Here in Loot 4 Less II: Pretty, Pretty, Rings we're looking at just the cheapest of rings, easy items any character can use. Not only do we provide each item with a full description and cost, we've scattered sidebars throughout the book to explain those costs. Each Behind the Counter sidebar explains how a price was arrived at, allowing GMs to apply the logic to other abilities (and be better able to change the pricing to match the needs of their campaign, with a firm knowledge of where the numbers come from).

Welcome to the second book in the Loot 4 Less line, where we deal exclusively in items with a cost-to-consumer of 2,500 gp or less. That's right: no epic items, twelve-spell staves or even moderate magic items here. This is a forum for the cheapest of the cheap, and that's it. And just to up the level of difficulty, we also don't deal in one-shot (or even two- or three-shot) magic items. No scrolls, potions, talismans or fire-and-forget tattoo magics here. Everything in these pages is a legitimate permanent magic item, free of charges and able to be used in adventure after adventure.

Great Value - Good in Both Quality and Quantity

You get 30 item, 3 "Behind the Counter" sidebars that break down the price/crafting requirements for specific items, and a discussion of alternate equip slots for rings. It's all very good content and very useful for anyone who runs/plays lower level encounters. 2-3 more "Behind the Counter" bits would be nice, but aren't a deal breaker. I'm always a fan of art in my supplements, so add a quality color 1/4-1/2 page illustration and I would give it a 5.

Best Treasure Book I've Purchased

Over the years, I haven't bought many books that just listed items. The few I did purchase were hit and miss; the PDF ones mostly miss.

This is a fabulous offering.

I will always view this as one of my best purchases, not just because of the creative and imaginative items and entries, but because the sidebars about how they came up with the price for each item totally changed the way I think about magic items.

This is laid out in landscape so that an entire page fits in your laptop screen without having to scroll up and down to read the whole page. Thanks!

Excellent Product

Some particularly inspired and useful ideas that players (and NPCs) can benefit from very early on; the range of low cost rings presented here offers great new variety for both low level and low magic campaigns.

Great value

The item is exactly what it claims, a solid mix of inexpensive rings. The layout and art is fairly plain in a utilitarian way.

As for the items, they are all solid. I don't anticipate using most of these but I will probably slip at least a couple into my current low level campaign. My players are always looking for magic items, this will keep them quiet for a bit :)

With a product like this and the pricepoint the rating is very much based on value per dollar. You could likely make a lot of these items yourself but this will save you the time. There are also some nice designer notes to help you extend what is in here.

One final comment, don't expect anything extremely flavorful in here, the items are solid but fairly plain. This isn't a complaint, more the nature of inexpensive items.

Good Value For Low Price PDF

The Genius Guide to Loot 4 Less Volume 2: Pretty, Pretty, Rings
Production: 7/10
I loaded up the PDF and was thrilled to see it fit the format of my widescreen laptop. I see too many 8.5” x 11” formatted PDFs that I’m never going to print out. With that said the internal layout was simple and very readable. The column layout is a bit awkward at times but never makes it unreadable.

Art: 8/10
I’ll be honest, at this price point I all I expect out of the art is that it not be distracting. Instead, we get a quite competent cover (no that isn’t an insult, being a competent artist is not easy) and respectable internal art.

Text: 8/10
The writing and editing are decent. Not all rings are in a style to my liking but are all reasonable and will probably find fans. I enjoyed the section entitled “Ring’s Upon Your Fingers” which discussed the wearing of more than 2 rings or in various places on the body without the painful resorting to expending feats for the simple sake of customization. I should note that there were a few spelling and grammatical errors such as that same section title. Ring’s there is possessive while it should be plural (no apostrophe). Over all there are very few such errors though and in the age of Microsoft Word often deciding it knows grammar better than you do many a writer has had egg on their face for hitting accept one time more than they should. The logic behind the items was sound and gives some guidelines for creating new items.

Overall: Pass
I judge products on a pass fail basis of would I allow their content into my games. This passes. Additionally, I think it was a good value if a niche product.
