City of Heroes. (Need to know some info if you have any..)

Video Games

The Koga didn't see a video games section so he'd thought he'd post it here, The Koga use to be a big comic book fan as a kid, not so much now, but still enjoying something super-hero related every now and again, so he thought about getting City of Heroes, but he doesn't know if his computer can handle it..

You see, he's not exactly knowledgable about how memory works, all he sees is numbers when you meation gigabytes or megabytes, he doesn't know how much his computer has left, or if it can function optimal on a ceartain amount or what, all he knows is estimative games and how they do.

The Koga's computer handles Diablo 2 with no problem.
The Koga's computer cannot handle Knights of the Old Republic, within minutes the game freezes and shuts itself off.

So, is City of Heroes more like Diablo or KoToR as far as memory go's? And is it even wroth considering getting? And what kindof superheroes do you all have? (Just incase The Koga wants to go looking for you and form a Justice League..)

OK; here is my lowdown on COH and COV. I played them both; the first about a year; the second about 6 month as I want to support the genre, but this game is not what your looking for if you want to really play a superhero or villain.

First, they are took a massive big turn from beta; admitted they thought the public was stupid, and instituted pathetic archtypes. This means you play a class very much like in any other game; a warrior; alternative warrior; healer; blaster, and crowd control guy; you have one major focus; defense; melee damage; buff/heal; range damage; aoe mezz/stun/etc. You cannot do anything else worth a spit.

Secondly; this game has the absolute best character creation development section I have ever seen in a game bar none. The costumes and costume variations; body forms and variations just plain rock. My wife likes making up toons much more than playing them for instance. The game is worth getting just to play this part. It is really pathetic that D&D online did not do something more like this as in that game many, many player look identical.

Thirdly; the game is VERY repetative. The supers outnumber the normals and the bad guys massively; on the street there are hordes of both bad guys and heroes; many heroes will jump into your fights unasked (on the street) though many will also buff and heal you. No matter how many bad guys you defeat, YOU WILL NOT MAKE A DIFFERENCE. Sorry for shouting, but I have angst about this. You will not affect the game in any way, shape or form; ie you are worthless as far as the environment is concerned.

Furthermore, at the lowerst levels, everyone is pretty much even in abilites; around 15 you start noticing that your toon really sucks at a lot of things and is good at one thing only; (the movement powers are cool though), by level 25 you begin to realize your are a specialist that must group up soon or you stand no chance of even fighting your way out of a wet paper bag. By 35 you notice that as a blaster, most significant bad guys can one shot kill you so first shot more or less wins, as a warrior type ie tank (defensive) you notice you can take a whole lot of damage but really dont put out much, other classes fall more or less in the middle.

Lastly, CoH is big; lots to see and do; interesting badges to get; as in all games, some groups are better than others. This game is enjoyable at first, but has no lasting appeal. Best to play with real life friends, imho.

COV is much of the same thing; though the archtypes are much better designed. If you like grouping; can play frequently as to not get left behind in level; can make lasting aquaintences to play with; this may be the game for you; if you like mostly solo play or get irritated with groups; this is probably not the game for you after level 25.

Hope this helps.

Regen Scrapper, 6 slot your healing and flurry. You will be as close to unstoppable as the game allows. If your pc cannot handle KOTOR you may have a problem, rendering what I just wrote moot.

I like CoH and CoV.

That said, if you are having problems with a newer game, you may very well have trouble with CoV, which has more stringent requirements than CoH.

I enjoy both games, and don't get bothered by the repetitiveness too much... but then, I was raised on PacMan.

I do wish that travel powers came earlier, as much of early play is dedicated to running from area to area to do missions... travel powers (available at 14th level) cut this considerably.

Character creation is great fun and the options are truly spectacular. In addition, characters can go on missions for additional costumes at 20th, 30th and 40th levels. And you can go on a mission to get a cape at 20th.

As I said, I enjoy the game immensely and would recommend it... but I do hear the complaints voiced earlier about repetitiveness from a number of people online.

It depends to some degree on your expectations. The game is very combat focused, and combat tends to be a little repetitive.

I must add; the game does look great; great animation; pretty good power displays and all that; is a lot of fun at first; it just gets very weary on you after eight months or so.

I really can't speak to that, as I haven't had the game for that long. Right now it's still very fun.

I've played the game since it's been released and it's a very fun game. Like all MMORPG's, you have to get involved in the community of the game to really enjoy playing the game. It's an awesome game if you can find a nice Super Group and make some friends to run missions with, Player vs. Player, have a Super Group base to defend, etc. I don't really agree with most of Valegrim's opinions of the game, however the only way for you to find out is to play the game...

Toraq, I am kinda curious what you don't agree with; that the game looks great, that the game has the best character creation, that the game has neat effects, or that it is extremely repetative which can get intenstly booring? If it is the last one; am curious how many times you have run through the same mission over and over; killed the same guys on the street over and over; got the same badges over and over, I could go on, but heck, you play it and should know. I agree that a group in any MMORPG makes all the difference in the world as does the guild you are in; but then are you playing the game for fun; or is it just a big chat of fun. I dont find that this game in gameplay terms stands out against other more play inovative games. For example, I find AD&D Online to be repetative, but not as bad as COH, I find AD&D Online to be extremely group dependant from day one; whereas you can solo COH till mid 20's to 30's depending. My biggest gripe about COH is the frustration level; you are just not a hero; you are a fantasy mob in supertights; the classes could be exchanged 1 for 1 to any other game for fighter; range guy, ect; this is not how the game was supposed to be until their crappy board meeting at the end of beta in which they axes the whole concept of character creation and jammed the archtypes down our throat; yes i am bitter, this game could have been so much more; much much more.
