Has anyone else read Jim Butcher's the Dresden Files? The adventures of a modern day wizard in Chicago. I must admit that I read the first in the series (Storefront) and I was hooked immediately.

I have. I'm a big fan of the Dresden Files and am waiting on number 8 (Proven Guilty).

I'm reading Summer Knight now, my wife started reading them a couple of years ago and finally got me hooked.

I read a rumor (I think it was in TV Guide) that someone Nicholas Cage, if memory serves, is considering producing a TV series based on the books. There was no word on actors.

Of course the key words here are "rumor" and "considering"- while this could be very cool it could also never come to pass.

Actually, the TV series is well on its way. Check out Jim Butcher's website: http://www.jim-butcher.com/news/

From what I have heard, James Marsters (who did the books on tape) was at one time the front runner for the role of Dresden but the part went to Paul Blackthorne, who is actually the right height. I'm a big fan of Marsters myself and I would have liked to have seen him in the part but Marsters was one of the first to admit that he wasn't nearly tall enough.

I love this series but i feel like its being rushed. I am looking forward to seeing how the movie comes out. But are you guys aware they are also developing a RPG with green ronin i know i can't wait to see it.

Actually, yeah. I was aware of the RPG although I did not know that the very capable people at Green Ronin were doing it. Very cool.

As it is, Dresden has been the inspiration for more than one of the characters that I have played in various modern setting/fantasy/horor GURPS games over the last couple of years.

Actually i need to correct myself its Evil hat who is developing the game i was just reading a green ronin book before typing this sorry

I just finished all of them -- wow, they were really entertaining, and I am now an official fan.

The last few weeks I was going to Borders Books store, buying a Mocha and reading 7-8 chapters at a time. That place must have huge margins on coffee to let us do that. "That" being to read books for free.

for those of you who enjoyed the series, it just came out on dvd - it was canceled because of 'high production costs' after the first season

I am going to make a GURPS adventure in the same vein now.

I'm suprised a Dresden RPG has not yet been released.

If you remove a chunk of the background from McWoD and keep the mechanics, I think it's very dresden. The books do differ from the tb show. First, you'll hate Murphy. Second, the TV version of Bob is a hoot.

"...before you 'self defensed' him to death."

Scarab Sages

Hay! I like Murphy! Both in the books and TV.
Bob on TV is awesome! That actor guy is the bomb!

It got canceled!?!?!?! Dam :(
I better get the DVD quick then.

(All the TV shows I like get canceled....)

The books are awesome. I wasn't too thrilled with Stormfront, but when the show came on I went and bought the rest of the books. Love them!

Sovereign Court Wayfinder, PaizoCon Founder

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I powered through all of the Dresden Files. Jim Butcher rocks!

I also HIGHLY recommend his Codex Alera series, starting with Furies of Calderon. It's a wonderful series. Jim says it's the Lost Roman Legion meets Pokemon. I think Last Avatar, myself.....

Oh, and apparently there IS a roleplaying game coming: www.dresdenfilesrpg.com

yep; i have them all; check his site regulary and am a member of the forums there; the first one was Stormfront though; hehe storefront is more like a marketing nightmare :)

I didnt like codex Aliera :(

well, Scifi really choked the chicken on the series; what a bunch of megaidiots; they firefly'd it; I could seriously rant on 5 basic tenets that they violated and shot themselves in the foot with what could have been the next Buffy series; all kidding aside; Buffy ran for many years and has a huge devoted following and that story doesnt have a third the depth of the Dresden Files. I am totally broiled on this issue, yep fightin mad and can name names and point fingers.

I'm upset too,

As to the novels. I picture Murphy looking like Katie Sakoff (sp?).

I like the TV Bob better, though I still 'hear' his voice when the novel Bob speaks.

Just started book 3, Michael already scores points in my book. Finally, a Chirstian Priest/Wizard type! (Something I always wanted to see on Charmed).

I think that in the TV show they combined Murphy and Susan into one person.

Hey, Heathy, have you read book 2 of this series yet? I was thinking about you the whole time I was reading it. :-)

I also think book 3 "Grave Peril" should be made into a feature length movie. I laughed out loud when I found out what his costume was at the vampire ball, and the image of him laying waste in ducky shorts must... must be seen to be believed.

Am just reading the series and am enjoying it at the moment. The first book was pretty solid for the most part, until about 4/5 of the way

Spoiler:
Just after halfway through the big seige battle, which itself was well written. However it all went to pot when Tavi arrived on the back of the huge beast
which is when I felt that the storyline and the characters fell apart a bit, and the way that a lot of the characters acted towards one another seemed a bit out of synch with what had previously been shown to us regarding their behaviour, but up until then it was all a good read.

I read Deadline, I think it's called, first. I didn't know it was a series. Then went back and read the rest before I deployed. What is out now? I totally missed the TV series. Damn Sci-Fi Channel...

I just bought #2. The first one suprised me at how good it was.

I wish they would make a movie from these books.

Excellent series, and it only gets better as it goes on and all the threads laid in the previous books start to come together.

His fantasy series, Codex Alera, is very good as well.

I notice Butcher has put out a few high fantasy books. I have not read them yet, but plan to soon.

But! did another Harry Dresden book just come out very recently?? I need to check that out.

"Small Favor (The Dresden Files, Book 10)" is coming out on April 1st. At least April 1st is the shipping date listed on Amazon.com.

oooh; thanks for the info and uhm; stop looking at my grey cloak and yes I know that it doesnt hold bloodstains.

ok; pick one and only one, I know it is terribly hard; but one scene or one line as your favorite and post it; I know mine; but want to look it up so I can post the page number. we need to do this on the sly so we dont ruine the story for those who have not read it; am thinking post the book and page number and a bit of from here to here for the scene; any other ideas?

