I think that intelligence was a power he took from someone because when he had his powers taken away he turned into an idiot.

Fair enough. I would really like to see somebody else actually using their power to its potential, and for some of the gaping holes in the plot to at least close up enough so that it resembles swiss cheese instead of a volleyball net. Some substance would be good. And could someone please clue me in to why I am still watching this show when I haven't even liked it since season one???? I just can't seem to stop....

Scarab Sages

I enjoyed most of the season finale, even though the closing of some plotlines left something to be desired. My big problem was....

Spoiler:
I like Sylar....I really do. However, the show's writers yet again went out of their way to retain Sylar as a potential villain, to the point that they completely ignored several story points:

Point 1 - Nathan didn't have to stay dead. He has already inexplicably come back to life at least once (at the beginning of this season no less). Not to mention the fact that, during Season 2 Noah Bennett was killed and brought back to life via an infusion of Claire's blood. Thus, they could have brought Nathan back the same way.

Point 2 - Why have Sylar impersonate Nathan when they already have someone (Peter) who could do so just as easily, at least long enough for them to develop a more permanent solution (i.e. bring Nathan back with the Claire's Blood Option)

Point 3 - Noah Bennett admonished Danko for getting "into bed" with Sylar, and then goes right ahead and does the same thing! WTF? Noah should be well aware that even a mind-wipe may not be forever.

As for Nathan's death, it didn't really bother me all that much. I didn't see much use for the character anymore, and it would have been just deserts for his role in causing all this. I do wish they would have shown more of the fight between Sylar and the Petrelli brothers.

I did love the way they eventually caught Sylar. Even though I like the character of Peter, I have to believe that the plan actually came from the mind of Noah Bennett. He is the only one who could ever, in my opinion, out think Sylar.

Also like seeing Tracy(?) again, with altered powers(?)!

Either way, I'll be back for Season 4, but I don't know if I'll stay.

** spoiler omitted **

Either way, I'll be back for Season 4, but I don't know if I'll stay.

I think the point is largely 1) to make Sylar an omnipresent threat w/o having to use him at any given time; 2) to give more plot viability to Nathan by adding a new layer to him. We also see how Angela's obsessive love can make her accept illusion for reality--a dangerous flaw in a Company 'Head'.

I am glad the producers have realized some characters were just too powerful to use (esp. Peter and Hiro) and scaled them back (of course, now we have Parkman's powers growing, esp. with the inexplicable ability to duplicate Isaac's power--enough with visions of the future already!). And although Sylar has been overused, I applaud the way they made sense of his wildly fluctuating personality/goals.

Dark Archive

What bugs me most about Sylar is what I call 'Rogue syndrome' (after the X-Man of the same name). He's got a freaking game-changing power, and he spends all of his time using *other people's* powers.

He's established that he can adapt himself to use the powers of anyone he meets, without having to kill them (as he did with Elle) *and* that he can modify the powers of other powered people he meets, tweaking *their* brains as readily as he does his own (as he does, fixing Elle's out of control electrical powers and also fixing Claire's problem with her healing ability shutting off her sensivity / pain threshold and making her unable to feel). He knows this. He's done it. Twice even, and yet it never occurs to him that he can not only 'take' powers, but also *grant* them, by re-arranging other people's brains/genes the same way he re-arranges himself (as he did to Claire and Elle).

He's the goose that lays golden eggs, and people who don't have powers are utterly at his whim if they want to be special (and even then, will only be as special as he chooses to make them, and their gifts will be utterly dependent upon him, since he can take them away as quickly), just as the people who already do have powers are utterly at his whim if they don't want him to take their powers away (which he could do, even without the quick and easy 'rip their head open' technique).

He's the Power-Broker of the Heroesverse, and he's too much of a nutjob to realize it (and if he doesn't figure it out, that his 'destiny' is more than just running around killing people, he's doomed to repeat his father's empty meaningless failure of a life).

The biggest flaw with this show is that the writers have chosen to construct a show about people with super-powers, and then find themselves writing out those powers the second they become inconvenient. Between Hiro and Peter, there seems to have been a dozen different ways that their powers were sidelined, shut down or made ineffective to prevent those two from utterly wrecking whatever dramatic plot is currently underway (and, when their powers *do* work, and they aren't sent to another time, stuck in another persons body or suffering amnesia, they have to be complete idiots and *choose* not to use their powers to affect the plot!). We've seen Noah Bennet come back from the dead after a dose of Claire's blood (and Surresh transported him from California to Odessa, Texas before reviving him, so he was dead for at least a couple of hours!), and yet Nathan lies there, not even a tenth as dead as Bennet was, and with both Claire (with healing blood) *and Sylar* (also with healing blood), sitting around like big old fat ressurection spells that nobody bothered to cast, despite people in the room (Noah, most obviously, since it had already been used to bring him back from the dead) knowing darn well how that worked.

