that's right! An unusual amount of humour in them too, if I remember rightly - certainly a surprise after the Forge in the Forest series :)
Again, thank you! Now I'm off to ebay :)
No problem. Glad I could help. I (and my wife) think they are absolutely brilliant books. Lots of great humour in them too but also quality writing as was found in the first of teh forge int he forest books.
Good luck getting them on ebay.
