PC Name: Indrisaliya "Indri" Nightwind
PC Race/Class: Female Gray Elf Wizard 5
Adventure: Three Faces of Evil
Location of Death: Pillar room just outside the alter room in Vecna's area
Catalyst: Necklace of Fireballs and low Constitution
Other Party Members: Leila - Female Human Barbarian 5, Shade - Wolf Cohort of Leila (Wild Cohort feat), Gunther - Male Human Crusader of Heironeous 5, Gadby - Male Halfling Cleric of Wee Jas 5

First actual death in the campaign, though without one fate point each (see my house rule here), there would have been earlier deaths at Erythnul's temple (all but one of the party members used a fate point and went to -10 combating the two archers).

The party had gone into Vecna's temple and been ambushed by the first group of Kenku. The battle was at a standstill, each side rolling rather poorly, until the second group arrived. Indri, with the Storm Bolt reserve feat, quickly brought three to 0. The next three switched out with them, while the three at 0 moved off to warn the boss. They got away, and the party spent a few more rounds mopping up the remainder.

When they arrived at the pillar room, they all made their spot checks and none of them beat the Kenku's hide check, so they each got a standard surprise action. The two rogues went up front to block the boss and sorcerer. The sorcerer cast a grease spell under Leila and Gunther, and the boss cast his 5d6 fireball. These adventurers had already cleaved through more than half of his kenkus, and he was rightly worried. The first fireball damaged everyone, but didn't drop anyone. On the first round of combat, only one person got to go before his initiative came up again (he rolled high), and he threw in a 3d6 fireball. Most were still ok, even Indri made her save, but because she had failed on the 5d6 one, she dropped to negatives. The party still hadn't been able to get past the rogues to the boss by the next round, and the last 3d6 fireball (which I rolled well on) killed poor Indri in a cascade of flame.

On the plus side, the three remaining made a rather large mock of the Faceless One and Ebon Aspect, even with Shade told to stay behind (he was rather wounded). The Faceless One and his acolytes made good use of tactics and summons to surround and web the party, but Leila was enlarged (Gadby with a wand and the magic domain) and was directly responsible for ending one summon instantly with a crit. The one before that was dispelled by Gadby, and the third one lasted long enough for the Faceless One to flee to the main pool chamber. The party thought he was in a secret passage, and spent an hour or two looking, before the Aspect showed up. They heard it smashing through one of the secret doors (to make room for it, 2.5-3 feet wide is too small for a 10 ft creature) and got ready. Not much ready time, though Leila quaffed a potion of Bull's Strength, and Gadby used the wand to enlarge both her and Gunther. When the aspect emerged, it got one charge attack against Gunther (which it did decent damage on), before all went to crap. Leila tripped it (Improved Trip and a heavy flail), then critted it for 51 freaking damage (19 natural strength + 4 bulls + 4 rage + 2 enlarge = omg 29 strength), and Gunther hit it for a decent chunk too (though with a nonmagical weapon, didn't do much). It got the chance to cast its epic protection before getting up (protecting it from most of the AoOs), and got off a decent bite against Gunther again. The second round of improved tripping and smashing killed it though. :( Poor boss monster. Leila used its skull to unlock the first abilities of her Skull Lash heavy flail though, and now carries the giant skull around.

PC Name: Marcus
PC Race/Class: Male Human Psion 17
Adventure: transition between Library of Last Resort and King of the Rift.
Location of Death: The docks when they got of the boat.
Catalyst: Running out of Faith Points.
Other Party Members: Kyrion - Male Human Bard/Sublime Cord 8/9 , Rath Male Human Cleric/Radiant Servant of Pelor 7/10, Anaïs - Female elf druid 17, Kromm - Male Half-orc Barbarian/Dragon Shaman/homebrew PrC 6/1/10.

The group didn't pay attention when Darl told them that he would make them pay...and he ambushed them with new allies when they arrived at port after releasing the konwledge of the Order of the Storm.

Under the cover of invisibility Darl, Loris Raknian the Death Knight and Beltorius the Pit Fiend blind-sided them and the heroes tried to recover from the opening strike.

Marcus, who had already pissed off Darl, by resisting an Implosion and a destruction spell and by targetting him in their first encounter. Plus he taunting him a lot when they locked horn on Last Resort. When Darl targetted Marcus with a Destruction spell this time...he wasn't disapointed.

Marcus used is last 2 faith points but still couldn't get a Fort save over 23...

PC Name: Kyrion
PC Race/Class: Male Human Bard/Sublime Cord 8/9
Adventure: transition between Library of Last Resort and King of the Rift.
Location of Death: The docks when they got of the boat.
Catalyst: Being heroic and taking one for the team.
Other Party Members: Kyrion - Male Human Bard/Sublime Cord 8/9 , Rath Male Human Cleric/Radiant Servant of Pelor 7/10, Anaïs - Female elf druid 17, Kromm - Male Half-orc Barbarian/Dragon Shaman/homebrew PrC 6/1/10.

