So my party encoutered the ulgurstasta and my Elocater was hasted, ran to the lower level of the colleseum and threw the 60 vials of Alchemists Fire into a bag of holding. He then proceded to dimentional door above the beast and empty the bag out. I believe my DM was more then generous by giving me 15 hits on the beast but this was after he had rolled and said that I had gotten 39 through. After rolling 39d6 I got 136 which was a tremendous ammount of damage. We deliberated on how this would work and another one of the players said that since the ulgurstasta has those hairs that it should get concealment. The DM thought that logically even though the hairs stop all mundane projectiles eventually they would be burned away enough for the Alchemist's fire to break through. Now I've been thinking of keeping a bag full of a good ammount of vials for just incase situations and even though the best bag of holding can hold 1500lbs or 1500 vials I would never do that to the DM. At what "level" would you as DMs allow this to go? The ammount of damage that you would allow and such.

The first time, I'd allow this, as I think it's a novel solution that deserves a reward.

If I thought it was going to be something my players would always rely on, however, I'd make using such a trick far more risky & less successful than the first time, perhaps even allowing a "mishap," when all the AF's explode as soon as the bag's opened.

Edit: Er... I just re-read the original post, and this isn't exactly what he was saying. But this argument is still kinda valid, I guess. :-P

The way I see it, unless the PCs are gonna make 60 attack rolls, and take 60 attack actions to do it, they don't do the same amount of damage that 60 flasks of alchemist's fire would do. If I throw a bag of rocks at someone, it's gonna hurt- but not nearly as much as if I threw them each individually, since most of the rocks (particularly the ones in the middle) will not be coming in contact with you at all. The same way, you can't throw a bag of 60 alchemist's fires at someone and have all 60 break at the same time, because there's no way they would all break, let alone affect the target creature. Even if you're not throwing a bag of them, just dropping them on someone is going to not only have next to no accuracy, but there isn't going to be the same amount of power behind them.

So, once again, unless they're making the attack rolls and taking the actions necessary, they don't do anywhere near as much damage.

In the desciption for a Bag of Holding in the DMG (pg. 248), it mentions that retriving a specific item from teh bag is a move action. If the bag holds more stuff than would fit into a normal backpack, it takes a full-round action. That's for 1 item.

Also, I would think that the "Tendrils" ability of the Apostle of Kyuss would render it immune to the nonmagical ranged attacks of teh splash weapon.

A bag of holding is actually a portal to an nondimensional space.

It doesn't state this clearly in the DMG, but I suspect that it probably has objective directional gravity with "down" being always away from the entrance to the space (ie: the opening of the bag is always up, the "bottom" of the bag is always down.) As someone else pointed out, it's a move equivalent action to retrieve a specific item from a bag of holding. A full round action if it contains more than a normal backpack.

I'd rule that it would take the same time to put an item INTO the bag, especially Alchemists Fire which is already fairly unstable.

However, in the players defense, the DMG does state that if a bag of holding is turned inside out, its contents spill out unharmed. That could be used as a way to dump the contents of the bag out quickly.

As a side note, I'm a tad curious to know how your party got a hold of a Type IV bag of holding by 9th level. I know there's a Type I bag in Hall of Harsh Reflections, but unless you've been running some side treks for cash, 10,000 gp for a Type IV bag should still be out of your party's reach financially by the Champions Belt.

I don't get that. By Champions Belt they have more than enough loot should they wish to pool their resources and buy one. Just selling all the low level armour +weapons from 3faces would probibly get them to 10,000. When you consider selling the magic mirror found in harsh reflections and other loot like the clone gems..easy to buy a 10,000gp item.
