Character - Warforged - Warblade/Bloodstorm Blade/Blademaster
Adventure - Champions' Belt (like I said, the bodies are piling
up :-0)
Cause of Death - Too much Ruby Golem

Long Description - The golems I added were proving to be a tough opponent for the party and they never manged to do much with them.

They slew Khellick and the Psion/Cleric NPC I created for the Warband and were down to just Auric and the golems. Using a strategy someone else used on this board (sorry I don;t remember who) mass suggestion forced a few of the characters to surrender in round 1. Another character was in the negatives so at this point half the part was down and they were outnumbered.

The Warforged was face to face against two Ruby Golems and knew that IF he could get past them he may have been able to seerly injure Auric. He also knew he was very hurt.

Instead of surrendering he chose to push past them and was subject to an AoW from each one. The first Golem missed but the second one scored a critical hit and brought the mighty Warforged Warblade down. After that the last two characters surrendered.

First 2 character deaths of the campaign...

Character Name: Squire Brick, Half-orc Falchion wielding Fighter 3
Adventure: 3 Faces of Evil
Location: Grimlock Caverns
Cause of Death: Critical by greataxe

The party was ambushed by a horde of grimlocks and I rolled really well on the party. I confirmed a critical with a greataxe on an already wounded Brick, doing 44 points of damage to him in one swing! That x3 is vicious!

Character Name: Leopold, Human 2-weapon Fighter 3
Adventure: 3 Faces of Evil
Location: Grimlock Caverns
Cause of Death: Critical by greataxe

As I said, I rolled really well. I did 38 points of damage on Leopold, who had only 20 hps left.

Both characters are now playing a paladin and a cleric, respectively.

Another death in the campaign (3 so far).

Character Name: Healey, Cleric 4/Paladin 3 of St. Cuthbert
Adventure: Champion's Belt
Location: Arena
Cause of Death: Critical greataxe by one of dwarves from Pitchblade

I re-statted PF versions of the dwarven barbarians and their fight with the party has been one of the most challenging so far. Healey tried to jump in the fight and help the main fighter, who was being surrounded by the two enlarged raging dwarves (my party consists of 6 character so I gave the dwarves enlarge person potions). He took the AoO and managed to wound one of the dwarves. He responded with a threat and confirmation of a critical with power attack with his greataxe for a total of 73 points of damage, splitting Healey in two! The fight continued for about 7 more rounds before the party emerged triumphant. The party used Healey's money to Raise Dead, but his return was short-lived.

Character Name: Healey, Cleric 4/Paladin 3 of St. Cuthbert
Adventure: Champion's Belt
Location: Arena
Cause of Death: Petrification by Gorgon

In the next round of Arena battles, I had the party encounter an encounter of my making, consisting of a fiendish minotaur with 4 fighter levels, 2 regular minotaurs, and a gorgon. The gorgon ran up and breathed on the party. Good ol' Healey rolled a 1 on his save. Two rounds later, the gorgon breathed again and Healey rolled a 2 on his save, making his petrification permanent! The player running Healey decided to bring someone new in and leave Healey as a statue in the arena.

*Character Name: "Lucky" Nimblefeet, halfling priest
Adventure: Right after TFoE
Location: streets of Diamond Lake
Cause of Death: Critical hit by zombie Kullen after getting hit in friendly fire (elven ranger rolled natural 1 and hit friend).

Reincarnated as a tiefling afterward.

*Character Name: Rafael, sorcerer
Adventure: HoHR
Location: back alleys of the "Free City"
Cause of Death: Beheaded (Death Attack - 3.5) by an Angel of Death sent by Zyrxog (flying assassin based on X-Men's Archangel) while being harrassed by an angry mob. Sometimes the dice are against you!

RPG Superstar Season 9 Top 16

Character Name: Isaac (Human Cleric Level 3)
Adventure: Whispering Cairn
Location: Just outside the entrance
Cause of Death: Kullen chopped the enlarged cleric right into -12. Smenk had bought the rights to the Whispering Cairn after being tipped off by Titwoad, and rather than agree to pay 25% commission to him on all loot found within, the party tried to force their way in. Kullen changed their minds.

Character Name: Ulfgar (Dwarven Paladin Level 4)
Adventure: TFoE
Location: Grimlock Caverns
Cause of Death: Critical hit by Grimlock Chieftain with that dreaded greataxe. Rolled 52 damage, and cut the Paladin in twain. One half fell down at the feet of the others who were waiting for him to create a beachhead so they could ascend that 10 foot cliff and begin the fight. Instead, they fled the caverns in terror.

Tonight in the final of The Shadow of Long Spire

The Overworm swallowed the tempest whole, killing her.

The lich opened the round with Prismatic Spray, four 5's were rolled on the D8s, 3 failed fort saves, 3 Stone characters, 1 failed will save (cohort sent to another plain)

The other 3 dimension Doored away carrying 1 stone statue with them. The Lich smashes the stone cleric and stone wizard left behind.

Character: Siegfried - Fighter 6
Adventure: The Hall of Harsh Reflections
Cause of Death: Doppelganger guards in the mirror maze.

Siegfried was the last one standing, but the rest of the party was unconscious and stabilized. Unfortunately, 2 of the 3 guards were still up (one had already died of a crushed larynx thanks to the Critical Hit deck) and they were double teaming him. Siegfried went to negatives and just couldn't stop bleeding. The rest of the party were taken to Telakin's room to be dealt with at a later time.

