In the grim darkness of the far-flung future of the 41st Millennium, horrors lurk on all sides, ready to corrupt the Imperium of Man.
Warhammer 40,000: Dark Heresy will be the first in a trilogy of 40K roleplaying games. Dark Heresy allows players to take on the role of an Inquisitor's retinue. Their task is to uproot the taint of Chaos in Imperial society, to smash dark cults and foil sinister plots. It's a game of investigation and will be an ideal introduction to the dark and gothic universe of the 41st Millennium. This gorgeous full-colour book is crammed with all the information you need to play agents of the Imperial Inquisition. Packed with evocative background, detailed rules and an adventure to get you started, this book is all you need to step into the far-flung future of Warhammer 40,000. Search out the traitor, the heretic, the mutant, and remember: innocence proves nothing.
Just acquired this book recently at the behest of my friend who agreed to run it if I bought it. I must say, being something of a 40K fan, this game is fantastic. The system is relatively easy to learn (though "level advancement" is a tad strange) and it definitely captures the essence of 40K well. I will echo the previous reviewers points about the critical hits table, except that it's only "funny" in as much as watching a zombie movie with far too much blood and gore is funny. You can blow off limbs, decapitate, and otherwise horribly eviscerate your opponents with the arsenal of weapons provided within. Looks like a lot of fun! I can't wait to get our game started next week!
We’ve only recently started playing Dark Heresy and it has been a blast. The bleak dystopian future of the 40k universe is highly enjoyable. The gritty realism, you may start with 10 wounds (hitpoints) and know that is all you will ever have, the extremely funny critical hits charts (funny if it happens to someone else) gives it a distinct flavor.
I found that the game is remarkable easy to learn, if you’ve played d20 you’ll get the hang of it soon enough even though you have to use d100’s.
So I highly recommend Dark Heresy.
If you want to try before you buy, there are a number of free demo adventures out there that will show you the setting and the system. Edge of Darkness is by far the better one.