Being affected by both of Beltorius' quickenend fireball, Kyrion had 2 hp left, but in a selfless act he decided to not heal himself and decided to cast a Chain Dispel to soften the ennemies. He dispelled almost every spell on the Darl.

Kyrion then fell to a crushing blow from Loris Raknian, but it enabled the druid to pummel the not anymore electricity resistant Pit Fiend and the not Spell immune Darl...they both fell quickly after.

Both their valourous acts touched their comarades.

They were both True Ressurected after.

Liberty's Edge

PC: Edane, 12th level male elf Druid
Adventure: Spire of Long Shadows
Location of Death: Room with the never ending wormswarms.
Catalyst: Critical hit by the Overworm.

The party was making a second run at defeating the Overworm. This time, all of the character were under the influnce of fly spells. The party moved in and attaked. On the third round of combat, the Overworm rolled a critical on Edane and bit him in half. So much for that stoneskin spell. Elane will not be raised as his player John is moving back to Washington state. Elane will rest in the Hall of Heroes along side Warpig, Karin, and Gear: The lost heroes of my Age of Worms campaign.

This is the 4th death in the Spire of Long Shadows.

PC: Jonas, 6th Cleric (Lathander)/3rd Radiant Servant
Adventure: The Champion's Belt
Location of Death: Waterdeep Arena, 2nd battle
Catalyst: Double-teamed criticals from Pitch Blade

After making short work of the first battle, the heroes may have grown a bit cocky. Pitch Blade charged in, one against the Soulbow, one against the Priest. While the soulbow took a standard move to adjust and blast, the priest took a 5-foot step and safely cast a spell. Next round, both dwarves adjusted forwards and attacked the healer, each critting once with the flaming swords'o'doom. Alas, poor Jonas.

First death so far, although there have been several close calls, including a near TPK versus Zyrzog.

PC Name: Garret Melinkovft - Level 12 Pladin of Kord (Freedom variant for that CG flavour)
Adventure: A Gathering of Winds
Location of Death: True Tomb
Catalyst: Forgetful player + Occulus demon
Long Description:

So our Paladin was being played by a newbie. Well, not quite. He'd had a short experience in a past game, and we'd run off-the-cuff combats for him to get to grips with the system, but in the end, he just forgot stuff.

For some reason, he had to remove his full plate armour. Can't remember if it was swimming or climbing, but he needed not to have that abysmal armour check penalty. Checks made, the party go barging around the place, looking for evil to wallop and loot to steal, when they come across the occulus demon. Just after he declares his intention to charge, the Paladin remembers he forgot to put his armour back on...

The minotaur is the first into combat, bellowing a battle cry and making one hell of a hole in the monstrosity. The Ninja slips into the ethereal plane and gets into position. The Paladin, as ever, is not far behind the minotaur, and charges in, swinging his greatsword with skill and lethal power. The Druid and the Warmage take up their positions at the back of the group, piling their best offensive spells on the horror.

The occulus demon attempts to hit the minotaur, but despite his best efforts [high d20 roll], it is unable to penetrate the minotaur's defense. Enraged, it turns on the human, and rains blow after blow on the Paladin's unprotected body. Despite the best efforts of his comrades, the Paladin's soft flesh is no protection against the power of the demon, and Garret falls...

The moral of this story? Wear the armour you spent all that hard-earned loot buying!

Actually, it turned out that that was the player's final session anyway. He got a new job that conflicted with our gaming time, so the death was conveniently placed.

PC Name: Braegan
PC Race/Class: Moon elf/rogue 3
Adventure: Three Faces of Evil
Location of Death: Horseshoe cavern
Catalyst: Crit with a longbow/poor resource management

An ugly mess involving Climb checks and tanglefoot bags left a pile of badly injured PC's at the bottom and the party's fighter and Braegan the rogue at the top. As those at the bottom attempted to heal and regroup, the fighter threw rocks at the two grimlock archers and Braegan shot at them with her bow... until she was crit. The fighter tried to stop her bleeding three times before she died, never once realizing he had a potion of cure light wounds.

Campaign Ender

PC Names: Linus/Barrack/Cyruss
PC Race/Class: human fighter/dwarf ftr-clr/human cleric
Adventure: Three Faces of Evil
Location of Death: Horseshoe Cavern
Catalyst: Poor management of levitation/bad rolls

So the party made its way back to the horseshoe cavern after reincarnating Braegan. This time the wizard memorized 4 levitation spells to get the party across. One at a time Barrack, Cyruss, and Linus clambored over to the ledge, all the time dealing with the sole grimlock archer on the ledge. Then the barbarian climbed up. Several poor rolls and choosing not to cast defensively left a pile of bleeding bodies at her feet, but she had no way to get to the rogue and wizard on the other ledge. As the bodies start attempting their stabilization checks, Braegan and Twyll decided to leave. They said there was nothing they could do and retreated.