*Character Name: Chamer, half-elf priest
Adventure: HoHR Finale
Location: Cathedral of the Mind
Cause of Death: Got his brain extracted by a hungry Zyrxog. Ouch!

Character: Balok, human rogue 8
Adventure: HoHR
Location: Balcony above the Cathedral of the Mind

After dealing with the Vrock, the party decided to check out the balcony. They had already been there on a previous day prior to setting off any alarms, so they didn't expect the mind flayer to be there waiting for them. The two octopins won initiative and closed quickly and the party was stuck in melee with them while Zyrxog pelted them with spells from above the pool. The cleric escaped, but the rogue died. The rest are unconscious and stable, prisoners of the mind flayer and soon to be brain dinner (especially the psionic monk) unless they do something quick.

Greg

Sczarni

TPK in the Mines outside town (not sure of the adventure title...just after Whispering Cairn)

All Witches, all Level 3.

Ravana, Elf, party healer

Gargomel, Halfling, party "rogue" (honorable mention, he just played dead and fled when possible)

Ellis, Human, party "ranger"

Wheeler, Human, elementalist - mostly fire

Topher, Half-Orc, party "meleeist"

So, up until now, we were playing rather intelligently and cautiously. We managed to survive the Whispering Cairn, several lopsided fights, and Filge without too much hassle. Paranoia and longspears saved the day several times.

For some reason, though, we lost our brains when it came time to go after the Ebon Triad.

Firstly, we sent Ravana, Topher, and Gargomel down first into the elevator. Not a horrible idea, with the talker, traps guy, and melee tank, but not so great with the healer and "rogue" exposed to unknown dangers. Down below, Ravana tried to Intimidate the Tiefling guards into submission, failing. A fight broke out, with one Tiefling making it to the entrance to The Citadel of Gorum.

That led to a large-scale fight in the elevator room against Tiefling guards, human cultists, and a BUNCH of skeletons. No big deal, really, until Wheeler dropped the last 80 feet or so down the elevator shaft (he & Ellis had climbed down the chain after the rest made it down), knocking himself unconscious.

Not too big a deal, since Ravana was right close to the fallen witch, and able to cure moderate wounds. Unfortunately, that healed him for 6 HP (rolling 1 & 2 on the d8's, a trend for the evening) and kept the AoE guy out of the fight for still another round.

After much resource expenditure, the skeletons, etc. were put down, and we moved into the rest of the room. Given the marching order of "Topher, then the rest of us", Ravana (me) then proceeded to walk directly into the next room, stupidly forgetting to keep the meat-shield in front of my squishy Elf body. One angry boar later, and I was almost dropped.

More resources get spent, but the piggy gets dropped. Now, everyone's running on fumes, mostly, but we decide to press on. Searches turn up some nice treasure, and we're feeling flush with success. Then, we walk into a big room with all kinds of baddies standing up on a balcony, just waiting for our dumb butts to walk in.

So, what do we do?

That's right, walk into the killbox. Only a timely obscuring mist prevents us from eating lots and lots of arrows, but between the ranged attacks, failure on Ellis & Topher's parts to roll higher than a 6 on attacks, and general exposure, we all get dead.

Ravana turns on his allies, once captured and interrogated, becoming a new lieutenant for Ms. Badass Gorumite, while Gargomel hides, disguised as a KO'd cultist until he can skeedadddle.

The rest go under the knife, replacing the lost skeletons eventually, and we make new PC's to take on the rest of the AP. New, not-all-witches PC's, it should be noted. I can't wait to wail on that Gorumite with my new paladin soon!

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Character: Kip - Monk 7 / Fist of Zuoken 1
Adventure: Tomb of Horrors side-trek after the Hall of Harsh Reflections
Cause of Death: Tumbled head-first through the green devil's open maw.

I had decided a while ago that since most of my players are relatively new to D&D (all started within the last 12 years), I wanted them to do a side-trek through Tomb of Horrors to set up the reveal near the end when Tenser (aka Manzorian) reveals to them the location of a sphere of annihilation. Little did I know that it would end up being so memorable. They made the spot roll early on to read the inscription on the mosaic floor, and it said, in part, to "avoid the green" or something similar.

When they thought the shrouded archway led only to a trap, they decided to try the green devil. When the monk decided that "avoid the green" meant to not touch the green devil's face but rather to tumble head first into the blackness, well, it was all pretty much decided. I had him roll his tumble against the DC to tumble through an opponents square (25) and he beat it handily. So, one monk through into oblivion.

The wizard decided to follow, but not being a tumbler, he decided to take it slowly. First his leg. "Your leg goes numb" (cause it ain't there anymore). Next his arm. "Your arm goes numb also". Then he backs up only to fall backward realizing he has no arm or leg anymore.

At that point I asked the monk to hand me his character sheet. They went back to Greyhawk (via a teleport provided by the clerics of Pelor - their sponsors for this little side jaunt) and got the wizard's limbs regenerated.

After meeting up with the monk's replacement (a dwarven defender) they have decided to head back.

I think this worked out better than I expected. When they are sent to retrieve the sphere at the end of the adventure, I suspect it will be a very memorable moment.

