Age of Worms Adventure Path
7th death of the campaign... Name: Estene Moonmeadow (grey elf warlock 9, cohort)
Description: All it took was one round. Since she could fly at will, Estene was sent down the Falling River to scout ahead under the protection of invisibility. However, since she lacked darkvision, the light spell cast on her drew the attention of 6 wind warriors, with great speeds and initiative. Her DR 7/cold iron and invisibility failed to protect her from the wind warriors' sonic blasts and the falling damage she took from falling down the river finished her off, at least until she gets raised.
We lost our Rogue/Shadow Dancer in the battle with Dragotha. It was interesting, our fighter and our cleric hidden with a magical shirt from MIC, can't remember what it was called. It mimiced hide from undead. Any way, it was the rogue and wizard that appeared before Dragotha, the wizard carrying Bucknard's purse and the rogue with the fury in his rapier. We had a nice conversation with Dragotha before the rogue won initiative and charged with a miss. That same round our cleric and fighter got into better positions while the wizard cast his offensive spells. well the second round we did little damage to Dragotha. Dragotha then tried to use Force Cage on our fighter, but the wizard's ring of spellbattle, I think it was, allowed him to turn it back on Dragotha. When it came back to the rogue he used his ring of major spell storing to cast a silence spell, on himself. He the used shadow jump to get in the middle of Dragotha's space thus rendering him usless, but he did rip the rogue in two. To make things worse, by the time our wizard got to go shortly after he finished the battle with an empowered Magic Missile. Yes the oldest dracolich dies by a magic missle.
PC Name: Taravin Truesilver (male human Gray Guard 10/Paladin of Honor [Stand Fast variant] 5/Pious Templar 4)
PC Name: Workgroup D, a.k.a "Purity" (Fighter / Barbarian / Warforged Juggernaut)
Full Description: Having wasted many of their buff spells earlier in the day when they were originally slated to fight Madtooth, the members of Hammer Time chose to conserve their resources until they knoew the fight would go on, casting only a single round of buffs as Madtooth's cage was opened. Purity charged in recklessly, leaving himself completely open as he swung at the enormous creature. In pain, Madtooth turned its full attention against the warforged, battering him with all four of its tentacles and ensnaring him with its tongue. His teammates stayed at range, hoping to damage the beast enough to free Purity without exposing themselves to certain death. It wasn't enough. The tongue retracted, and Purity disappeared down the enormous gullet. His teammates saw a spikey shoulder puncture through the beast's stomach shortly afterwards, but the gap was not large enough to extract himself, and the warforged's struggling quickly subsided. [Purity's player wants me to note that he attributes his death to metagaming, thinking that if the party was going to be expected to expend resources exploring the recently discovered under-arena that evening, they must not actually need them for this fight. Therefore he abstained from the Iron Construct infusion that would otherwise have been cast on him, giving him DR15 / Adamantine. Alas! But really, half the party is blaming themselves for this death. Everyone had something they might have done. So long, Purity. We look forward to seeing what you reincarnate as.]
PC Name: Nala (female elf fighter 5)
Of course, they now have a problem, as the spawnling managed to reanimate the king and a few other dead lizardfolk as a spawns, and soon, the Mistmarsh may become a nightmarish place of worms. Hail Kyuss!
PC Name: Vanthis(male dragonborn of bahamut paladin 6)
Oh, and Vanthis died too.