After the fact they asked what they could have done. I said the easiest solution was have the wizard cast his last levitate on Braegan, have her climb across the cieling and then levitate up the bodies to her. Even if they died, at least they'd have the corpses. We discussed it and determined that the Age of Worms is probably not the best fit for this group.

PC Name: Frank Urthadar (male human Evoker 3/Sorcerer 2/Ultimate Magus 8)
Adventure: The Spire of Long Shadows
Location of Death: Halls of Corruption
Catalyst: Destruction from Kelvos the Wormtouched.
Long Description: Frank moved out of the safety of the doorway and dropped some evocation effects on Kelvos and his allies. The corrupted ghaele eladrin then cast destruction and obliterated Frank. In the next moment, however, Frank's ally hit Kelvos with a disintegrate and returned the favor.

PC Name: Leleev, Drow Cleric/Rogue
Location of Death: Free City Arena
Cause of death: Bitten in two by the Apostle

Leleev was a slightly atypical member of her species, and used deception throughout the games to disguise her true appearance. She had already found her missing patrol group in the sewers of the foul city, but knew of a coming doom that the humans would unleash upon the world. Little did she know that the coming doom would be her own. A couple of rounds passed in the fight versus Auric and Khellek, and Leleev moved invisibly towards Auric to engage him. That's when the Aposatle appeared, burrowing up near the greatest combination of champions. Fearing the beasts's girth, Leleev attempted to back off, only to succumb to the dreaded attack of opportunity from the thing's massive size. Already injured from the whipping Tendrils, the thing snapped her in two as she attempted to move away. If only she had worshipped Hextor...

PC: Therian, Dread Necromancer 11
Location: The Black portal into Icociol's tomb
Cause of Death: Eviscerated by the Abyssal Ghoul

Feeling pretty confident with themselves after slaughtering the dreaded 'Ilthane the Black', the party attempted to search for Allustan by going through the Black portal. Therian alone decided to bravely test the portal for traps, and everyone backed away in case he did trigger one. He did not know of the fiendish undead stuck inside the portal, and as he put a hand through the gate to test it, a dessicated hand shot out and punctured him in the vitals. Surprised, he couldn't react as the thing's three other appendages shot out of the portal, ripped him in the vitals, and then grabbed his -10 hp butt into the portal to consume his corpse. None of the other PCs witnessed what killed him as they had backed away from the portal, leaving a sense of dread and horror at the Black gate. I've never seen someone go from max-hit points to -10 in the space of a one round, and I do believe the experience shook up the PCs quite a bit...one of those rare moments of horror that is impossible to duplicate.

PC Name: Lady Aridarye Phylund Brokengulf (female human Aristocrat 1/Harbinger 8/Ranger 1)
Adventure: The Spire of Long Shadows
Location of Death: Halls of Knowledge
Catalyst: Overlapping invocations of the worm.
Long Description: Aridarye had joined the party as a cohort after the death of her son when Prendergast's plan in the Champion's Games came to fruition. She and the party were some of the few survivors of the thousands of wights in Waterdeep, and she is now fervently seeking vengeance against all followers of Kyuss.

While within the ziggurat, the party was assaulted by a trio of swords of Kyuss and a wormcaller. A well-placed wall of fire from the party's halfling spellwarp sniper badly injured the swords of Kyuss, but they healed themselves by moving into the middle of the PCs and dropping invocations of the worm on top of themselves. The layers of damage proved too much for Aridarye to withstand. She has, however, been raised from the dead by the dwarven cleric of Moradin.

PC Name: Jimiath "Jimmy" Firespark (male halfling Rogue 1/Spellwarp Sniper 5/Wizard 7)
Adventure: The Spire of Long Shadows
Location of Death: Halls of Knowledge
Catalyst: Overlapping invocations of the worm.
Long Description: While within the ziggurat, the party was assaulted by a trio of swords of Kyuss and a wormcaller. Jimmy used a well-placed wall of fire to badly injure the undead, but they healed themselves by moving into the middle of the PCs and dropping invocations of the worm on top of themselves. The layers of damage proved too much for Jimmy to withstand. A quick spell from the dwarven cleric allowed Jimmy a second attempt at his saving throw, which allowed him to change the fate of the last round and "survive" the effect which had killed him.

PC Name: Taravin Truesilver (male human Gray Guard 8/Paladin of Honor 5)
Adventure: The Spire of Long Shadows
Location of Death: Halls of Knowledge
Catalyst: Natural 1 on a Fort save against massive damage.
Taravin was sufficiently stout to withstand invocation after invocation, except he failed a Reflex save once and took full damage. In his save against the massive damage from the 54 points of damage, he rolled a 1 and died. The paladin was later raised by the dwarven cleric of Moradin.