The acid beetle swarm knocked out and then dissolved the DMPC I had in the group, my poor little halfing rogue named Digger. He was mute (so I wouldn't have to have spoken, and therefore influential, input).

He was a tragic character with a horrible ending.

But, I am also relieved of having to play a DMPC.

Same swarm also killed the druid's animal companion wolf. Sizzle....

I must ask: Are the person who used to post as Phrennzy on the WoTC boards?

I am the same poster from the WotC boards, thanks for remembering me!

The party entered Sodden Hold and fought their way to the water elevator room. Confronted with a puzzling shaft partially filled with water, the druid wild shaped into a shark and swam down alone. (Tsk tsk. Why do they always split up?) A failed spot check later and the giant octopus was upon him, striking and grappling. Every attack struck home, and despite breaking the grapple and trying to swim away, the druid was re-grappled and crushed. The octopus spent the next 6 rounds chewing on the druid's corpse before the party came en masse and slew the monster. The druid's corpse was beyond a raise dead, so they opted for a reincarnate.

Poof! The dead half elf druid becomes a living gnome druid. (He was hoping to be reincarnated as a bugbear.) After I explained that he should not kill himself simply because of game stats in order to try and get a new body, he made peace with it, and now plans on riding his new wolf companion into battle.

Ha, You honored me by including my bit about my Ric Flair inspired monk/rogue as part of your sig. Its a shame that My Little Pony isnt included as an avatar choice here!

A TPK, sadly…

Character Name: Rûn Stoutback (Dwarven Cleric of Shelyn, level 3)
Adventure: The Three Faces of Evil
Location: the arena of Zon-Kuthon (aka the battle temple of Hextor, but in Golarion)
Cause of Death: Coup de grace by Kendra

Character Name: Variu Viteri (Human tattooed sorcerer [orc bloodline], level 3)
Adventure: The Three Faces of Evil
Location: the arena of Zon-Kuthon (aka the battle temple of Hextor, but in Golarion)
Cause of Death: Theldrick channeling negative energy

Character Name: Ronjo (Half-Orc Alchemist [beastmorph], level 3)
Adventure: The Three Faces of Evil
Location: the arena of Zon-Kuthon (aka the battle temple of Hextor, but in Golarion)
Cause of Death: Theldrick channeling negative energy again

The PCs fell into the trap in the temple of Zon-Kuthon/Hextor and ended facing 2 fanatic Kuthites, 5 Tiefling guards, 2 zombies boosted by desecrate, Kendra, Garras, and Theldrick. They could have tried to run away and bashed down the door that would not have resisted their heavy weapons (greataxe and eaarthbreaker) but, by the time it became obvious they were going nowhere, they were unfortunately already spread too thin and scattered throughout the room, doing their best to contain the assaults of the cult. They got slowly overwhelmed until they fell, but not without taking some of their enemies with them.

Rûn was the first to fall after demonstrating a fine dwarven resilience. She had to be stunned, dazed, hit many times before she fell to Kendra's bleeding touch. Isolated and surrounded by enemies, she was then coup-de-grace'd by Kendra with her spiked chain. A bloody mess…

Variu fell not long after when Theldrick, seeing the PCs' strengths flailing, channeled negative energy, despite being surrounded by his minions. A second channel and Variu had died in the arena.

Ronjo proved more resilient with his orcish heritage, but the third channeling of negative energy was the end of him.

The PCs can find solace in the fact that Theldrick killed all but one of his minions in his spamming negative channeling on the battle field. Not that he cared since, as followers of Zon-Kuthon, he thinks they must have reveled in the pain…

Sadly, in this parallel universe, it seems that the Age of Worms will eventually come to be and that the writhing will take over Golarion. I wish I had toned things down a bit more and the PCs had survived, but it was difficult to correct on the fly without making it obvious that I was cheating.

Sovereign Court

Character Name: Claire, lvl 3 human ranger

Adventure: Whispering Cairn

Location: Festering Dog tavern

Cause of Death: One shouldn't bounce severed arms off of Kullens head and expect him to not show you his greataxe.

Character Name: Laucian,
Adventure: Champion's Belt
Location: Shrine of Kyuss
Cause of Death: Bozal Zahol.

Bozal, buffed to the teeth, held everyone off with his anti-life shell. (Let that be a lesson, keep Dispel Magic available). His Spell Resistance likewise stymied everyone. When combat was finally entered, he was particularly devastating with his unholy club. Three whacks and the Dire Lion shaped Druid was down and bleeding. Then came the conundrum. Does Bozal beat the animal companion to death? Does he risk the AoO and trip from the wolf to rush the rogue and Slay Living? Will the cleric of Pelor run over to heal the lion, and we're back to square one?

Time to sacrifice to Kyuss, and with a final WHACK, the druid is slain.

Unfortunately for Bozal, the damn rogue charged with his spear and crit, right in the heart. A final sacrifice to the worm god.

This is the second death for the druid - I wonder what he'll be reincarnated as this time?

Character Name: Keveth
Adventure: Three Faces of Evil
Location: The Dark Cathedral
Cause of Death: The Ebon Aspect

Down a player already due to a last minute cancellation, the party engaged the Ebon Aspect, not knowing what to expect. Keveth, a fifth level fighter/rogue, managed to keep it away from his friends for a little while, but after a brave, and very damage charge, it managed to hit him with two claws and a bite, taking him down before anyone had a chance to do anything about it.

