Shackled City Adventure Path


SO at the request of Bulette I am going to do my best at starting a journal of what my party has done.

This first instalment is from life's Bazaar and part of flood season. most of what is wirtten here is acctualy a hand out that i gave my party... there spelling and gramer mistakes (lots of them) sorry... but i should give you and idea of what whent down... i'm going to try and have some more for everyone soon... my party is acctualy just about to start the umberhulk senario so i'm a little behind on the journal...

Life's Bazaar

Each of you started the campaign tied up in the back of a dark wagon with two illumians, one gnome, one half orc, and a Human. A Cleric of St. Cuthbert named Ruphus freed all of you and told a story about stolen people threw out the city including several children from the local orphanage.
Ruphus took the party to the church of St. Cuthbert where they met Jenya the acting church high priestess. Where she welcomed the party to cauldron and tells them about the town and the recent kidnappings and that they should talk to the town guard. However before they went to the town guard she used the Mace to cast a divination spell which left them with a riddle.

The locks are key to finding them,
Look beyond the curtain, below the cauldron,
But beware the doors with teeth,
Descend into the malachite hold,
Where precious life is bought with gold
Half dwarf bins them but not for so long

Soon after party talked to the town guard and was given a list of missing people in the town. They sergeant of the guard also told the party that the town guard has had other problems that they needed to cover and that missing people is a concern of them but it's not something they can spend the resources on.

The Party talked to the Orphanage and a small Halfling woman named gretchyn told the party about the missing children and that they person that come in must have had a key. They also talked to a half-Orc named patch witch seemed suspicious but did not give any information to the party. He also had too much money for a caretaker of an orphanage. The Female Illumian snuck into his room and stone his gold form his room as the human Gargamel distracted patch. She later gave the gold to the Gretchyn for the orphanage.

On the way to the locksmith’s shop they looked down an ally to see two thugs kicking a robed figure that was on the ground. That figure was found to be Rufus.. The thugs had their faces painted half black and half white. And found that they were members of the laughs laugh guild a local and powerful guild in the city.

They PC’s went to talk to the Local locksmith who happens to be the best locksmith in town. He is a Gnome named Kenyan Helve, as they talked to this twitchy gnome who stands on stilts they forced out the fact that he lost his Master key and they have been dark creatures moving in and out of his shop. And they have stolen his rat familiar. As the PC’s moved threw the shop a dark creature moved under the stairs and down a set of stairs.

The PC’s went down the stairs and found a room of masks with sounds echoing threw the room. The dark place under the shop was a Gnome Enclave with gears doors with Gnome letters that had traps on each of them the name of the Conclave was found to be called Jzadirune witch corresponded to the letters (in gnome) that were on the doors. The searched the enclave finding humanoid creatures that were later found to be skulks after finding several rooms of strange things and avoiding traps that they came to a theater that showed a illusion play with Gnomes as the illusionary actors. Under the stage a chocker near killed the party including almost killing the party cleric.

After staying in the church and receiving some healing and a good nights rest the party went back to the locksmiths shop. Where they met to elf’s named fario and fellian that was interrogating the locksmith they later received themselves as an organization called the striders of fharlanghn who are an organization bent on stopping the Cagewrights who were described as an organization that is causing trouble in cauldron who have been aliened with the laughs laugh guild. They soon say that they will have their eyes on the party.

They go back down under the locksmiths shop. And explore some more including teaching two of the party members how to not be stingy when they enter the throne room of the gnome leader of the enclave when asked to place their most valuable coin in a box and they drop coppers in the box each of them take dexterity damage. In the throne they find some gold and a key to one of the doors in Jzadirune. Some more expiations finds several skulks and eventually some dark creepers and a dark stalker who tell the party that they can help they party find the missing children if the remove a strange creature from on of the chambers it was a grell. The Grell caused the party scorcer some major problems until the illuman fighter stabbed it with a dagger in a critical point almost killing the grell… soon there after the grell died and they party found Jzadirune to be a gnome workshop full of automatons and other magical items and workshops. However the party wanted to rest for 3 days and over those three days the gnome cleric Vanished literally.