Sovereign Court

(After sucessfully finishing Whispering Cairn without any deaths, the group has so far suffered four deaths in the Three Faces of Evil.)

Name: Mathias Burne (Human cleric of Hextor 5)
Adventure: Three Faces of Evil
Location: Grallak Kur's cave in the Caves of Erythnul
Catalyst: hold person, 2 failed saves, & coup-de-grace

Description: The mighty Mathias was able to survive the onslaughts in the Cathedral of Hextor and the Labyrinth of Vecna. But alas, the Caves of Erythnul proved his undoing. What should have been a relatively easy fight turned sour when Grallak Kur's magicks paralysed the young cleric and allowed one the grimlocks to crush him with a morningstar.

Name: Kesh (monk 9)
Adventure: Champion's Belt
Location: Bozal Zahol's lair
Catalyst: mohrg paralysis, worms, a couple of friends.

Description: Kesh had not been with the party long. He had traveled from north of the Yatil mountains all they way to the Free City of Greyhawk where he had befriended a wizard of all things. The two of them were ensared in some sort of plot with a cleric from the city and a yokel from a nearby town rathole called Diamond Lake. The plot seemed to involve a mindflayer, some drow, and ultimately Loris Raknian. Like the whirlwind which he embodied, Kesh found himself swept up in great events and so he had entered the Champion's Games with his unlikely companions. The crowds were astounded by Kesh's speed and dexterity. His favorite tactic was to magically enlarge himself with a ring of spell-storing and then wrap his body around an opponent while the half-orc barbarian (read: yokel) beat on the hapless foe with a greataxe. Preferably the sharp slicey part of the axe.

Kesh was a nice man, polite to friend and foe alike. He treated all with the same measure of respect, right before he floated across the floor in the blink of an eye, jammed your head into his sweaty armpit and began to squeeze. In a way, it was that phenomenal speed which got Kesh into trouble.

The party had just found a nest of horrible undead known as the spawn of Kyuss right there beneath the Arena. After an initially embarassing beginning in which Kesh displayed his speed by running away, the party began to crush their foes inexorably. Kesh raced ahead around a corner to give chase to some fleeing undead (after making 7 Will saves in a row!) when suddenly a horrible cleric of Kyuss stepped out in front of him. A whirling barrier of magical blades appeared all around Kesh and he somersaulted forward (and away from everyone else) to escape it. Immediately after, his body stiffened with immobility as a mohrg caressed him with it's paralyzing tongue.

The situation went rapidly downhill from there, as spawns of Kyuss pressed forward, all eager to drip worms over the helpless monk. One even grabbed him by the head and vomited a bunch of the nasty things right into Kesh's mouth. His companions frantically tried to reach him, but the barrier of blades blocked them and seemed to withstand all attempts to remove it's magic. The mohrg lashed out at Kesh again and again as the worms chewed their way through his intelligence.

A message spell, previously cast by the monk's wizard friend, allowed Kesh to convey his dying wishes. The others agreed that there was nothing that they could do to save his life, but perhaps they could save him from undeath. The cleric and the barbarian struck almost simultaneously. Killing Kesh with their own hands (well, weapons) and robbing the worms of Kyuss of another conquest just moments before that last bit of Kesh's brain was devoured.

The rest of the battered and exhausted party turned and fled for their lives.

The party has not faced questions about why SunBurn now has only four members, for they are busy staring in shock at the just revealed visage of the froghemoth.

This makes for the fourth notch on my DM's belt during this campaign. The player's previous character succumbed to Zyrxog only a few sessions ago.

Okay, not reading anybody else's because I'm still playing in it I wanted to add R.I.P.s for:

PC Names: Athar Moreldenth (Human Wizard 13), Shelter (Human Paladin 13), Heliotrope Silverleaf (Elf Ranger? 13)
Adventure: The Spire of Long Shadows
Location of Death: Some dark place filled with undead.
Catalyst: Negative energy effect from some undead knights.
Long Description: While our group largely walked through most of the adventures to this point fairly unscathed we were completely unprepared for the ruins we found here. We had just lost our druidzilla (due to player loss, not character death) and replaced him with a rogue (new player).

Our pally charged into a room (actually shot into it as a bolt of lightning) filled with armored undead fellows (not waiting for some knowledge checks to tell him that maybe these creatures were immune to electricity) and found himself somewhat trapped. Athar (my character) and Helio tried to extricate him to no avail.

The creatures kept bashing their swords against their shields creating waves of negative energy - draining us to the last. Athar lost 50ish HP in one go, taking him *way* negative and the other two lasted just a round or two longer.

The rogue looted the bodies and reported back to Tenser. Typical.