PC Name: Vanthis(male dragonborn of bahamut paladin 6)
After dying ingloriously to owlbears, Vanthis accepted being raised from the dead to give the ol' hero thing a second try. Everything was going well, until the party reached the Hall of Deception, and spent a good deal of resources(and patience) dealing with and recovering from the dopplegangers. Physically and emotionally drained, the party pushed onward, determined to find the source of this bizarre conspiracy hatched against them. Telakin awaited them upon his throne, in the guise of Allustan. Catching much of the party in the doorway will a wall of fire, he then managed to catch Vanthis and Dhar'shan, the parties main real warriors, with a confusion spell. During the first couple rounds, both fled from Telakin to the far side of the room(the wall of fire kept them from escaping the room entirely.) Unfortunately, on the 3rd round, Dhar'shan turned and attacked Vanthis. For the next several rounds, they traded blows until Dhar'shan landed a grievous blow on Vanthis, cutting him down.(sometimes, greataxe criticals aren't that beautiful)
Name: Finari
The party arrived in the Overgod's Court having dispatched the Hangman Golem that had been guarding the upper level. Upon arriving, the Aspect of the Overgod immediately attacked. Recognizing the Aspect as a more powerful version of the evil creature that the party had fought back in the Dourstone mines, Finari moved in and attacked with everything she had. Using her hold sword, her smite evil ability and her smite corruption ability, Finari inflicted massive wounds upon the monstrosity. In doing so, Finari go the full attention of the Aspect of the Overgod. The Aspect unleashed the full might of all of his attacks on her since she was the only party member with a weapon that bypassed its damage reduction. Within two rounds, the remainder of Finari's stoneskin was gone (much of her stoneskin had been used up in the fight with the Hangman Golem in the upper level of the underground complex) and Finari was torn to pieces by the onslaught. (-43 hit points!) This was in full view of Finari's husband Duncan, who could do nothing to save his wife since he had used up his healing spells on Windra, the party's sorcerer. The Aspect was dispatched the next round (largely do to a critical hit from Duncan's heavy mace) but it was much too late to save Finari. Fortunately, Windra and Duncan teleported to Magepoint to have Finari resurrected.
PC Name: Grim Firestorm (male shield dwarf Barbarian 1/Battlerager 3/Frenzied Berserker 10/Warmain 5)
The party escaped to safety, leaving Grim alone to face down four avolakia priests. He was soon held and then rendered unconscious. The exact details of his death after that are too terrible and gruesome to contemplate.
Sir Guy Ashmore (aka: Saint Guy the Trapspringer); 10th level Paladin/3rd level Human Paragon – slain in battle by Augerric the Oculus Demon; Sir Guy was resurrected and continues to serve the Invincible One. Valyn Doth; 8th level Skarn Monk/3rd level Spinemeld Warrior – slain in battle by Augerric the Oculus Demon.
My campaign counts 4 deaths so far:
Name: Mirnak (male Half Orc Druid of Mielikki - CG)
Description: the druid died heroically trying to put an end to Mak'ar existence by touching him with the heal effect of the seventh fragment of the Rod of Seven Part (Shattered Scepter of Calim in my campaign since we play in Faerun). After that the fighter of the group grab the dead body and the party teleported to Magepoint. the druid was buried in his homeland by the party and the other druids of his circle, in the core of High Forest in the North. then Name: Elyn Tywien (female Half Elf Wizard/Archmage - CG)
the unlucky wizard was promptly "revivified" by the party cleric Name: Elyn Tywien
the party was trying to lure Krathanos outside his keep and was intercepted by the Gargoyle while the titan was coming. in the fight that followed the wizard was slain by a gargoyle and revivified by the cleric. Name: Niam Miendinoth (calishite human female Rogue/spymaster - CN)
while exploring the vale of thorns the pcs were ambushed by Darl Quethos (in my campaign a cleric/shadow adept of Shar and not of Myrkul) and his allies. in the fight that followed Niam was trying to blind Darl's Robe of Eyes in order to sneak attack him, when the priest anticipate her and used his 9th level domain spell (darkness) to get rid of her. she was revivified the following round.
PC Name: Kyra (female human bard 7)
PC Name: Half-breed(male half-orc barbarian/fighter/bear warrior 8)
Reach, Combat Reflexes, and Rend. That advanced Octopin was nasty. And it certainly didn't help that they fought it in the brain room after the warlock chose to wander off and get the octopin's attention before they had successfully dealt with the brain pillar.
PC Name: "Fate" (male human rogue 4)
PC Name: Mael Gabrian (male human Cleric 19)
The team scooped up the dead, and Taravin took them all to Longsaddle using his greater skeleton key.
PC Name: Morak Beardfist (male shield dwarf Fighter 1/Rage Cleric 18)
The team scooped up the dead, and Taravin took them all to Longsaddle using his greater skeleton key.
