The Combat Pad initiative tracker is the ultimate tool for managing combat in your favorite roleplaying game. It is a wet- and dry-erasable board with a steel core, so the included magnets stick right to it! It is portable—about the size of a sheet of paper—so you can take it anywhere you're gaming.
Use it to quickly and easily track turns. Write the PC's, enemies', and NPC's names on the player magnets using a wet- or dry-erase marker, then place them in initiative order. Use the blue magnets for PCs, black magnets for enemies, and green magnets for NPCs. Hash marks label positions 0–25, making it easy to put the magnets in the correct initiative order. When the order changes, simply slide the magnets to their new places.
The turn indicator magnet points to whose turn it is; never accidentally skip someone again! As the round progresses, slide the turn indicator to point to the next player; it's now that player's turn. At the end of the round, the turn indicator will point to the next round magnet.
The next round magnet serves as a reminder to move the round indicator magnet. The round indicator points to the current round number, so you'll always know exactly which round it is! Write which round spells and effects expire in the notes section of the Combat Pad (e.g. "haste ends round 10"). Additionally, the notes section is a great place to record damage or anything else necessary to make combat run smoothly.
For tactical groups, delaying and readying guides make it simple to synchronize attacks—enemies beware! Slide the player magnet to the proper guide and avoid the confusion common with other initiative tracking methods.
Each Combat Pad includes:
- 1 magnetic wet- and dry-erase board
- 2 combat round indicators
- 8 player character magnets
- 4 non-player character magnets
- 8 enemy magnets
- 2 next round indicators
- 2 active turn indicators

This item has made my combat sessions of the night go much faster. Instead of only fitting in a couple of comabt sequences, now that has doubled.
Combat pad has made my D&D sessions so much easier, that I now have time to fully get into combat as much as the players playing in my Campaign.
The Combat Pad is easily in my top 5 most-useful and fun D&D products. I had so much fun with mine that my son was forced to use his own bucks on one for his D&D games at high school!
The Combat pad has made my game run quicker and smoother. I would highly recommend it for any DM (especially disorganized ones like me.)
This product has helped me immensely since I have gotten it. There is enough room for everything and it can be erased as I go so if a spell is gone, one wipe and it is off my list of things to keep track of. Character dies and a new one takes their place wipe away a name and just keep going.
It has also made me cut down on my use of scratch paper to keep track of things. All one needs is a dry erase marker and you are good to go.
Many thanks to the folks at open Mind Games!
Can't say enough about this tool... our game master is... well... ORGANIZED!
This will help him on big and small battles. AND help us players too! I give this tool 5 stars!
A stellar product! And the company actually responds to e-mails!
All of my d20 game system DM friends are going crazy over this product. If you have been having issues trying to track and maintain d20 Initiatives, this is your savior.
Visually, what you see in their picture is exactly what you get. The size is exactly 8.5 x 11 x 1/16 thick piece of construction board. It is fairly flexible, but in no danger of folding. You can carry this in your notebook or backpack and it will be well protected. I have requested the option of a larger board for more real estate and they say that is high on their priority list. DM's can hide this board easily from the players or pass it around if they wish as it is very portable.
The board and the magnets are dry erase surfaces so they are 100% configurable. Just write in the names of the characters or troops or monsters and go... If you use all the available vertical space on the Initiative side you can squeeze in 13 stacked magnets. The magnets stay in place well and move just as easily when you want them to move.
The internal magnet sheet appears to be about 7.5 x 10 inches (which leaves a ½ inch non-magnetic edge all around the outside). However, for me, this is not an issue.
The entire back side is white and magnetic. So if you need more real estate, there it is. If you want your own custom look, you can stencil in your own design with a permanent ink. Both sides have a glossy finish.
Shipping took less than 10 days from day of order.

This is a great product, it is easy to use and speeds up combat as now my fellow players can see when their turn is coming up and plan accordingly.
The only issue I have is that you can't place the magnets at their proper initiative value, which makes it a bit more difficult to add in other later especially if there has been some readying and delaying going on already. I've remedied this by using the punch-out to create smaller magnets, but it would be nice to have proper ones at the right size.
When the product description says that the Combat Pad is about the size of a sheet of paper, it was being quite specific. It is _exactly_ 8.5 x 11 and about as thick as a piece of cardstock. While this means that the Combat "Pad" (actually a sheet) can fit on a clipboard or be inserted into a page protector and stored in a notebook, it wasn't as thick as I thought it might be; In other words, it wasn't the typical framed dry-erase board you'd find at an office supply store. (Nor were the magnets anything other than a lithographed die-cut sheet of flexible magnetic material.)
Though the Combat Pad's thickness may be a bonus feature for some, for me it means that it might not take the wear and tear I expect it to receive. (As an example, my Combat Pad arrived in the mail with crimped corners despite being shipped with a thick cardboard backing and in a heavy cardboard envelope.)
Still, if I want a frame for my Combat Pad, I suppose I can go to the office supply store and buy one. The lack of a frame doesn't affect the functionality of the Combat Pad or its innovation in running D20 games. As a tool, the Combat Pad is top-notch. 4 stars.
This is the perfect gaming accessory for DMs and Players. The Combat Pad's design shows an attention to detail that's remarkable. The magnets stick but are easy to move, so there's no danger of moving more than what's needed or slipping and smearing the ink.
The color-coded markers for PCs, NPCs, and Monsters makes it a snap to organize combat rounds and flow through combat. You'll never again here "Hey! What about my turn!" To indicate a combatant is readying or delaying just move the marker to the right.
This is easily the best accessory I've seen since I first started playing D&D in the late 1970s. This makes the DM's job a whole lot easier and quicker and engages players round to round as they move the Turn and Round markers. Why didn't someone think of this years ago?
I first saw the Combat Pad in Dragon magazine and I ordered it immediately. The product is beautifully rendered and is an extremely versatile tool for mastering complex combats.
The ability to manage the order of initiative, track the number of rounds and make notes regarding finite abilities and durations is invaluable at the game table. Init-cards and scrap paper can’t compare to the Combat Pad. I time our combats with a stop watch and the Combat Pad has improved our game flow immensely. For the price, it’s a good buy and an indispensable tool.
My one and only negative is that the board itself is not on a harder, more durable or thicker material.
To make up for that - OpenMind’s exceptional customer service resolved a shipping issue (USPS damaged my package) within hours – earning both my cuustomer loyalty and respect.
Buy this product!!! You will not be disappointed!

THey had some production delays, so three weeks or so have been added to the date. We may - MAY - have a couple of cases worth to sell at Origins, but I'm not holding my breath.

Thanks Phil.
I guess my group will have to wait a bit longer for it. I unveiled a few Gamemastery items at my last session and told them I'd have the combat pad soon. Oh well. :)
