Placing Shackled City AP in another setting?

Shackled City Adventure Path

Hello!

This is my first time posting at Paizo forums. I just learned of the existence of the Shackled City and Age of Worms adventure paths a few days ago, but I have been a D&D players since 1990.

I would like to ask three things:

1) What is the basic storyline of the Shackled City adventure path?

2) How fixed in Greyhawk is it? Could it be adapted to another campaign setting? (I play in Mystara / The Known World).

3) Has anyone here adapted it to Mystara ever?

Any info is appreciated.

The basic storyline of the Shackled City Adventure Path is that there's an evil cult in Cauldron, called the Cagewrights, working to open a permanent portal to the prison plane Carceri.

The campaign isn't that fixed to any specific setting, and it's not THAT hard to convert it. If you're interested you could check out the thread Conversion Notes when running the Shackled City campaing in the Forgotten Realms for some ideas what to think about when converting the campaign.

The biggest problems, as I see it, with converting AP have to do with the planar arrangement.

Mystara should have no issues here at all, as the Mystaran cosmology has all the room it could ever need for bizarre and evil planes like Occipitus, and vast armies of Daemodands such as on Carcri.

It does suffer, a bit, from some OMS (Overpowered Magic Syndrome) with nation-states like Glantri and Alphatia that should be able to contain or prevent such problems readily.

As for where to put it....hmm....that's a bit more of a challenge.

My first inclination for where to place Cauldron would be somewhere on the Darokin/Karameikos border. The whole conflict between Cauldron and Redgorge could be a nationality thing as well, with them on opposite sides of the border, and Sassarine could easily be replaced with Selenica.

Another possible location for Cauldron would be northern Darokin, near the Badlands (to account for the rough area and large local half-orc population to draw upon).

The vault where the Mirror of Stars leads...it could be in the Ylari or Sind deserts.

That's my best initial run of thoughts/suggestions for you.

Thanks for the replies guys!

I've placed Cauldron along the Golden Way in the Realms. I've got mountains, desert, and just about everything else. Thesk/Thay conflict thrown in to boot.

Now that the HC is coming out I may have to re-run this with a different group but with Fantasy Grounds (www.fantasygrounds.com) or ScreenMonkey.

Has anyone tried placing it in Judge's Guild, "The Wilderlands" setting? This looks like an interesting campaign world, though I don't have the player's guide (yet).

Also, if anyone can let me know the terrain where Cauldron is located, that would be helpful (sounds like mix of jungle/desert/mountains?- correct?)

I don't know enough about Greyhawk to feel comfortable running a campaign set there. I would prefer to place it in a campaign setting that is new to myself and (more importantly), my players). I have also ruled out Eberron & FR for this reason. If anyone has helpful advice on the Wilderlands or another suggestion, please reply. Thanks.

Is this thread still available? I keep getting sent to the main forum section through this link and I'd really love to check out the tips here.

It seems that they have pruned this thread. Although I still have the document on my laptop, so I could post them again if you're interested. I have made some changes from the original though, so it corresponds to Eric Boyd's conversion notes for Age of Worms.

I'd really appreciate that, Evilash. I'll take any assistance I can find.

the tread is still in the archive

Cauldron itself is a dormant (kindasorta) volcano in a mountain range that runs north/south. The range is surrounded by jungle both to the east and the west. The desert bit has to do with players getting telported "far... far away" in one adventure... Doesn't really come into play unless you want it to.

When you get the materials (if you don't have them already" there's a nice area map labled "Cauldron and Environs" that shows the area terrain you need. I can't remember if it was in one of the Dungeon downloads or not. The AP started before Dungeon was doing the on-line resources as a standard thing, so Caudlron was about half way in before you could get all the maps from the downloads.