PC Name: Mael Gabrian (male human Cleric 19)
PC Name: Summerled, male elf rogue 10
Long Description: After opening the doors to the tomb, Summerled was chosen to find the path across the room. The party tied two coils of rope together and held on to one end while Summerled had the other end secured around his waist. Summerled sucessfully found his way across to the doors at the opposite end of the room and garnered the unwanted attention of the elder air elementals. Summerled tried to make his way back across the columns as the air elementals attacked. He botched his jump check and fell into the mists below. The party had a chance to save him, but failed their collective strength check to hang on. The rope was yanked forcefully from their hands, leaving nasty rope-burns, as Summerled proceeded on his way to splatter on the floor two-hundred feet below. The party's druid has agreed to cast reincarnation, so Summerled shall return next session.
My campaign had its first casualties last night, against the organized forces of the Battle Temple of Hextor in the Three Faces of Evil. Deceased/disabled: Crunk, half-orc barbarian 1/fighter 2.
(This player had to bow out of the campaign, and so was looking for a glorious way to exit.) Crunk, having used Power Attack and Cleave to cut his way through the vast majority of the Hextor cultists, tiefling guards, and the Beast (which in my campaign was a displacer beast rather than a dire boar), was finally laid low by Garras's heavy flail after his rage finally ebbed. However, he stabilized at -5, and so the Faceless One (after the PCs retreated for the day to lick their wounds) will choose to heal and cast charm person on the fallen half-orc. Crunk will be making a reappearance as the wizard's bodyguard when the PCs finally storm the Faceless One's labyrinth... and when a raging 18 STR half-orc barbarian is a mage's muscle, beware! *evil grin* Deceased: Golmackan ("Mac"), spiked-chain-wielding goliath warblade 2.
Initially trying to recover Crunk from the sands of the Battle Temple (Theldrick never closed the doors, as the party never fully entered), Mac was struck low by a near-full-damage hit from Garras's heavy flail. Although the PC bard of the party got him up on his feet with a cure light wounds, and the party cleric was able to give him some healing, Mac fell again while he and the cleric were trying to retreat down the entry corridor, this time to a crippling blow from a tiefling's greataxe. He bled out the next turn, having failed to stabilize, and the party was forced to retreat. Theldrick will be using desecrate and animate dead on the statue of Hextor in the Battle Temple, and will have the corpses of the displacer beast, Mac, the fallen tiefling guards and the slain warrior-cultists ready to stand in the defense of the Temple. -------
PC Name: Sir Guy Ashmore (aka: Saint Guy the Trapspringer)
After a rough battle against the Kyuss Knight Nezzarin and his Eviscerator Beetle ‘pets’ the heroes continued into the Spire. Sir Guy opened the door to the Halls of Knowledge and was felled by an Invocation of the Worm and two sword swinging Undead bad guys in one round. PS: This is Sir Guy’s second death – and resurrection in two gaming sessions!
Character Windra , female elf sorcerer 15
Windra moved up to cast stone skin on the Auron, the party's dwarf fighter. This placed her with in range of the Octopus tree which unloaded on both Auron and Windra. Auron survived the onslaught without too much trouble. Windra was at -30 hit points. Windra was later resurrected by the the party's cleric Duncan.