Just as the party chose to return to the gnome enclave they find a woman in dark robs holding a dagger to an elves neck telling him that all adventures should leave the town or be destroyed as she jumps onto the wall and climbs up the wall like a slider. The elf joined the party and reviled that he was bent on stopping anything from the underdark and if there are any drow they will die.

They go back in to the dungeon and find a door that the party had passed many times that they had never spotted before however the elf found It just by walking buy it. It leads to an elevator that led below the gnome enclave. After discovering a secret room with a lever the would let the party go back up the elevator they went to find the dark stalker that promised to help the party however there were three dark creepers there blaming the party of the destruction of the their leader they party soon found out (after destroying two of them) that the dark creepers had been the ones that were hired to take people form the town.

They party went back down stairs to find a room full fowl waist and filth where they see a creature with many limbs digging threw the waist it was a otyugh it attacked the party with a ogre sized falchion after they killed the creature it changed into a ogre. They party soon enters an open court year with hobgoblins guards they quickly destroy the guards and went back to enter a secret door that the elf found leading to an armory where the party took some supplies and entered yet another secret door that lead to a forging room with 2 Halflings and a dwarf that were chained up however there were several goblins and several hobgoblins their who attacked the party. They party came into a room with 8 hobgoblins position for defense however as the party entered there was 2 large pits that opened up under two of the party members. This created a challenging fight however the party won and cleaned out two more room one with some small ooze like demons and another was a guard barracks. The party when back to the surface and rested at the church except for the elf who stayed the night in a small room and creped round the fortress finding the door the used to enter the fortress had now been caved in. when the party returned they enter a new secret door that the elf found surprising 4 hobgoblins quickly taking care of them and soon finding a hallway discovering that the wall were illusionary when a metal hammer swung threw the wall at one of the PC’s the fight against the automatons took a toll on all of you and the party went crawling back to the surface to rest and heal.

The Party then started down the elevator again hearing strange noses coming from the elevator… However it went down just fine. But threw further inspection the elevator lever had been disabled. So they stared threw the fortress finding that both the secret doors had been sealed after a few attempts at knocking down the big door the cleric cast shatter on the stone secret door and made an opening. They then proceeded to find a treasure trove and the prison cells. They talked to the prisoners and gave them a few things to protect themselves and told the prisoners that they will come back for them soon. The party freed a rouge soccer’s that was been tortured by some hobgoblins then proceed over the bridge, Where they found a duragzden and a half-troll half dwarf haggling over some children. The party attacked a howler and some hobgoblins and a lemer the fight did not go well however a beholder came and took one of the children with no expiation excite telling kazmojen (the half troll half dwarf) that the boy was not to be taken. The beholder then disappeared with the boy. The party was incapacitated and placed in prison cells bound and gagged.

The storm blades and the 5th member of the party came down to rescue them and found all their gear. However kazmojen and his followers had fled into the underdark finding them camped out a few miles into the caves. The party attacked and tried to free the children however they were to much of a mach for the party and killed the elf cleric and the Illumian fighter captured the halforc rouge and the illumine rouge while the scoerce ran back to town.

Flood season

Within the next month Gargemael's (the socer that survieved) house was rebuilt with the help of the church of St. Cuthbert. Jena assigned a cleric to help Gargemel recruit some people to help the city. They found a stout man to fight and limber human with some marshal arts training and strange looking creature with thick hide not sure if it’s a tall dwarf or a short elf… Maybe a thick gnome, to sneak around and open locks, With this group Jena hopes that they will be able to help with the new problem facing thee city. Now that a month has past sense the defeat of the party the new group of adventures have been told that with the rain coming in and the flood festival coming that the lake will flood this year however the churches that normally control the water in the lake to keep if from flooding the city have not made the appropriate wands and most of them churches don’t see this as a problem because the lake has not flooded in over a decade.

