Player name: Lazlo Largefeet
Adventure: SoLS
Reason: very bad luck...times 3
So Lazlo was the new cohort of Sereph the wizard that they got in Magepoint. After meeting with Manzorian, he knew he got into something to big.
They got In O.K. but in the room with the three swords and wormcaller, he was hit by one to many evocations of the worm and got to negative 44
So the druid reincarnated him and he became Lazlo the orc, but Lazlo the orc bet his fate from a discorprating dive in the room across the hall.
Then there was Lazlo the Kobald, he died by standing in front of a hungry overworm. That was -50 I think after a 140 something crit (power attack)
Fortunatly, Lazlo the elf was able to finish the adventure unharmed...

PC Name: Hargen, Half-Orc Fighter 15
Adventure: Library of Last Resort
Location of Death: Last Resort
Catalyst:
-Tilagos Girallon
-Doomshroud Night Twist
Long Description: Moving up to attack the Girallon, Hargen was unlucky--it had Combat Reflexes. Wounded when it full attacked, he died the next round. And was instantly reincarnated as a half-elf.
The night twist killed him with weird. Reincarnation turned him into a goblin. This meant Hargen had no equipment that fit him, and he would surely die again.
When Darl Quethos attacked the party, Hargen died to a full attack by the efreeti noble. He was temporarily raised by the paladin, and later reincarnated as an elf--a terrible blow to his hit points, but at least he was Medium.
PC Name: Hargen, (many races) Fighter 17
Adventure: Kings of the Rift
Location of Deaths: Undercity, Carrion Pit
Catalyst:
-Necrozyte
-Mother Worm
-Mother Worm again
Long Description: Hargen came into this adventure an elf. After a full attack from Necrozyte, including a smite good, Hargen was dead again. He was instantly reincarnated, rolling a 63... halfling! Stuck with no Small equipment again.
Later, the Mother Worm moved up and paralyzed him. Next round, she killed him and the druid's animal companion. Hargen was instantly reincarnated. Rolled 63... halfling!?
Getting up to fight again, Hargen ended up taking the last swing of the worm's full attack, most of which were against a pile of earth elementals. He died and was instantly reincarnated. This time he let the druid roll. Rolled... 63. Halfling.

Rolled 63... halfling!?
This time he let the druid roll. Rolled... 63. Halfling.
Now I've heard of the dice having a repeat phase but that has got to be one of the oddest. A d100 roll and a 63/halfling three times like that? Two words my friend: new dice. Good luck getting him to the end as something other the a halfling.

Player name: Shadow
Class: 8th-lvl halfling rogue
Adventure: HoHR lower level
Catalyst: Stubbornness and a nasty doppelganger guard
They broke rule #1 - don't split the party, particularly in a mirror maze designed to do just that, with three dopp guards roaming around. The dopps took advantage of the sliding mirrors constantly, getting surprise and flanking over and over. For some reason, the halfling rogue thought he could take one of them on his own ("Toe-to-toe - and I got big toes"). The guard's reply: "They call me...Mister Crit."
Three crits later he was hobbit puree. Doppelgangers see through Feint maneuvers real well.
It took them three hours to clear the maze and find the door to Telakin's lair, which was only 10 feet from where they started.

*Looks in todays AOW newspaper* Hmmm.... noone died today. Is that a good thing or a bad thing?
We start HOHR tonight, though I don't expect anyone to die just yet, it will probably occur in this particular adventure.
Now taking bets on who buys the farm:
1) The half-orc Cleric
2) The dwarven Psionic Warrior
3) The halfling Duskblade
4) The human Wizard
5) All of the above

