Starting the savage tide (spoilers)

Savage Tide Adventure Path

Hey everyone, my group started the savage tide last night.

we're playing in Greyhawk and I'm basically running the adventures as presented in the magazine.
The party consists of a male human artificer ( I allowed this because the player seemed very interested in improving the ship and really exploring the craft skills, we've de-eberroned the class a bit.) a human fighter who has imp. unarmed, power attack, imp. bull rush and is all about brawling, and an elven conjurer. We got as far as the boat, and it was excitingbecause they came up with a great plan to get on to the boat. The conjurer summoned a monkey who acted like he got ou of his crate( cuz the pirates are animal smugglers) and two of the pirates chased after him. Only to run right into the fighter, who knocked them out and took their gear. They now plan to use disguise self to replace the two pirates with themselves, and are going to hide the conjurer in a crate, and walk right onto the ship and meet soller vark.

I am really excited by how creative the group is being with their abilities so far. Is anyone else running it yet, what are you party detail. How'd it start up?

That's slick with the monkey.
Just curious what 'de-eberroning' the artificer means. I like stuff like that.

That was a slick plan...

Do you plan on letting the Scarlet Brotherhood rendezvous go down? If so, your players may end up being too clever for their own good. The SB are much more clever, experienced, and often have magical support. When the SB ship's wizard routinely scans the thug crew of Blue Nixie for magic and starts pinging on magically disguised PCs, there's going to be trouble.

You could really have fun with this. Most likely the PCs would jump ship faced with so many enemies. You could run a simultaneous scenario alongside the adventures taking place in the Sasserine area of the Scarlet Brotherhood tracking them down to silence them. Anyway, good luck!

Yeah the conjurer is going to get bonus xp for that. in fact they will prolly all get bonus xp for the great plan.

Basically we are looking at the artifcer infusion list and ability list and anything thats more high tech than greyhawk we are limiting or taking out. Like artificers won't get the high level infusion that turns you into a warforged titan for a short while. Those sort of things were what i meant by de-eberroning. He's going with the idea that basically he backwards engineers magic, and understands the math and science of it well enough to duplicate its effects as magic items, since he himself isn't super talented in producing magic on his own like a wizard or cleric or sorceror would.

Well, I was actually thinking that since they came late at night and the ship is more active now I would let their ruse work until Soller Vark or his lover (name?) saw them, I imagine those two being more in the know and suspicious and asking somethign like "who are you, haven't seen you before?", then letting the fight break out properly. Although if they could somehow keep their ruse up until the scarlet brotherhood show up, then things could get interesting.

My main worry was that if they fought the whole pirate ship at once they would get whomped, (one fighter, one elf conjurer hp of 4, one human artificer, prolly hp of 6-8) So wen they came up with their lil plan to get on the ship, I thought it'd be a good way for them to get the element of surprise and drop a few pirates quickly.

Plus since there's three of them I told them at character creation that they'd have to be creative in how they problem solve, since they are outnumbered and can't always just fight head on.

Thanks for the feedback so far though its been very helpful.

Yes, this is very true. My group of 5 got their asses handed to them with a somewhat more direct approach. Fortunately, they escaped with their lives. They returned a while later after procuring healing and tried a sneakier way of getting the job done which involved the druid's albatross animal companion dive bombing the crew, knocking lanterns over, and generally spooking the sailors. Because the albatross is seen as good luck and 99% of sailors would never tempt fate by harming one, it made for a really great and clever diversion.

With several of the thugs jumping ship out of supersticious fear, it made a head to head fight with Soller Vark and his remaining thugs much more doable.

My group swam out to the boat, got a brief glimpse of a few guys moving around on the deck with lanterns, and decided to let it be.

They went back to their inn, came back the next night, and ransacked the ship for the ring.

About as anticlimatic as you can get, really. *laugh*

pirates + monkey = teh win

I was thinking, maybe a bag of marbles on the deck of the ship, followed by some molotov cocktails.

Not bad, but I don't know how you're supposed to get the ring or whatever off of a burning ship. I, ah, don't have the adventure yet, so all I know about it is Steve Greer's adventure log and what's been posted here, it seems like a snatch (or sneak, or Bluff) and grab mission.

'Course, you could sneak on, knock out the pirates, lock 'em below deck, then set fire to the ship. Do I smell smoked pirate barbeque? Mmm-mmm! Call up the ninjas and tell 'em to bring the sake! That's good eat'n!

After all, Lady Vanderboren didn't want the boat back, right?

Umm, I get the feeling Lavinia wants her family's boat left intact. Sadly, explosions can't just solve every problem. I liek that my group did the ol knock em unconscious and take their armor gag, like in the movies.

You're right, I guess. (walks away sulking)

I love the brawler!!!

My kind of PC. I like a fighter with the moxy to go unarmed! Improved Unarmed Strike is THE feat as far as I'm concerned. If you don't have it, you have no nut-power. ;-)

Sometimes it just feels so great to clean someone's clock with nothing but your own flesh-and-blood fist! Go brawler! I want more of his exploits!

That is a killer plan. I love disguise self. I have gotten myself into some doozies of situations with that spell...ahh memories!