We had our first death last night, and we would have had a few more, but have been using hero point rule from the APG, which has saved a few characters.

Character: Bjorne, level 3 human rogue
Adventure: Three Faces of Evil
Location: Chapel of Vecna
Cause of Death: A lightning bolt from the Faceless One

The rogue tried to sneak into the room where the Faceless One and a surviving Acolyte were waiting. They spotted him and the Faceless One unleashed a lightning bolt. He had evasion, but failed his save and got dropped. It didn't kill him out right, but his companions weren't able to get to him in time to save him from dying, and he had spent his hero points earlier.

My group started the AP at the EatBK, and they all have died (all but 1 character - the Bard) in the Arena in the CB module.

PC Name: Sir Octopussy, Former Ilithid Fighter/Paladin (deceased as a Human Paladin 10)
Adventure: Champion's Belt
Location of Death: Arena
Catalyst: A hungry Froghemoth
Long Description: As soon as the combat started, the Paladin jumped in front of the beast to show the beast the power of his faith. After the first round which the beast was surprised (due to being exposed to clarity after being kept inside it's closed cage), he lost his initiative roll, and on the beast's first attack, it grappled the poor Paladin, who ended up on the beast's stomach. After trying several times to escape it's guts via damaging or grappling back to it's mouth, the brave Paladin ended-up dieing from bludgeoning and acid damage, leaving no way for a raise dead spell.

Sir Octopussy was an Ilithid who have eaten a 1st lvl Paladin Brains, developing a conflict of intelects in the process, Despite being an ilithid, he always roleplayed as an L/G character who though we was actually a Paladin (very funny moments). After having an epiphany moment when he had to choose between killing Zyrzog and all his girynes, embracing his Paladin side, or giving up his faith to embrace his nature, by choosing the first option, Helm (his deity) changed his form to a Human Paladin 8th.

PC Name: Betsy, Dryder Sorcerer 2 lvl
Adventure: Champion's Belt
Location of Death: Arena
Catalyst: Grapple from the Froghemoth
Long Description: After the Froghemoth swallowed the Paladin, it went to the largest creature available. The dryder was able to do some great ammount of dmg to the beast trough use of True Strike, but ended up being grappled by the creature, who could not swallow it since the dryder was only one size category smaller. With constant constricting dmg from the grapple, and additional dmg from attacks with the other tentacle and the tongue, dryder's death was just a matter of time, thanks for the +35 grapple check the Froghemoth had (this is a thing I would change on this combat... No way a simple 9 lvl char can overcome such a high grapple check).

PC Name: Cristinary, Doppleganger 8th lvl
Adventure: Champion's Belt
Location of Death: Arena
Catalyst: Froghemoth attacks
Long Description: After doing some serious damage to the Froghemoth with a longbow during his battle with the Dryder, as soon as the beast got in melee range, the poor Doppleganger stood no chance against the beast.

PC Name: Can't remember the name, rogue 8th
Adventure: Champion's Belt
Location of Death: Arena
Catalyst: Two crazy and anger dwarf barbarians
Long Description: As part of their strategy, as soon as the fight began, the dwarfs jumped both in melee range with the rogue (to eliminate the easiest and smaller enemy), completly destructing the rogue in no-time.

There were two other characters who have also died in the froghemoth battle, but their performances on the fight were too weak to worth a obituary... poor souls...

Three characters were raised from the dead by Celeste (the Paladin was not one of them, since he was completly digested by the Froghemoth) as a favor requested by Eligos should anything terrible happened with the group, since Eligos intended to have the group investigate further all the plot concearning the Age of Worms path (I gave Celeste access to some raise dead spells)

The only survival - a Bard who had not joined the Gladiator's team - end up paying all the group's coins on raise deads for the other two characters.

Probably they all will die again during the battle with the Ulgurstasta... time will tell...

"There were two other characters who have also died in the froghemoth battle, but their performances on the fight were too weak to worth a obituary... poor souls..."

Ouch - that's a bad beat right there.

I know... I'm just kidding...

Deceased: Wade Wilson, Ninja 2 (name and character concept chosen largely to fit a mini that looked like Deadpool)
Adventure: Whispering Cairn
Location: Observatory
Catalyst: Losing the element of surprise, plus bad roll on Acrobatics
Long description: The party had ascended to the second floor of the observatory tower, demolishing everything on the way (they missed the dinner party, more's the pity). Wade grabbed the platinum coin, setting off an alarm, which alerted the bird in the rafters. A shuriken made short work of the bird, causing an explosion of blood and feathers. Since the party had already set off the alarm, they saw no reason not to take their time searching the place, despite the sounds of breaking glass upstairs. After several minutes, the now fully buffed zombies tromped down the stairs, followed by Filge (sort of, he actually stood at the top of the stairs and sniped). The party paladin managed to block the zombies at the foot of the stairs, so they mostly focused on him and on the summoner's eagles. After a few rounds of taking solid hits (my dice were hot on that encounter, all of the zombies rolled 17+ more than half the time), Wade decided Filge was badly in need of being stabbed in the face and tried to tumble past the zombies. He failed against one of them (rolled a 2 IIRC), and got knocked to -2 or so. After he stabilized, the paladin managed to Lay On Hands to bring him back up (to ~3 hp). On his next turn, Wade rolled a 1 on the Acrobatics check to stand up without provoking, and ate two AoOs, putting him below -12.