Adventure: Whispering Cairn
Location of death: Whispering Cairn room 7
Catalyst: Mad Slasher & Acid Beetle Swarm combo
Date: Sunday, Reaping 2nd, 595 C.Y.
Campaign game session #1
Long description: Upon pushing the sarcophagus towards the green lantern, a horrible rumbling was heard, much louder and more stressful than the earlier one. Ragaust ventured down the tunnel to see if anything was blocking a cylinder from rising in this passage. Whatever strain the mechanism was under was not visible, but was enough to cause the floor to cave in very nearly beneath his feet. Ragaust leapt to momentary safety and could see nothing from the cloud of dust that erupted from the newly formed pit. The rest of the party called out to see if he was all right and were answered by Ragaust running back towards them warning that he heard the skittering of thousands of insects climbing up the pit. The party quickly threw down some oil ahead of them, but the swarm of beetles crawled through it before the party could light it. Also climbing up the pit was the most aberrant creature the any of them had ever seen. It looked to be a spider the size of a large dog, but its body was almost entirely composed of a solitary eye and all six of its legs ended in sharp knife-like points. Though the party managed to light the oil, this hideous creature scampered quickly through the burning space.
And then tragedy set in. The battle was quick and deadly. Krase, the swordsman, and Ragaust were swarmed by beetles, which in addition to biting furiously, exuded some sort acidic trail on anything and anyone they crawled on. Both Krase and Ragaust were quickly overcome with nausea and scrambled to get clear of the thousands of diminutive insects. Jordanus cast a spell to light the swarm on fire (the beetles were covered in the oil they crawled through), but to his horror the now flaming swarm of beetles moved to him and were soon crawling all over him. Jordanus collapsed in a heap beneath the swarm. His sacrifice was not in vain however as the swarm soon dissipated from the flames consuming them. The horrible spider-like creature ran down and killed Ragaust and very nearly would've killed Krase if not for priest of St. Cuthbert, Calvin, regaining his courage and making a valiant attack. The horrible creature retreated back down the pit from which it emerged. Krase and Calvin carried the bodies of their compatriots out of the Whispering Cairn and all the way back to Diamond Lake, arriving shortly after nightfall.

Campaign game session #9
Long description: After killing the last of the fanatical cultist the adventurers heard a horrible sound. Rounding a corner in the 10 foot wide corridor to the east an immense boar began to rush towards them.
Selmaug the wizard quickly murmured an arcane phrase and gestured at the animal. A scorching ray of flame shot from the mage's fingertip and struck his foe. Selmaug immediately stepped behind his friends. The boar seemed only the more enraged as it charged into Calvin, tearing a hole in his chainmail with its great tusks. The scoundrel, Eryll, moved to the boar's far side and slashed at it with the magical shortsword he found in the Whispering Cairn. The wild thrashings of the boar made the attack fail. Suddenly a loud hum was heard as Ballard, the mindmage, pointed at the creature and a bolt of electricity shot at it. The boar grunted in rage. Calvin called upon St. Cuthbert to grant him the strength to defeat the beast (Strength Domain ability) and swung mightily with his mace at the boar. Krase stepped forward and slashed at the creature with his two-bladed sword but found the creatures thick hide difficult to penetrate.
Selmaug pointed his wand at the beast. Two blinding bolts of eldritch energy shot from the tip of the wand and struck the boar's hide as if they had been launched from a crossbow. The boar lashed out at Calvin. The tusks found the damaged area of Calvin's armor again and nearly disembowled the unfortunate priest of St. Cuthbert. Calvin's lifeless corpse was thrown unceremoniously to the ground.
The rest of the battle was just as brutal and bloody, but the beast was finally bested.

PC Name: Mortelus 'Bones' Feng (Lvl 6 Human Male Wizard/Pale Master (5/1))
Adventure: Blackwall Keep
Location of Death: Swamps on the way back from the Lizardfolk Lair
Catalyst: Failed will save vs. Harpies
Long Description: Mortelus or Bones to all who knew him was a necromancer and the glue of the party. It was he who kept the Barbarian and the Monk from ripping the party apart. He was also known to greatly stack the cards in the favor of the party with some strategically cast Rays of Enfeeblement. He met his end on the way back from the Lizardfolk Lair. The party had dispatched the king and body guard, negotiated a truce with the shaman, and left with the dragon egg. In the swamp, tragedy struck as the party was descended upon by a pack of harpies and most of the party fell under the effects of their song. It was at this point the Bones, while trying to get to the harpy who had entranced him, walked into a pool of water and drown. To make matters worse the person carrying the egg dropped it and worms were everywhere and thus infected Bones. The party, after pulling Bones' corps from the water, was forced to fight the zombie he had become.
What a way to go! I couldn't make a roll to save my life, literally. At one point I needed to roll a 5 on a concentration check to get myself out of the water. I rolled a 4! What a slap in the face that was. Some days the dice gods just aren’t with you.

