where should the party sell their non-magical loot?

Shackled City Adventure Path

My group is coming to the end of Life's Bazaar (we'll probably finish tomorrow) and they are going to have a good amount of loot to sell off (they've only sold a few things here and there so far). I also wouldn't be surprised if they back-track and collect a lot of the mundane weapons and armor they left behind (the wizard has Tenser's disk).

So where should they go to sell all their non-magical loot? Should I just give a flat 50% value for any items they bring back and not worry about the where or the how (or the negotiating process)? (Which is how the AP seems to be written anyway.) They've sold a few things at Zanathor's Provisions (treasure items) and Gurnezarn's Smithy (weapons and armor) but they are going to have a lot more soon. Will these places continue to buy items? Do they have the resources to do so?

Let them keep selling at Zanethor's and Gurnezarn's. You can have them be directed to Tygot's Old Things to sell off some of the artsy loost, it gives a good link to him when he pops up in the Demonskar.

As far as the shops being able to keep buying items, that's really your call. If you want the group to make a trip to Sasserine this early, then you can have the Cauldron shops stop buying items. You can use the town's gp limit as an indicator of when they've flooded the market. I usually will have the shops keep buying mundane stuff until they've reached 75% of the gp limit, at which point the party has sold too many MW rapiers or whatnot. After that they need to find independant buyers, make a trip to another town, or just sit on the extra stuff. It all depends on how much travelling you want your PC's to do. They can always hit up Redgorge and Hollowsky when they flood the Cauldron market.

I used this to introduce several of the NPC's you spoke of, and now following flood season the party has developed relationships with these buissnessmen. Most magical items the party sells go to skie's. I also charged the party 5% tax when they brought all the weapons back from the Lucky Monkey, and the Kopru lair because the passed through the Cauldron gates. They got over when they came through Jzadiurne. I have often thought about having a rival (stormblades, vahalantru) charge them with smuggling.

Following Kopru they had trouble finding a market for all the armor and weapons, so I used this as an excuse to have them seek out Maavu and get them on Magma Ave. for the Umber Hulk attack.

We play tuesday so I will let you know how it goes.

Ooh, I forgot about Tygot's! Good call!

I plan on introducing Skie's very soon as well. Thanks for the help guys!

By the way Walter, where in the AP is your group currently? My group is litteraly on Kazmojen's doorstep. They are a little banged up but I just let them level up (to 4th, party of 5). I emphasized the need to resuce the children soon so they feel a slight need make tracks. Should be interesting.

We will start AP3 tomorrow.

Don't forget though that Cauldron have a gp limit of 3000 gp and an asset of 600,000 gp. After Flood Season they will probably have to sell some loot outside Cauldron.

That means each merchant will buy up to 3000gp worth of stuff right? (I don't have access to the DMG right now) Is there a period of time in which they will start buying more?

Where else could they go to sell stuff? Redgorge has very low resources. Skie's seems to operate on its own economy though.

No DMG here either, but I play 3000gp limit if for purchase of and market value of items purchased, as well as items created. My PC's are just now beginning to look outside Cauldron for some items. Some ideas I have include using merchant contacts to order items (cost will be higher, but saves the time/expense of travel) also allows me to have the transport of said items interupted.

That means merchants will buy and sell individual items worth up to 3000gp (no +2 swords are available), and the town as a whole will not buy or sell more than 600,000gp in a short period of time (selling 255 +1 swords will glut the market). So it's okay for Skie to buy and sell multiple magic items each worth less than 3000gp, as long as she doesn't sell 200 of them.

Oh ok, cool. That shouldn't be too much of a problem I guess. They just finished Life's Bazzaar so I'm not going to enforce it too much yet.

Taking in account the Cauldron gp limit, the distance Cauldron-Sasserine and the effective free time the PCs have during the whole AP, here follows the method I used to have PCs sell their loot:
for goods up to 500 gp value, I give 1% daily chance that someone may be interested (either the local shops, merchants or traveling merchants)
for items from 500 to 3,000 gp value, I give 1% weekly chance (most local nobles or traveling merchants)
for items over 3,000 gp value, I give 1% monthly chance (local nobles, travel merchants or disguised agents either from the Last Laugh and the Cagewrights)
When the PCs get too much armors and weapons, I had the City Guard (backed by Vhalantru and the Cagewright cash) make an offer (40% value) for the entire stock.

If you don't allow the PCs to reach Sasserine too much times (only once in my campaign), this method works. If you use the Book of Exalted Deeds, the Ancestral Relic Feat may be worth the sacrifice of the unused items (however the process takes too much time compared to the AP purposes)

My two cents...