PC Name: Sama (male half-elf Sorcerer 8)
PC Name: Mael Gabrian (male human Cleric 19)
PC Name: Saedd West (male human Fighter 5/Pious Templar 9/Wormhunter 5)
PC Name: Ranulph Wathbater (male human Berserker 2/Fighter 2/Hellreaver 10/Paladin of Freedom 3/Rogue 2)
PC Name: Cid d'Lyandar (artificer/windwright captain), Vigil (warforged knight), Oamah (half-orc fighter/dragon warlord), Keifer (paladin/deadgrim/greyguard)
In what I consider the most memorable encounter of the campaign since the Battle Temple of Hextor, my players surprised me and avoided yet another TPK, but not without casualties. Out of respect for the fallen, the description shall be a tad longer than usual. After this last encounter the death tally for the campaign has risen to 11... Names: Jarryn (human warmage 2/wizard 3/ultimate magus 8), Mathias Burne (human cleric 8/ordained champion of Hextor 5), Perren Moonmeadow (grey elf beguiler 13), Estene Moonmeadow (grey elf warlock 10, cohort)
Description: When the Warhounds opened up the doors leading into the Halls of Corruption, they were greeted by Kelvos the Wormtouched and the two angels of Worm. After being targeted by a prismatic spray and a wages of sin, Jarryn effectively trapped the trio inside the chamber with a wall of force. Kelvos, seeing that he couldn't handle these mortals on his own, teleported to the Halls of Knowledge and summoned the 3 swords of Kyuss and the wormcaller to the fight. Bursting into the chamber on the following round, the swords of Kyuss opened up with a volley of worm invocations, killing both Perren and Estene and seriously injuring three of the other five characters. Most of the party was within 30 ft. of the pit during this combat and suffered a -2 penalty to all attacks, saving throws, and skill checks (except for Mathias who was neither good nor neutral). Steelwind's (elf ranger/scout) high Reflex saves coupled with his evasion ability left him unscathed. Jarryn used Otiluke's ring to cast Otiluke's resilient sphere as an immediate action, also leaving him unharmed. Combat continued with spells such as delay death and close wounds keeping Mathias and Kayla (dwarf barbarian) alive. Aurora (human paladin of Pelor) heroically kept Kelvos busy until Mathias finally arrived and together they slew the corrupted eladrin. Steelwind, Kayla, and Jarryn managed to destroy the swords of Kyuss and the wormcaller, but not before five more invocations of the Worm were set off, killing Jarryn and sending Kayla into the negatives. (The only limitation I imposed on the villains during this combat was I never had a sword of Kyuss use an invocation of the Worm two rounds in a row.) Barely alive, the party picked up their fallen companions and began healing themselves, but had to prepare for the imminent entrance of the two angels of the Worm since Jarryn's wall of force was just about to disappear. The angels were joined by two wormswarms. This second part of the combat saw Estene's body devoured by a wormswarm and Aurora, under the effect of wages of sin attack a fellow PC and lose her paladin powers. Mathias, still under the effect of a potion of fly charged the two fallen angels to give time to his companions to escape. He fought extremely well, defeating both angels nearly by himself. Against the last angel of the Worm, Mathias' killing blow came at the same time that his righteous might ran out, killing Mathias instantly and sending both combatants plummeting to the ground. Fortunately, his body was retrieved by Steelwind, who had returned to aid our fallen hero, before it was devoured by a wormswarm. The last three living Warhounds limped their way back over the obsidian ring to lick their wounds after a 22-round battle.
Character Windra , female elf sorcerer 15
The party was looking for the crystals necessary to activate the Gate of Storms. While two of the party members were doing aerial recon, Windra, Vandar and Auron were looking for the crystals on the ground. Krekie cast improved invisibility and her godlike move silently skills to get close enough to Windra and take her out. Windra never new what hit her. After the party dispatched Krekie, Windra was raised by the party cleric Duncan.
Bring out your dead, bring out your dead... This one is a near-TPK, with the sole survivor alone and without backup in the jungle. Rather than chronicling her death from cholera, we decided to create a whole-new bunch of characters to tackle the beast that is SoLS again. This list is ordered according to time of death. Name: Lyssandra, female human sorcerer 13 (Celestial Bloodline)
Name: Rashkar, male human cleric of Garl Glittergold 13 (Don't even ask...)