PC Name: Kai (Cillian), half-elf (high) ROG 3 / RNG 3
Adventure: Encounter at Blackwall Keep
Location of Death: Lair of the Lizard King
Catalyst: Spurning Rudd's gift, and standing next to Shukak when the Lizard King confirmed a crit.
Long Description: Kai tempted fate first during negotiations with Hishka when he, not trusting the shaman, tried to sneak behind Hishka around another hallway. This led him within the reach of an assassin vine. Barely escaping this encounter with his life, by the luck of Rudd (and the grace of the DM), the party hid in a rope trick to prepare to confront Shukak. The next day, when trying to defeat Shukak, Kai tumbled into a flanking position. Shukak, seeing Kai as the weakest character in reach, attacked Kai with his flaming greatsword (I swapped weapons to something a PC could make use of) scoring a couple of hits, at least one critical, and sending Kai to his eternal reward.

Hmmm. I didn't think all those metal wires in a warforged brain would be so tasty for a mindflayer. Did this happen on the first encounter with Zyrxog? If not, they should have been forewarned and thus fore-armed. Zyrxog is nasty, though, and has resulted in more than one TPK. I guess you'll have to start part III with a team of unsuspecting contestants who come to Greyhawk for the Champion's Games . . .
But then again, maybe Zyrxog didn't have room for all those brains in his tum-tum. One poor sacrificial victim died, the others are languishing in his prison, guarded by zombies and drow, their equipment stashed in Zyrxog's lab somewhere. The dead PC's replacement is among the other prisoners in there with them.

Player name: Amber
Class: 4th-lvl human rogue
Adventure: The Three Faces of Evil
Catalyst: A web, a mage and a summoned monster.
The party, having made it into the Temple of Vecna and defeated the allip, was having problems with a web spell cast by an acolyte. Only the rogue and paladin made their saves and were near the front edge. Then the Faceless One summons his huge centipede.
The rogue gets critted by the centipede and drops from a magic missle from the acolyte. The paladin drops soon later, but self-stabalizes. The ranger and cleric eventually free themselves of the web, and after a 46-round long battle, kill the accolytes, the summoned centipede and dire ape, and drive off the Faceless One (who was hurt and out of spells). Unfortunately, it wasn't soon enough to save poor Amber.

I have been surprised how deadly the first two in the series have been (90 kills each)
Your players went through 90 characters not once but twice, that is some group of players, you think they'd be so sick and tired of rolling up characters coming up with names. The whispering cairn would be feared for miles having taken that many lives!

I am waiting for my chance to add some names to this very thread. I thought that I finally had a death when a summoned fiendish ape(courtesy of Theldrick in TFOE) took a bite out of our ranger's throat but I made a mistake with the crit damage(rolled x3 instead of x2 on a bite) so the ranger lived to fight another day :( We are getting ready to start HOHR this week though, and from the looks of this thread we might be having our first death. yes the MF didn't eat the WF. But the fighter was slowed due to Octipins and the wizard had 0 chance for getting through his SR.
Later I realized that the DC for the mind blast was 20 not 23, that might have made some difference.
BTW rather than reroll new characters we reset the fight. They'll be squaring off with him next week.

We almost had a 4th character death in our group last session. The Barbarian was almost taken out by the buffed and blurred half-orc cleric from the Hextorian (Church of Eternal Night from Kalamar in my campaign). He was healed by the party cleric in the last round when he was hitting -10.
I wonder if one catalogued all the near-death experiences on top of all the actual fatalities if one could come up with a survivability matrix for Age of Worms characters.
I can see it now:
DM: "You want to play a gnome wizard? Okay, but I feel obliged to tell you that gnome wizards have only 23% chance of surviving to the fifth installment of the campaign..."

