GameMastery Item Cards: Hero's Hoard Booster
Paizo Publishing, LLC

5x5
Display: $41.88
Pack: $3.49
5x5 5x5

The first expansion in Paizo's GameMastery™ Item Cards line, Hero's Hoard contains 110 playing-card–sized cards to help GMs track important treasures. Each card features a beautiful full-color illustration of an item (weapon, armor, wondrous item, etc.) on one side, with a text description and room for notes on the opposite side. A GM can hand these out when their PCs get treasure and watch as players learn to love managing their booty. A code on each card helps GMs track which card corresponds to which treasure.

Useable by experienced GMs and novices alike, this product fits perfectly into any GameMaster’s arsenal.

    Hero's Hoard booster packs contain:
  • 1 armor (cards 01–15)
  • 2 weapons (16–39)
  • 2 potions (40–57)
  • 1 scroll (63–72)
  • 1 wand (79–88)
  • 2 wondrous items (89–110)
  • 1 ring (58–62) or 1 rod or staff (73–78)
  • 1 foil card, which may be any card from the set.

Display boxes contain 12 booster packs.

FullStarFullStarFullStarFullStarFullStar Choice of Word
Reviewer: Terry Dyer

When this item was announced I and my group were none to happy about the random concept that was applied to the second and third set. Though as time progressed and I got free packs I began to look at them differently.

Now looking at them from a long term stand point I have grown to enjoy them greatly. The "random" quality of the sets does not always feel really random (two identical boosters card for card) but it gives me multiples of the high consumables that my group uses. This way all the cure light wound potions look the same. Or a group of military NPCs all carry equipment that looks the same. And since there is no; common, uncommon, rare, and ultra rare I have no problem buying them because I don't feel pushed into trying to complete a set that is nigh impossible to do by just buying the packages.

All being weighed and measured the product was a wonderful addition to the item cards but because of being called "random" it burned many customers who have been burned by such products in the past.

FullStarFullStarFullStarFullStarFullStar Nice Idea, Lacks good use
Reviewer: michael leger

I recently ordered a package from Paizo, and received one of these booster packs free. I enjoyed the gift.

After spending some time reviewing what these cards where and talking to my fellow players, we agreed that in fact it would add to much work to be used as treasure, and to much to store all these cards with their character sheet. a itme takes up 1 line of text on a character sheet. As opposed to a card.

We considered the idea of using it to determine random treasure, but then realized that we would need enough cards(duplicates) to match the possibilities in the DMG.

Like i said, i like the idea, i just cannot find it useful.

FullStarFullStarFullStarFullStarFullStar Nice but random
Reviewer: Krypter

The artwork is top-notch, the design excellent and the descriptions quite creative, so the only part of this card set that I don't like is the randomness and duplicates. But it is fun to open a new booster pack to see what you get.

Reviewer: FenrysStar

I've been buying a pack here and a pack there for several months now. I now have need to purchase sleeves to hold and display what I have and keep track of what I do and I don't have out of the set. I detail the cards and what they before I show them to the players so having the option of a factory set, no matter how expensive would be appreciated.

FullStarFullStarFullStarFullStarFullStar I preferred the complete deck...
Reviewer: Dorquemada

This system of random cards in booster packs is less satisfying. I love the original item deck, wish this was like that one.

FullStarFullStarFullStarFullStarFullStar Great but could be better
Reviewer: Riko Reese

The prduct is great, but. I really think it would be a good idea to have several sets that were even more specific. I loved the original box, but I hate random. I have to agree with the people who wrote about having a box of weapons...3-4 of each weapon in the PHB each a different picture..then an armor one done the same way and then one of the wonderous items. I know one that wouldn't sell too well though..scrolls and potions.. I have about a hundred of each already...but only one great sword. It is not worth it to keep buying random pacts in hopes of another great sword and get more potions and scrolls. I really do love the idea though and the cards are good quality.

FullStarFullStarFullStarFullStarFullStar I'm Impressed
Reviewer: Christopher Rooney

A good concept executed well. Obviously I enjoy the cards but there are a few things I'd like to see done differently.

I'm not thrilled with random distribution but I understand why it is done and can live with it. However, I'd like to see less scrolls, potions, and (especially) wands and staves and more armor, weapons, and wondrous items instead. Yes, characters use a lot of scrolls and potions but I really don’t need a lot of different pretty pictures of them. In many cases they are items that I can be comfortable just giving my players printed cards of. I find that the amount of wands and staves in this set far outpaces their use by my players and again I don’t need wands with many distinct looks – I’d much rather have more variations of armor and weapons.

The artwork is good and there is a nice feel of consistency from the fact that one artist is responsible for all of it. However, this does result on a lack of variation, as any artist will tend to use the same style repeatedly. I like the artist’s style but it would nice to get some variation.

FullStarFullStarFullStarFullStarFullStar An excellent product
Reviewer: PsychoticWarrior

I have bought quite a few of these now and I am very pleased. My players really like them so far and it is cool to have a physical representation of every item a charatcer could have. Since I have every character sheet in its own folder these cards were easy to keep. The art is first rate and the cards seem durable even after multiple writings and erasings. I random aspect is a little annoying but with the main 54 non-random card pack available I really don't seem the need for so much negativity against this product.

FullStarFullStarFullStarFullStarFullStar -1 for Random distribution
Reviewer: Frost King

I love the cards, but am not too keen on the random aspect. Despite missing 12 out of the set, I still have more than enough cards to represent most of the armor, weapons, and items the PCs will find/use. I may pick up a couple more boosters in hopes of acquiring a few of the missing cards. Sets 3 and 4 can't come out soon enough.

GameMastery Item Cards: Hero's Hoard Booster

Just want to make sure I have this correct . . . for the $41 dollars I get the entire 110 card set, right?

Sorry. You get 10 packs of 11 random cards - 1 armor, 2 weapons, 2 potions, 1 scroll, 1 wand, 1 ring or rod/staff, 2 wonderous items, and 1 foil that can be any of the above. You WILL NOT get a complete set of cards as there will be repeats of several. And actually, the "random" of Hero's Hoard was pretty uneven so theres a bunch of stuff you won't get and others you'll get triples of. All cool cards that you can find a way to use when role-playing, but not the best way to get a complete set.

If you're starting from scratch, get a boost to get a bunch of cards, then buy/trade to get the ones you're missing. There a guy named Derek who posts on these board who sells and trades a lot (he helped me complete both my HH and RW sets - thanks Derek!). Here's his website:

http://itemcards.blogspot.com

There are also a couple of trade threads here at Paizo. They're a little slow these days but I had good luck there in the past. Finally, there is at least one web-store selling individual cards for around a buck. Here is their website:

http://store.usacomicbooks.com/pazio.html

Last but not least, there are 5 or 6 cards that are almost impossible to find - studded leather, tower shield, spiked chain, warhammer, and one of the staves, IIRC. Good luck on those.

Hope this helps,
Mosaic

Wow, you'd think studded leather would have been one of the most commonly printed cards...

Hey, what are you guys using the foil cards for?
I already have a few and when I give these out my players are going "Ahhh!" and are a little disappointed when I tell them that these are in no way special or different from the other cards.
And I agree with my players that these should be more special than the items on the normal cards.
I thought about representing artifacts with these foil cards, but I have about twenty of these and I'll wrack my campaign when I'm beginning to issue artifacts regulary...:)

So, anybody came up with a nice idea?

Qadira Chris Mortika,

Not all magic items glow to normal sight. Maybe the foil cards are the glowy ones.