Name: Ellisandreia Echowind, female grey elf cleric 3 / diviner 3 / mystic theurge 6
Name: Torim Steelsplitter, male dwarf fighter 13
Name: Frenk Silverdigger, male human fighter 13
Details:
When Nezzarin had bolstered his forces with the Angels of the Worm, he called back the badly-wounded beetle. This was actually me being a bit lenitent to give them some chance to regain their footing and either flee, or at least take the fight back to Nezzarin. Yet the group wondered at the retreat, added a protection from evil here, a death ward there, and a cure moderate wounds to spare but in general did not do much to help their situation. Worst of all, they remained pinned in the eastern entry room. The beetle consumed a wormswarm from the Angel's room, going from 12 HP left to full. Nezzarim and Kelvos called on the Wormcaller and Swords of Kyuss, who advanced on the party under the Ghaele's protective aura, for fear of fireballs and similar magic. They would not have needed to worry. All the while, the Sword Archons circled the Spire from the outside, to cut off the retreat path. All the while, the party bickered, the Cleric decided to step right into the corridor towards the central chamber, but stop after one step... and when finally, the sorceress noticed the approaching sword archons, it was already almost too late. She managed to shoot a disintegrate at the approaching Archon, yet managed to miss his touch AC. She stepped out of the doorway to avoid the approaching fallen angels - and right into the "fireball formation" the group maintained in the antechamber. Two of the Swords and the Wormcaller stepped into line of sight soon after, unloading two invocations of the worm which hit all characters except for the mystic theurge. They were enough to fell and outright kill Lyssandra, and the Flame Strike by the Wormcaller finished the job on the cleric. The assassin had cast greater invisibility beforehand, and handily evaded all three blasts. The Sword archons entered the antechamber (careful not to enter the "AoE zone"), and while they did not do much damage, they severely restricted the parties mobility. So when the Mystic Theurge decided get the party out of this rapidly closing noose, she caught an AoO, and promptly missed her concentration check by 1. At that point, Azrael struck out on her own, zipping past the Angels of the Worm and flying away as fast as she could. Being greater invisible, and with only Nezzarin having line of detection, she got away free. On the next round, the Kyuss Knight closed to melee, while the Swords merrily continued their invocations. The elven theurge fell first, but her dwarven friend was not far behind. The human fighter, being Death Warded, was unaffected by the invocations, but did not like his odds at all, and made a mad rush for the obsidian ring. He nearly got there, but the last of the Sword Archon's flyby attacks reduced him to negative HP, causing him crash into the ring and end his life on Kyuss-infested ground. All in all, a near TPK caused by lack of planing, nearly unbelievably passive play, and a bit of bad luck (as well as a too-competent startoff. Had they not killed the first beetle as offhandedly, i doubt Nezzarin would have called in all the forces in the spire). The last member of the Diamonds, survived by virtue of a greater invisibility spell, flight and the wise decision to cut her losses as her friends started dropping left and right.
PC Name: Helohm Umlochan; 8th level Warmage/7th level Mage Killer
After successfully defeating the Over-God, the heroes returned to rest at the Deluxury. During the night a group of undead assassins attacked the heroes in their rooms and Helohm fell to the unrelenting claws of multiple flayed zombies. Helohm was resurrected and returns to battle the minions of Kyuss.
PC Name: Lillandrin Moonmeadow, female elf Wilder 11
After Summerled's fatal fall and subsequent reincarnation, the party decided that the only way to get across the room safely was to "call out" the elementals and fight them directly. Several party members were dropped into the negatives. Lil, unfortunately was dropped a little too far into the negatives (-13). She was subsequently reincarnated, coming back as a MALE half-elf.
Sorry for the long post, been awhile since I've updated this. Here goes... PC Name: Brother Joshua (Human cleric 9)
PC Name: Zhakarai (Human scout 9)
PC Name: Zhakarai (Human scout 8)
PC Name: Nidget (Tiefling wizard/sandshaper 11)
PC Name: Ixit (Poisondusk lizardfolk druid/warshaper 12)
PC Name: Brother Joshua (human cleric 12)
This brings our campaign's grand total of deaths up to 12. Deadliest fights would have to be the fight with the Kelvos and the 2 sword archons, and the fight against the spawns of Kyuss and Bozal Zahol. Close calls include the battles with The Faceless One and Grallak Kur in Three faces of Evil, and the fight with the Harbinger(maze + paralyzing touch make for great ways to whittle down your opponents!)
PC Name: Helohm Umlochan; 8th level Warmage/8th level Mage Killer
During an epic battle with the mad titan Krathanos, Helohm Umlochan was felled when he was caught in the area of Krathanos’s meteor swarm. Helohm Umlochan was raised by Dominic Cornelius, high priest of Heironious. PC Name: Seamus the Worm; 7th level Wizard – Transmuter/8th level Transmogrifist
During an epic battle with the mad titan Krathanos, Seamus was felled when he was caught in the area of Krathanos’s meteor swarm. Seamus was raised by Dominic Cornelius, high priest of Heironious.