(Heck, even Nathan knew about the healing blood thing, and if he still had brain function, might have been thinking very loudly, 'Heal me, you idiots!')

But no. Plot says that Nathan dies and Sylar must live, even if Noah could have said to Angela 'Uh, no. Watch this.' <Cut. Drip.> 'Welcome back, Nathan. Now let's cremate Sylar's body into fine ash before he wakes up, shall we?' So the healing blood thing conveniently is forgotten, and the writers cross their fingers and hope that the viewers don't remember it either... As well as the various other plot holes, such as Matt Parkman being able to telepathically implant memories from Nathan's life into Sylar's brain, despite not actually having the slightest clue about any of that stuff (having neither lived Nathan Petrelli's life, nor read his mind to find out that stuff).

Grr. Argh.

It does sound like the problem that comic book writers have.

I mean one of the discussions I read about Magik was that it wasn't so much she was too powerful, but she was too amoral with her power. Here's a character who would throw villians into her own pocket dimension to be tormented/eaten by demons without a second thought. And she can go anywhere any time. (Scry on Kingpin, take Kingpin, dump in Limbo, Kingpin solved. Next!) So rather than have her make a mistake and learn she couldn't just do that, they write her out.

Or the Scarlet Witch, or Phoenix (though Claremont meant for her to be killed, so maybe that doesn't count) Or Rogue, if she ever got past the psychological problems. (Read Dissolution and Rebirth, or Claremont's commentary on Rogue. When the Carol Danvers persona was 'timesharing' she could touch people w/o a problem) Or on the other Chromosome, Forge and Madison Jefferies, and Professor X to a lesser extent.

I was going nuts over the whole Nathan death thing too. With everything already established on this subject, the path they chose to take makes no sense. My sweety thinks they did it this way because the 'resurrecting blood' trick has been done before, and they didn't want to fall back on it again, and she may be right.

The one thing that gives me some glimmer of hope (or at least curiosity) is that we don't know what was done with Nathan's body...

I suspect that Nathan's body was the one they burned. Since they lack any sort of 'make a corpse that looks like Sylar' super-power I would *guess* that Matt Parkman made everyone see Nathan's corpse as Sylars. (Since that seems to be the only explanation for why everyone at the bonfire was seeing Sylar's corpse there, when there shouldn't have been a Sylar corpse available to burn.)

Then again, Matt could have just as easily made everyone see Sylar's corpse when there was no corpse there at all, *and* hide Nathan's corpse from sight until Angela and Noah could come back later to hide it / bury it / bake it into a pie and eat it / whatever, so perhaps Nathan's body is still out there somewhere...

It's not like the show bothered to tell us any of this, so it's all just speculation.

Actually, Noah mentioned that he had a body in cold storage that looked like Sylar- the original shapechanger. This is the body they burned.

The Claire's blood thing has been pissing me off since Sylar threw Peter out the window and she was tending his wound. It should have been "Oh you're hurt. Here. All better now."

Then, later that same episode, her bio-mom was losing control of her powers with Noah locked in the room with her. Noah should have just shot bio-mom between the eyes and said " Don't worry, Claire, once I'm safely out of here, you can just fix her."

The writers do every freakin thing they can to make Claire the most useless character on the show (except maybe Peter.)

Peter. Frak, he should have just touched Sylar after he had knocked him unconscious, absorbed his absorption power, cut his damn head open and taken all that power from him, then incinerated the bastard. What a freakin waste.

And next season: more Sylar, more "The Company". yay. Prediction: it will take Sylar to stop ice water girl. whoopie.

Wow, the guy that Danko ordered cremated? (Yeah, Noah stopped it from being immediately cremated, but was promptly forced to flee the room after 'shooting Sylar,' leaving the dudes ordered to cremate it right there, with a body, a cremator and standing orders to fire that puppy up!) So, whatever. Another case of the writers not reading their own stuff, I guess.

The corpse held up pretty well, since it was just lying around for, what, a week, with no embalming or preservatives? Wow. The explanation only makes the writing look worse. Parkman making everyone see Sylar when they burned Nathan would have made more sense, and not contradicted anything that was stated before...