In Dead Beat, the scene of Butter's drawing a protective circle while his one-man band provided the beat for the heart of Sue the Dinosaur.

nobody wants to do favorite scene? :(

The Exchange

I quite like the scene from book 1 where he is fighting the demon in the street wearing just a towel, and then he loses said towel, all while his prospective girlfriend is there. Supernatural smack-down and awkward social situation, all in one.

The Exchange

And his cure for the supernatural allure of one of the Queens of Winter, involving pouring the contents of an icebucket over his crotch.

The Pizza King, Charge! says Toot Toot; hehe

For days after I laughed about that scene when I thought about it.

Liberty's Edge

I liked the scene (I believe that it at the end of book 4)where Harry ends up playing a barbarian in a RPG with by the Alphas.

I'm not sure I could do just one...and without any books other than Small Favor close to hand makes it tougher. Although the novella with Thomas LARPing was pretty funny.

Yeah one is too hard...

Spoiler:
Charity marching into the heart of Winter.

"Nickelheads"

There are others but I'll stop.

Yes, he requested thews. I really enjoyed that ending too. :-)

... I really enjoyed the concept and imagery behind Ortega, of the red court, being taken out from orbit. That threw me for such a loop, that it has become a favorite point for me.

... I like the image of harry coming around the corner to fight the loup garou, his hair and duster blazing out, while Murphy stands in a shooters stance protecting her fallen partner.

... the entire Fey War above Lake Michigan.

... I think it is cool he has a fallen angel buried in his lab.

... The demon attack on his apartment in book one.

... The run in with Molly, up in the tree house, really resonates Harry's personality for me.

... as I mention above, the fight at Bianca's vampire ball.

(more later)

I thought that was pretty cool as well. Who would have thunk?

Um, folks? Spoiler tags? (preferably with an indication of which book it's from, so we know if they're safe to read).

Thanks!

yeah; the Molly tree house conversation was excellent. And I am really getting to like Butters character hehe and he can keep a beat to boot; love one of his first introduction conversations where Harry is monosylabic about the magic germs hehe, but the scene where that little guy Butters stands in a circle beating that drum for all he is worth so Harry's mount can hear the beat while all the world starts crashing down is awesome; think the mount was named Sue hehe.

I dont think I could resist that fragement of the Fallen; sheesh, that must be rough, talk about total virtual anything at your fingertips; whew.

ok; one of my all time favorites, well, besides his banter and comeraderie with Ramirez hehe especially the "anybody who lets me ride his X can call me" hehe dont want to spoil it for anyone :)

ok; here it is, is a quote so dont read it if you have not read Dead Beat, pg 286:

"we are going to hunt those murderous bast@ards down and kill them"
there was dead silence in the kitchen.
Thomas and Butter both stare at me, expressions aprehensive
(now my favorite part; love Bob)
"Maybe its the cloak" Bob suggested brightly. "Harry, do your feel more judgemental and self-rightous than you did this morning?"

ok; tense moment in the book; but I was rolling in laughter; love Bob.

ok; cant stop, am a Jim Butcher addict; name this scene; another intense moment. I just love this series heh might be a Harry-a-holic

Michael and Sanya aren't weak. Fortunately for you, there're good men"
Cassious laughed at me.
Unfortunately for you, I'm not"

pg 300. Death Masks; that scene kinda shocked me; didnt expect him to act out like that, hit me and made me ponder.

hmm, will try not to give away the particulars; just enough to spark memory; it is academically correct to always give book and page to give due credit.

I would like to second that :)

My sisIL got hooked and sent over almost the whole series (up to white night in hard cover). My Mate read them all in the following month and I read the first two inside of ten days (wish I could speed read too sometimes). Starting book three in about 30 mins :)

Watched the whole first season recently too, but found it written poorly. The later episodes were better written, but by then it was too little too late. *sigh* So much wasted potential....

One of the things that makes Dresden great imho is the way he treats magic. It is not like he 'reaches deep inside himself' or 'gathers arcane energy and reshapes the very fabric of the universe'. Rather it is just a few simple rules as a teaser (circles, hereditary silver, 8 parts of a potion) and *bam* cue special effects.

Ok I guess one thing that did make me go back and reread the previous paragraph 'cause I thought I missed something... Stormfront pg 77

Spoiler:

The man with the naked sword in his hands... First intro of Morgan. one second he is talking pizza with the fairie, the next there is a mand with sword drawn bearing down. Then he calmy describes the man and what kind of panic should set in but doesn't.
JB does this turn around a lot but this was one of the first.

The Exchange RPG Superstar 2010 Top 16

I just finished with "Small Favors". I thought that everything about every scene with the gruffs was just terrific.

One aspect of Harry that the books keep cycling back to is his ability to simply out-think his opponents. "Lateral thinking" is almost always the important key to solving Dresden's serious confrontations.

Proven Guilty; pg 37 Bob and Harry in the Lab

Spoiler:

Bah, Bob said; none of the evil geniuses I ever worked for could have handled something like this" He paused. " Though some of the psychotics could have, I guess"
(Harry) If that's meant to be flattering, you need some practice."
"What am I if not good for you ego, boss?

I love this kind of interplay in the books.

Yeah but I still hear Terrance Mann's voice. He's the one aspect of the series I liked more than the books.

I still wonder why Harry doesn't use his magic to heat water for a shower.