The party has been joined by a human cleric, half-orc barbarian, and a half-something-or-other mage of some sort. We are somewhat better able to hold our own these days but had built up quite a history over those 13 levels (about a year of play).

Character: Solomon Fetch, Half-Orc Ranger/Scout, Charismaticly Challenged and headstrong anti-hero.
Location of Death: Icosiol's True Tomb
Cause of Death: Undivided attention from Auggeric

Despite having lost the majority of his possessions to the horrific Elder Black Pudding in the rooms above, Solomon bravely accompanied his Hextor worshipping compatriots all the way through the ancient tomb they had discovered. His trapfinding skills were invaluable for manuvering through the dungeon's various demenses, and in combat he was a monster. It was this prowess that earned Auggeric's undivided attention in the final room. Unsure of the nature of their opponent, the heroes suffered as their protective wards were snuffed out by the powerful magics of the demon. Suddenly, he was seperated, up in the air from the rest of his companions, and in a matter of moments, Solomon was cut down by the thing's horrible blasts of energy and it's wicked (DM substituted) Anarchic Greatsword. His bloodied body floated slowly to the ground like a fallen leaf as the thing mocked them; this was the second time they had faced the demon, having previously almost been TPK'd if not for a timely teleport away. Solomon's companions endured a long, bloody fight in the name of Hextor until at least they reaped vengeance upon Solomon's Slayer.

PC Name: Siberys

PC Race/Class: Dragonwrought Kobold Ninja 4
Adventure: Three Faces of Evil
Location of Death: Grallak Kur's chamber
Catalyst: Criticaled by Great-Axe (coupled with low HP.)

Other Party Members:
Sealamin Bachnar, Dwarf Cleric 3/Fighter 1/ aspiring Hammer of Moradin
Berek Darkmountain, Half-Elf Barbarian 4 (Player not present)
Drenn, Gnome Wizard
Proteus, Psionicist 4/ aspiring Master of Many Forms
Ailur, Human Druid 4/ aspiring Catlord (Player not present)

Wiki for the game here: ageofworms.wikispaces.com

First actual death in the campaign. :(

The party had gone into Erythnuls caverns, led by Proteus and Siberys.
WHile Proteus made a distarction, Siberys maneuvered to sneak-attack the Grimlock leader.

Unfortunately, his sneak-attack didn't kill the leader, and the leader won initative, who managed to critical with his great-axe for 25 points! (Siberys was already wounded and down 5 HP, from his max of 19.)

PC Race/Class: Human Cleric 6 / Morninglord of Lathander 2
Adventure: Hall of Harsh Reflections
Location of Death: On way back from illithid lair
Catalyst: shooting into grapple + grappler supreme

Other Party Members:
Dwarf Warblade 7 (wielding the cursed sword of berserking, not aware of its curse)
Halfling Rogue 3/Swashbuckler 4
Halfling Sharpshooter 2/Cleric 4
Human Wizard 8
Human Warlock 7

The entrance to the illithid lair was located in the ancient part of the lower level of Waterdeep severs, and required some wandering around to find. On the way back the leading cleric botched his survival check to find the right path, and managed to lead the party into a huge room, with underroof opening leading to the behir lair.

The leading cleric was cherry picked from the floor by an awakened monstrocity.

Since only the enlarged warblade was able to reach the serpent with his melee weapon, the rest of the party decided to start shooting into grapple, on the basis that without taking that chance their cleric is as good as dead. Unfortunately, both rogue and warlock managed to hit the constricted cleric (twice, plus failed save on sickening blast).

Warblade managed to hit a full-PowerAttack critical hit on behir, only to fail a will save a second later and succumb to the sword curse (berserk+kill_nearest).

In the midst of inter-party fight that ensued the unfortunate cleric left this world in order to join his divine patron in the everbright meadows of afterlife.

The behir did not maange to digest him properly, as he promptly died to a wall of fire damage 0.1s later.

P.S. I so hoped for some obituaries from the zerker-sword fight. Unfortunately the warblade ate some high damage subdual hits from his camarades, and only managed to reduce party mage to 30% of his hit points in a single full-PA raging strike.

PC Name: Lady Aridarye Phylund Brokengulf (female human Aristocrat 1/Harbinger 9/Ranger 1)
Adventure: The Spire of Long Shadows
Location of Death: The Harbinger
Catalyst: prismatic spray.
Long Description: The party brought the fight to the Harbinger of Worms and were doing well. However, the lich ended up with a good angle and bathed the party in a prismatic spray. Aridarye caught a green ray and failed the Fortitude save. She has since been restored to life.

PC Name: Thoril Songsteel (male human Thug 14)
Adventure: The Spire of Long Shadows
Location of Death: The Harbinger
Catalyst: prismatic spray.
Long Description: The party brought the fight to the Harbinger of Worms and were doing well. However, the lich ended up with a good angle and bathed the party in a prismatic spray. Thoril caught an indigo ray and failed the save. He randomly popped into the Plane of Negative Energy with no means of surviving there. He, and all gear, was lost.