This was a very edge of the seat fight. At the beginning, the dice heavily favored the bad guys - zombies rolled over 17 to hit most of the time, and the caster throwing touch spells was unable to hit their touch AC of 8. After Wade went down for the count the rest of the party (bar the paladin) actually ran down to the first floor, before deciding to return to the fray (lucky rolls on the part of a summoned eagle actually took down one zombie while they were running). Once they took out Filge, the zombies were easily dispatched by kiting them with Disrupt Undead. Things probably would have been significantly easier, had the druid been present that session.

Filge managed to land two spells the entire fight. One was a Ray of Frost, which did nothing against the paladin's Aasimar resistance to cold; the other was a Chill Touch against the summoner.

This is the first actual death for this campaign so far, although there have been 5 or so KOs. That feels about right, to me. They're pretty much playing it smart, and as soon as they don't it turns around and bites them. I'm looking forward to seeing how they do in the temples.

Character: Laucian, Level 11 Human Druid (Again)
Adventure: A Gathering of Winds
Location: Antyress's abode
Cause of Death: Grappled to death in a wall of fire.

Character: Boodza, Level 11 Half-Orc Cleric of Pelor
Adventure: A Gathering of Winds
Location: Antyress's abode
Cause of Death: Grappled to death as he tried to run.

The party opens the door and immediately Antyress welcomes them. A brief parley ensues before the salamander and elemental start attacking, complaining the entire time of being 'magically compelled'. The party does not return fire, but instead tries to Dispel whatever magic is compelling them. After two rounds of this, the party is split by a wall of fire, and have taken heavy damage (the elemental was a monster!). Boodza attempts to withdraw, but is grappled by the salamander, and incinerated by the elemental. Laucian also attempts to flee, but is likewise grappled and pulled into a wall of fire by the apologetic monster, and crushed to death.

The paladin and wizard are able to lure the foes away, and slay them. The bodies of their fallen friends are recovered, but are in no condition for a raise dead. Reincarnate is used, and the Lollipop guild is formed, as the druid returns as a Halfling and the Half-Orc comes back as a Gnome.

As DM, I greatly enjoyed this fight. Everyone laughed when I revealed there was no magical compulsion; Antyress was just pulling their leg. Nothing beats apologizing to the party for incinerating the cleric, "So sorry about roasting your friend. Magically compelled, can't be helped."

Character: Mort (Half Orc, Barbarian/Sorcerer 5)
Campaign: Age of Worms
System: Pathfinder
Adventure: Encounter at Blackwall Keep
Location: Twisted Branch Lair
Cause of Death: Power attacks with a trident by King Shukak

Gory Details: Mort heroically moved in against King Shukak to help his companions, and after whiffing on a key attack roll that might have killed the wounded king, Shukak retaliated with a full power attack, landing 2 trident thrusts and a bite. The resulting 56 or so damage, killed Mort instantly. However, his companions still won the fight. They brought Mort’s corpse back to their secret camp where they managed to convince the lizardfolk druid Hishka to cast a reincarnate spell on him. Mort made a lucky roll and went from half orc to full orc, though he still seems to have a touch of draconic in him (heading for dragon disciple).

Character Name: Keveth (Again)
Adventure: Hall of Harsh Relfections
Location: Zyrxog's Domain
Cause of Death: A fellow party member

The party arrived in the large room that housed the drow, and were promptly met with a casting of confusion from the drow cleric. It hit two party members, Keveth, the fighter/rogue, and Lizzy, the Artificer. Lizzy's turn was next, and on her roll to see what action she would take, she rolled attack nearest creature. That just so happened to be her childhood friend Keveth. She hit him for a fair bit of damage (being an artificer, she has a pretty nasty home made gauntlet that can shoot some ray spells.)
Keveth was still at about 30 hitpoints, so the polymorphed spelltheif went after the drow while the wizard tried to dispel the confusion, but failed to do so. On Keveth turn, as per the rules of confusion, he attacked the last person to damage him: Lizzy. He hit her, but not for much damage. The problem came when it went around to her turn again. She shot back at Keveth – and rolled a critical. Since her rays only needed a touch attack, it wasn't hard to confirm. She hit Keveth for well over forty damage, killing him instantly.

After Keveth was dead, the spelltheif (who's polymorph effect had been dispelled by the drow cleric) returned to where the rest of the party was, and stole the confusion effect from Lizzy (who is widely acknowledged as the most powerful party member). Lizzy and the wizard were then able to take out the remaining drow, and the spellthief did not roll any confusion effects that were too problematic before the spell ended.

As a gm, I always love it when PCs are their own worst enemy. Good times!

And another one last night:

Character Name: Ellizabella Barriston (Lizzy) - Artificer 8
Adventure: Hall of Harsh Reflections
Location: Zyrxog's Domain
Cause of Death: Octopins

This one was much more straight forward than Keveth's. Immediately after Keveth died, the party decided to press onward, sending Lizzy and the spellthief to scout invisibly. Both were still CON drained from the yellow mold, and while managed to avoid too much damage from the Gylph of Warding, when they were jumped by octopins (who could, of course, see through their invisibility) they were both slowed. Despite Lizzy's high AC, the octopins were able to land a few hits while the spellthief retreated. On lucky critical hit and rend later, and Lizzy dropped from over twenty hitpoints to negative eighteen.

