It’s winter! Time for a cold spell!

Of all the damage types, fire and lightning seem to get all the best coverage. Maybe it’s because fireball and lightning bolt are quantum leaps forward in the offensive arsenals of low-level sorcerers and wizards, or just that there’s a limited amount of space in any core rulebook, that an idea like an Ice cleric domain or a Cold wizard specialty that’s separate from the more material idea of elemental water is overlooked. But that doesn’t explain their absence from rules expansions? Why are there so few new options to keep characters in the cold?

The Genius Guide to Ice Magic aims to fix that by presenting new cold and ice spells (including at least one spell for every level), and a broad range of new class options designed to help spellcasters who want to focus on the magic of cold and ice.

Now available!

Hyrum.

Nice work, overall. I had never actually noticed that there was no bloodline for cold/frost or Domain. I guess the only thing I would actually question is the autocrit on Iceshockle when its a ranged attack. I know it ends the spell, but that's still a pretty powerful punch.
Considering the amount of 3E and 3rd party spells floating around out there, great job on not treading old ground!

Seriously considering getting this one, just a quick question, does it have only spells or a miriad of ice related stuff?

It's got spells, a new domain, a new bloodline and other ice related stuff. :)

While cold/ice/snow realted spells are the heart of this book, it does also have a the ice domain for clerics (and druids), frost bloodline for sorcerers, cold specialization for wizards, arctic template, simple rules for ice elementals, and the Cold Focus feat.

too late, got it already hehe

The quick and dirty ice elementals were pretty nifty I must admit

Always been a huge fan of ice based spell casters. Put this in my cart to buy next week.

What about us Earth-based Sorcerers??? Us acid folks never get any love!!! :)

Maybe if you were sweeter people you´d get some love.

I tried to give an honest review. Undeadlord, does you GM allow spells of elemental descriptors to be learned differently or can you use your elemental powers to convert it as an earth sorcerer?

I built a cleric dedicated to Thor. Weather and Cold domains sporting a warhammer. We'll see how it pans out this weekend.

How does this book treat the Humble Bard?

I've always wanted to play an earth-based dwarven druid, but there is nothing out there for this idea. Any plans for an earth-based sourcebook?

Bards got one spell and then there is a few feats they could take. But all and all not much here for bards.

Okay, I picked this up last night. Overall, I really like it. But I can't help but notice some small errors throughout.

1) The biting wind spell says it causes "subdual" damage. This should be nonlethal damage.

2) The algid aura spell says that the caster gains the cold "descriptor" for the duration of the spell. This should be subtype. Further, it says that that makes him take double damage from fire; a creature with the cold subtype should have fire vulnerability, which means that they take +50% damage from fire, not double damage.

3) The iceshockle spell says that since one of the caster's hands is covered by the spell, he can't cast spells with "Somatic" (the capitalization is from the book, and isn't necessary) components for the duration of the spell. This is incorrect, as spellcasters need only one free hand to cast spells with somatic components.

Osirion (Contributor; Developer, Super Genius Games)

Legit complaints all. We'll get it fixed, replaced, and updated for everyone who has bought a copy.

At least I didn't have peopl saving vs r/s/w or dealing differet damage vs large creatures. Sometimes, I wish I could vacuum some old rules out of my head...

Maybe you could do a deal with WotC for a one-time use of their illithid IP to help out with that problem? ;-)

Is that going to cause a balance problem? Iceshockle is a pretty strong spell and the somatic restriction is a good check.

Maybe ice both hands, the iceshockle on one and a thin shell on the other causing ASF % to go up like wielding a shield, but grant a +1 shield bonus the off hand if nothing is held there...

Hmmm... no, this probably makes the balance problem worse... ???

I looked at that. It's 4th level, so the melee aspect is honestly not that good given a wizard's base attack at that point. And the ranged attack, evena s a critical, does 6d6 with a ranged touch attack required. I think it's fine.

i like the feel of the ice sorcerer. i have a player that has made one and its working out great.
thanx for putting out quality products.
(any chance for a sonic sorcerer/wizard?)

i meant sorcerer/cleric, not wizard. sorry.

A LOT of our products are direct responses to fan requests, so I'll absolutely add a sonic magic book (probably called either Song Magic or Thunder Magic, depending) on our list of things to get too.

Yes, Thunder Magic please!

"Song Magic" sounds like a book for Bards. Maybe not a bad idea down the road*, but as a sequel of sorts to Ice Magic, Thunder Magic seems the way to go.

*Assuming of course you don't want to look at Monte Cook's take on Song Magic in Complete Book of Eldritch Might.

I dunno. "Thunder Magic" seems like it could be easily misinterpreted as being about electricity magic.

