Immortal Power Lies Within!

Creators of life, forgers of worlds, and rulers of reality—these are the gods and goddesses of the world. They have existed for eons. The countless worlds of the Great Beyond are their playgrounds and battlefields. Yet for all their vast power, it is not the gods of Golarion who shape nations and write history—this task falls instead to their greatest creations: the mortal races of the world. It is through their priests and paladins, their clerics and cultists that the gods make their will known in this world, be it for good or ill.

In Gods and Magic, you will learn not only of the core twenty deities of the Pathfinder Chronicles campaign setting, but of a multitude of other deities whose flocks, while smaller and more isolated, have just as much potential for greatness. Yet this book isn’t just for clerics—religion and faith are important factors in the lives of many, be they stalwart paladins, brave rangers, mysterious druids, or dedicated monks. Even those whose talents lie beyond the divine, such as the scholarly wizard or the god-fearing barbarian, find that faith has its advantages.

Within this 64-page book you will find:
  • Detailed descriptions of the core twenty deities of the Pathfinder Chronicles campaign setting, complete with symbols and full illustrations
  • Details on over 40 additional deities, including the gods of dwarves and elves, gnomes and halflings, giants and dragons, and more
  • Over 20 new spells associated with the most powerful religions, yet usable by both arcane and divine spellcasters
  • Dozens of new magic items keyed to the world’s religions, ranging from minor trinkets to powerful artifacts

FullStarFullStarFullStarFullStarFullStar Great book if you're running in Golarion
Reviewer: MisterSlanky

I've always been a sucker for books covering the deities of gaming worlds, and Paizo hasn't disappointed (yet again).

This book is very well illustrated and contains a lot of solid information to help both GMs and players alike in understanding the Gods of the Pathfinder world. If you're planning on using the core rules and aren't planning on developing your own pantheon, I'd strongly suggest picking this one up. The only sicking point I had for the book was that the less popular deities (specifically racial deities and Besmara) didn't get nearly as many words as they deserved.

The content of this book really is five-star material, but I dropped it to four simply because if you're running homebrew or any of the other major pre-developed worlds out there, the materials contained within won't be a whole lot of extra use to your campaign.

Great artwork and wonderful articles on the deities.

First of the Pathfinder line that I have bought and I am completely hooked.

Worth every penny.

It really is quite phenomenal expansion on the gods of the pathfinder world, though I would not object to further details on the lesser gods and deities. Awesome work by Sean K Reynolds, first class artwork as always.

Lots of detail and material on major gods but minor gods left somewhat cold.

I hope minor deitys got own booklet in future that give some more info of them

Reviewer: Kassil

The simple presence of 'The Ghost of Malthus' in Abadar's entry is enough to win me over for this book; props to Paizo for the inclusion of a not-very-well-known figure from our own recent history, in a role that suits the original Malthus quite well.

The book as a whole is well-organized and concise, and has useful tidbits scattered all through it.

A complete guide of pathfinder's pantheon, really good reading material, a must have for everyone in need of a deeper more accurate golarion knowledge

FullStarFullStarFullStarFullStarFullStar Plain Awesome
Reviewer: dsancho

If your group is playing in Golarion you *need* this book. It details each one of the twenty major faiths in the game world, which is something all divine spellcasters need to know. Although there is some crunch, most of the book is fluff, which will help role-play any character and can prove vital especially to clerics but also to druids, monks and paladins. As usual, SKR delivers the goods. Clear writing and a lot of great ideas inside. Some typos here and there but not enough to keep you away from it. This is really a five-star product. Definitely recommended.

Reviewer: Eric Hinkle

Just got this book myself, and I'm already blown away. More fluff than crunch, it lists legends of the major deities, their portfolios and appearances, and their churches with admirable depth considering the brevity (which is my sole complaint, as I would gladly have paid more for even more information). It also goes into some detail about many more deities worshipped by beings ranging from dwarves to monsters. Even the art is great!

Truly a worthy buy at the price.

FullStarFullStarFullStarFullStarFullStar Best Deities Book So Far By Any Publisher
Reviewer: Krome

I received this book as a Christmas gift.

First, the quality of the book is fantastic. The binding is superb and the paper has great color and is heavy enough to put up with a good amount of abuse.

