Clan Battle, A Stonehenge War Game by Nicholas Tolle
After creating my first rule set for this game, "Druid Olympics", I wanted a game that would be simpler to explain and could be set up and explained to friends that had not played before. After all, there are some times when you have several people together wanted to do something that's quick and fun and don't want to spend half the game looking back at rules to see what they are supposed to do in certain situations. This game is simple to set up, easy to explain, and fun to play.
Game Rules
Number of players: 2–5
Object of the game: You are one of many Celtic clan leaders trying to become the next king. To do this you must either kill all opposing clan leaders or kill the current king.
Getting Started
Equipment: Clan Battle uses the board, the five trilithons, the deck, every figure (including nuetral figure), 10 disks and 10 bars of each players' color, and 5 disks and 5 bars of each non-player color.
Setup: Place the trilithons in the center of the board. Place one disk (guard) on each outer ring space of the same color (i.e. red disk on spaces 5, 11, 17, 23, and 29). This includes the non-player colors. Place one bar (wall) in inner ring in front of each disk of the same color. Each player places the other five disks and bars of their color in front of them in a stock off the board. The only spaces that should contain no guards or walls are the black spaces. Put the nuetral figure (current king) on the alter stone. Put the other five figures (leaders) into the capstone of a trilithon. Shuffle the deck and decide which player is going first. Play continues clockwise.
Playing the Game
On each player's turn they will draw a card. They then may choose to play a card or draw a second card. If they draw a second card their turn ends immediately and play passes to the next player. If they play a card the action depends on the card played.
Playing a numbered card: If the numbered spot is empty that player may place one of their guards from their stock into that space. If the space contains one of that player's guards the player may build a wall from their stock on that space. If it already contains a guard and wall that player may place another wall peice to help fortify that space. There is no limit as to the number of wall peices allowed on one spot so long as that player still has wall peices to draw from their stock. If the space contains an enemy (or nuetral) guard and wall then destroy that wall. It goes back to that player's stock. If there is an enemy guard, but no wall, kill the guard. It goes back to that player's stock. If there is a wall, but no guard, the player may put one of their guards in that space. Players may play multiple cards to add to a higher number.
Playing a trilithon card: Flip the next card from the top of the deck. The color indicates which leader will die. Remove this leader from their trilithon and take their guards off the board, but leave their walls up. This player is out of the game. If the leader is already dead or the color is of the player who played the trilithon card then nothing happens and their turn is over. Players may hold on to trilithon cards just like any other card until they choose to play it.
Ending the Game
When all other players or the current king is killed the game ends. If all other players are dead (this does not include nuetral figures) the player left is the winner. If the current king is killed then the player with the most guards on the board wins. If tied then most walls breaks tie. If still tied then the one who controls the highest number on the board wins the tie.
Nicholas Tolle has been playing, modifying, and creating games for years. He felt that this would be a great way to get some of his ideas out there to the masses and hopes that they enjoy playing them as much as he enjoyed creating them. He abandoned his plans for world domination after playing "Risk" and finding that he could take over the world without having to worry about those pesky revolts that would challenge his reign as supreme and dominant ruler of the world, and soon the universe.