Death... or maybe not.

Character name: Sterling Everheart
Adventure: A Gathering of Winds
Location: True Tomb
Cause of Death: Poor decision

Upon entering the true tomb (22), the rogue (with boots of levitation) deftly pranced from pillar to pillar with little to no difficulty until reaching the other side while being nimbly followed by a fleet footed ranger. Upon reaching the other side, the rogue sends his boots of levitation across the chasm via a rope 'bridge' to a not so dexterous fighter who proceeded to safely bounce to the far side with the fear of falling abated. However, as the pally made his way over, an argument ensued which lead to the poor decision of continuing on without the safety net of said shoes. Upon the third leap the pally misjudged the distance and missed the column completely and tried desperately to grapple the pillar as it began to accelerate past him. While he plummeted to his near certain death, the remaining party member (a cleric) leaped from the safety of mother earth and flew after the fallen comrade. The pally embedded into the ground after nearly 500 ft of free fall and initially survived due to the inevitable protection from Heironeous. However, the massive damage caused instant hemorrhaging as his internal organs liquefied due to the impact (he rolled a 1 on his massive damage fort save). Luckily the cleric heard the impact and successfully cast Air Walk right before she met with the same fate and by the good graces of Pelor was able to cast revivify, thereby averting what surely should have resulted in another deathly encounter due to party dynamics.

Character: Torgan (Dwarf, cleric 8)
Adventure: Hall of Harsh Reflections
Location: Telakin's lair
Cause of Death: Telakin (greater doppelgänger)

Details: Torgan was hit by a readied fireball upon entering the greater doppelganger’s chambers. The next round before he yet to act he was hit by a scorching ray. At this point he had yet to even enter the room and the rest of the party was still in the mirror maze. His wizard ally then blocked the doorway with resilient sphere spell, but that was promptly dispelled. Torgan then found himself caught in the middle of a wall of fire, which killed and cremated him.

Character: Davy Jones, human rogue 12
Adventure: Spire of long shadows
Location of Death: outside the obsidian ring
Catalyst: failed fort save vs finger of death
Long Description: the PCs had battled all the way into the pits of the ziggurat until they came upon sruggut the worm naga sorcerer, after convincing the party to teleport him outside the ring sruggut attacked them first by killing the sorcerer (who was later revived via revivify) then turning his attention to the sneak attacking rogue who had maxed out diplomacy and became "friends" with him. well he failed by 1 vs his finger of death and being a death spell couldn't use revivify.

and davy jones had a knack for doing the crazy. several times it was said... "Davy jones... does anything without consequence of failure."

well the player made another character who died also a little later.

Character: Dominic Black (a whole bunch of classes) unseen seer crazy sneak attack etc.
Adventure: kings of the rift
Location of Death: outside the shrine of erythnul (area 23 inside citidel of weaping dragons)
Catalyst: low AC, low HP vs maralith with 14 attacks.
Long Description: seeing as how maraliths lost the ability to polymorph I gave her a ring of invisibility instead. the unseen seer saw through the illusions the maralith put up, dodged the two blade barriers ahead of the party and got lucky in the first round because she wasn't close enough. well he decided not to move in the next round and thus was sliced up by the maralith.

a while before this in the adventure library of last resort it was dominic black with his chaotic nuetral nature who took the hand of vecna for himself. the LG holy scourge sorcerer, and the cleric of pelor tried to stop him but he did it anyway, and for a while resisted the hand's ability to turn the character evil. with Kyuss threatening the world they decided that his abilities would still be needed despite having an insaney evil artifact with him. but when dominic died the cleric may have forgot to cast revivify in the next round (which the maralith died on barbarian's turn).

I had 3 deaths last session, taking the total number of deaths in the campaign to 6.

Character: Cirian (Grey Elf, Wizard 8)
Adventure: The Champion's Belt
Location: Arena understructure
Cause of Death: Ulgurstasta's necromantic acid breath weapon

Details: Cirian was standing in the prayer room where the Apostolic Scrolls were kept. Unfortunately he wasn't far enough away from the Ulgurstasta when it unleashed a 60ft cone of necromantic acid down the hallway at Cirian and the rest of the party.

One failed reflex save later and Cirian had taken 16 Con damage (yep, I rolled 16 on 3d6!) from the acid, killing him and turning him into a Spawn of Kyuss at the same time!

Character: Heloric (Dwarf, Knight 8)
Adventure: The Champion's Belt
Location: Arena understructure
Cause of Death: Ulgurstasta's necromantic acid breath weapon

Details: Heloric charged down the hallway at the Ulgurstasta, trying to help out Ezio, who had been grappled in the monstrosity's mouth. At that point the Ulgurstasta unleashed a 60ft cone of necromantic acid at Heloric and the rest of the party.

One failed reflex save later and Heloric has taken 16 Con damage (yep, I rolled 16 on 3d6!) from the acid, killing him and turning him into a Spawn of Kyuss at the same time!