LoL - was referring to the "Dr Death" of the STAP Obits thread, who now and again is so kind as to tally the death total by Chapter. I'm hoping to beckon him here to summarize the Age of Worms as well.

Sovereign Court RPG Superstar 2009 Top 32

PC Name: Azrael
PC Race/Class: Female Tiefling Rogue 5 / Assassin 2
Adventure: Hall of Harsh Reflections
Location of Death: Zyrxogs Laboratory
Catalyst: Advanced Octopins Rend attack

After a harrowing ordeal in the Sodden Hold, the party cleared the Screamers and Drow guardpost, but their attitude with the Spirit Naga started a battle, and raised a general alarm.

The following battle with the Drow (which even had time to erect a makeshift barricade, and wait on the party with hand crossbows at the ready) saw most of their buffs dispelled, and which was the first strike against the party. They pressed on, afraid Zyrxog might run, and took down the first Octopins with ease. The Stone mind was still up when the party fighter "triggered" the advanced octopin, so the party was caught between destroying the brain and the Octopin battle.

Our brave assassin tumbled into flanking position, and did enough damage to the aberration to make it decide to "remove" her. Due to her not having not the best AC in the book with practically no enhancement spells left, both hit, and together with the rend damage dropped her from full HP straight to -16.

Her torn body was patched together in the local temple of Wee Jas only hours later, and the now-angry group slaughtered poor Zyrxog, who rolled horrifically bad on his Mind Blast stun durations.

Name: Helm
Race/Class: Human/fighter
Adventure: Whispering cairn
Location: Ferral Dog
Catalyst: Kullen's Greataxe

A bar fight broke out when the PC's confronted Kullen's gang over their dealings with Smenk and Filge. Kullen scored a critical on Helm taking him to -16hp.

Name: Taman
Race/Class: human/sorcerer
Adventure: Three Faces of Evil
Location: Temple of Bane (Hextor)
Catalyst: Charging Dire boar

The PC's ended up in a huge fight here against almost all the defenders of the temple.

Name: Vlad
Race/class: human/monk
Adventure: Three Faces of Evil
Location: Faceless Ones laboratory
Catalyst: Giant centipede

Vlad tumbled into the room to flank the centipede and reach the Faceless One. After being left on 5hp he decided to tumble out... and failed. On the giant centipedes turn Vlad was left on -13hp.

Name: Mr Tiago
race/class: human/wizard
Adventure: Three Faces of Evil
Location: outside the faceless Ones' laboratory
Catalyst: Lightning bolt

the faceless one knew the PC's were nearby and cast numerous spells (including summoning the centipede). When the PC's still didn't show he readied a lightning bolt at one door. Kethra, the rogue, opened the door and evaded the bolt but Tiago behind her was killed outright.

Name(s): Elyra, Kethra & Little Tooth
Races/classes: moon elf fighter, human rogue & gnome druid
Adventure: Three Faces of Evil
Location: Grimlock caverns
Catalyst: grimlock barbarian

both PC's decided to fly up to the higher of the horshoe caverns using potions of gaseous form. for some reason Elyra decided to stay in gas form while Kethra (a little confused now) tried to take down a grimlock archer without flanking or sneak attack. She managed but could not kill the barbarian who killed both her and Elyra then killed Little Tooth as he tried to flee with no spells left. TPK since Vlad had died earlier..... One tough AP

Liberty's Edge

Names: Az, Bel, and Gus

Classes: fighter/dervish, hexblade, and psychic warrior (respectively)

Cause of Death: Madtooth The Hungry

Adventure: The Champion's Belt

This was a rough fight for my crew. It very well could have ended as a TPK. Apart from these three fatalities, Rath, the barbarian and Cora, the rogue/cleric were down in the negatives and a round away from certain death when the UberFrog was finally dispatched.

How it happened: When the party saw Madtooth, the first few that had highest initiative moved as far back as they could and pulled out missile weapons. After a few well-placed arrows pissed him off, Madtooth lept forward and sucked in the barbarian with his tongue.

The party was very reluctant to engage in melee. They continued to fire arrows from a distance, except for the rogue/cleric, who attempted to flank and sneak attack - ending up with a tentacle upside her head.

Round 2 involved a few more arrow-shots and Madtooth grappling the psychic warrior and the fighter/dervish with tentalces and attempting to get the favored soul with its tongue. The favored soul avoided this with a near-miraculous opposed grapple-check.

Meanwhile, the barbarian was trying to cut himself out of Madtooth's stomach while stomach acid and crushing damage started to add up quickly.

