This scenario consists of 16 pages, 1 page OGL, 1 page scenario sheet, 1 page front cover, 1 page credits, 2 pages scenario missions.
The scenario missions are ok, nothing to write home about, but they are flavorful and not all are generic fetch-me-my-mcguffin-stuff.
That leaves 11 pages of adventure in the mana-waste. We get a ghost-town, mana-waste style, brutal battles with creatures with DR in an area where magic is very unreliable and some awesome fights. The players also get at least some freedom with their decisions, a task that is not boring or menial and we get some nice maps. The final fight is also really cool.
It's an awesome adventure for experienced players and strong PCs, though. "Lost at Bitter End" ranks among the more difficult Season 0 scenarios, without being too hard.
Plus: Your PCs will actually feel like they accomplished something in this scenario! Nice!
Why not 5 stars, then?
It's atmosphere and fluff, while very good, are not as good as e.g. in "Decline of Glory".
We had fun playing this one.
We played this scenario at level 7-8 with a full and well rounded group of players. It was challenging but not overly hard. I would say you need some decent healing for this scenario.
The story was linear but flowed nice and had a few twists here and there. The scenario used Pathfinder back story to good effect and all the players at the table enjoyed the story.
I have a few "signature" spells like silence and I use them to good effects in most mods. This was the first mod that had me actually go harrumph a couple times. I was out foxed by well made opponents. I had hella fun in this scenario and hope to see more scenarios in the future from
Joshua J. Frost.
If you are a GM whose players have cake-walked through the last few Tier 6-7 scenarios, Lost at Bitter End will serve up your players 4 hours of humble pie. Even the most lame-dice GMs will find it a challenge to keep PCs alive in this PFS bloodletting. OK, OK, it’s not that bad but I’m just trying to warn you that this scenario should not be approached lightly. Don’t let anyone tell you that you can get along with bringing an under-strength, unbalanced or otherwise tactically unsound party into this scenario. This is a combat-intense scenario. Role-play, unless between players, is as common here as magic in the Mana Wastes. The faction missions are getting tougher, so be prepared to work for them for a change. Campaign setting flavor is mild, but what can you taste but salty grit and your own blood in this magic-dead no-man's land?
If you take anything away from this review, just remember that you can always run away and live to fight another day. Or can you?... [duhn-duhn-duuuhhh!]