PC Name: Shakar, Human Psion/Sorcerer/Cerebromancer 11 Adventure: The Spire of Long Shadows Location: On the road to Magepoint Catalyst: Possession of the Rod of Seven Parts fragment when the devils arrived. Long Description: The devils arrived and attacked the party. Two of the bone devils isolated Shakar by use of a hemispherical Wall of Ice. Although the party managed to partially melt the sphere, Shakar was badly wounded by the time he tried to fly out of the hole in the roof. An attack of opportunity brought him into negatives. The next round, one of the barbed devls used Order's Wrath, which finished him off. The party's Favored Soul, in an attempt to kill the devils before they could make off with the Rod, dropped a Flamestrike on the area, which, along with killing the devils, left no doubts that Raise Dead, Reincarnation, or Ressurection were out of the question.
St. Segine D'Orvenna, LE, 15 Artificer (Not Blastificer), Human Alumni Lich (Dicefreaks)
Adventure - 12. Dawn of a New Age Location: Modified Age of worms - Kyuss Obelisk Catalyst: No skill points in balance, a rod, and two artifacts that don't play nice together. Segine had two goals, and that was to have one of each item in the game and to always make a profit, even off of his allies. His hobbies include gem crafting and item crafting and marketeering. At first level he bought 25gp in raw material components to make a 75 gp black onyx gem to turn a profit (25->75->225->675->2025) and continued to do this during various breaks in the game(as an artificer at level 17 (15 after lichdom) we calculated that he had accumulated around 600K+ in gold from savings through item creation and from being a gem maker, and when he got fabricate, it was over. Although he did lose almost 8000 exp from item creation)(still have my charactersheet in excel format). The fighter in the group was a spiked chain abuser, and the cleric was a whip user, so Segine had clients. Finally segine at level 17 decided. I am going to boost myself up, and become a lich. We used the one that is on the dicefreaks website to test it for balance and see if there is a requirement for a level adjustment if you abide by the rules. I asked the DM and he approved. So 21500 exp points later, i am a nauseated "Level 2" 15 Artificer Human lich. Still no spell resistance, and he finally gets back to the party.
But as Scott(best friend and DM) said.. Look it's a bird. it's a plane.. no its super clutz. And Robert(Enthax, CE, 17 Barbarian, who used skill ranks to learn to read from a cookbook, and had a fascination with grilled cheese sandwiches) - "I will name a meal after him.. The Segine-wich.." "St. Segine D'Orvenna, a true hero." 660-682 AD
PC Name: Seamus the Worm; 7th level Wizard – Transmuter/8th level Transmogrifist
Suffering from the crushing despair of the Doomshroud’s mournful song, Seamus was driven insane by the Ancient Night Twist. While fleeing in confusion, Seamus was slain by the Night Twist’s half-fiend treant guardians. Seamus was reincarnated after his companions were victorious and now views the world as a dwarf. Note: This is Seamus’ second death on Tilagos Island.
PC Name: Dominic Cornelius; 12th level Cleric of Heironious/5th level Thaumaturgist (AKA: BroCo the Everchanging)
Slain in battle vs. the swords of Kyuss – multiple invocations of the worm are a real b@%$&, especially when one is fighting undead bad guys with greatswords! PC Name: Seamus the Worm; 7th level Wizard – Transmuter/8th level Transmogrifist
Slain in battle vs. the swords of Kyuss and a mature adult blue dragon – while in the form of a remorhaz, Seamus was nearly done in by multiple invocations of the worm. After recovering Seamus was on the wrong side of a dragon’s breath weapon. PC Name: Helohm Umlochan; 8th level Warmage/8th level Mage Killer
Slain in battle by an Angel of Decay – after battling a virtual horde of the swords of Kyuss, Helohm was felled by the claws and rotting aura of an angel of decay. PC Name: Sir Guy Ashmore (aka: Saint Guy the Trapspringer); 14th level Paladin/3rd level Human Paragon
Battling multiple swords of Kyuss and a mighty blue dragon, Sir Guy goes down fighting in an explosive fashion.
Deceased: Barbleu (Barbarian 6/Cleric of Kord 6) & Louaren (Mage 12) Episode: Spire of Long Shadows Cause of death: following quite a long string of rotten tactical decisions, they ended digested by the Overworm of the Sea of Worms Circumstances: characters (6 of them, no less) decided to split at the edge of the long pit from the hall of columns of the Ziggurat (First mistake; actually 2 players decided to go to bed, and agreed that their characters would protect the rear...). 4 others came flying down, and discovered the Sea of Worms. They decided to land an an island of rock in the middle of it, and the Druid went back up and picked up the 2 previous ones, the Paladin and the Sorceress (second BIG mistake: split the group in 3...).