A few more arrow shots began the next round, the dervish and psychic warrior were drawn into madtooth's maw and took even more damage, both of which were in no condition to endure any more punishment. The barbarian was in little better shape, he fumbled his axe and dropped it somewhere in the stomach. In an act of shear desperation, he attempted to bite his way out of the stomach.

The rogue/cleric, in a foolish attempt to save those being digested, indicated that she was going to "jump into its mouth." She was bitten and swallowed, dropping her to the negatives as well. The Wilder and the Favored soul hit Madtooth with Concussion Blast and Deific Vengeance, which finished the amphibian once and for all.

The hexblade was the dervish's twin brother. We had been playing a house-rule that they were "Corsican Twins" (that one felt the other's suffering). When Az was digested, Bel failed his Willl Save big-time. He became a blithering basket-case. The wilder took it upon herself to put him out of his misery, using Mind Thrust to make it look like he had some sort of seizure.

The barbarian and rogue/cleric were rescued from the gullet, at -8 and -9 hit points respectively. The favored soul healed them - after which the barbarian recovered his axe and proceeded to hack on the froghemoth corpse - just for good measure.

This tied for the previous most deadly encounter for the party, which was the Wind Warrior fight in the Whispering Cairn.

PC Name: "Thog" - Evandur Thog Buckman, Half-Orc Fighter4/Scout3
Adventure: The Hall of Harsh Reflections
Location of Death: The Sodden Hold - The Cells
Catalyst: Double critting dopplegangers
Long Description: After bearing the brunt of the mimics upstairs (Including lots of shouts of "Arggh! Help! Sticky boxes!) poor Thog was the first to dive into Martal and Regim's cell as it became readily apparent that they weren't what they originally seemed. Valiantly (trying) to swing his halberd in the enclosed space to protect his friends Thog was soon victim of a double crit, one from each of the dopplegangers.

...One reincarnate later...

PC Name: "Thog" - Evandur Thog Buckman, Mountain Orc Fighter4/Scout3
Adventure: The Hall of Harsh Reflections
Location of Death: Zyrxog's Lair - The Laboratory
Catalyst: Advanced Octopin, high damage and a rend.
Long Description: Thog, still adjusting to his new, more orcy physique was enjoying smashing things and being bigger and stronger. This however was his downfall. Eager to explore the strage laboratory he was the first to want to go poke at the tank. One lot of high damage and a rend later he was on the floor dying. He was healed, only to stand up and have the same thing happen to him again. Poor Thog had no luck against the large aberration!

..He didn't answer the next call to be reincarnated, I think his soul decided it was time to have a little lie down!

...and another
Name: Rizzen
Race/Class: Drow rogue 5
Adventure: Encounter at Blackwall Keep
Location: Lizard Marsh
Catalyst: while travelling into the lizard marsh the PC's fought off goblins, ghouls, a ghast, monitor lizards and lizard folk... then there was a huge constrictor. It was hiding in an area of deep bog when Sgt. Briar (the groups fighter) stepped too close. Briar and the cleric were both on negative hp's in a few rounds while the sorcerer was hitting the snake with ranged spells. Rizzen used darkness to slow the snake when it turned on him. The sorcerer was able to heal the other two, but by then Rizzen had been caught and his 14hp didn't last long (one hit actually).

Thats now 12 kills in two and a half chapters with 2 TPK's.

Aaah, and what a glorious deaths they were too...

Scarab Sages

Sadly, the entire party bought it when fighting The Faceless One and his minions-they somehow managed to turn the Alip and deal with the cultists to begin with...but when The Faceless One came around...and started summoning, the party was at a disadvantage-when the Alip returned afterwards...they had little chance.

So...the list of those defeated by the Age of Worms grows..

Jovan-level 4 human cleric of St Cuthbert
Alissandra-level 4 human cleric of St Cuthbert
Nuanisne-level 4 elven ranger
Belmont-level 4 human rogue

RIP

Name: Lashonna, a Blessed Angel, Maralee, and Kyuss
Adventure: Dawn of a New Age
Location of Death: atop the new Spire of Long Shadows, Alhaster
Catalyst: got sick of spending every round healing, but failed to put enough smack-down on the (very well buffed) PC's
Long Description:
See my posts under "Kyuss Defeated", and "Age of Worms Champions" ;-)

p.s. two blessed angels actually survived, and teleported away (far, far away)...

George? Did the cleric fall down George? I can't reach the bony dragon George ...

After MANY close near-death counters, here is the first one in my campaign:

PC: Breeg the Grim, half-orc 6th level fighter/3rd level exotic weaponmaster
Adventure: Champion's Belt
Location of Death: Arena
Catalyst: Spiked chain sundered, killed by axeattacks by dwarf from Pitch Blade.