Chalk up a couple character deaths in the Champion's Belt! Our intrepid Kenku Urban Ranger/rogue tried to go toe-to-toe with the Akilith demon and lasted about two rounds before departing for that big bird nest in the sky.
Strangely enough, Auric's flesh golems took down our Half-giantess Psychic warrior. They charged in, attacked once, then on the next round all three of them hit her for a total of 80+ points of damage. Ouch.

Deceased: Skeeter, 8th level pixie rogue
Adventure: HOHR/Champions Belt
Catalyst: A real nightmare
Drow priestess on nightmare-back (backed up by an octopin) blows a hole in their inn room wall. Sprite tried to go invisible, but the nightmare sees into that plane and goes after him. Warmage starts some sleet storm that last eight rounds, blinds everybody but the octopin, who can see through anything. Much fruitless hacking and slashing ensues.
Eventually the drow remounts the nightmare and saddles up the octopin with her (to this point, six rounds in, the PCs still hadn't seen the octopin). The pixie flies out after them, visible. The drow instructs the octopin to point out any enemies in the sleet storm, and she casts Confusion successfully on the pixie, then flies above the sleet. On the 2nd round, the pixie is forced to attack the nearest being, which was the drow. In retaliation, she casts Hold Person on him, he fails the save, and falls 50 feet. That nearly gets him, but then the warmage cast Ice Storm, which hits the drow but also the pixie. T-t-t-t-t-that's all, fey.
Funniest part of the evening was the fighter, blinded, climbing up on the roof naked, sword in hand (nobody had armor on). The sleet storm ends (finally), and he attempts to dive off on the drow. A nice one on the Jump check, and his friends see his naked ass screaming by on the way to the ground, where the nightmare stomped him. Almost had my second scalp there.
I probably broke 99 rules in this battle, but it was fun.

Location of Death: the True Tomb
Catalyst: In fight with Wind Warriors, tried to tumble away after attacking. Hit one and did some damage. Tumble roll comes as one, AoO from Wind Warrior is a critical for 21pts of damage (maximum being 22). Rogue goes from 8 hitpoints straight to -13.
And in Whispering Cairn as well, 'almost death'
PC Name: Alfray
Class / Race: 2 Fighter / Human
Adventure: Whispering Cairn
Location of Death: the True Tomb
Catalyst: Fights against Wind Warriors and is knocked down. When bleeding, a wind blast kills him.
Two rounds later strange substance that Filge had prepared from dead Kuyss worm and had injected to Alfray (as means to take him out of batte), kicks in. Alfray starts to 'live again' but is a bit changed. Nonetheless he pummels the Wind Warrior and must learn to live as undead version of his old self.

Death number two came during last week's session.
Name: Dresden
Race/Class/level: half-elf wizard 9
Adventure: Champion's Belt
Location: Apostolic Scroll Chamber
Catalyst: Ulgurstasta Breath Weapon
So, the party dropped (but didn't kill) Bozal Zahol within one round with a well-placed fireball and a volley of arrows from the arcane archer. They brought him back to consciousness to question him about the scrolls. He dropped the force shell around the ulgurstasta and taunted them. They proceeded to kill him and open the doors to the chamber. After some tough fighting, Dresden was dropped by the ulgurstasta's breath weapon and rose as a spawn of kyuss the next round. The party cleric turned all the undead in the chamber, destroying them...which included the now undead wizard. The party toasted to his memory, swore revenge against the Ebon Triad and Katashka-Kyuss, and divided his loot. He will be missed.

PC Name: Crunk
Class / Race: 8th level ogre barbarian
Adventure: Champion's Belt
Location of Death: The Arena
Catalyst: Who gnew the gnoll was such a head-gnocker?
First round of the Belt. Allustan's Caravan hung back a round, letting the Sapphire Squad (who they'd made a deal with) charge diagonally across the arena towards Arcane Auriga, who promptly shot them full of holes. The gnolls of Badlands Revenge attempted to charge the Sapphires with little effect.
Second round the Caravan emerged from their Leomund's Tiny Hut to the jeers of the crowd. The ogre led the charge, with a hireling cleric close behind in case he got into trouble. He did, as the gnolls turned and charged out of the dust, attacking the party fighter.
On the third round the ogre charged between two gnolls, giving up an AoO in order to (hopefully) use his Cleave feat. This proved disastrous, as in rapid order the gnoll criticaled the AoO to the tune of 62 points of damage(!), Crunk missed with his only swing, and the same gnoll finished him off on his turn.
Crunk, who was a replacement character for one that died last week, had a combat career of 17.9 seconds. He was also our tenth death, involving nine characters and five players, since we started the AoW.

