The following errata has been made available for the Core Rulebook (this errata has already been incorporated in the Fifth Printing) Last updated 11/22/2011:
This book amazes me even though I have been involved with pathfinder since the initial beta release. A credit to Paizo and the gaming industry as an example of how it should be done. 600 pages and beautifully laid out makes the final release of Pathfinder core rules well worth the cost asked. BUY IT!
I recently looked at a friend's copy of the core rule book and I was impressed. The whole product is a high quality improvement over 3.5. I will be purchasing this book and other products in the Pathfinder line-up. You're sure to get a lot of value for your money.
I picked this up at my local store, having no idea that Paizo was releasing their own RPG. I was hesistant at first and didn't pick it up for a couple weeks. I would open it and page through it some each time I went to the store. Finally the visual treat that this book is won me over and I purchased it. I'm glad I did as it is well worth it's price. Full color and well constructed, it is the way books should be made.
It has some much needed changes to 3.5 and gotten rid of some things that were unneccesary. I had grown tired of some things in 3.5 and stopped playing prior to 4.0. My group and I didn't want to play 4.0 when it came out as it doesn't fit our idea of a good set of rules. I had looked at other games but never really played anything else. This plus all the other Pathfinder campaign products has rekindled my desire to play again. I see a Pathfinder campaign in my future because of this book!
... for giving the Pathfinder RPG Core Rulebook 5 stars. Even if it has some errata, and bits of rules that one may disagree with, it is the result of an RPG milestone, and a work of art at the same time.
I've been playing RPGs since the 80s, and I can't think of any time, ever, that so many players were actively involved in the evolution of a game system. Part of it is enabled by the advent of the internet, but the majority of the credit goes to the pros at Paizo that looked to the fanbase for inspiration and relentless playtest. The interaction only made us all hungry for more!
The end result is a weighty tome that made me smile just at the sheer size of it! It's awesomely huge! The cover art is a phenomenal WAR piece that sets the tone perfectly. Graphically, the layout is decorative without being distracting, and the text is easy to read. It shouldn't even need to be mentioned, but the ink doesn't smudge... <ahem> It smells great too!
The sheer volume of game rules included is boggling - it has all of the requisite players rules - basics, races, classes, equipment, spells; along with game system - combat, magic, skills, feats; and GM guides, including prestige classes and magic items. The only thing it DOESN'T have is monsters! It really is a comprehensive RPG tome, on par with the old WFRPG in levels of "complete-ness".
I'm not going to spend much on the rules themselves, as you should already know they are an updated D&D 3.5. If you are new to Paizo, the best part is 95% of them have been thoroughy playtested and revised over the last couple years, so you can join in knowing you aren't getting a gimp revision!
In summary, I am very happy with the PF RPG rulebook - I was expecting something excellent, which is the Paizo standard, and got something extraordinary! Not only is it a historical moment in RPG evolution, but a superb product.
I hope the 4e devs take note - PF RPG shouldn't be looked at as a competing product, per se, but the production values of this tome have set a new standard in excellence.
I downloaded and printed every version of the Alpha, bought the print-version of the Beta, and now I have the final.
FULL COLOR pages.
A page count that puts Arcana Evolved to shame.
Mechanics that streamline combat into something to look forward to.
Compatibility with those three-dozen books and magazines on your shelf.
The PFRPG is worth every bit of the price.
The character classes of the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game are very good balanced and are more fun to play from level 1 to 20 than the classes of D&D 3.5 or D&D 4.0.
Its nice to know that the hundreds of dollars I have sank into Paizo products has paid off. 4th Ed. ended up being terrible and killed 3.5, yet here comes Paizo to the rescue. From the new stuff for the core classes to simplifying grapple, etc, the new PFRPG is a natural evolution of the game. Paizo will continue to get my money and I hope support for their products grow. Down with WotC, long live Paizo, the true inheritors of DnD.
The Pathfinder core rulebook has created the perfect balance between the broken rules of 3.5 to the bland generic 4.0.
The customization for characters is still there. You can create the character YOU WANT, vs what you are pigeonholed into playing. You can have the druid tank, the rogue crime lord, anything you want to make, you can.
Never has doing a full 20 levels of a core class been so tempting until Pathfinder. The core classes are so well fleshed out you will almost not even want to think of a prestige class.
The layout of the book and the amount of content is jam packed in this hefty tome. It is far more impressive than anything ever produced by the larger brands. Thank you very much Paizo, I will be playing this for the remainder of my D&D Career :)