...assuming, you know, that nobody read the product description or anything.

Well, the players in my campaign are about to have the BIG BOSS FIGHT that will end Part 1. They have been doling out the fireballs, fire breath attack (gold dragon/dragonrider) and enjoying nice fire resistance/fire immunity. As the campaign started in Brevoy and worked its way down to Isarn (and even had bits in the Fog Peaks), they've been dealing with a lot of fire vulnerability.

Well, now they are in Absaolom and it's time to turn the tables. :)

I just rolled up a lvl 5 human alchemist with frost bombs and a lvl 5 Wyrd ice wizard. :) (I'm throwing in 4 lvl 4 Rokugan ninja and a lion to fill out the CR)

hehe -- can't wait to use this one!!

There is something strangely appropriate about a wyrd ice wizard. :D Lemme know how it works out!

Yeah I have been meaning to review all the 3pp pathfinder products for awhile, since many have only one or no reviews. Started this weekend with some and was just really bored this morning so I cranked a bunch out. :)

well, put me in the boat of asking for a GUIDE TO ACID MAGIC. There's a lot more ice spells than acid spells. every campaign i get players that make sulfur and chlorine spells that do acid damage and sicken, blind, weaken. would be nice to have some new spells that expand acid spells and are more creative than "it does x acid damage and x damage over x rounds"

Osirion (Contributor; Developer, Super Genius Games)

Your vote has been heard and added to the list. :D

I will note you might find the Caustic Hex feat to your liking (from the Genius Guide to Feats of Spellcasting), and the upcoming Genius Guide to Earth Magic (likely out next week) has a few acid spells, of which lye field and wall of caustics are slightly more interesting that just dealing acid damage.

I started kitting out my Wyrd Ice Wizard last night, and everything is going splendid thus far. Especially since the party leveled up and I was able to add 2 more levels to His Fridgedness. :) Getting very close to the boss fight!

The idea that a wyrd ice wizard exists just warms my heart. Which is not as appropriate as it might be...

Also, I'm gonna hafta use "his frigidness" somewhere.

The ONLY thing I would have loved to see is the ice elementals summons scale with the wizard's caster level. Say, one size for every 3 CL. This way the spell will be usable beyond just CL4 ... just my 2 cents.

Owen,

Ran the Wyrd Ice Wizard as part of the boss fight on this piece of terrain.

Wizard was lvl 7, equipped with a Rod of Metamagic [Quicken] and a few scrolls for extra 'umph'. He was on the raised level.

Rest of the antagonists were a lvl 7 alchemist equipped with cold bombs and four lvl 5 ninja (My Pathfinder'ized version of the excellent Rokugan ninja).

The villains had the upper hand for the majority of the fight and the party slowly climbed to the advantage. In the end, the wizard did what any decent villain would do -- cast Wall of Ice and ran out a secret door! There were a few nail biting moments, when the wizard caught the fighter in a Hold Person spell and the ninja just started WAILING on the guy! (A well-placed fireball made short work of them, however)

And then the Paladin one-shot'd the alchemist! It was a thing of beauty ... :)

The Ice Wizard handled like a dream. In the end, I didn't use the summon spell because it would have overpowered the bad guys too much and would probably have ended with a TPK. Having that extra little bonus from cold spells (along with the Energy Substitution feat from Complete Arcane) made this guy a BEAR to take down. (It didn't help the party much that the ranger was missing every shot, either!)

The image of the dark-blue skinned Wyrd wearing all white, flowing robes made a great visual for the battle, too.

As a side note, the player's party includes a lvl8 Archon, which is another Genius class I really like.

Cheliax (Pathfinder Roleplaying Game, Adventure Path, Campaign Setting, Tales Subscriber)

Just wondering when we can get fire and air.

This is all REALLY cool to hear. I'm glad the products are working smoothly at your game table!

Glad you asked! (Honestly, I'm even just glad you care!) Air is scheduled to come out later this summer, hopefully to coincide with a fantasy movie with strong air themes. :D Fire is likely to be a several weeks after that, since I don't think fire casters are hurting for options out of the core book. (Which isn't to say I don't have some new ideas to offer -- I just want to get the other elements in first.)

Speaking of which...my daughter, niece, and nephew are attending a 7 hour Twilight marathon showing all three movies tonight followed by The Last Airbender tomorrow night - oh to be young! So with an air themed movie hitting the streets...I was just wondering/hoping...can we expect anything Genius this week?!?

And for the record I'm hoping for an air magic guide, not a glittery vampire supplement.

Osirion (Contributor; Developer, Super Genius Games)

THIS week is a new class which is NOT air-themed. NEXT week... next week should be a breeze.