OK, now I gotta add to this gallery of horror:
PC Name: Chivalrian
Race / Class: Elfish Ranger 3
Adventure: Three Faces of Evil
Location of Death: Temple of Hextor, Guard Room
Catalyst: Longbows are no good in narrow passages.
Circumstances: Tiefling guards beat the sh*t out of the whole party. The rest got captured and should have been sacrificed to the Ebon Aspect. Didn´t work out.
PC Name: Lia
Race / Class: Halfling Rogue 4
Adventure: Three Faces of Evil
Location of Death: Temple of Hextor, Battle Temple
Catalyst: Divine Summon Monster III
Circumstances: The revenge assault on the Hextorites was more successful than the first meeting, but the fiendish ape that Theldrick summoned ripped the party rogue apart.
PC Name: Xeraph
Race / Class: Elfish Ranger 7
Adventure: Hall of Harsh Reflections
Location of Death: Underwater passage in the Sodden Hold
Catalyst: Curiosity
Last Words before going on an extended dive: "Chicken!"
Circumstances: The rogue dove done the shaft in the Sodden Hold and then came back up, claiming that it was too dangerous to simply go on. The ranger (replacement of Chivalrian, s.a.) took the everburning torch, called her a chicken and claimed that real adventurers have to be curios about such things as underwater passages. Then he dove to meet his death in the form a couple tentacles of a giant octopus. The rest of the party (after noticing a cloud of blood ascending the watery shaft) agreed with the rogue about the danger of the shaft and left the Sodden Hold... :o)

Seeing the two 'deaths by octopus' in HoHR above, I have to grind my teeth. I had a beefed up version of the octopus (with stunning fist!) ready to smack my 8 PCs around (though hopefully not kill them).
The druid changes into a squid and is made invisible by the bard. The invisible squid jets away from the octopus when he sees it, changes back into a halfling on the platform, and pulls the lever. The octopus looks for the druid by touch, but can't find him because he is now an invisible pelican flying around above the platform. As the water level goes down, the octopus retreats :(
I was impressed by the players' creativity, but I really wanted to use that octopus!

The players still have to get back out again! If they don't find the secret door that Zyrxog enters by, they've got to pull the lever atop the platform and run/swim across to the barrel elevator. Even if they get to the barrel, the octopus can squeeze down the passage after them and reach up to pluck his dinner off the top of the barrel. Yum yum!

There's no way they will pull that lever again :). They would keep everything dry and use their rope of climbing to get out.
Anyway, I'm going to let them see Zyrxog's secret door because I WANT them to go in the sewers. Hopefully, they'll be mad that Zyrxog mindblasted a few of them and got away.
sorry for the minor threadjack...

PC: Karl Hammerfist FTR 3 Cleric 1
Adventure: Three Faces of Evil
Location of Death: Dark Cathedral
Catalyst: Going toe-to-toe with the Ebone Aspect
The scout Alex, being the only guy with a magic weapon (strenght bow) that is doing damage to the Ebone Aspect, keeps it busy while the rest set up. The Ebone Aspect catches Alax and nearly has him dead. Karl jumps in between Alex and the Aspect. The Ebone Aspect uses Bloodthirst of Erythnul, gets a critical hit with the bite and scores hits with all three claws, takes Karl to one hit point in a single round. Karl runs as the paladin, Wilhelm, intercedes. The Aspect redirects the Standard of Hextor (which was on Alex until he ran out of range) onto Karl and drops him to -9 in one hit. Karl expires on the next round.
A glorious sacrifice, which shall go rewarded.
