Oblivion Doors

Shackled City Adventure Path

My group is currently in the "Lords of Oblivion" adventure and I was wondering how other groups have faired against the doors in Vhalantru's area?

Did your group successfully figure them out? Did you use them? Did you replace with something or leave them out?

I see this as a hard puzzle that would discourage the group, since it doesn't really give that many clues (or maybe I missed them), so I wanted to know what others did to prevent that.

My group had a really hard time with them. It probably doesn't help that they have been low-leveled for the adventure (but usually with 6 players.)

They DID come up with an fairly ingenious (and slightly gross) way to bypass the doors. They used a flesh to stone spell to create a 1 foot diameter "tube" of flesh through the stone, then use stoneshape to widen the passage so they could, A) push out the flesh sausage, and B) crawl through. Some of the geometry didn't really work, and we had to fudge some things, but I was afraid they would get too frustrated. They did come close to figureing out the secret, but never quite got it.

I had my wizard use the spell passwall to circumnavigate the doors and just tunnel around them. I won't give out any spoilers as to what was contained in any rooms or corridors that we came out of.

For my group I didn't change anything, except Vhalantru, but that's beside the point. When the party descended down into the tunnels and confronted the doors they considered the puzzle for close to 30 seconds before the Ogre Barbarian just smashed his way through them and, if hurt badly enough, waited (im)patiently for the cleric to heal him. Interestingly enough, this was also how they dealt with the doors way back in J'zadirune.

My group wasn't much different - after trying to think their way around it for 35 - 40 sceconds, they settled on brute damage. In the interests of game flow, I let them do it.

They're not much on puzzles.

Reggie.