I'd like to think that, but the Heroes writers have shown little willingness to do anything but variations on stuff they've already done. Isaac's paintings, Isaac's paintings, oh, now we'll use Matt Parkman's paintings! Hiro goes to the future and sees disaster. Peter goes to the future and sees disaster. Hiro goes to the future and sees disaster. All three seasons of the show have been about fighting the bad future, in one way or another. All overuse precognition. (It was great once. But to come right back to it?) They need to learn some new tricks.

There's not all bad episodes, but the ratio hasn't been in favor of compelling, strong episodes in a while.

Liberty's Edge

This is one of those shows that fares better on DVD--each week, watching season one, well, I sometimes forgot to watch. But I just bought the first 3 seasons from iTunes, and have been watching something like six episodes a night--I love this show! It comes across much better one episode after the next; in fact, I have been forcing myself to go to bed at night.

The biggest problem I have with this show is that the writers too often write themselves into a corner--when the plane crashed we needed to see Peter hang out for a while, so he suddenly can only manifest a single power at a time, which is an OK technique, but I must have internalized, "Frak, man! Just fly away!" a dozen times before he explains the situation to Tracy. Plus, the characters often go to a lot of trouble for something just to have it kind of fade off, like Mendez's lost sketchbook, or Daphne's death. Last gripe for me, the musical cues--there's some great cues in this show, but all told, there's something like 3 minutes total music, and they edit it in over-and-over-and-over!

I still love this show. :-)

Best Power? Hiro's.

New season thoughts.

Peter is still a douche and limited to one power.

Clair is still stupid. She wines she wants to be normal then jumps out a window.

Noah is still a bad ass.

Matt absorbed a part of Sylar when he mind wiped him. I still think they need to kill off Sylar but this new approach can be interesting as long as the writers don't overdo it.

Meh, I'll get around to watching my DVR sometime this week. Honestly, I have no real expectations.

Which is ok, because after walking away mid season last year I returned with the same 'I'm not expecting to be impressed' attitude and the rest of the season was not as eyes-bleeding horrible, so just maybe...

Xabulba wrote:

Stoopid writers, making the character I want to die most horribly un-killable...

"I'm just gonna be normal. Oh, I have a whacky impulsive idea to do something not-normal! Oh crap, for the 725th time, my cunning plan to live a normal life has been torpedoed by my ADD problem..."

Scarab Sages

I'm still split over this season. I like some of the new characters, like Samuel, but I'm still pissed over the whole Nathan/Sylar thing, and that they continue to limit Peter to only one power at a time.

And, maybe I'm just being an old perv here, but...

Spoiler:
I really wish American TV was less prudish so that Claire and her college roomy could get it on.

I'm just waiting for the old Sylar to reunite with the new Sylar and suck that carnival dry.
To me the idea of trying to bring Sylar into the fold is like the three pigs inviting the big bad wolf to dinner.
Also does anyone else agree that the Clair plotline is becoming Scooby-Dooish?

Shadow Lodge

Sccoby-Dooish? I'm still expecting her roommate's hair to turn red, since she was the one wearing the purple shirt!

What do you think of synesthesia lady? There's something I'd like to have, even without the power.

See I see the Sylar as Nathan situation as what happened in the Exiles comic a year or two ago. They had a body stealing nasty called prometheus who who had reality manipulation powers steal morphs body but then trumped him by brainwashing him to make him think he actually is morph. So they have Morph/Prometheus there to have morph, but also the threat of prometheus' personality popping back and a god like villian smashing them at anytime. Same situation as Nathan/Sylar. But then again that doesn't shock me much as everyone said they felt heroes was based on xmen anyway and exiles is an X title. But I agree I like the premise and such and loved season 1 but I got tired of the same crap over and over, ESPECIALLY the stupidity of Peter and Hiro, and the inexplicable power switchings and loss and new ways to get nerfed. I mean its like were watching someones homebrew emerging supers game of Champions/M&M and the GM can't figure out what to do with the two players with strong powers (mimic and Time control) and keeps needing ways to nerf them, and worst of all the players aren't very good at thinking things through so they make mistakes, and to further complicate things at least one player cant decide what character to play (Ali Larter) and the GM has a pet GMPC they cannot let go of (Sylar). At least thats how I see it at this point. Oh and in this interpretation Claire is actually the skill based character (Noah)'s DNPC (Dependant NPC) they got extra points for having to save and take care of all the time. At least thats how I see the show.

Stewart Perkins wrote:

Pretty much agree to all of that.

The writers had a neat idea, writing a soap operatic story about people with powers, but then utterly fell down as they realized time and time again that they had no freaking idea *how* to craft a storyline around the whiz-bang neat-o powers they chose.