Character: Ezio (Human, Crusader 7 / Cleric 1)
Adventure: The Champion's Belt
Location: Arena understructure
Cause of Death: Ulgurstasta's necromantic acid breath weapon

Details: Upon seeing that the Ulgurstasta had broken free of the sphere it was trapped in, Ezio charged down the hallway at the beast. Unfortunately for him the beast grappled him in his mouth before he could do any damage. The next round the Ulgurstasta unleashed a 60ft cone of necromantic acid down the hallway at the rest of the party.

Being grappled in the mouth of the beast, Ezio had no way of avoiding the acid. Between the damage he had taken already and the 16 Con damage (yep, I rolled 16 on 3d6!) from the acid he had no chance. He was killed and immediately turned into a Spawn of Kyuss.

Character: Seeros (Elf, alchemist 9)
Player: Seeros
Campaign: Age of Worms
System: Pathfinder
Adventure: Hall of Harsh Reflections (mind flayers’ sanctum)
Cause of Death: After being stunned by the mind flayer’s mind blast, an already injured Seeros was hit by an empowered lightning bolt from the mind flayer that burned a massive hole through his chest and killed him instantly (he failed his save and took over 40 damage from the lightning bolt). His good friend Clive has taken him to a local druid, and he has since been reincarnated as a dwarf.

Silver Crusade

Could have been 3 party deaths, but I generously kept it down to one by allowing two new players to arrive in the nick of time.

Name: Garook
Race/Class/Level: Goblin Wizard 1
Adventure: Whispering Cairn
Catalyst: Wind trap
Gory Details:

Spoiler:
The party scrambled up to this trap in the lantern room. Three players were swept away with two surviving the fall into deep negatives and one, poor Garook, snapping his neck. A harsh start to set the tone of the campaign!

Two more casualties.

Character: Maggie (Tiefling, Witch 10)
Campaign: Age of Worms
System: Pathfinder
Adventure: Champion’s Games (Bozal Zahol’s sanctum)
Cause of Death: After being teleported into Bozal’s bed chambers by Clive, Maggie finds herself unable to escape due to a blade barrier spell. She is repeatedly hammered by Bozal’s negative energy channeling from the nearby chapel until she is dead.

Character: Clive Taskerhill (Human, Wizard 10)
Campaign: Age of Worms
System: Pathfinder
Adventure: Champion’s Games (Bozal Zahol’s sanctum)
Cause of Death: Penned in by a blade barrier spell and subjected to repeated attacks from Bozal Zahol’s negative energy channeling resulting in the death condition.

This totals 11 deaths for my AoW campaign, as well as 6 characters saved only thanks to burning hero points. However, several of the deaths have taken place during additional adventures I added in that weren't part of the official AP. As a result I have not posted those on this thread.

I've forgotten about posting here in the last couple of months. Without going into full write—ups for each death, since the last post, the following have occurred:
Barbarian/Frenzied Berserker killed by Froghemoth
Warmage killed by aforementioned Frenzied Berserker uncontrollable rage in the SOLS, after fighting the first Kyuss Knight.
Spellthief and Warmage (again) killed by the Swords of Kyuss in the SOLS (one from the invocation of the worm, the other from a melee attack).
Spellthief (again) killed by Kelvos casting Destruction.
Fighter/Paladin killed by a worm naga's Slay Living, though he was revivified immediately.
Wizard, Fighter/Paladin (again) and Spellthief (again) killed by Mak'ar. Magic missiles, scorching rays, and a Plane Shift took them out. The fourth party member, an artificer, was also planeshifted randomly by Prismatic Spray, but got to a plane she could escape from.

Currently at 17 deaths, having just started PoRH, though only one character has been permanently lost (the planeshifted spellthief. The party couldn't locate him easily and decided to recruit a replacement rather than spend a lot of resources on a not particularly well liked character.)

This is the best thread ever. Finally finished reading it, and wow, what a great source of ideas! I'll be running AoW in January. Can't wait to score me some PC deaths!

I just know one player is going to die twice over, since she likes both adopting monstrous creatures and setting threats on fire. Hellooooo, baby owlbear and brown mold!

Another death last night. I think that brings the total to 7, but I may have missed a couple:

Character: Velan (Human, Bard 6 / Lyric Thaumaturge 2 / Virtuoso 2 / Sublime Chord 1
Adventure: Spire of Long Shadows
Location: Chamber in the Zigguraut
Cause of Death: Negative energy blast from a Sword of Kyuss

Details: The PC's took out the Wormcaller in round 1, but just couldn't deal with multiple blasts of negative energy from the Swords of Kyuss. Dealing 14d6 damage, those things are nasty. Eventually Velan was taken down, but was still caught in the negative energy blast area, so the next one took him from unconscious to dead.

The party eventually managed to kill the 3 Swords of Kyuss without any further deaths, but it was touch and go for a while. If Velan hadn't used his magic item from Tenser to turn the clock back 1 round (MIC magic item) the Wizard and Cleric would have died too.

Forgot this one, but at this stage of the game where raise dead is so easy to come by I'm not sure if it's completely worth it.

Character: Rojan : 20th level rogue/fighter mix (can't remember proportions)
Adventure: Into the Wormcrawl Fissure
Death by Avolakia...

In the first room with all the Avolakia priests Rojan was the only one to fail his suggestion save and followed the Avolakia-as-human into its Magnificent Mansion. Even though he was familiar with the spell and I gave him enough of an idea (at least in my mind) that all he had to do was walk out, he stayed for the fight and was killed. After the fact I ruled that an anti magic shell would suppress the mansion and the dead bodies would "pop out". So he's back.