The leader of the church of St. Cuthbert went to the capital city to purchase some wands because the church dose not has the rescores to make enough wands to keep the city safe. Jena received a sending spell on the day that he should have returned to caldron. It clamed that he was locked up in the lucky monkey about 2 days travel from caldron. Where an ape man has ravished the INN.

The party left immodestly. After about a days travel the rested being attacked by a group of kobolds that clamed that they had killed the rest of their people that were living below cauldron. The adventurers naturally told them that they were not the people who killed their people. They kobolds attacked and most of them were killed the others were striped of their possessions and sent off.

The party soon reached the Lucky monkey where they desisted to enter from the back door. Where a large Ape man who called himself Tongue eater was hording his money. With some fighting and some raging and some fleeing and some fighting again and some fire and some splatter apes and the fact that the monk was able to get by his DR when he should not have the battle was soon over. The party went threw and cleaned out the rest of the intruders who were all drunk and fighting poorly. In the Basement there was a well with a half/drow that needed to get back to caldron and thanked them for the assistance. She clamed to me a member of the striders a fharlanghn. The strange member of the party did not trust her and fallowed with her on hose back all the way to the Drunken Morgoth Inn where the other striders arranged a meeting with the party. IN this meeting they find that the churches are being supposed and dumb by not helping with the wands collection for the flood season.

They party finds that the wands have been taken by a cleric of Hexor and that the leader of the church of st. Cuthbert has been killed and decapitated and has his toung eaten. Jena is now the leader of the church of St. Cuthbert and has a huge responsibility to the city on her. She urges the party to be swift and find these wands so that they can save peoples lives.

here goes the rest of flood season. i did not have time to spell check sorry i'm sure it has lots of spelling errors i also did not have my notes with me for names so some of the disctptions are vague.

The party still dose not know where to find the wands. But they reaise that the local churches are not helping with the flood as they would normaly. So they go an interview the churches. They start with the church of Cord witch was very bussy and scattered. The Leader of the church of kord took some time to help them however he seemed very rushed and constantly blamed the church of weejass. The next went to visit the Shrine of palor where the young cleric asked them to enter his little living quarters and he offered tea and bread while they talked he seemed very worried about the flood season and told the party that anything that he would help them in any way he could. Also that they would attend church some morning.

They then went to talk to the people at the church of weejas who were not very helpful. They were also defensive. The partys varant duid/wizard/human paragon. (becoming a bard with out taking levels in bard). Desided to climb up to look in on the church of weejass and watch threw a window. All he coulds see is people doing paperwork and moving money around.

They all seemed very stumped and were on their way back to their house to rest (one of them has a house) where a note was left on the door asking to meat him at the brass trumpet at 12:00. the meeting went well the gave information to the party about where to find the cleric of hextor. After a little negociating and some money they have his info… the dark figure also mentioned that if they need any info to ask for him at the brass tumbet.

The party now had a rough sketch of the area around the lava tub however when they got to the area it still took about an hour to find the tub. They went right in. walking in and cathcing the thugs off guard and with some AoO they killed them before the alreat stone could be pushed. However as they were looking around at the wentch mechenisum one of the player pushed the stone in and caused the place to go on aleart. The figured out how to use the cage however all 5 of them (all med creatures) hoped on to the cage. The cage failed it's save about 20 feet down and we argued about how they could not take damage from the fall. I finaly told them that they needed a jump check to get out of the cage fallowed by a swim check or a dex check (d20 + dex mod) to dive into the water and not take damage. They swam to the shor just as the water demon reached them it attacked them at the shor with the party cleric and fighter still in the water. They killed the demon but not without a few stong hits. The party decited to enter from the south and walked in on the halfling just as he was leaving using the air elemental to fight the party he tured invisable and ran to inlist the help of the harpoon spider.