I apologize. I should have ended that last sentence with one of these. ----> :)

The Blue Nixie has a pretty important role to play in the third adventure, so if the PCs decide to burn it to the waterline in "There Is No Honor," there'll need to be some... adjustments... to "Sea Wyvern's Wake."

And the christening of the brand spanking new Red Nixie no doubt. Or Nixie's Revenge maybe.

Or the Tricksy Nixie. Or Blue Nixie II: Electric Boogaloo. Or Blue Nixie 3D. Or Blue Nixie IV: Nixie in Space. Or Blue Nixie V: Nixie in the Hood. Or Blue Nixie VI: Nixie in the Hood II.

Actually Blue Nixie II: the Wrath of Khan has a nice ring. Though we could combine the concepts and make it Blue Nixie II: the Wrath of ShakaKhan.

KHAAAAAAAAN!!!

Stop it! OMG. I'm really not supposed to laugh like that in the work place. Sheesh.

That should actaully be Blue Nixie II: The Wrath of CON, shouldn't it?

Wow what a pun. Good thing you are paid to write fantasy adventure, and not comedy. Just messing with ya.

Anyway if you like this thread check out the the thread my players made its in campaign journals and called two humans an elf and a savage tide. Just be careful about any spoilers I made that thread so they could chat about savage tide ina spoiler free zone. We should be playign a again in a few days maybe then we'll have more stories for all you guys to make jokes about.

By the way James i really like this adventure, Good work, it's a great start to the campaign and is cool because its alot less dungeon crawlie then the whispering cairn was. I hope thats a trend for savage tide. Not that anythign was wrong with AoW just that its nice to see variety.
My players and I are so far enjoying this change of pace and the overall feel of savage tide.

That reminds of a prestige class that someone has put on their website shortly after 3.0 came out. It was called the Ro-Sham-Bo master, if I recall correctly. Now that is a brawler, ;)

Seriously, I once tried using that as a gag in a game I ran and the poor Ro-Sham-Bo gnome master received three arrows in the family jewels after challenging the group's tiefling. No more Ro-Sham-Bo masters after that. Although the gnome master might make an appearance in the STAP, just because it's funny. :) God, I need to grow up someday.

Cheers.

If things turn "bad" for the current game I'm running for my "Sunday-Knights" as I've come to call 'em... I have been thinking about running Savage Tide (either as is, for ease of some players not having certain setting books) or maybe in the Eberron setting. (I'm thinking that Sasserine will be the equivalent of the Lhazaar Principalities (or maybe Q'Barra) and that maybe the Lotus Dragons will be traded in for one of the lesser known *darn-it don't have my Eberron book handy* (ah here it is) one of the lesser known Lhazaar princes, and the Vanderborens could remain as is, just make them the ir'Vanderborns.) I'm wondering if I'm anywhere near to what is in the write-up for the conversion notes? I'm guessing that Demogorgon will be some powerful entity from the Age of Demons or something. Perhaps his first Savage Tide occured shortly after Lhazaar of Sarlona and her refugees arrived? I'm a-quiver with anticipation. (Hmmm maybe I shouldn't have posted here as I haven't actually started the Savage Tide... my apologies.)

What about your monitor? Or your co-workers? ;)

I almost had a heart attack when I heard my friend say "I unload my self-reloading crossbow with the flaming, frost, and shocking arrows...at his huevos!"

Me: "*sputter!* What?? Ummm, I think you did enough damage to knock him out cold, despite his steel britches."

Too much laughter ensues. Game comes to a halt for 20 minutes. Game was never the same again. ;)

Cheers.

CB out.

Don't worry about it.

I don't know what to tell ya about eberron, I'm a huge ebrron fan but all the planar stuff just seemed hard for eberron plus the boat stuff didn't seem like it'd be as cool when people have better boats and even airships. The conversion notes should be out soon tho.

anyway if any of you wanna check out my players' savage tide page here's the link.

They seem to like the idea of havign their own place to post stuff and would love to hear about any of their ideas that you guys liked.

thanks jay

That certainly added some excitement when I tried that at work a month ago.

On a related topic, if anyone knows of employers looking for a hard worker with singed eyebrows, please let me know.

Sovereign Court

Hallo all.
Iam from denmark were i cant get the new issue of Dungeon jet. But a getting prepared for playing Savage tide. Do any of you have a great idee for a god of the sea or does it gome with Sasserine? My setting is not in any world other than a standard world..
Plz help

Marcus,

It talks about the gods worshipped in Sasserine in the background (one for each of the seven sections of the city). The exception is the Sea gods which are worshiped as a group. While it doesn't go into a lot of detail on these, it does say what domains are available to a cleric who worships/serves them all at once.

Sovereign Court

Sean.
Thxs. Does the sea gods have any names or are they just known as the sea gods? The domains the Cleric gets are Wather and ??

Sovereign Court

Any one, some domains fore the sea gods??

Marcus Gehrcke wrote:

The Azure Cathedral is dedicated to Osprem, Procan, and Xerbo. The Living Greyhawk list o' deities (zipped PDF) defines their domains and such.

You can also worship all three at once, with the domains Luck, Strength, Travel, and Water.