Greg

I also had two more that I forgot to post a while back.

Character: Kashana (Cleric 16)
Adventure: The Library of Last Resort
Location: Lair of Harrowdroth
Cause of Death: Darl Quethos's monks, Sabir and Jalagar.
Grappled by one monk, Kashana was dragged away from her allies to Darl, Zyrxog, and the other monk, who attacked her as well. Although a polymorphed familiar (Lizzy's) managed to grab the monk, he was still able to take out her few remaining hitpoints.

Character Name: Lizzy (Artificer 16)
Adventure: The Library of Last Resort
Location: Lair of Harrowdroth
Cause of Death: Malhazar and Nalhazzarath
When Darl wished for an antimagic field on his efreeti friend, Lizzy was in trouble. She was quickly cornered, and with her defenses down, the two bruisers were easily able to take her out. Her contingent revivify was unable to trigger.

Wormcrawl Fissure claims it's second mortality!

Character: Ruul - 16th lvl - Cl 6/ Radiant Servant 10
Adventure: Into the Wormcrawl Fissure
Location: The Writhing Sanctum
Cause of death: Dragotha's bite

All it takes is one inattentive round. After Dragotha breathed fire on the cleric and the wizard, he landed just 10' from the cleric. Instead of taking his chance to move he cast a mass cure (IIRC) and held his ground. Dragotha decided to make a 5' move and bite the cleric., doing over 70 points of damage which put the cleric out of action, permanently. (He had previously failed his save on the breath weapon.)

Amazingly he was the only casualty in the battle, but two others were darn close.

For the record: Arcana Form (Complete Book of Eldritch Might) and the ability to cast Sphere of Ultimate Destruction (Spell Compendium) is an incredibly lethal combination...

Sovereign Court

Character: Bok - Lvl 8 Barbarian
Adventure: Hall of Harsh Reflections
Location: Cathedral of the Mind
Cause of death: Brain Extraction

Bok air-walked up to Zyrxog, who promptly mind-blasted him and extracted the brain. Complaints of not being very filling may have been made. Almost took out 2 other PC's before they took him down

Sovereign Court

Character: Hefe -Lvl 8 Fighter
Adventure: The Champions Belt
Location: Alter Room of Kyuss
Cause of Death: Critical hit with a Harm spell

After the cleric managed to bring down Bozal's anti-life shell, Hefe was the next to go and ran up to Bozal, connecting with a good hit. Bozal, not appreciating that, cast Harm, rolled a 20 on his touch attack and confirmed with an 15. 200 some odd points of negative energy later, Hefe was a smoking husk. Luckily, the cleric managed to hit lvl 9 after that fight and raised him.

Technically, I'm not sure that harm is allowed to reduce anyone below 0 hp, but he probably would have died soon after anyhow.

I always thought that too, but I reread it at my last session, and I think that restriction only applies if the target makes their save. Assuming we're talking about 3.5, at least.

Sovereign Court

By Pathfinder rules that is correct, by our home rules for that spell it is not.

Character: My Gaming Group - Level 1 (one year old, that is)
Adventure: Almost Whispering Cairn
Cause of death: Players refused to commit. I got sick of cleaning up every week only to find nobody was coming, so I gave up. Gonna try running AoW at the FLGS, so wish me luck!

Sovereign Court

Character: Chance, level 9 Sorcerer
Adventure: A Gathering of Winds
Location: The fight with Ilthane
Cause of Death: Critical vital strike bite

The dragon took to the air once the characters got near melee range and for a bit Chance was the only one doing any damage (minute meteors). Illthane grew tired of being pelted with small balls of fire and charged, dropping an 86 point bite on poor Chance, who might have been savable if he hadn't failed his massive damage death save. The dragon went down soon after, once the flying paladin and fighter caught up.

Honorable mention goes to Hefe, who lost about 15 potions to an amazingly successful Corrupt Water ability.

Character: Kashana, level 18 cleric
Adventure: Kings of the Rift
Location: Near Far Tower Rock
Cause of Death: Xyzanth

The party decided that their best bet at getting into the Citadel's vault is to negotiate with Kagro Thundersmiter, despite his insisting that the vault will never be opened. However, they (perhaps over-confidently) offered to take out all of the dragons in exchange for a discussion after, and Kagro knew he'd be foolish to pass up on the opportunity.

Braver/insaner yet, the party decided to fight the entire dragon army head on when they saw it having returned after easing off for a few hours and laying waste to Far Tower Rock. They didn't even give their poor cleric time to finish resting, much less waiting until dawn for her spells to come back. While the rest of the party flew around and hurled their full might at the dragons, Kashana tried to hide behind the large "island" to the west of the fortress. Unfortunately, as she descended there, she found Xyzanth, the fang dragon, already waiting there for an opening to attack the party. Kashana was quickly slain by his powerful bite and constitution drain.

She was quickly brought back with a revivify, but the session ended prematurely shortly after. Given the risk of the party's tactic, I wouldn't be surprised if I'm back here with some more deaths to report next week.

Also, if I haven't missed any, this marks the twentieth death for my party in Age of Worms, though we're actually still (or rather, back) with the original characters that entered the Whispering Cairn.