Surprinsingly, they crawled back up to lick their wounds... Rest in peace Barbleu and Louaren.
PC Name: Barg (male half orc fighter 4)
PC Name: Travis (male human cleric 4/wizard 1)
In a prolonged fight in the horseshoe cavern the party had allowed one of the grimlocks to get away and warn the others. The grimlocks grouped above the cliffs to each of corridores (added cliff to route to cleric too) and waited. When the party got close they attacked from above with long spears and swarmed from the other locations. From atop the chieftain hurdled abuse (which the party could not understand) and Barg reciprocated it back. The chief raged and attacked. Barg took the brunt of the attacks from the entire camp and it looked like he was going to survive. But then a crit came in and his hit points suddenly looked a lot smaller. Barg eventually dropped leaving the route open to the trest of the party. Travis took a hit and dropped from another critical leaving a ranger and wizard (a rogue no one had spotted) to fight 5 grimlocks. Fortunately the chiefs rage stopped and he went to negatives. They retreated so that the ranger could use missile fire and eventually - with the fresh rogue - they killed all the grimlocks.
PC Name: Tabitha (female human wizard 5)
Tabitha, the rogue and ranger rested in a rope trick untill they saw grimlocks moving around decided to bail out and attack. They did not expect the cleric and when the rogue failed the will save vs Hold Person things went wrong. I should have coup de grace the held rogue but instead I tied him while the others pushed forward to attac kthe ranger and wizard. A wizard on 15 hit points does not far well against a 8 damage rolled on a critical hit with a battle axe for 33 points of damage. SPLAT!
While not a PC, I still count cohorts in the KIA column: Cohort Name: Bubba-Chomp (15th level Aasimar Fighter) - Planar Cohort of Dominic Cornelius
While heading into the southern section of Kongin-Thulnir, the party was ambushed by Xyzanth, the Wyrm Fang Dragon. After a brief and violent struggle - 4 rounds - the heroes were able to drive Xyzanth off, but at a terrible price: Bubba-Chomp, planar Cohort to Brother Dominic Cornelius ended up on the wrong side of the dragon's lifedraining maw.
PC Name: Fourman Guy (4th level Bard/3rd level Druid/2nd level Arcane Hierophant/6th level Focain Lyrist/1st level Sublime Chord)
Fourman fell in battle with the Dolgaunt minions of Tharizdun that were defending the underground temple of the Dark God. Caught in two Blade Barriers will do that.
I finally have to add to the list. It was kinda ironic and made me feel bad as a DM. I was being a bit of a softie and after one heck of an incredible rescue (don't get me wrong, I always let the characters work, but I apparently have troubles killing them..) The player (one of my best friends) of this character said to toughen up. You can guess what happened; PC Name: Valerius (Lv 11 wizard)
Ilthane nearly killed the fighter, but then took wing and flew to the wizard who had taunted her when they ran at the start of the adventure. She sniffed him out and tore him to pieces. After that, it must be said, the cleric did a big hit, Ilthane tried to flee flying (at 3Hp), but got downed by a lucky magic missile (! penetrated spell resistance), and crushed into the forest. In the aftermath everyone was counting their gold for a true ressurection scroll.. But I still don't like killing characters.. but I guess I'll try this path for a while (since ressurection scrolls are more readily available).
PC Name: Sir Pallas (male human Paladin 11)
Sir Pallas was revivified the next round, and hailed by 25000 spectarors.
PC Name: Kale (male human Fighter/Rogue/Assassin 25)
NPC Name: Sarina, Battle-Maid of Heironious (15th level Celestial Human Favored Soul – BroCo’s Planar Cohort)
At the wrong end of both a Raam’s trample and Brazzemal the Burning’s fiery breath, Sarina was sent to her eternal reward. However, fearing the advent of the Age of Worms, Sarina returned to the mortal realm.
PC Name: Seamus the Worm; 9th level Wizard – Transmuter/10th level Transmogrifist