They really could have benefitted from a few sessions of any superhero RPG, to get a feel for what sorts of powersets / characters would get auto-rejected from a game for being plot-wreckers. Instead they run with the plot-wreckers (Time travel? Hell no. Unlimited mimic? Are you high?) and have to find lame excuses season after season for why Hiro's powers can't actually do what Hiro's powers very clearly do, and why Peter's powers can't affect the outcome of any of the storylines the way Peter's powers very obviously could.

And now Claire's powers *make cancer worse!* Wow, I guess Adam managed to live 300 years or so without ever getting a melanoma... We already know that Claire/Adam's powers can eliminate scar tissue (as they did with Nathan's burn-scars at the beginning of season two), which is living tissue, just like a tumor, which means that, while the writers at least *tried* to come up with a reason why Claire couldn't heal Hiro, they still failed. (It's not like they don't conveniently forget that Claire's blood was able to resurrect her dad after he got shot in the eye and flown from California to Texas, several hours later, and allow Nathan to sit there with his cut throat, as if it was somehow 'too late' to bring him back from the dead.) Plus, using their logic, if Claire's 'healing' would have just made the tumor worse, then healing-kid's 'healing' would have done the same damn thing. Grr.

And, oh look, Peter had time travel again for an hour or so, and *once again to forget to save his girlfriend Caitlin, stuck where he abandoned her in a plague-ridden future.* It's been at least a year, if not two, and he's apparently *never wondered what happened to her.*

"Gosh, it's been two years since I've had sex. I wonder why that is? Oh crap! I forgot my girlfriend!"

Are they ever going to be truly rid of Sylar?

Also, who thinks 'Butterfly Man'(can't remember his name) was totally justified when he destroyed the police station a few episodes ago?

Just did a quick Google search and it appears that last night was the reveal of the Haitian's name (from the Heroes.com forums)
However, the internet does have this disturbing tendency to be wrong (and I KNOW my memory isn't the best), so I was wondering where you'd seen it before. :)

I was certain they had used it during the episode when they were in the jungle. I dunno. I thought he had told it to Claire before, or maybe it was just said when his passport was being checked? I could be wrong, but that's what I remembered.

I am really really sick of Sylar.

And I think this would have been a good end for the character who "died", and it is a shame the writers aren't going to let it stick. It would have wrapped up his story in heroic fashion.

Heroes lacks self-sacrifice and consequence too much of the time.

The problem is that Zachary Quinto is one of the show's most marketable stars. The won't write Hiro or Claire off the show for the same reason. It's just a shame that Sylar is such a one-dimensional character. If he had a narrative trajectory like (most of) the rest of the remaining cast, he wouldn't be nearly as annoying.

The Exchange Contributor, RPG Superstar 2008 Top 6

I have to say, of the "marketable" stars, Hiro is the only one I think has an interesting story. Claire might be interesting if she had better writing or a better actress. Sylar has a good actor behind him, just so little to work with, as you said. Not sure if Milo is considered one of the marketable stars or not at this point (obviously was at the beginning), but he's usually not give much to work with beyond "whiny Peter". His story is probably the most boring this season...

To be contrary, he's the only one who is out there every day using his powers and *not* whining about anything. Claire's all 'I want a normal life! But I insist on doing something mind-numbingly idiotic every 34 minutes to ruin any attempt at blending in!' and Hiro's all 'I can't mess with destiny!' or 'I have to do this the hard way to prove that I'm a hero!'

Peter's the only character on the show who *isn't* trapped in an emo death-spiral. (Other than Ando, who gets sucked into Hiro's angst-of-the-second, but otherwise would be a pretty together guy.) If anything, I'm a little befuddled by how happy Peter seems to be, considering he abandoned his last girlfriend in a plague-ridden future, and, apparently, forgot all about her...

Even Noah Bennet seems to be relegated to showing up every single episode and, completely unsolicited, telling some random person how his wife dumped him and he's living alone eating old take-out food. Get over it, HRG, nobody cares. Mr. Muggles has moved on.

Paizo Employee Director of Brand Strategy

Last night's episode was really boring. It might be my least favorite of the series so far. They couldn't have come up with a better way to get all the exposition about Samuel into the script? And way to leave us with several lame cliffhangers. This whole Parkman/Sylar/Nathan triangle has completely jumped the shark now and Mohinder in the padded room--really? I had a feeling they didn't know where this season was going but now I know for sure. Let's hope they can at least partially salvage it soon.

I was sort of glad that he disappeared, even though we didn't have an explanation until this week. I guess I should count my blessings, though--he could have come back as a completely different character with no knowledge of his lookalike.
