Shards of Alara is the first set in the Shards of Alara block, and is a return to the traditional fantasy setting of classic Magic. This is a large set of 249 cards, which will be followed by two small expansions.

This new set will introduce a new rarity for magic. Booster packs and Tournament packs will contain land, commons, uncommons, and rares, with approximately one out of 8 rares replaced with a mythis rare card. There are 15 mythic rare cards in Shards of Alara.

Several new game mechanics will be introduced as well.

Intro Packs will be released for the first time with Shards of Alara. Intro packs are the perfect way to introduce new players to Magic The Gathering, or to introduce existing players to the themes of Shards of Alara. There will be 5 different intro packs available.

The are 249 black-bordered cards: 15 Mythis Rare, 53 Rare, 60 Uncommon, 101 Common, 20 Basic Lands.

Booster packs will now include one basic land card, replacing a common. The expected contents of a booster is now 10 commons, 3 uncommons, 1 basic land, 1 tip/token card, and 1 rare card. A Mythic rare will appear in the rare slot in approximately 1 in every 8 booster packs. 36 boosters of 16 cards / display