Description: I augmented the members of Pitch Blade. I made them 6th level fighters and 5th level barbarians. They lost the exotic weapon profeciency with the bastard swords and instead used adamantite great axes. They also had improved bull rush and Combat brute (Complete Warrior) feats. After sundering Breeg's spiked chain, the raging dwarf hit twice with his great axe. Breeg the weapon master, drew his secondary weapon, a masterwork longsword and did minimal damage to the dwarf, who killed him next round. Combat Brute is a great feat for a guy with an adamantite weapon.

PC: Larien, Psychic 1
Adventure: Whispering Cairn
Location of Death: Central tomb puzzle-room
Catalyst: Wrong place, wrong time

He was trying to stay away from the acid beetles, and failed

PC: Celder, Rogue 1
Adventure: Whispering Cairn
Location of Death: Central tomb puzzle-room
Catalyst: Wrong place, wrong time

Acid Beetle's eat first level rogues

PC: Schlag, Bruiser 3
Adventure: Three Faces of Evil
Location of Death: Horseshoe Cavern
Catalyst: He was in the lead

Scouting ahead and not perceiving the raging, barbarian grimlock who drank her potion of cat's grace and bull's strength causes death pretty quickly

PC: Sir Valen, Holy Warrior 3
Adventure: Three Faces of Evil
Location of Death: Horseshoe Cavern
Catalyst: One on One fight + unlucky crit

Aforementioned barbarian grimlock got a lucky crit and dropped this guy

First death in the campaign, The Whispering Cairn. The earth elemental scores a critical hit and maximum damage versus the monk, Grasshoppa. Bug guts everywhere! :-)

Dark Archive

We just started AoW last night, and I've got a few for the tally.

PC's: Bourbon (Dwarf Crusader 1), Pilsner (Dwarf Barbarian 1), Drake (Dragon Shaman 1)
Adventure: Whispering Cairn
Location: The True Tomb
Catalyst: Wind Warriors

This encounter killed all but the party Cleric, Curamus (Human Cleric 1).

The party started crossing one of the bridges in a close together clump. The Wind Warriors show up, and both sides face off and roll init. The WW's start off with their sonic attacks damaging most of the party. Pilsner dives into the fray and starts dealing great damage to one of the WW's, but when the WW attacks back he hits twice for almost max damage, and dropping him to -11. The others in the party have a really hard time hitting the WW's high AC and dodge, but get a few hits in. Bourbon tries to bull-rush the WW's off of the bridge, which worked at first, but of course they can fly right back. The guys are taking lots of nasty hits, but Curamus is a really good min/maxed healer. They manage to finish off the WW Pilsner damaged and flank the other. The remaining WW takes a swing at Curamus dropping him to negative hit points, and a swing at Drake which critically hits and takes him well below -10. The WW full attacks Bourbon dropping him to -9, and next round he dies too. Victorious, the WW withdraws from combat. Curamus manages to stabalize, and hours or days later regains consciousness and crawls away to nurse his wounds and plan the next step.

So I probably should have given the PC's their XP from earlier in the dungeon before they got to this fight, because with an extra level each they definately would have been able to come through the fight. But they were able to deal with the rest of the adventure so far without too much trouble (the acid beatle swarms were a real challenge), so I thought they could do it. The real downfall was one round of great rolls by the WW against Pilsner, the one character who really had the ability to damage them.

Add Seven more Player Character deaths to Dragotha & Co. Read about it on my thread...

that's the Killer GM thread by the way:)

Scarab Sages

While not technically in the Age of Worms - yet - I started my players in the Mad God's Key, with hints to head to Diamond Lake. Sunday we suffered our first fatality:

Landon Hellgate; 1st level Hellbred Binder – slain in battle with the ‘Blessed One’ in the Tomb of Blood Everflowing.

The Exchange RPG Superstar 2010 Top 32

Not quite a kill, but so close.

The party were down under the Arena and fighting Bozal Zahol, the cleric of Kyuss. They're 12th so I'd pumped him up to 14 and given him the half-fiend template and a pile of spells from the Book of Vile Darkness. The Kyuss spawn were all 10HD Large monstrosities and everyone was having fun.

He sat behind his anti-life shell while the party mopped up the undead, summoning beasts and trying to rip out hearts with Heartclutch. At that point one of the party clerics activated a funky item and went through the Antilife shield.

(It's my first session with these characters and I'd just said that as long as their wealth was below the guidelines it'd be fine. Winging it is fun).

Anyway - he now had the Undead subtype. Now, Half Fiend Bozal is no idiot, and I'd given him a Heal as well as a Harm, so pow - 140 damage. With all the temporary hitpoints and stuff the PC ended up at -7 and as undead he'd no trouble with massive damage but the party were more than a little shook up :)

Tomorrow the CR19 Half Farspawn Froghemoth!

Actually, undead (and any other critter with a - CON score) are outright destroyed at 0 hit points - so you do indeed have a confirmed kill carborundum. ^_^
