Dragonchess

Age of Worms Adventure Path

Okay, I was re-reading the Backdrop article from #124 today while prepping for tonight's session. Tonight is for character creation so I'm still two weeks to a month awayf rom starting the whispering cairn . .

But, the reason for my post was that the mention of Dragonchess got me thinking. I was curious what it looks like exactly. the description is three playing fields of 96 squares. is that 96 per field, 96 in total? The comment of 42 pieces is easy enough to understand. 21 pieces per player, and with seven different named pieces, that's three sets per player, one set per field.

Is this a game that already exsists out there? is it somethignt hat was just pulled out of the head of the writer? If the 96 squares is per board . . . how is it configured? I mean you can't break 96 up into a square like an 8x8 chessboard?

It is out there -- the complete rules are in Dragon #100, as I recall. Looks like a fun game, actually...

Not only does the game exist, but I actually saw a dragonchess set made by a guy I used to work with! My memory is a little sketchy because it was almost 10 years ago, but seeing an actual set is pretty cool. Unfortunately, I never got the chance to actually play a game.

As noted above, Dragonchess was detailed miticulously in Dragon 100 by Mr. Gary Gygax.

The game consists of three different boards of ninety-six squares each. The boards are stacked over each other, like a three tiered chess board. Each level represents the three tangible/visible parts ot existence - the heavens/skies, the Oerth/surface and below/Underdark.

I'll have to look at my Dragon 100 when I get home to determine how the peices work. I can post more details later if you want.

Initially, the players I judge for wanted to "play" dragonchess. But, since it is represented by d20 rolls in the game with the Profession (gambler) Skill, they quickly tired of it, since it became a matter of rolling d20s. I advice not spending too much time on it.

Google is your friend. I found this page which might help you : http://www.chessvariants.org/3d.dir/dragonchess.html

It seems that Canonfire! doesn't have the old DChess.txt file from the old WotC downloads available, so I just forwarded it to the editors list so that it could be posted. Hopefully that'll help :D

The pictures should give you a good sense of the boards' layout.

Thanks, Grodog!

I just forwarded this link to my group currently playing AoW, and thought I'd put the simpler ebay link here as well (without all the searches ;)