The party then walked threw the chambers killing thugs and allybashers with ease but still falling into traps. The next note worth fight would be with the mudd slaad in witch I had fun making my own screeching noise for it's specail attack. The giant from put up a good fight however the patrty did well striking it and finishign it off soon. The found the clok and money and the partys scocer placed it all in his bag knowing only that something is magic put not what is magical out of what he found. They then went deep into the webed area fighing the threw all the spiders and spider like creatrues finaly ended up in the room with the halfling and the harpoon spider

This fight made me made. One of the players (the wizard drudid human paragon) was enlarged and uses shalalay (sp) to attack lots of damage. So when the entered the room the see the halfling the spider and two other things (can't rember what they were) however I made a big mistake I gave them a crea path to the halfling. And he charaged hiting cit and killing the halfing in wone hit. A villan that should have been a chanlege was aced… I was so mad. The harboon spider dissabled the party fighter in a grapple but the trombed on the spider.

They them went north threw the rest of the place and found terl she put up a good fight almost killing a player befreo the cleric could cast her healing. However she did fall.

They the east and fellinto the blood ozze pit finding the wand of control wanter and getting out of their fallowed by droping a pottle of alchemical fire on in the pit

The went nother threw the undead area fighing the hucava gnole he put up a very good fight smaching and slaming the plarty going first for the elf monk. The party was confused as to how a unded gnole could cast spells and fight so good. It was cool. Also wondering why he went strait for the elf. The quasit attacked creating a flanking position however after one round of attacks from the party he tured invisable and ran of. Just and the cleric asts detect magic pinpointing the want he kept and getting hit by a ranged attack and dropping the want and running off.

Soon the hucava fell.

They then traved to where the spawn of krus (sp) were fighting them and having the clieric almost turn into an spawn herelf when a worm go inot her aromor and the fighter was able to make his heal check to get the worm out.

The party was pissed that all that copper was there the wanted more gold so the left all that copper there.

Soon the faught the garagnutan mega raptor (it worked better than the t-rex) and it wamped on the party because most of them had slashing wepons in witch they could not do much damage too. But it fell with the party almost out of HP.

They rested with only a few thugs left in the complec. I had them runn away.

They now reaised that they have no way to get out of the runins so as they in the wench room at the bottom of the cage. The figher we discoved that the scocers clock was a cloak of aracnia and decited to climb out of the cave and retured with rope and a boat. During this figheter absence they saw the beholder leave ( I added him so that they would think that he is more of a leader amonge the vilans) they all chose to hide.

Also when waiting for the fighter to returen the quasit asked if they would pay for information. (it had no reason to fight now so I wants money before it goes on it's own) they paid it 500gp and he told them that the eyed creature payed the 3 spell casters the gnoll, terel, and the halfling) to make a cage. This was all in a strang gibberish verson of common that I was acting up. Finaly the scocer got mad and intimdated the quasit to give more information it then dissapeared. Soon the fighter came back and droped a rope and lowered the boat. Just as the party was leaving about to climb the robe the kurp attacked and was killed quickly.

The party went strait to jenya who knew the markings on the wands (there were 9 wands they found 7 of them were control water) so she could rush out to take care of the floodiing.

The party was now known for helping the city.

They have sevarl weeks of rest now before their next adventure


The party enjoyed their time off after rainy caudron winter. The Elf monk went to talk to the city authorty about leasing some property (because only old noble camily own land in cauldron) to build a shrine to the mind and body. He was detoured to lord valandrue who dose all the busness with property he seemed bussy and preoccupied. (it was fun)

Other toocare of other tasks and the bard (with out taking levels in bard) was contacted by the striders to help them free their leader ( I choose him for two reason he couldn not be at that gaming session and he is true nutral it works well) however non of the rest of the party knows where he went.

The rest of the party were on their way to buy some new items from maave they heard that he had a new shipment of items in the store. Just as the were approching a large bug creature smashed threw the wall attacking. This was fun beause there were failing their will saves right and left witch gave me an opportunity to have the umberhulk smash lots of buidings also the PC's killed a few common folk. However the city's gerneal opnino of the advnetures is that they did well agains the umber hulk. Including the save the monk made when catching the babie and the figher getting in the way of the umberhulk where it went after the fruit vender. Great encounter with lots of smashing and some good fighting. The half-orc mercanarys all faied their willsaves and the MTA aganes were only of some help but they took controal of the investageson after the summoning circle was found.

