Ok, first of all, I don't play Pathfinder AP's, I play in my own home-made campaign in the world of Greyhawk. That being said, these cards are really good! I like the artwork, the descriptions, the style. This is excellent stuff with some less-than-usefull items (siege engine, acorns and stuff but even those can be used creatively... Acorns being goodberries or some such) but also some new and fresh items that haven't been featured before. Really great to hand out! Love them :-)
Holy symbols for Erastil & Gorum are very nice. Some of the other items seem to have a jungle or savage twist to them.
The cards have a very "brittle" feel to them, same problem noted with the Enemies Face Cards deck. But, I'll either have these in card pocket pages in a binder or in a rigid card sleeve, so that is not a real problem.
I would say that this deck is good to add variety to an already existing collection of item cards, but is not that good as a stand alone set. It looks like there is only a small few cards that are tied directly to the KINGMAKER AP.
These cards are so generic it insulting to place then under the Kingernaker title. Even in the first part of the adventure path they have some good discriptions for items. ex the ring of swimming that depicts a frog and a eel locked in a tangle, or the Stag lords helm does not even look near the same as the crummy helm card in the deck.
This deck is quite nice, with some gorgeous art, and intriguing and original takes on common items (like an owl-bear rug), but it's not specifically designed for the Kingmaker AP. Purchasers who are looking for the next generic item deck for their collection will enjoy it, but those looking for one to illustrate the unique items in the AP will be disappointed (I was).
Despite the detailed descriptions on the backs of the cards, they don't directly correspond to specific items in the adventures. Also, while the item description promises "newest and most lordly treasures," quite a few of the cards are for mundane items like a saw, or a bedroll. And while they do offer a complete list of the cards on the website listing, if you're only going by the back of the box, it's a little discouraging to find a ladder and a tent inside.
Part of the problem with the cards is endemic to Gamemastery Items cards in general: If you don't already know exactly how you're going to use these, you won't gain any insight after buying the product. Most players know what acorns or a saw look like, so it's not that useful as a visual aid, and the one card included as instructions does little to assist.
In short, if you already have a system for using Item Decks, this is a solid addition to your collection. If you don't, and you're just trying to spice up your Kingmaker game, save your money.
I've never purchased a set of item cards before. However with all the item management my players have been getting into, I felt that a set for the unique items from Kingmaker would be extremely useful to help manage important items.
I was to be disappointed. Despite the claims on the box, these are generic item cards, and most do not map to any items mentioned in the campaign books so far. Most of the unique items from the first adventure are not to be found here - bar one. From my read through of the second adventure it is the same again.
Instead the pack is filled with generic magical and non-magical items that conflict with the descriptions of any such items found in the campaign. If I had wanted a deck of generic items, I would have bought one of the generic sets.
The art is very attractive, and the idea behind having the cards is great. Just a pity that this is a shameless money grab than a useful deck. Not worth the money.
This set just blew the lid off all the previous sets in quality.
I've been using item cards in my Runelords game since '07, to rather good affect. There have been some great cards through the years in different sets.
The artwork, the choices, the combinations included in the Kingmaker set are extraordinary. Definitely a Must-Have if you're going to run the campaign (just for the crown and sceptre), but for any game these are just great cards.
Some are brilliantly magical. Some are for mundane gear, but all are intricately detailed. I'm planning to show them all to my Kingmaker group (spoilers or no), just to inspire them.
The only thing I hope for beyond this is a list of where each card can be found in the campaign (for ones that are specific to an item).
I opened these up and just loved them. I can not pinpoint it exactly why but they were great.
I see Abyssal, Inc had a hand on these again as the weapons locker so not sure what it could be. The artwork to me is great. In fact while there are similar items available in other packs they were just different enough to me that it seemed like they were new items.
I am truly struggling here trying to explain but I have to say they are great. In fact it tipped me over from having a single subscription to having two subscriptions for the cards.
The potion wasn't the normal bottle like the others but a different shape, dust (I am sure an inventive DM could find a use for it), Herbs (same), scrolls (a scroll is a scroll right....well they seemed cooler for lack of a word. Then there are the odd weapons. Blowgun, siege engine....