The 20 major deities of Golarion are examined in more detail than before. Each major deity is accompanied by a full color illustration. The text of each deity is divided into a section about the deity's history and objectives- a great way to get a feel of what each deity represents, and a second section about the religion of the deity.

The section of religion is by far the most useful to clerics and anyone who plays a character in a religion. This section has been sorely lacking in other company's publications.

After the 20 major deities are examined, there is a chapter for additional deities, including racial pantheons. The final chapter contains items and artifacts that are interesting and useful for players and DMs alike.

Overall I would say that this book is the best deities book released by any publisher.

The ONLY downside is there are a few typos spread throughout the book. So far, nothing that causes a problem in understanding the text.

FullStarFullStarFullStarFullStarFullStar Good sample of interesting deities
Reviewer: najas latep

This was a really interesting book. The gods flesh out a very creative pantheon that ranges between archetypes many are familiar with (the fickle goddess of lust, the heroic knight, the mad god, etc) but each of those is well done.

There are also some interesting gods like the dualistic god of nature and gods that represent the varied stages of civilization and its developments.

I found many of the gods to better represent deific forces much like those of the Greek Pantheon rather than powerful beings with more human mentalities.

If you are looking for a good sampling of premade deities you can't really go wrong with this book.

Besides a full illustration of the deity (which is cool), what more does this section have as compared to what is already in the Campaign Setting?

In addition to gods, the book will also contain magic.

Perhaps my question wasn't clear enough: how much flavor or what new info will be included about the 'main gods' that is not already in the Campaign Setting?

From a quote by James Jacobs-

James Jacobs wrote:
We'll have illustrations of all 20 of our core deities in this book. Each of these 20 deities will have a 2 page entry, similar in style to the new monsters we've done in the Pathfinder Bestiary. The main difference is, of course, that the gods don't have huge stat blocks; their "stat blocks" will be relatively short and contain info like domains, areas of concern, favored weapons, holy days, etc. The rest is gonna be flavor and crunch; I believe we're going to aim to have a new spell for each deity for clerics, for example. Then, in the later third of the book, we'll have lots of symbols and other illustrations relating to various lesser faiths and magic spells and items tied to the world's religions.
But the cornerstone of the book will indeed be those 20 full-body illustrations of the core 20 deities. Some of them have already started coming in and they look neat!

From Sean K Reynolds-
Sean K Reynolds wrote:
The book doesn't have enough room to do prestige classes for the faiths; we're reserving that for the PF articles, which can devote 6-8 pages to a particular deity.
Basically the breakdown of deity writeups is like this:
1) Super-short entries or one-column writeups like in the PFCS. This is the bare-bones you'd need to run a worshiper of this deity.
2) Moderate-length entries, like in Gods & Magic. Gives more info, a custom spell, and extra flavor. This is what I'd consider the "standard" writeup for a deity.
3) Full articles about a single deity, such as the ones for Abadar, Lamashtu, and Desna. Here's where you get tons of extra info, such as descriptions of celestial or infernal servants, a prestige class/substitution class levels, stat block for the herald, a new spell or two, myths, aphorisms, etc. ... you probably won't get a more extensive official writeup of a Golarion deity unless private investors get involved. ;)
The G&M book gives each of the 20 major deities a 2-page writeup, an illustration of the deity, a new spell unique to that faith, basic tenets of the faith, a summary of typical worshipers, positive and negative intervention, a description of the Herald, names of several noteworthy supernatural servants, relations with other deities, what sort of classes may become priests of the church, duties and responsibilities of priests, specialized skill or feat requirements for priests, a description of a typical day in the life of a priest, a description of a typical temple, when daily prayers occur, the power structure of a particular temple and its relation to other temples of the church, ritual garb/formal raiment, typical practices in a religious service, and a new minor magic item.
For the other gods of Golarion (such as Groetus and the other "minor" gods mentioned in the PFCS, as well as the giant & dragon deities from PF#4 and the minor deities of the prominent races) the book expands upon these writeups (and in the case of the giant and dragon deities, summarizes that info, as we don't want people to have to rely on two books) and gives a little more info on the minor deities that have only been name-dropped so far. Most of these get a minor magic item as well.
The magic items chapter also has some info on a few artifacts, some of which were mentioned briefly in earlier issues of PF.

Hope that helps clear things up some.

It does indeed; thank you -that was exactly the sort of information I was seeking.