That night celest came to see them and gave them the invstaion.

The fighter and the clerica of St. cutherber went out of ther way to have lots of jewer but they did not buy nobels out fits the baugh something worht a little less. The scocer went in his ragged coak of aracnia and the monk snuck in the back door. The bounced at the door pissed of the cleric and the fighter because eh kep on instutino their close and telling them that they wore more jewlarly than their close would sujest. And tell the scorcer to go go get some close. However the monk knocked out a server and took his close so that he could parade around with out question. Soon the rest of the party got the approprate close and was welomed in. A large fat noble man insisted that they play snack the jem in witch he lost and paid out money. And walked off the play for ingust isted of gold peaces. The party was uninpressed with the game and was ansush to meat celset.
We roll played it out just as the book sugested and they took the job imideatly with no question or doubet about the natuter of these people.

They were soon off to meat crazy jarrad. On the way however the faught a displacer beast.

Where the arrived at crazy jarred they were wondering about the strangeless of his hut (the painted hut to look like a casle) just as they were approching the red dragon attacked the hut with jerrad running out like a mad man. Jerad is the highlit of this campain for me he was fun to play and the Players had strange looks on their face form the momnet the spoke. The player killed the dragon with some help from jerrad. And he told the about the pit of the 7 jaws… the made it to the pit and the monk started down the stars first being able to avodie the fist breat weapon that the hydra attacked with (all 7 with 7 saves) he made each and every one of them (he is a monk) then the part attack in all so many different ways the fight was good but not near the TPk that many people on the board though it would be.

The then travedl threw the underdar for sevarl hours encounter some drow that they stomped a drider that put of an ok fight and a Etten that they were able to roypaly there way out of with some food and some gold. I played the each head and a different personality. That was fun too.

The soon parroche dthe lake before the kuo-toan shrine in witch the kuo-toan monk escored the accrss the river on his boat (the socerer lied to him and made is bluff check by on point if he would have lied the would have been in big trouable because they don't have very many good swimmers)

The entered the shire and found the wight eye (wich I had him introduced as white) and cherrit and a missing member of their party (I made up a story line of how he endedup there when he was with the striders). They faught their way threw a few rooms and entered room 5 (the big fight room) the did good worith considering the bard (with out levels in bard) had no spells. They killed all but to sloders and 2 out of 4 wips the on was about to die and ran to get reinforcemts the other was dissared and ran to get a weapon. There was atleast 8 min before ausunta came back but the bard dlimbed up the statue and pulled out one of the glowing eyes. I had no idea what to do so I desided that ausnta would be called to this plan early. And she beat the crap out of the figher and killed the cleric before they all reatred back to caludron. Whre they had the cleric raised and did some shpping finding that the taxes have been raised and that many shops were advertising now include the herbalist that was detailed on this message board (thanks again)

The party went back to the kuo-toan fortress on the way the saw their etten friend again who they convinced to come with them I gave him a name one head is dumb and the other is grum (it was on the spot and the PC's liked it) I was going to Roleplay him some more but my girl friend who can't stand Dnd came over and I did not feel like I could stay in charater it kinda sucked. So I had dumbgrum get into another figh with himself so the PC's left me with some extra food and went along with their bussness. Soon there were back where the kuo-toan monk was resting in his boat about half way arcss the monk went for swim and just as he was climinb into the boat (not knowing he kuo-toan was there) he punched the monk in the face and dived into the water to warn the everyone else.

The pc's desited to climb in via the eyes this time and fond the armoy and hoping to get a way into the 3rd flood (hahah there was'nt on) they went back down and went downltaris to the torcher room and faught the mummie.

That's where we ended our session (my girl friend was giving me evil looks)

Sunday nigth we are gaming again and should see the resuts of the kuo-toan HQ
