Great Artwork, not so great overall

3/5

Let me first begin by saying, Jason Engle is the master at any battle map artwork. I'm glad to see him producing work for Paizo as well as D&D.

Engle's art/cartography for this product is spectacular. BUT, I have to give it only three stars because the panels given in this map pack are not the best for game purposes. There are a number of panels with a thin river (or creek) that we've seen plenty of in the D&D wilderness tiles set. It's awful for representing a river and works only for a thin stream.

The panels don't assemble we'll together to make up larger encounter areas. There are a few outstanding panels with the wreckage of a ship but the design of how they lay out is particularly bad.

I love the idea of this set, but wish it worked better for use with multiple encounters with three to four panel set ups.

Announced! Cover image is a mockup.

Very cool. It's nice to see some coastline as that has been conspicous by it's absence in previous map packs and flip mats.

Any chance of Flip Mat: Coast?

The backside of Flip Mat:Pirate Island is a deserted beach/coastline. I'd assume it'd probably work very well in conjunction with this.

Silver Crusade

Aha!

This I did not know. Time for some ordering methinks.

Thanks Sniggevert. :)

The sample tiles are all fixed up and displaying properly now :)

I'm certainly looking forward to this release. I plan on using it for the first part of the serpent's skull adventure path, smuggler's shiv.

Shadow Lodge

This is probably one of the few i'd consider buying in multiples.

I'm not usually a huge fan of the maps - I have alternatives - but I think this one is going down on my list to buy. Its difficult to find gamemaps with nice looking rivers which actually have a selection of bends and curves and straights, imo, and this one looks like it fits the bill.

Nice art but this looks like it might be hard to assemble into a large area for fighting. Instead you end up with a lot of single card encounter areas that look similar.

The tiles are designed to fit together many different ways, and there are ways to create very large areas. I've added another image under the product description demonstrating that.

Cool! That looks very useful.

Good idea. I'd never even thought of that.

In the sample images for this product there is one image that shows all the parts together, showing how the parts can mesh. This is a very good way to show these things off, and something I'd like to see on all the map packs. Gives a nice overview of what your getting.
