It’s winter! Time for a cold spell!

Of all the damage types, fire and lightning seem to get all the best coverage. Maybe it’s because fireball and lightning bolt are quantum leaps forward in the offensive arsenals of low-level sorcerers and wizards, or just that there’s a limited amount of space in any core rulebook, that an idea like an Ice cleric domain or a Cold wizard specialty that’s separate from the more material idea of elemental water is overlooked. But that doesn’t explain their absence from rules expansions? Why are there so few new options to keep characters in the cold?

The Genius Guide to Ice Magic aims to fix that by presenting new cold and ice spells (including at least one spell for every level), and a broad range of new class options designed to help spellcasters who want to focus on the magic of cold and ice.

FullStarFullStarFullStarFullStarEmptyStar One of the better Ice magic additions
Reviewer: Dark_Mistress

This product is 10 pages.

It adds 13 new spells, 1 new Sorc bloodline, 1 new Wiz speciality and Ice Domain. Along with a new feat Cold Focus (add +2 to DC of cold spells) and a new monster template, Arctic.

The spells are mostly interesting and seem balanced. Several of them are based losselly on existing spells. I would have liked to have seen a few more inventive new spells, that really fit the concept*. If it had, had more spells like that i would have given it 5 stars likely. I do hope they do a follow up book to this. Perhaps a elements book that adds in more spells for all 4 elements including a lot more ice spells.

*Example of what I mean. they have create ice a cantrip that makes a 5 ft sheet of ice. But I would have liked to have seen this expanded and the level increased.

FullStarFullStarFullStarFullStarEmptyStar I'm a sucker for cold magic
Reviewer: KnightErrantJR

I agree with the premise in the beginning of this article, that cold magic could really be expanded. I still have some things that I'm wondering about, after having read through this.

I love the idea of a spell that creates rough terrain, but I'm not sure that the level is quite right. I'll have to think about it, but its a great idea.

I'm pretty sure the avalanche spell has a typo, in that it mentions the avalanche affecting characters as if it was Bull Rushing with a CMD of X + X . . . I'm pretty sure this is suppose to be a CMB instead, but its a minor typo, unless I'm really misunderstanding the spell.

I really like the cold bloodline for the sorcerer, but I'm not sold on the cold specialist wizard, perhaps because I'm still wondering if there will be an official option for elemental wizards, and if there is, I'd like to see how they look first before I can judge how this would stack up.

Overall, again, for the price, this is an excellent buy, even if you don't end up using everything out of it.
